192. [ART] STEFAN HIRSCH [1899-1964] "Modern" artist closely aligned with the Precisionists, born in Nurnberg, Germany, to American parents. Growing up in Europe, he frequently visited museums and galleries, where he was introduced to the Old Masters and also became familiar with the innovations of contemporary painters. After studying law and art at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, Hirsch settled in New York in 1919. During the 1920s, he painted images of industrial subjects that show an attention to detail, clean, dry outlines, and harmonious colors. While his highly structured early works reveal his debt to Cezanne, Hirsch favored the urban rather than the natural landscape. Like Demuth and Sheeler, Hirsch was attracted to the man made world, the American machine aesthetic, and his works typically depict the skyline of Lower Manhattan in a Precisionist-influenced, hard-edged geometric style. When Duncan Phillips's included works by Hirsch in his 1926 exhibition, the collector stated: "The steady progress of young Stefan Hirsch may be followed here through influences to invention. The Farmyard is quaintly seen in its tempera colors "a la Fra Angelico." The Mill Town is as infallibly decorative as a Japanese print and yet oh how American! The canvas entitled New York is a symbolical decoration&emdash;a concept of the great city rearing its fabulous towers and its walls without windows above the menace of a black river under the purity of a pellucid sky. The grim battlements of Industry are all beautiful in a strange harmony of subtly orchestrated tones." Throughout the 1920s Hirsch's works won wide acclaim, and he continued to paint while experimenting with printmaking, various subjects, and styles. His works were exhibited frequently and collected by many prestigious American museums. In 1929, he traveled to Mexico, where he was befriended by muralists David Siqueiros and Diego Rivera. Their influence can be seen in Hirsch's Social Realist paintings of the 1930s, works that increasingly became more painterly and luminous. He executed a series of murals in this vein for Federal buildings. During the 1930s and 1940s he focused his energies on teaching, notably at Bennington College in Vermont [1934-1940] and the Art Students League [1940-1946]. In 1942 he joined the faculty at Bard College, where he was chairman of the Art Department for seventeen years before he retired in 1961. Hirsch&emdash;painter, printmaker, and educator&emdash;died in New York in 1964. [credit: from The Phillips Collection, founded by Duncan Phillips]. Offered here is a colored chalk, or pastel, of a wild turkey. It is signed "S.H." in the lower right corner although you can hardly make it out. It is identified on the verso. Proenance: Collection of the noted sculptor, Robert Laurent [1890-1970], Ogunquit, Maine. Stefan Hirsch was a close friend of Laurent. Laurent was born in Concarneau, Brittany France. There, at the age of 12 his artistic talents were recognized by art connoisseur Hamilton Easter Field who then brought him to the United States. Field opened an art school in Ogunquit, Maine. In 1908 he travelled to Rome with Field and there studied with Maurice Sterne as well as with wood carver Giuseppe Doratori at the British Academy. Condition: very good with small tear at top left corner. Contained in old mat [needs to be re-matted] and simply wood frame. Mat opening is 9-1/8 x 12". 374. [ART] RALPH BAKSHI - American animator/draftsman. In the late 1950s & early 1960s he worked at CBS-Terrytoons on such series as "Heckle and Jeckle" and "Mighty Mouse." From there he went to Famous Studios-Paramount, where he directed countless "Casper the Friendly Ghost" and "Little Audrey" cartoons, among others. During the 1960s he also animated Peter Max's commercials. When Famous Studios closed in 1967, Bakshi went into partnership with Steve Krantz. Their first venture was "Fritz the Cat", released in 1972. The success of "Fritz" prompted "Heavy Traffic" [1973], a funny-sad chronicle of life in New York's slums. Striking out on his own, Bakshi produced the sometimes brilliant, often disappointing "Coonskin" [1974]; also "Wizards" [1977]; "Lord of the Rings" [1978]. Ralph Bakshi occupies a somewhat ambiguous position in the animation world. He is one of the more original artists at work in the animated cartoon medium. He has become a cult figure. Although he was connected with the artists of the Ashcan Group, he painted landscapes in the Post-Impressionist style with soft and subtle colors. The Prestons also exhibited in the famous Armory Show, 1913, in New York City. James Preston was a member of the Guild of Free Lance Artists (established in 1920), in New York City. The couple lived in New York City and often traveled to Paris. Preston produced a cover for Saturday Evening Post (April 1905) but became more active in illustration during the 1920s. 551. [ART] Alphonse Legros (1837-1911) born in France but moved to England in 1863 on the advice of his friend, Whistler. He became a citizen in 1881, but never completely grasped the English language. A master etcher of figure subjects, portraits and landscapes, Legros assumed the head professorship of etching and engraving at the Royal College in South Kensington in 1875. He later became the professor of art at the Slade School of Art, London. He was one of the group of artists who proposed the idea of the Société des Aquafortistes to the French publisher Cadart in 1862 and was a founder member of the Society of Painter-Etchers in London in 1880. From this position he fashioned a standard and influenced many younger British artists, most notably William Strang, Charles Furse and Charles Holroyd. In total Legros's graphic oeuvre runs to 704 etchings. Most of Legros's figure subjects were inspired by the artist's early impressions of French peasant life. Influences upon his art in this area have been traced to the paintings and drawings of Gustave Courbet and the art of Goya and the Spanish School. Paper size approx. 11x 15 in., watercolor image size approx. 3.5 x 7 in. with text. Very good condition. RE: Titled "STOVE", the text recounts De Koonings' practice of getting started on a blank canvas. "I've read that De Kooning was afraid to look at a blank canvas. Sometimes to get started he would look around the room and fix on an object - a stove a table, a chair, and write the word "chair", for instance across the canvas so it wouldn't be blank anymore. At this time there were two groups of abstract expressionists. The other was more structured and probably the forerunners of minimalism and late conceptualism. I liked his group better although lately I have removed all the furniture from the studio, I kept the stove, and in the evenings when it is cold I sit in front of it to keep warm."............700-900

MARGARETT SARGENT (1892-1978) American Modernist

MARGARETT SARGENT (1892-1978) she was an unconventional member of an aristocratic Boston family and 4th cousin of John Singer Sargent. She was an artist who rebelled against both the social conventions and artistic tastes of her class and time. Student of George Luks and Gutzon Borglum, Margarett began to exhibit in 1916, eventually participating in as many as than 30 shows. Lincoln Kirstein, founder of the New York City Ballet, gave her a solo exhibition at the Harvard Society for Contemporary Art, in a season that included Maurice Prendergast, Buckminster Fuller, Alexander Calder, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Calder performed his famous miniature circus at Sargent's Boston home. Bernice Abbott photographed her, Marie Laurencin painted her daughter's portrait. George Luks painted Margarett's portrait, THE WHITE BLACKBIRD in 1919. An exhibition of Margarett's work was held at the Davis Art Museum (Wellesley College) and then traveled to New York for exhibition at the Berry-Hill Galleries in 1996. This New York exhibition was the first since 1931, when she was recognized as one of the few important modernists of the 1920s and 30s. A major book on her life and art has been published. Sargent's work synthesized the seemingly contradictory artistic movements of her time, bringing together elements of Fauvism, early Cubism and German and Russian Expressionism. Although Margarett Sargent has been all but forgotten over the decades, largely because her work has been closely held by her family, critics and historians are now eager to acknowledge her achievement and place her firmly in the canon of the American avant-garde.

The catalogue states that Walt Kuhn's prints are of the greatest rarity. Of certain subjects only one to six impressions exist. Others vary in number of impressions, but none exceed fifty of any subject. The catalogue also says - Walt Kuhn's position in the ranks of our foremost American painters has long been assured. What is less familiar to the general public - and indeed to many collectors and institutions - is his work in the graphic media. With the exception of a few examples shown during his lifetime, the greater portion of his prints has remained locked up and forgotten in a warehouse these many years. On the occasion of the first major exhibition of his paintings to be held in New York in several decades, it is our privilege to show the etchings and lithographs that place Walt Kuhn among the most venturesome and exciting graphic artists of the 1920s and 30s. Of the 50 etchings listed in the Kennedy exhibition 41 are in the 6 or less impressions category, with 9 known to have up to 50 impressions. This particular plate, according to the Kennedy brochure, is indicated to have had up to as many as 50 impressions pulled from it. Many of you already know that we own the original Walt Kuhn etching plates. ...................2000-3000

Important Contemporary Artist

2053. Shusaku Arakawa - ORIGINAL signed & inscribed ink drawing in book about his art - PADIGLIONE D'ARTE CONTEMPORANEA, hardbound, 1984, containing 34 b/w illustrations, 10.5 x 10.75 in. Very good condition. We guarantee the authenticity of this drawing.

Shusaku Arakawa - Dadaist Conceptualist Shusaku Arakawa was born in Nagoya, Japan, on July 6, 1936. He studied medicine and mathematics at Tokyo University from 1954 to 1958, and art at the Musashino College of Art, Tokyo, before completing his degree he left Japan. In 1958 he began submitting paintings to the Yomiuri Independent exhibitions and in 1961 held his first solo exhibition at Mudo Gallery, Tokyo. In 1960, he started a neo-Dada group, programming Happenings, and later gaining recognition with a series of boxes. In 1962, he came to New York and created a new series, "Diagram," in which silhouettes of combs, footprints, tennis rackets, arrows and refrigerators were arranged on canvas. Gradually he replaced the silhouettes with words only. Throughout the 1960s he had a number of solo exhibitions at Dwan Gallery, New York and Los Angeles, at Galerie Schmela, Dsseldorf, and Galleria Schwartz, Milan. In 1966 he was given his first museum exhibition at the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands, and in 1970 represented Japan at the Venice Biennale. During the 1970s museums featured his work throughout Europe and the United States and in 1981 a large retrospective was organized by the Stdtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich. With his wife, the poet Madeline H. Gins, Arakawa has also published books that "parallel the preoccupations of his paintings," in particular The Mechanism of Meaning (1979). In 1991 a retrospective was organized by the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Arakawa and Gins increasingly concentrate on collaborative installation pieces and architectural design, such as the Utopian City of Reversible destiny seen at the Guggenheim Soho in 1997. Arakawa denies, like all Conceptualists and Pop Art neo-Dadaists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, the artist's hand in his paintings. Expressionistic or emotive marks on the canvas are few, serving only as a foil to the deadpan, depersonalized, mechanical style. Paintings such as "Out of distance/Out of texture" appear to be aimed at the intellect devoid of feeling for life, poetry or spirituality."...............450-650

Early English Lithograph

2055. [ART] Henry William (H.W.) Burgess was a landscape painter based in London. He came from the Burgess family of British artists, the son of portraitist William (d. 1812) and grandson of Thomas (fl. 1766-1786), and his own son John-Bagnold (1830-1897) also became a painter. Between 1809 and 1844, Burgess exhibited a large number of works at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, Suffolk Street and the New Water-Colour Society in London. He also served as landscape painter to William IV beginning in 1826. Offered here is an original lithograph titled "Thorn Trees, in Bushy Park, Middlesex", image approx. 15.5 x 11" plus margins. This lithograph was published by the firm of Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850), the famous English draftsman, lithographer and printer. He worked mainly in London, although he had trained in Paris as a painter and travelled extensively in Europe making topographical drawings. In 1817, on a visit to Munich, he was introduced to lithography by the pioneering lithographer Alois Senefelder. The following year he produced Twenty-four Views of Italy, a set of images he had drawn and lithographed. Dissatisfied with the way his work had been printed, Hullmandel set up his own lithographic press. The quality of work he published by himself and other artists such as Giovanni Belzoni helped popularize the topographical lithograph among British artists. This is contained in old blue mat & shrink-wrapped. Not examined out of shrink-wrap.............400-600

Richard Wollheim, the philosopher and David Hockney remained life-long friends. Seven weeks after Kitaj's death, the Los Angeles County coroner ruled that the cause of death was suicide. Kitaj had a significant influence on British Pop art, with his figurative paintings. Kitaj was recognised as being one of the world's leading draftsmen, almost on a par with, or compared to, Degas. Indeed, he was taught drawing at Oxford by Percy Horton, himself a pupil of Walter Sickert, who was a pupil of Degas; and the teacher of Degas studied under Ingres. A second retrospective was staged at the Tate Gallery in 1994. Critical reviews in London were almost universally negative. British press savagely attacked the Tate exhibit, calling Kitaj a pretentious poseur who engaged in name dropping. Kitaj took the criticism very personally, declaring that "anti-intellectualism, anti-Americanism, and anti-Semitism" had fueled the vitriol. Despite the bad reviews, the exhibition moved to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and afterwards to the Los Angeles County Museum in 1995. Kitaj was one of several artists to make a post-it note in celebration of 3M's 20th anniversary. When auctioned on the internet in 2000, the charcoal and pastel piece sold for $925, making it the most expensive post-it note in history, a fact recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Kitaj was elected to the Royal Academy in 1991, the first American to join the Academy since John Singer Sargent. He received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1995. He staged another exhibition at the National Gallery in 2001, entitled "Kitaj in the Aura of Cézanne and Other Masters". Offered here is a Rare ALS on back of postcard reproduction of a Picasso drawing, postmarked July 17, 1982..........75-100

80. [ART] André Berne-Joffroy (1915-2007) Former Director of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Iimportant art critic in France. He was responsible for many of the important Paris exhibitions of modern art during the 1950-1980 era. He is also credited with the rediscovery of the Italian artist Michelangelo Caravaggio [1571-1610], who had a formative influence on the Baroque school of painting. Infamous while he lived, Caravaggio was forgotten almost immediately after his death, and it was only in the 20th century that his importance to the development of Western art was rediscovered. Despite this, his influence on the new Baroque style that eventually emerged from the ruins of Mannerism, was profound. It can be seen directly or indirectly in the work of Rubens, Jusepe de Ribera, Bernini, and Rembrandt , and artists in the following generation heavily under his influence were called the "Caravaggisti" or "Caravagesques", as well as Tenebrists or "Tenebrosi" ("shadowists"). Andre Berne-Joffroy, said of him: "What begins in the work of Caravaggio is, quite simply, modern painting." Offered here are approx. 50 manuscript & typed pages written by Berne-Joffroy [UNSIGNED]. He has written on the front "Peinture Byzantine." Written in French. Very rare! Excellent condition...........200-300

521. [ART] Edward Matthew Ward (1816-1879) English Victorian narrative painter best known for his murals in the Palace of Westminster depicting episodes in British history from the English Civil War to the Glorious Revolution. Ward was born in Pimlico, England. As a student at the Royal Academy of Arts Ward became a member of The Clique, a group of painters led by Richard Dadd. Like other members of the Clique Ward saw himself as a follower of Hogarth and Wilkie, considering their styles to be distinctly national in character. Many of his early paintings were set in the eighteenth century and were on Hogarthian subjects. He also painted episodes from seventeenth century history, influenced by the thinking of his friend, the historian Thomas Babington Macaulay. He also painted subjects from the history of the French Revolution. In the 1850s Ward came into conflict with the Pre-Raphaelites, especially Millais, whose style of art he considered to be un-British. Ward's painting of Charlotte Corday being led to execution beat Millais's Ophelia for a prize at Liverpool, leading to much debate at the time. Such historical paintings led to Ward's commission to paint eight scenes in the corridor leading into the House of Commons. These were to depict parallel episodes on the Royalist and Parliamentary sides in the Civil War. Ward's paintings depict the opposed figures as if confronting one another across the corridor. Ward continued to paint Hogarthian versions of episodes from British history throughout the 1860s, notably Hogarth's Studio in 1739 (1863, York City Art Gallery) the Antechamber at Whitehall During the Dying Moments of Charles II (1865, Walker Art Gallery , Liverpool). In the 1870s he painted some modern-life genre subjects, but towards the end of the decade began to suffer painful illness and depression, resulting in his suicide in 1879. His wife Henrietta Ward was also a painter. After her husband's death she became a successful art teacher. His son Leslie Ward became a popular caricaturist for the magazine Vanity Fair under the nickname 'Spy'. Three items offered here. (1] An ALS by Ward, [1878], 2pp, approx. 4.5 x 7 in. To J.R. Hammond, regarding his designs for a tapestry. Edge mounting trace on back. (2] Small ink sketch identified as portrait of E.M. ward by J.R. H. [Hammond, recipient of this letter]. About The Great Art Teacher Hans Hofmann

534. [ART] Karl Kasten (1916-2010) American artist who studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, and who is perhaps considered the most important art teacher of the 20th century in America. Kasten was a painter-printmaker-educator from the San Francisco Bay Area. Kasten was also an editorial cartoonist and Arts Editor for The Daily Californian newspaper. His cartoons regularly featured reflections on the New Deal and the conflicts in Europe. By coincidence the success of Berkeley's Golden Bears also marked an interesting chapter in Kasten's artistic adventure. As part of the Rally Committee, Kasten designed and directed the card stunts for the 1938 Rose Bowl against Alabama's Crimson Tide. The card sequence depicted Berkeley's Campanile covered over by a surging red tide. As the tide receded, a bear appeared in a rowboat and rowed across the tide. Cal won, 13-0. Kasten describes the stunts as, "The greatest work of art I ever did." He went on to complete his B.A and M.A at UC Berkeley. Following his graduation he taught briefly at the California School of Fine Arts but the attack on Pearl Harbor led him to wartime service. On D-Day he was promoted to Captain and put in charge of the Intelligence unit of the Battalion. Kastens' memories of the war are dark and he recalls bluntly, "My job was to kill people," and "I was pretty miserable inside." In the early '50s Kasten experimented with Cubism and non-objective painting but after studying at the Hans Hofmann School in Provincetown, Mass in '51 he turned to Abstract Expressionism. Hoffman's modern art philosophy stressed "pictorial structure, spatial illusion, and color relationships." In her biography of the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism Susan Landauer noted Kasten as the artist who came closest to these tenets. Of that period Kasten said, "It was a great period to work in. Just letting things flow and seeing what happens... I think I got more color into painting during that time than most guys." n addition to his wide record of painting exhibitions, Karl Kasten is known worldwide as a master printer. In 1950, he established the Printmaking program and a course in Materials and Techniques at UC Berkeley. Kasten exhibited in the São Paulo Bicentennial and World Print III Traveling Show, as well as the M. H. de Young Museum and California Palace of the Legion of Honor, the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. His works are in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Oakland Art Museum; San Jose Museum of Art; New York Public Library; Museum of Modern Art, New York City; M. H. de Young Memorial Museum; Achenback Collection; Musee des Beaux Arts, Rennes; Auckland City Museum, New Zealand; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Offered here is a 2-page TLS, 1972, about Hans Hofmann. VG...........150-250

23. [FRANCE] Nicolas de Lamoignon - Nicolas Lamoignon-Bâville (1648-1724) was a French official said to have been accused by Voltaire of instigating the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He made himself famous by the measures he adopted against the Protestants, and by the manner in which he associated himself with the religious policy of Louvois, of which the revocation of the Edict of Nantes was the culminating point. But it is without proof that Voltaire accused him of having instigated this revocation. "I never counselled the revocation of the Edict of Nantes", he wrote to his brother in 1708. On the contrary he considered that "in religion hearts must be attacked, for it is there that it resides", and immediately after the revocation he sent for Bourdaloue to come and evangelize the Protestants of Montpellier. From 1702 to 1704 he helped in the repression of the uprising of the Camisards, occasioned in the Cevennes by English and Calvinistic influences. Document Signed, 1710, 3pp+, 7-1/4 x 9-3/4". 31. [FRANCE] Marthe Bibesco (1886-1973) Romanian-French writer. In January 2001, a national poll of the most influential women in Romania's history placed princess Marthe Bibesco in the first position as the woman of the Millennium and of the 20th century. When Romania at last entered the war on the Allied side in 1916, Marthe worked at a hospital in Bucharest until the German army burned down her home in Posada, in the Transylvanian Alps. She fled the country to join her mother and daughter in Geneva after a quarantine exile, imposed by the German occupants, in Austria-Hungary (as a guest of the princely family of Thurn and Taxis at Latchen ). There she continued to write. For most of her life, she wrote every morning until lunchtime--her journals alone fill 65 volumes. In Switzerland, she began work on Isvor, pays des saules ("Isvor, Land of Willows"). It was Marthe's Romanian masterpiece, where she brilliantly conveyed the everyday life and customs of her people, the extraordinary mixture of superstition, deep philosophy, resignation and hope, and the unending struggle between age-old pagan beliefs and Christian faith. For the Bibescos life after the war was more cosmopolitan than Romanian. Among her literary friends and acquaintances, Marthe counted Jean Cocteau, Paul Valéry, Rainer Maria Rilke, François Mauriac, Max Jacob, and Francis Jammes. During this postwar period she rebuilt Posada, her mountain home, and began restoring the other family estate, Mogos, oaia, the palace built in Byzantine style. Again in London, she met Winston Churchill in 1920, starting a warm friendship that would last until his death in 1965. Now a grande dame, she enjoyed her last great friendship with a powerful leader, Charles de Gaulle, who invited her in 1963 to an Élysée Palace reception in the honour of the Swedish Sovereigns. De Gaulle also took a copy of Isvor, Pays des Saules with him when he visited Romania in 1968, and told her in the same year: ... you do personify Europe to me. Marthe was 82 years old. She died on 28 November 1973 in Paris. Offered here is a 7-page ALS, Hotel Du Parc [France], 1958. Not translated. Approx. 5-1/4 x 8-1/4". VG........100-150
