20. [ART] George Desvallieres (1861-1950) French painter. A native of Paris, Desvallières was a great-grandson of academician Gabriel Legouvé, and received a religious upbringing. He studied at the Académie Julian with Tony Robert-Fleury and with Jules Valadon at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He painted portraits at first, but a relationship with Gustave Moreau turned him towards an interest in mythology and religion. Desvallières became acquainted with ancient art during a trip to Italy in 1890, and upon his return began working in the style with which he was most associated, combining dark subjects and violent color with a dramatic conception of religion. He took as his subjects numerous symbolist characters, such as Narcissus (in 1901), Orpheus (1902), and The Marche Towards the Ideal (1903); he also served as one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne. In 1919 he founded the Ateliers d'Art Sacré with Maurice Denis, in an attempt to renew interest in religious art. The atelier served a similar function to that performed by artists' studios in the Middle Ages. Desvallières became interested in religious art after losing a son to World War I in 1915; he himself had commanded a battalion in the Vosges during the war. Desvallières also tackled a number of public and private decorative programs related to the war; among these were windows for the Douaumont ossuary and for a church in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He also illustrated a number of books and plays, including Edmond Rostand's La Princesse lointaine and "Rolla" by Alfred de Musset. Until 1950 he also received State commissions. Works by Desvallières may be found in the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée du Louvre. He died in Paris in 1950. In July 1929, Desvallières succeeded Georges Rouault who had just resigned from the position of Curator of the Musée Gustave-Moreau. In January 1930, he was elected member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts of Belgium, and, in the following month of May, member of the Institut de France in replacement of his friend René Ménard. The Fra Angelico Association d'Entraide aux Artistes appointed him president of their Management Committee in 1933. In March 1934, he signed Jacques Maritains' manifesto Pour Le Bien Commun, in favour of Christian socialism. The following year, he took part in the creation of L'Art Sacré review and was on its editorial committee. After Frantz Jourdain's death in the summer of 1935, he was elected president of the Salon d'Automne in 1936. In December 1938, he took position in favour of the new stained glass windows for the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. He became President of the Institut de France in January 1940, President of the Société de Saint Jean in 1943, and Honorary President of the Salon d'Automne in 1947. 22. [ART] Lowell Blair Nesbitt (1933-1993) American painter, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. In 1958 the Baltimore Museum of Art hosted the first solo museum exhibit that Nesbitt was to have in his lengthy career but it was in 1964 with Nesbitt's debut at the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Museum) in Washington D.C. that the art world truly took notice of his bold new style with this first public exhibition of the botanical series of paintings, drawings and prints which was to be the series of works that was to put Lowell Nesbitt on the map of current art world fascinations. The vast array of botanical works most likely would not have been created had it had not been for the beckoning of fellow artist, Robert Indiana who, in 1962 after viewing some of Lowell Nesbitt's abstract paintings drawings and prints suggested that he attempt to make a conversion from the abstraction which Nesbitt's career had been focused on pre-1962, to the style of realism. Nesbitt was often classified as a Photorealist artist, though, he fought inclusion with this group of artists throughout his career. Nesbitt quickly established himself as an artist who could employ both diversity of technique and subject matter while creating paintings, drawings and prints using studio interiors, articles of clothing, piles of shoes, x-ray figures (Nesbitt was the first highly recognized artist to use this subject matter) , caverns, ruins, landscapes, flowers, groupings of fruits and vegetables, and electronic components (he is credited for being the first artist to use computer parts as subject matter for his artwork). To honor Lowell Nesbitt's monumental contributions to the art world, in 1980, the United States Postal Service issued four stamps based on his floral paintings. He also served as the official artist for the NASA space flights of Apollo 9 and Apollo 13. Lowell Nesbitt was found dead in his New York studio in 1993 at the age of 59. 24. [ART] Stow Wengenroth (1906-1978) American artist and lithographer, born in 1906 in Brooklyn, New York. Wengenroth was once called "America's greatest living artist working in black and white" by the American realist painter Andrew Wyeth, and he is generally considered to be one of the finest American lithographers of the twentieth century. He studied at the Art Students League of New York under George Brant Bridgeman and John Carlson from 1923 to 1927, then at the Grand Central School of Art under Wayman Adams. Wengenroth was elected a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters (renamed the American Academy of Arts and Letters) in 1942 and was also a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and the Prairie Printmakers. He was elected an Associate of the prestigious National Academy of Design in 1938, and a full Academician in 1941. Wengenroth was also the author of several influential books on lithography. Wengenroth's lithographs are found in most major American collections, including the Library of Congress, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. During his career, Wengenroth became well-known for his detailed depictions of the seascapes and landscapes of New England and, particularly, Maine . As an artist, he eschewed colour in his lithographs but rather focused on shadow, light, and form to transmit detail and dimension. While his urban scenes of Manhattan and the New York City environs are especially coveted by the current market, Wengenroth was most adept at creating sincere yet vivid simulacra of the New England littoral and interior. Offered here is an unsigned 2-sided watercolor. Sand dunes on one side and a most unusual abstraction watercolor on the other. This is the last of our Wengenroths that we bought at the Bruce Collins auction in Kennebunk, Maine. These were consigned to Collins from the estate of Wengenroth. Youngs Fine Arts sold our companion piece to this in their 7/12/97 sale, lot 52. It was 1-sided, signed, almost identical scene, a little smaller, and brought $660. We saved this one because it was nicer but mainly because of the unusual abstraction on the one side. This is guaranteed, without a time limit, to be by Stow Wengenroth and we will send along a letter of guarantee to the winning bidder. This piece is approx. 14-3/4 x 19-3/4 in. Pin holes in the corners caused by Wengenroth. His watercolors & drawings are quite uncommon. CLICK BELOW TO SEE BOTH SIDES............700-1000
