125. [ART] James Fahey [1804-1885] English landscape painter. He was born at Paddington, then a village near London, and at first studied engraving under his uncle, John Swaine. Afterwards he became a pupil of George Scharf, and then went to Paris , where he studied from life, making full-size drawings of dissections, which he reproduced on stone for the use of anatomical students. His earliest exhibited work, a "Portrait of a young Gentleman", appeared at the Royal Academy in 1825, and was followed in 1827 by drawings of the church of St. Jacques at Dieppe and the cathedral of Notre-Dame at Paris. Between this time and 1836 he contributed several portraits and landscapes in water-colours to the exhibitions of the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists. Meanwhile the beauties of English scenery led him by degrees to devote himself exclusively to landscape painting, and in 1834 he joined the Associated Painters in Water-Colours, out of which was formed in 1835 the New Society of Painters in Water-Colours (now the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-Colours). Its first three exhibitions were held in Exeter Hall, London, until in 1838 it moved to Pall Mall , when Fahey became its secretary. This office he held until 1874, and discharged its duties with much tact and devotion. His works, mostly landscape compositions, in which he introduced figures and groups, were seldom absent from its exhibitions, and his official services were long given without any remuneration. In 1853, 1855, and 1857 he again sent landscape drawings to the Royal Academy, and in 1856 he was appointed drawing-master at the Merchant Taylors' School , from which post he retired with a pension after twenty-seven years' service. He also painted occasionally in oil, and exhibited two pictures at the British Institution in 1861 and 1862. Offered here are 3 ALSs, 1868 & 1869, total of 6 pages. All to James Lockyer. VG............75-100

ORIGINAL ETCHING PLATE

133. [ART] WALT KUHN [1877-1949]. American painter. An ORIGINAL etching plate of a female nude, identified as GIRL WITH ROSE. If the title is actually WAITING FOR THE CUE, which is the same size, then this etching was included in the 1967 Kennedy Galleries exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints [#50] and was indicated that there were only from 1 to 6 prints ever pulled from this plate. It may not be WAITING FOR THE CUE but its the only plate in the exbition of this size. Typical Kuhn style. Plate size 4-3/4 x 2-3/4 in. This plate still has some life in it and etchings could be pulled from it. Very seldom does an original etching plate by an important artist ever reach the open market as they usually are in institutional collections. Provenance: Kuhn Estate. It is difficult to get a good scan of this and the picture below isn't very good. He did not etch his initials or signature into the plate into the plate, which was his normal practice. I don't think he ever etched his signature into any of his plates although he sometimes would etch initials, this was seldom. This is guaranteed to be an authentic Walt Kuhn plate without a time limit to the original purchaser. We will send a letter of guarantee and provenance to the buyer..........2000-3000

Marvelous Watercolor

191. [ART] George L. Rounds [1867-1921] American artist. Contrary to what AskArt says, Rounds was born in Vermont, not Sweden, and died in Chicago in 1921, not 1966. We were able to ascertain this from The Illinois Historical Art Project page. The mis-information on AskArt apparently also came from the same page although someone used the information for the artist appearing above Rounds. Took a while but we finally figured it out. Round's early death seems to explain the scarcity of his paintings as there are only about 3 or 4 auction records. Two oil paintings were offered years ago at 5000/8000 each but neither sold. Offered here is a rather nice signed watercolor contained in a great vintage Arts & Crafts picture frame. The frame could use some polish and has a few dings but it is in the original condition which is pretty good. Obviously this painting dates to 1921 or earlier. Not examined out of the frame but there are no apparent condition problems. The scans below show a reflection from the glass. Approx. 9-3/4 x 13-3/4".............600-800

192. [ART] STEFAN HIRSCH [1899-1964] "Modern" artist closely aligned with the Precisionists, born in Nurnberg, Germany, to American parents. Growing up in Europe, he frequently visited museums and galleries, where he was introduced to the Old Masters and also became familiar with the innovations of contemporary painters. After studying law and art at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, Hirsch settled in New York in 1919. During the 1920s, he painted images of industrial subjects that show an attention to detail, clean, dry outlines, and harmonious colors. While his highly structured early works reveal his debt to Cezanne, Hirsch favored the urban rather than the natural landscape. Like Demuth and Sheeler, Hirsch was attracted to the man made world, the American machine aesthetic, and his works typically depict the skyline of Lower Manhattan in a Precisionist-influenced, hard-edged geometric style. When Duncan Phillips's included works by Hirsch in his 1926 exhibition, the collector stated: "The steady progress of young Stefan Hirsch may be followed here through influences to invention. The Farmyard is quaintly seen in its tempera colors "a la Fra Angelico." The Mill Town is as infallibly decorative as a Japanese print and yet oh how American! The canvas entitled New York is a symbolical decoration&emdash;a concept of the great city rearing its fabulous towers and its walls without windows above the menace of a black river under the purity of a pellucid sky. The grim battlements of Industry are all beautiful in a strange harmony of subtly orchestrated tones." Throughout the 1920s Hirsch's works won wide acclaim, and he continued to paint while experimenting with printmaking, various subjects, and styles. His works were exhibited frequently and collected by many prestigious American museums. In 1929, he traveled to Mexico, where he was befriended by muralists David Siqueiros and Diego Rivera. Their influence can be seen in Hirsch's Social Realist paintings of the 1930s, works that increasingly became more painterly and luminous. He executed a series of murals in this vein for Federal buildings. During the 1930s and 1940s he focused his energies on teaching, notably at Bennington College in Vermont [1934-1940] and the Art Students League [1940-1946]. In 1942 he joined the faculty at Bard College, where he was chairman of the Art Department for seventeen years before he retired in 1961. Hirsch&emdash;painter, printmaker, and educator&emdash;died in New York in 1964. [credit: from The Phillips Collection, founded by Duncan Phillips]. Offered here is a colored chalk, or pastel, of a wild turkey. It is signed "S.H." in the lower right corner although you can hardly make it out. It is identified on the verso. Proenance: Collection of the noted sculptor, Robert Laurent [1890-1970], Ogunquit, Maine. Stefan Hirsch was a close friend of Laurent. Laurent was born in Concarneau, Brittany France. There, at the age of 12 his artistic talents were recognized by art connoisseur Hamilton Easter Field who then brought him to the United States. Field opened an art school in Ogunquit, Maine. In 1908 he travelled to Rome with Field and there studied with Maurice Sterne as well as with wood carver Giuseppe Doratori at the British Academy. Condition: very good with small tear at top left corner. Contained in old mat [needs to be re-matted] and simply wood frame. Mat opening is 9-1/8 x 12". An oil painting of factory buildings in Portsmouth, NH, sold at auction [Christies] in 2005, 17 x 27". for $100,000 on an estimate of 25-35,000. In 1931 he executed reliefs for the RCA Building, and in 1934 for the International Building, both at Rockefeller Center, New York City. 911. [ART] Alfred Elmore [1815-1881] Victorian history and genre painter. He was born in Cork, Ireland, the son of Dr. John Richard Elmore, a surgeon who retired from the British Army to Clonakilty. His family moved to London, where Elmore studied at the Royal Academy of Arts. His early works were in the troubadour style of Richard Parkes Bonington, but he soon graduated to religious work, notably The Martyrdom of Thomas à Becket, commissioned by Daniel O'Connell for Westland Row Church in Dublin. Between 1840 and 1844 Elmore travelled across Europe, visiting Munich, Venice, Bologna, and Florence. Elmore seems to have been associated with The Clique, a group of young artists who saw themselves as followers of Hogarth and David Wilkie. According to his friend William Powell Frith he was member of the group, but since it was most active while he was in continental Europe, his involvement was probably short-lived. Most of Elmore's later works were historical narrative paintings. Religious Controversy and The Novice were implicitly anti-Catholic in character. Other paintings set episodes from Shakespeare, or the history of the French Revolution. They often contained subtle explorations of the process of creation, most importantly his two paintings about technological innovation, The Invention of the Stocking Loom (1847, Nottingham Castle Museum) and The Invention of the Combing Machine (1862, Cartwright Hall, Bradford). Both portray the process of industrialisation by depicting picturesque pre-industrial handicrafts. The inventor is supposed to be pondering these manual skills while he forms in his mind a mechanism to replace them. Elmore's best-known work is On the Brink (1865; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge), a moral genre painting depicting a young woman who has lost her money gambling, and is 'on the brink' of responding to the blandishments of a seducer, who is depicted as a satan-like figure, luridly bathed in red light, and whispering corrupting thoughts in her ear. By the late 1860s Elmore was moving away from such Hogarthian subjects towards a more classical style influenced by Edward Poynter and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. He also painted Arabic figures, in line with the vogue for Orientalism in art. Elmore suffered from neuralgia through much of his life, and in his late years he became lame following a fall from his horse. He died of cancer in January 1881 and was buried in Kensal Green cemetery in London. HIS SIGNATURE AND 5 LINES REMOVED FROM LETTER.

954. [ART] Samuel John "Lamorna" Birch, RA, RWS (1869 - 1955) was an artist in oils and watercolours. At the suggestion of fellow artist Stanhope Forbes, Birch adopted the soubriquet "Lamorna" to distinguish himself from Lionel Birch, an artist who was also working in the area at that time. Lamorna Birch was born in Egremont in Cheshire, England. He was self-taught as an artist, other than for a brief period of study at the Académie Colarossi in Paris during 1895. He is thought of as a painter of northern England, but his most important period was when he settled in Lamorna, Cornwall in 1902, and many of his most famous pictures date from this time and the beautiful Lamorna Cove is usually their subject matter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1892. He held his first one man exhibition at the Fine Art Society in 1906. He is said to have produced more than 20,000 pictures. The exhibition Shades of British Impressionism Lamorna Birch and his Circle was shown at Warrington Museum & Art Gallery in the Mezzanine in October 2004. This details his links with Henry Scott Tuke and Thomas Cooper Gotch and many others who settled in the artists' colony in the 1880s and 1890s. "These painters helped to change the face of British art. Their emphasis on colour and light, truth and social realism brought about a revolution in British art." says the catalogue for the show. MARGARETT SARGENT (1892-1978) American Modernist

MARGARETT SARGENT (1892-1978) she was an unconventional member of an aristocratic Boston family and 4th cousin of John Singer Sargent. She was an artist who rebelled against both the social conventions and artistic tastes of her class and time. Student of George Luks and Gutzon Borglum, Margarett began to exhibit in 1916, eventually participating in as many as than 30 shows. Lincoln Kirstein, founder of the New York City Ballet, gave her a solo exhibition at the Harvard Society for Contemporary Art, in a season that included Maurice Prendergast, Buckminster Fuller, Alexander Calder, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Calder performed his famous miniature circus at Sargent's Boston home. Bernice Abbott photographed her, Marie Laurencin painted her daughter's portrait. George Luks painted Margarett's portrait, THE WHITE BLACKBIRD in 1919. An exhibition of Margarett's work was held at the Davis Art Museum (Wellesley College) and then traveled to New York for exhibition at the Berry-Hill Galleries in 1996. This New York exhibition was the first since 1931, when she was recognized as one of the few important modernists of the 1920s and 30s. A major book on her life and art has been published. Sargent's work synthesized the seemingly contradictory artistic movements of her time, bringing together elements of Fauvism, early Cubism and German and Russian Expressionism. Although Margarett Sargent has been all but forgotten over the decades, largely because her work has been closely held by her family, critics and historians are now eager to acknowledge her achievement and place her firmly in the canon of the American avant-garde.

Important Contemporary Artist

2053. Shusaku Arakawa - ORIGINAL signed & inscribed ink drawing in book about his art - PADIGLIONE D'ARTE CONTEMPORANEA, hardbound, 1984, containing 34 b/w illustrations, 10.5 x 10.75 in. Very good condition. We guarantee the authenticity of this drawing.

Shusaku Arakawa - Dadaist Conceptualist Shusaku Arakawa was born in Nagoya, Japan, on July 6, 1936. He studied medicine and mathematics at Tokyo University from 1954 to 1958, and art at the Musashino College of Art, Tokyo, before completing his degree he left Japan. In 1958 he began submitting paintings to the Yomiuri Independent exhibitions and in 1961 held his first solo exhibition at Mudo Gallery, Tokyo. In 1960, he started a neo-Dada group, programming Happenings, and later gaining recognition with a series of boxes. In 1962, he came to New York and created a new series, "Diagram," in which silhouettes of combs, footprints, tennis rackets, arrows and refrigerators were arranged on canvas. Gradually he replaced the silhouettes with words only. Throughout the 1960s he had a number of solo exhibitions at Dwan Gallery, New York and Los Angeles, at Galerie Schmela, Dsseldorf, and Galleria Schwartz, Milan. In 1966 he was given his first museum exhibition at the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands, and in 1970 represented Japan at the Venice Biennale. During the 1970s museums featured his work throughout Europe and the United States and in 1981 a large retrospective was organized by the Stdtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich. With his wife, the poet Madeline H. Gins, Arakawa has also published books that "parallel the preoccupations of his paintings," in particular The Mechanism of Meaning (1979). In 1991 a retrospective was organized by the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Arakawa and Gins increasingly concentrate on collaborative installation pieces and architectural design, such as the Utopian City of Reversible destiny seen at the Guggenheim Soho in 1997. Arakawa denies, like all Conceptualists and Pop Art neo-Dadaists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, the artist's hand in his paintings. Expressionistic or emotive marks on the canvas are few, serving only as a foil to the deadpan, depersonalized, mechanical style. Paintings such as "Out of distance/Out of texture" appear to be aimed at the intellect devoid of feeling for life, poetry or spirituality."...............450-650

He is renowned for his candid photographs, best known for his photograph capturing the celebration of V-J Day. Offered here is a 10 x 8 photograph taken by Eisenstaedt of Henry Kissinger, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Kissinger has signed and inscribed the photograph to Richard J. Hall. Blind stamp on verso "LIFE PHOTO BY ALFRED EISENSTAEDT." A pencil notation indicates that the photo was taken & signed around 7/03/69. There is a soft paperclip indent showing when held at an angle. The verso appears clean even though the scan below shows discoloration from photo emulsion. For some reason scanners often show what the eye cannot see.............2000-2500
