2. [ART] Auguste-Louis Lepère [1849-1918] French painter and etcher. Auguste Lepere is also considered the leader in the creative revival of wood engraving in Europe. At age thirteen he began his artistic education in the Paris studio of the engraver, Smeeton. By the mid 1870's, Lepère had clearly emerged as one of the most renowned printmakers of his time. Lepère focused mostly on daily life in both his etchings and wood engravings. He is now renowned for his innovations, such as the use of colored paper, or the combining of etching and wood engraving on the same print. The last years of his life were given almost exclusively to wood engraving. In total his graphic oeuvre consists of over 150 etchings, over two hundred wood engravings and 14 lithographs. Offered here is a fine example of his work. Original etching, "L'Etang St. Nicolas" (Angers) image size approx. 6 x 9 inches, c. 1900, ed. of 35, cat. Saunier 398, signed and numbered 19/35 in pencil, signed and inscribed "Angers" in the plate [upper right..........400-500

62. [ART] Melodese [Melodese Kippatrick Whitaker] signed pencil drawing , 1963, 8 x 10.5". A snipit of info. with this drawing casued us to google this artist and we found: " ONE EVENING Anna Kilpatrick telephoned and invited me to their home to meet Dr. Kilpatrick's sister who was visiting from Europe. Her name was Melodese, and she had lived many places in the world with her husband who was, I believe, in the military service.Although they were divorced, and she had a son and a daughter living in the USA, she had chosen to remain in Madrid, Spain, where she was an artist (painter) of some note. She maintained both her home and her studio there. Melodese Kilpatrick Whitaker turned out to be a very charming woman (of course, she was Dr. Kilpatrick's sister). We had a fabulous conversation, and got to know one another. Since she was leaving the next day, they wanted her to come over to my apartment to see some of my historical things, and antiques and artwork. So we got into separate cars and they followed me to my apartment, which was less than two miles away. The Kilpatricks had visited me there many times, of course, when Dr. Kilpatrick picked up an antique mandolin (given to me by Mattie Fair of Muskogee) which had a string missing. The missing string mattered not to him -- he was so accomplished that he just bypassed that and made its music on a good string! We went over my scrapbook of newspaper clippings, and photographs, and I showed Melodese some of the historical papers which I owned, but before they took Melodese back to their home, Dr. Kilpatrick asked for me to show her something that I had written down -- one of those thoughts which I considered worth saving. I did so, and she was so impressed and touched that she asked me to write it for her in my own handwriting, and to sign it for her. I did so. It said simply, "What a world is that, that even the young gods must suffer as other men!" From the private collection of HENRI CORBIERE (1888-1980) French art critic and journalist. For over 50 years he collected from intellectuals in many fields all over the world their opinions on life. Eventually compiling approximately 13,000 such responses. ......50-75

67. [ART] Jacques Villon (1875 - 1963) A painter and printmaker, Villon was known for his Cubist-style works, and is especially noted by art historians for "his creation of a purely graphic language for Cubism. He first came to the attention of the American public when his work was included in the 1913 New York Armory Show, which introduced modernism to the United Sates. All of his work sold at this exhibition. He was from a cultured family in the Normandy region of France, and was much influenced by his maternal grandfather, Emile Nicolle, who gave him early artistic training. Villon was born with the name of Gaston Emile Duchamp, and was the older brother of artists Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Honoring the French medieval poet, François Villon, and so as not to be confused artistically with his siblings, he changed his name to Jacques Villon. Jacques Villon died in his studio on June 9, 1963, and three years later, Marcel Duchamp, his last surviving brother, organized an exhibition of his work, which was held at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris. In 1922 Villon was commissioned by the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune to produce a series of color aquatints after 38 major 19th and 20th century paintings. These included works after Braque, Matisse, Renoir, Manet, Picasso, Cezanne, Dufy, Modigliani, Bonnard and numerous others. Villon collaborated with these master artists and signed these prints so that they provided the public with access to works which otherwise would not be available. Color aquatint, signed in the plate (not pencil signed), 1923, title "NATURE MORTE", after Georges Braque, mat opening size 25-1/2 x 9 in. Framed. Not examined out of frame but appears to be without faults...............2000-3000

He emigrated to the USA in 1881, moving first to Chicago and then to New York. Sterner was a noted painter, printmaker, and illustrator. He was president of the Society of Illustrators (1907-1908) and later taught at the Arts Students League in New York (1918). He received many accolades and awards during his career. Lithography was pioneered in America by Albert Sterner (The Model, c. 1920), who with George Bellows (Parlor Critic, 1921) started the organization Painters-Gravers of America in New York in 1915. This was the first artist group committed to the development of lithography as a fine art medium in America and included artists John Sloan and Edward Hopper. 337. [ART] Alphonse Legros (1837-1911) born in France but moved to England in 1863 on the advice of his friend, Whistler. He became a citizen in 1881, but never completely grasped the English language. A master etcher of figure subjects, portraits and landscapes, Legros assumed the head professorship of etching and engraving at the Royal College in South Kensington in 1875. He later became the professor of art at the Slade School of Art, London. He was one of the group of artists who proposed the idea of the Société des Aquafortistes to the French publisher Cadart in 1862 and was a founder member of the Society of Painter-Etchers in London in 1880. From this position he fashioned a standard and influenced many younger British artists, most notably William Strang, Charles Furse and Charles Holroyd. In total Legros's graphic oeuvre runs to 704 etchings. Most of Legros's figure subjects were inspired by the artist's early impressions of French peasant life. Influences upon his art in this area have been traced to the paintings and drawings of Gustave Courbet and the art of Goya and the Spanish School. 338. [ART] Thomas Handforth (1897-1948) American artist and etcher. He wrote and illustrated the book Mei Li about his personal experiences in China and won the 1939 Caldecott Medal. Born in Tacoma, Washington, he studied at the University of Washington. Today, Mei Li is a reissue of a book originally published in 1938. Thomas Handforth's magnificent drawings of China in the 1930s are still animated and compelling; the story of Mei Li's Chinese New Year is wordy forced, and sexist by contemporary standards. A Caldecott Medal winner. He was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1897-1948. He studied art at the University of Washington, and at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in France. He lived in various locations such as Paris, India, North Africa, Mexico and China. Best known work is Mei Li (1938) which won the Caldecott in '39. 408. [ART] Stow Wengenroth (1906-1978) American artist and lithographer, born in 1906 in Brooklyn, New York. Wengenroth was once called "America's greatest living artist working in black and white" by the American realist painter Andrew Wyeth, and he is generally considered to be one of the finest American lithographers of the twentieth century. He studied at the Art Students League of New York under George Brant Bridgeman and John Carlson from 1923 to 1927, then at the Grand Central School of Art under Wayman Adams. Wengenroth was elected a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters (renamed the American Academy of Arts and Letters) in 1942 and was also a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and the Prairie Printmakers. He was elected an Associate of the prestigious National Academy of Design in 1938, and a full Academician in 1941. Wengenroth was also the author of several influential books on lithography. Wengenroth's lithographs are found in most major American collections, including the Library of Congress, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. During his career, Wengenroth became well-known for his detailed depictions of the seascapes and landscapes of New England and, particularly, Maine . As an artist, he eschewed colour in his lithographs but rather focused on shadow, light, and form to transmit detail and dimension. While his urban scenes of Manhattan and the New York City environs are especially coveted by the current market, Wengenroth was most adept at creating sincere yet vivid simulacra of the New England littoral and interior. Offered here is an unsigned 2-sided watercolor. Sand dunes on one side and a most unusual abstraction watercolor on the other. This is the last of our Wengenroths that we bought at the Bruce Collins auction in Kennebunk, Maine. These were consigned to Collins from the estate of Wengenroth. Youngs Fine Arts sold our companion piece to this in their 7/12/97 sale, lot 52. It was 1-sided, signed, almost identical scene, a little smaller, and brought $660. We saved this one because it was nicer but mainly because of the unusual abstraction on the one side. This is guaranteed, without a time limit, to be by Stow Wengenroth and we will send along a letter of guarantee to the winning bidder. This piece is approx. 14-3/4 x 19-3/4 in. Pin holes in the corners caused by Wengenroth. His watercolors & drawings are quite uncommon. CLICK BELOW TO SEE BOTH SIDES............700-1000

143. [ART] Nicolas Toussaint Charlet (1792- 1845) French designer and painter, more especially of military subjects, was born in Paris. He was the son of a dragoon in the Republican army, whose death in the ranks left the widow and orphan in very poor circumstances. He served in the National Guard in 1814, fought bravely at the Barrière de Clichy. He entered the atelier of the distinguished painter Baron Gros, and soon began issuing the first of the lithographed designs which eventually brought him renown. His "Grenadier de Waterloo", 1817, with the motto "La Garde meurt et ne se rend pas" (a famous phrase frequently attributed to Cambronne, but which he never uttered, and which cannot, perhaps, be traced farther than to this lithograph by Charlet), was particularly popular. 176. [ART] André Berne-Joffroy (1915-2007) Former Director of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Iimportant art critic in France. He was responsible for many of the important Paris exhibitions of modern art during the 1950-1980 era. He is also credited with the rediscovery of the Italian artist Michelangelo Caravaggio [1571-1610], who had a formative influence on the Baroque school of painting. Infamous while he lived, Caravaggio was forgotten almost immediately after his death, and it was only in the 20th century that his importance to the development of Western art was rediscovered. Despite this, his influence on the new Baroque style that eventually emerged from the ruins of Mannerism, was profound. It can be seen directly or indirectly in the work of Rubens, Jusepe de Ribera, Bernini, and Rembrandt , and artists in the following generation heavily under his influence were called the "Caravaggisti" or "Caravagesques", as well as Tenebrists or "Tenebrosi" ("shadowists"). Andre Berne-Joffroy, said of him: "What begins in the work of Caravaggio is, quite simply, modern painting." Offered here are approx. 50 manuscript & typed pages written by Berne-Joffroy [UNSIGNED]. 322. [ART] Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) was one of the most renowned painters of late nineteenth-century Britain. The current issue of ART NEWS [Jan. 2011] has an interesting article about this artist titled "FROM RICHES TO RAGS TO RICHES." In 1955 a London dealer sold a painting by Alma-Tadema to a couple for about $900. They paid and left with the painting [53x84"]. About an hour later a man came into the gallery to say there was a painting in the alley next door. When they went outside they discovered that the couple discarded the painting, only wanting the frame. Here's a brief history of that painting "The Finding of Moses." in 1904 it sold for $25,000. 1935 it brought $2100 at auction. 1942 it was only worth about $682, and in 1960 it failed to meet its reserve at Christies. Later in the 1960s a dealer bought it for $8500 and sold it the Allen Funt [Candid Camera guy] for $25,000. So after 60 years it was back to 25k. Funt was collecting this artist and he auctioned off his collection in 1973, during which the painting reached a new high of $72,800. In 1995 Christies sold the painting for $2.7 million. Then last November at Sothebys the painting appeared again, this time selling for $35.9 million. What about that frame. It was made by the framemaker Thomas Maws is is estimated to be worth $250,000 - 300,000. Offered here is Four closing lines and his signature removed from letter. Mounted to album page. IS IT WORTH?.......35-45
