2. TED
KENNEDY (1932-2009) was the third
longest-serving member of the United States Senate in American
history (from November 7, 1962 until his death almost 47 years
later on August 25, 2009). Voters of Massachusetts elected him
to the Senate nine times—a record matched by only one other
Senator. President Obama has described his breathtaking span
of accomplishment: “For five decades, virtually every major
piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health, and
economic well being of the American people bore his name and
resulted from his efforts.” He was the conscience of his
party, and also the Senate’s greatest master of forging
compromise with the other party. Known as the “Lion of the
Senate,” Senator Kennedy was widely respected on both sides of
the aisle for his commitment to progress and his ability to
legislate. Offered here is a TLS, signed "Ted", Jan. 5, 1984,
1p, to Robert McNamara served as Secretary of Defense from
1961-1968
under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.
Kennedy thanks McNamara for sending "me a copy of your
University of
California speech. Believe me, I think this is a most fitting
Christmas greeting, and will look forward to reading the text
very carefully for, as you
know, this is a subject of enormous interest to me. Thanks
also for your encouraging remarks, Bob, and warm best wishes
throughout '84. Sincerely, Ted." On October 31, 1983, former
Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara spoke to a faculty
group at the University of California at San Diego. He said
that the nuclear missiles scheduled to be deployed in Western
Europe are militarily unnecessary and that many American
military planners share his view. A photocopy of the article
reporting McNamara's University of California speech is
included. 6¼ inches by 8⅝ inches, small tear from staple
at upper left edge mended on verso; browned at lower right
edge but overall a splendid example.......100-150
3. [ART] MORTON
GARCHIK (1929-2009) American
artist. He studied at the School of Visual Arts where he won
the First Prize in drawing. Since then he has received many
more prizes. He designed of the Book cover of “Gimpel The
Fool” by Isaac Bashevis Singer. His graphics have
appeared in the Seattle Art Museum’s International
Exhibitions, the Honolulu Printmakers International, DePaul
Univ. 7th Annual Contemporary American Printmakers Exhibition,
7th0 National at Ohio Univ., etc. He has had numerous
one-man shows in the United States and Canada. In New York his
work was represented by the Associated American Artists
gallery. The Minnesota Museum of Art and The Library of
Congress have acquired examples of his work. Original
pencil signed woodcut printed in dark ochre,
titled EMERGING PHILOSOPHER, numbered 13/200,
image approx. 8.5 x 14 in. plus margins. Fine
condition. Garchik had the following to say about
this woodcut - The joys and terrors of woodcut are the
changing states. Wood is cut away, the image evolves, with the
choice of stopping at a point which may be satisfactory, or
cutting further [with no possibility of return] in search of
a stronger statement latent in the block. This print shares
that experience. It contains three separate imprints of many
states, adding a dimension of time to the work.

4. [MUSIC - FRANCE] Henri
Montan Berton (1767-1844) French
composer, teacher, and writer. He is principally
remembered as a composer of operas, most of which were first
performed at the Opéra-Comique. Riding a wave of
anti-clericalism which arose at the time of the French
Revolution, his first real success was with Les rigueurs du
cloître (23 August 1790), "in which a young nun is saved from
entombment at the hands of a corrupt mother superior."[1] The
work has been described as the first rescue opera. One of his
greatest early successes was Aline, reine de Golconde (1803),
which was performed internationally. ALS, no date,
1p, about 4-1/4 x 7". The picture of him
is not included here. VG.............100-150

6. Florence
Pritchett Smith (1920-1965) TLS,
July 26, 1965, 1p., to Milton Ebbins, VP of Chrislaw
Productions. She asks Milt if it would be possible to get a
set of stills on the clothes designed for the film "The
Carpetbaggers", referring to the clothes worn by the brunette
girl who was married to George Peppard in the film. The
actress in that film, of course, was Carroll Baker. She signs
"Flo". Here's where this gets interesting. Florence was
a model for John Robert Powers and appeared in Life
Magazine. In 1940 she met and married Richard Canning. Soon
afterwards she became fashion editor of New York Journal
American, a journal owned by William Randolph Hearst. In 1943
Florence divorced Canning. The following year she met John F.
Kennedy. The couple spent a lot of time together. Betty
Spalding said that for Kennedy, "Over a long period of time,
it was probably the closest relationship with a woman I know
of." However, because Kennedy was a Roman Catholic, marriage
was out of the question. In 1947 Florence married Earl
E. T. Smith, member of the New York Stock Exchange. In June,
1957, President Dwight Eisenhower appointed Smith as
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Cuba. FBI
files reveal that over the next two years John F. Kennedy made
more than a dozen visits to Cuba in order to meet with
Florence. Florence also met Kennedy in Miami and Palm Beach,
where their homes were conveniently adjoined. According
to one account: "JFK would elude the Secret Service on
occasion in order to have trysts with women. He did this in
Palm Beach when he hopped a fence to swim with Flo Smith. The
Secret Service agents couldn't find him and called in the FBI.
They finally turned to Palm Beach Police Chief Homer Large, a
trusted Kennedy family associate. The Police Chief knew
exactly where to find Jack - next door in Earl E. T. Smith's
swimming pool. Jack and Flo were alone. Florence continued
working as a journalist. She also became a television
personality and appeared on programs such as What's My
Line? It was during this time she became friendly with
the journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. In 1965 Dorothy
Kilgallen managed to obtain a private interview with Jack
Ruby. She told friends that she had information that would
"break the case wide open". Aware of what had happened
to Bill Hunter and Jim Koethe [reporters who covered the
assassination and died shortly after, Kilgallen handed
her interview notes to Florence Smith. She told
friends that she had obtained information that Ruby and J. D.
Tippit were friends and that David Ferrie was involved in the
assassination of John F. Kennedy. On 8th November, 1965,
Dorothy Kilgallen, was found dead in her New York apartment.
She was fully dressed and sitting upright in her bed. The
police reported that she had died from taking a cocktail of
alcohol and barbiturates. The notes of her interview with Jack
Ruby and the article she was writing on the case had
disappeared. Florence Smith, died two days later of a cerebral
hemorrhage. Showing 2 photos below - one showing Flo with

7. [FILM & TV] Bill
Asher (1921-2012) American television and
film producer, film director, and screenwriter. He was one of
the most prolific early television directors, producing or
directing over two dozen series. With television in its
infancy, Asher introduced the sitcom Our Miss Brooks, which
was adapted from a radio show. He began directing I Love Lucy
by 1952. In 1964, he produced and directed Bewitched, which
starred his then-wife Elizabeth Montgomery. As a result of his
early success, Asher was considered an "early wunderkind of
TV-land," and was hyperbolically credited in one magazine
article with "inventing" the sitcom. TLS, 1965, 1 full
page, 8.5 x 11". To Milton Ebbins, Chrislaw
Productions. Asks for statements concerning the film he
directed "Johnny Cool" and the percentage
breakdown of the Patty Duke Show, which he also
directed. Signed Bill. Also included is a letter from
Fred Engel, agent for William Asher, dated 1963, sent to

American actor. He was a member of the "Rat Pack" and
brother-in-law to President John F. Kennedy, and more noted in

9. [MAINE] Henry
S. Burrage (1837-1926)
he was the First State Historian [Maine 1907-1926]. Henry
Sweetser Burrage was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, the son
of Jonathan Burrage and Mary Upton Burrage. He prepared for
college at Pierce Academy and graduated from Brown University
in 1861. After a year at Newton Theological Seminary, he
enlisted as a private in the 36th Massachusetts Volunteer
Infantry and rose to the rank of major. Wounded in the
shoulder at Cold Harbor, he was captured at Petersburg and
spent time in Libby Prison. At the end of the Civil War, Henry
Burrage resumed his studies at Newton, graduating in 1867. His
first and only pastorate was at the First Baptist Church in
Waterville, Maine from 1869 to 1873. For the next thirty-two
years, he was the editor of Zion's Advocate, a statewide
weekly Baptist newspaper which was based in Portland. Highly
respected in education circles, he was a trustee of Colby
College from 1881 to 1906, Newton Theological Seminary from
1881 to 1906, and Brown University from 1889 to 1901. Active
in veterans organizations, he served as chaplain of the
National Soldiers Home at Togus from 1905 to 1912. Burrage
excelled in the research and writing of Maine's Colonial
history, as is reflected in his publications. He was a member
of the Standing Committee as well as vice-president and
president of the Maine Historical Society. In 1907 Governor
William T. Cobb appointed him as State Historian, which he
held until his death on March 9, 1926, at the age of 89.

10. [SCIENCE] Joseph G.C. Cottier
(1874-1897) Cottier was a graduate student
in Columbia during the academic years 1895-7. The
exceptionally rapid progress he made justified the expectation
that he would soon become an original investigator of the
first order in the domains of mathematical physics. Joseph
Germains Charles Cottier was born in Jersey City, N. J., May
29, 1874. He was graduated from Stevens Institute of
Technology, with the degree of mechanical engineer in 1894.
During the following year he was employed in engineering work,
partly by the East River Gas Company of New York and partly by
the Blake Pump Company. Although successful in this work, it
proved of little interest to him, and he resolved to turn his
attention to studies which would lead him to an academic
career. Accordingly he applied for and was awarded a
scholarship in Columbia University, and he entered the School
of Pure Science in the autumn of 1895. He chose mechanics as
his major subject and mathematics and education as minors. At
the end of the academic year 1895-6 he was appointed fellow in
mechanics and received the degree of A.M. Continuing his
studies with marked proficiency, he was reappointed Fellow in
Mechanics at the close of the year 1896—7, and he expected to
complete the work required for the doctorate degree during the
present academic year. He had made a special study of the
science of hydromechanics. He had read and mastered nearly all
of the extensive and profoundly difficult literature of this
science, which has occupied the attention of the most eminent
mechanicians during the past two centuries. He had already
begun to produce original work in this field; and on departing
in July last for Europe he left for publication papers on the
equations of hydrodynamics in a form suitable for application
to problems connected with the movements of the earth's
atmosphere, and on the expression of the general equations of
hydrodynamics in terms of curvilinear coordinates. The first
of these papers has been published in vol. xxv of the Monthly
Weather Review of the United States Weather Bureau, and the
second will be published in the Mathematical Review.
Personally Mr. Cottier was an exceedingly unassuming man, and
modest almost to shyness with respect to his own attainments.
Because of these characteristics, and by reason of incessant
occupation with his studies, few of his associates, and few
even of his instructors, came to know him intimately. The few
to whom he became well known, however, held him in highest
esteem, as well for his singularly gentle and courteous
manliness as for the penetrating clearness and strength of his
intellectual capacity. It is fitting in this connection to
state that Mr. Cottier's parents have given his collection of
treatises and papers on the mathematico-physical sciences to
the library of the Department of Mechanics. They have thus
founded a permanent memorial of their son's devotion to
science, and have at the same time shown his and their
appreciation of the fellowship honors which Columbia had twice
bestowed upon him. [written by Prof. Robert S. Woodward in
1897]. Offered here is one of Cottier's original
manuscripts [typed & manuscript], titled and signed on
verso, 20 pages, 8 x 13". Soiled. The title:
"The Expression Of The General Equations Of Hydrodynamics In
Terms Of Curvilinear Coondinates." From the
personal papers of Robert Simpson Woodward (1849-1924)
American physicist and mathematician, born at Rochester,
Michigan. He graduated C.E. at the University of Michigan in
1872 and was appointed assistant engineer on the United States
Lake Survey. In 1882 he became assistant astronomer for the
United States Transit of Venus Commission. In 1884 he became
astronomer to the United States Geological Survey, serving
until 1890, when he became assistant in the United States
Coast and Geodetic Survey. In 1893 he was called to Columbia
as professor of mechanics and subsequently became professor of
mathematical physics as well. He was dean of the faculty of
pure science at Columbia from 1895 to 1905, when he became
president of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, whose
reputation and usefulness as a means of furthering scientific
research was widely extended under his direction. He was
elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1896. In
1898-1900 he was president of the American Mathematical
Society, and in 1900 president of the American Association for
the Advancement of Science. In 1915 he was appointed to the
Naval Consulting Board. He died in 1924 in Washington, D.C.
Professor Woodward carried on researches and published papers
in many departments of astronomy, geodesy, and mechanics. In
the course of his work with the United States Coast and
Geodetic Survey he devised and constructed the "iced bar and
long tape base apparatus," which enables a base line to be
measured with greater accuracy and with less expense than by
methods previously employed. His work on the composition and
structure of the earth and the variation of latitude found
expression in a number of valuable papers.......500-750

17. [FRANCE] Jacques
Vallée, Sieur Des Barreaux
(1599-1673) French poet. His great-uncle, Geoffroy
Vallée, had been hanged in 1574 for the authorship of a book
called Le Flau de la Joy. His nephew appears to have inherited
his scepticism, which on one occasion nearly cost him his
life; the peasants of Touraine attributed to the presence of
the unbeliever an untimely frost that damaged the vines, and
proposed to stone him. His authorship of the sonnet on
"Penitence", by which he is generally known, has been
disputed, notably by Voltaire. Des Barreaux was
apparently bisexual. Although he was later known as one of the
lovers of Marion Delorme, a famous courtesan, he also was the
lover of the freethinking poet Théophile de Viau, called the
"King of Libertines" by Jesuit prosecutors. During his
imprisonment in 1623–25 on charges of writing atheistic poems
with homosexual allusions, de Viau addressed a poem to Vallée,
"The Complaint of Théophile to his friend Tircis", reproaching
Des Barreaux for doing little to help him. After de
Viau's death in 1626, a contemporary biographer of high
society, Tallement des Réaux, referred to Des Barreaux as de
Viau's widow, "thus indicating that their physical
relationship was common knowledge at the time." Subsequently,
Des Barreaux was a lover of the libertine poet Denis Sanguin
de Saint-Pavin, the so-called "King of Sodom", "a consummate
gentleman" whose aristocratic rank and social connections
protected him from prosecution for his witty, homosexually
themed writings. In his Pensées, Pascal refers to him in
a passage about those who renounce reason and "become brute
beasts". A French mystery document on vellum, either
written and signed "Vallee" or about him. Approx.
7-3/4 x 1-3/4". Right edge affixed to back of an 1809

69. [OPERA] John M. Wieting M.D. (1817-1888) physician and medical lecturer. HHe is perhaps best known for his Wieting Opera House, considered a "world class" cultural institution. Originally, a building called Wieting Hall, which was a lecture hall, was built at 100 West Water Street at the corner of South Salina Street in 1852 and was lost to fire in 1856. The building was rebuilt and reopened in 1870 as the Wieting Opera House and had a seating capacity of 1,017. The first opera that took place in the house, however, did not occur until 1886 when the American Opera Company made a brief appearance. In fact, opera was never intended as the main venue in the theater. At that time, towns throughout America had opera houses where operas were seldom or never performed. The "opera house" designation simply provided a respectable cover for places that presented a variety of popular entertainments. Oftentimes they were called "museums." ALS, Bromfield House, 1854, 1p. T. MOORE - Lt. Col., aide to
Theodore Roosevelt during his first term of office. Died in
Texas. It was not until October, 1917, when he was World War I
commander of the 310th Field Artillery at Camp Meade, Md., that
Colonel Moore learned that a blow struck by him in a friendly
sparring bout with President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 had
caused blindness in one of his opponent's eyes. Distressed at
the news, he said, in part: "But could you ask for any better
proof of the man's sportsmanship than the fact that he never
told me what I had done to him, never told anybody else that I
know of - at least, it never got around to me till I saw in the
papers the other day that he had said that he lost the sight of
his eye while boxing with a captain of artillery who was his
aide. He didn't name anybody then, but I knew that he must have
meant me, for I happen to have been the only boxing aide he had
who was in the artillery." Signed 1919 Riggs National Bank

at Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the Bar in 1806, practising
in London until health problems forced him to return to
Cambridge in 1808. In 1816, Pryme began conducting lectures on
political economy at Cambridge, the first teaching of such a
topic at any English university, and in that same year his
lectures were published as a book entitled A Syllabus of a
Course of Lectures on the Principles of Political Economy. In
1828, he was made Professor of Political Economy by the
university senate, although a chair was not established for the
topic at Cambridge until just before his retirement. He was
politically active, and successfully opposed parliamentary
candidates sponsored by the Duke of Rutland, and eventually
winning a seat in the House of Commons representing Cambridge as
a Whig. Pryme worked hard in the parliament, pushing for
university reform at Oxford and Cambridge until his poor health
prompted his family to urge his retirement from parliament. He
returned to Cambridge and bought an estate in Wistow while
continuing to lecture and practice as a barrister on occasion.
He died in 1868. In 1870, his memoirs were published,
Autobiographic Recollections of George Pryme, edited by his
daughter Alicia Bayne. ALS, 1837, written on both sides. To

Mounted to larger sheet identifying the handwriting in 1840 and "Presented by Jas. W. Alexander." Dr John Pye-Smith was Theological Tutor at Homerton College near Hackney, London for forty-five years between 1805 and 1850, and minister of the Old Gravel Pit Chapel in Chatham Place, Hackney for nearly as long (1811-50). His pupils included Robert Halley (future Principal of New College, London), Samuel Dyer the missionary, and William Johnson Fox of the South Place Ethical Society. The son of a Sheffield bookseller, he was surrounded by books in his youth and, practically self-taught, rose not only to become a dissenting academic and author, but through his interest in science and geology, was elected to become the first Fellow of the Royal Society from a nonconformist background. He was also elected a Fellow of the Geological Society at a time when there was considerable debate about accepting the idea of geological time, and if so to find ways of reconciling this with the teachings of the Old Testament. During the politically turbulent 1790s, before moving to London he had taken over the editorship of the Sheffield Iris, the leading abolitionist newspaper in the North of England, during imprisonment of its editor, his friend James Montgomery. In 1830 Dr Pye Smith took the Chair of The Board of Congregational Ministers when it passed an anti-slavery motion to secure support from all Congregational chapels across the country in petitioning parliament:That we feel it to be a solemn duty to employ our influence with our congregations and the public, to promote petitions to both Houses of Parliament for the abolition of Colonial Slavery, and therefore pledge ourselves, and beg to recommend to our brethren throughout the kingdom to prepare from each congregation such petitions to parliament... The Congregationalists' 1833 abolition lecture, The Sinfulness of Colonial Slavery, was delivered at John Pye-Smith's Meeting House in Hackney by his former pupil, Robert Halley Dr John Pye Smith died in Hackney in 1851 and is buried below a marble chest tomb monument in Dr Watts' Walk, at the Congregationalists' non-denominational garden cemetery in the grounds of Abney Park, Stoke Newington.. 218. [FRANCE] Jean Soanen (1647–1740) French Oratorian and bishop of Senez. He was a convinced Jansenist. In opposition to the papal bull Unigenitus, he with Charles-Joachim Colbert, bishop of Montpellier, Pierre de la Broue who was bishop of Mirepoix, and Pierre de Langle who was bishop of Boulogne, appealed against it in 1717 to a general council. This group and their followers were known as Appellants; the council was though entirely hypothetical as an idea. Later, he sent out a pastoral letter to his congregation, urging the reading of Pasquier Quesnel. Pierre Guérin de Tencin, the archbishop of Embrun, then in 1727 had him exiled from his diocese. But Jean Soanen of Senez, a small mountain diocese in Provence, issued in 1726 a Pastoral instruction to his diocese, in which, at the age of 80, he reviewed his whole position in the controversy. He regretted that he had ever signed the Formulary of 1665, withdrew his adhesion to the Bull "Vineam Domini Sabaoth", blamed himself for prohibiting, against his real convictions, the moral Reflexions, and promised never to accept the Unigenitus. Soanen was deprived of his see by the Provincial Synoid of Embrun, which on carious canonical grounds he refused to recognize, and was banished to the abbey of Chaise Dieu in Auvergne, where he remained imprisoned till his death in 1740, at the age of 95. 279. [MUSIC- THEATRE] Gertrude "Gertie" Millar (later Countess of Dudley) (1879-1952) English actress and singer of the early 20th century, known for her performances in Edwardian musical comedies. Beginning her career at age 13, Millar was a prominent star of musical comedies for two decades. She married composer Lionel Monckton, who composed many of her shows and songs that she made famous. After Monckton died in 1924, Millar married the 2nd Earl of Dudley. As a child, Millar performed in London pantomimes, beginning with Babes in the Wood at the St. James Theatre in Manchester, at the age of 13. She started out as a singer and dancer in the music halls of Yorkshire. Later, she moved to London where she was soon earning good notices and better pay appearing in variety show bills. By 1897, she was playing the role of Phyllis Crosby in A Game of Cards at Shodfriars Hall, Boston, England. Next she toured in The New Barmaid in the role of Dora; in The Silver Lining; and as Sadie Pinkhose, the "other woman", in The Lady Detective. In 1899, she played Dandini in Cinderella at the Grand Theatre, Fulham. In the new century, she starred in a series of hit musical comedies produced by George Edwardes. In 1900, she played Isabel Blythe in the touring production of The Messenger Boy. Edwardes's next show was The Toreador in 1901 at the Gaiety Theatre in London. Lionel Monckton, one of the show's composers, had seen Millar in The Messenger Boy and requested that she be given the role of the bridesmaid Cora in the new musical, singing "Keep Off the Grass". She made the song popular and earned a second song, "Captivating Cora", and a third, "I'm not a simple little girl". These hits, and her featured role in A Country Girl (1902), established Millar in London. The Gaiety Theatre closed for renovations in 1902, and the last show at the old theatre was The Linkman; or, Gaiety Memories. Millar starred as Morgiana. She married Monckton in 1902, and he continued to write hit songs for her in subsequent shows. Millar became one of the most photographed women of the Edwardian period. She had top billing as the Hon. Violet Anstruther in The Orchid, the show that opened the new Gaiety (1903; introducing the songs "Little Mary", "Liza Ann", and "Come with me to the zoo"). She starred as Rosalie in The Spring Chicken (1905; singing "Alice sit by the fire" and "The Delights of London") and as Lally in The New Aladdin (1906). She next starred as Mitzi in The Girls of Gottenberg (1907; singing the duet "Two Little Sausages", with Edmund Payne, and the Wagnerian parody "Rhinegold"). Soon afterwards, Edwardes cast her as Franzi at the Hicks Theatre in the English-language production of Ein Walzertraum (A Waltz Dream, 1908) by Oscar Straus. Although Millar was able to sell the light musical comedy songs composed for her at the Gaiety, Oscar Straus's music was too demanding for her small voice, and she was sent to New York to star in the Broadway production of The Girls of Gottenberg. After she returned to London, some of Millar's biggest successes were still in front of her. They included the title role of the hit Gaiety musical, Our Miss Gibbs (1909), with Millar introducing the songs "Moonstruck", "Yorkshire", and "Our farm", all written for her by Monckton. Monckton and Millar then moved to Edwardes' newest theatre, the Adelphi, where she played the title role, Prudence Pym, in another international hit, The Quaker Girl (1910). In this, she popularised the songs "The Quaker Girl", "The Little Grey Bonnet", and "Tony from America". After this, she returned to continental operetta, playing Lady Babby in Edwardes's English language version of Franz Lehár's Zigeunerliebe (Gipsy Love, 1912) at Daly's Theatre . In this role, the musical demands were light and the show was a moderate success. She returned to the Adelphi to play Nancy Joyce in The Dancing Mistress (1912), and back at Daly's she played Kitty Kent in The Marriage Market (1913). This was followed by the role of Nan in a major revival of A Country Girl (1914). She also played Sallie Denbigh in The House of Bondage, a 1914 film. was a prominent lawyer in Los Angeles, active in the fight for
abortion rights and other civil rights. She then worked for a
number of lawyers, including Joseph L. Rauh, Jr., a prominent
civil rights lawyer, and for Arthur Goldberg. She co-authored
a number of briefs with Rauh on civil rights cases during the
1950s. In 1954, during the McCarthy Era, the Department of
Justice sought to fire Hilbert Zarky from his position with
the Department, based primarily on Norma’s very brief
involvement with Communism when she was an undergraduate in
the mid-1930s, along with such “crimes” as their belonging to
a liberal book club and being at meetings attended by
“suspect” individuals. After she and her husband filed
numerous declarations from friends and prominent individuals
regarding their loyalty to the United States, he was
reinstated to his position. In 1961 joined the law
firm of Mitchell, Silberberg and Knupp, becoming the
firm’s first woman partner in 1968. At Mitchell, Silberberg
and Knupp, she practiced primarily in the field of
entertainment law. Zarky was the first woman to serve as
President of the Beverly Hills Bar Association and was a
founding member of Women in Film. She was influential in
establishing Public Counsel, which is now “the largest
pro bono public interest law firm in the world.” She
also was active in the Constitutional Rights Foundation.
She was also a founder of California Women Lawyers. Zarky was
particularly active in the fight for legalized abortion. She
was “one of the two leading California attorneys” strategizing
the legal battles. She authored the ACLU’s amicus brief in
People v. Belous, in which the California Supreme Court upheld
a woman’s right to abortion. She then wrote an amicus
brief on behalf of the American Association of University
Women in Roe v. Wade, the case that established the right to
abortion on a nationwide basis. In 1979, Women in Film
established The Norma Zarky Humanitarian Award, which “is
presented to individuals who, like Ms. Zarky herself, have
demonstrated enlightened support for the advancement of equal
opportunity for all and devotion to the improvement of the
human condition.” Lengthy TLS, 1965, 1p, to Milt Ebbins,

339. [ART] André Berne-Joffroy (1915-2007) Former Director of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Iimportant art critic in France. He was responsible for many of the important Paris exhibitions of modern art during the 1950-1980 era. He is also credited with the rediscovery of the Italian artist Michelangelo Caravaggio [1571-1610], who had a formative influence on the Baroque school of painting. Infamous while he lived, Caravaggio was forgotten almost immediately after his death, and it was only in the 20th century that his importance to the development of Western art was rediscovered. Despite this, his influence on the new Baroque style that eventually emerged from the ruins of Mannerism, was profound. It can be seen directly or indirectly in the work of Rubens, Jusepe de Ribera, Bernini, and Rembrandt , and artists in the following generation heavily under his influence were called the "Caravaggisti" or "Caravagesques", as well as Tenebrists or "Tenebrosi" ("shadowists"). Andre Berne-Joffroy, said of him: "What begins in the work of Caravaggio is, quite simply, modern painting." Offered here are 23 manuscript pages written by Berne-Joffroy [UNSIGNED]. 383. PEGGY STEWART (1923- ) American Actress. Her family moved to
California in the mid '30s, where she made the acquaintance of
character actor Henry O'Neill. Aware that Paramount Pictures was
looking for a new face to play the part of Joel McCrea's and
Frances Dee's daughter in Wells Fargo (1936), O'Neill
recommended Stewart. The assignment led to numerous other roles
for the teenaged actress, who by the end of 1940 was not only
established in Hollywood but the wife of actor Don "Red" Barry
(Stewart was also the sister-in-law of another actor, Wayne
Morris). At about the time her marriage was breaking up in 1944,
Stewart signed with Republic Studios, where, starting with
Tucson Raiders (1944), she became resident leading lady for many
of Republic's western stars. She also appeared in serials at
Republic but preferred westerns because the shooting schedules
were shorter and she was able to wear a more varied wardrobe.
Leaving Republic in 1948, she freelanced until 1953, when she
briefly gave up acting to become a casting director at NBC
television. SIGNED/inscribed 8x10 photograph with

WALT KUHN
[1877-1949]. American painter. An ORIGINAL COOPER etching plate. The title is "MORNING". Typical Kuhn
style. Plate size 4 x 6 in. This plate still has some
life in it and etchings could be pulled from it. Very seldom does
an original etching plate by an important artist ever reach the
open market, as they usually are in institutional collections.
Provenance: Kuhn Estate. It is difficult to get a good scan of
this and the picture below isn't very good. He did not etch his
initials or signatureinto the plate. I don't think he ever etched
his signature into any of his plates although he sometimes would
etch initials. This is guaranteed to be an authentic Walt Kuhn
plate without a time limit to the original purchaser. We will send
a letter of guarantee and provenance to the buyer. The portrait
photo of Kuhn shown below IS NOT for sale. Kennedy Galleries [NYC]
held an exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints during which it was
indicated that there was only from 1 to
6 impressions ever pulled from this plate. Original plates by major artists seldom reach the
open market and it is remarkable to see a plate that had so few
prints pulled from it. A must for the SERIOUS Kuhn
collector...............2000-3000

initials, image about 2.5 x 3" plus margins. Identified
below "Drawn by Enneking - J.J." Proenance: removed from
a sketchbook kept by the friend and fellow artist,
Horace R. Burdick. It was not uncommon to find
sketches by other artists in a Burdick sketchbook. We believe that the
identification written below drawing is in the hand of
Enneking, based on comparison with a known example. After
a lengthy examination of the tiny initials on the drawing
we come to the conclusion, and I'm pretty certain a
correct conclusion, that the initials read: "JJE". The
problem we were having was the appearance of the first two
initials. The first looked more like an "N" and the middle
looked more like an "I". The front line of the first is
somewhat weaker and I saw it - that wasn't an N but but
looked more like a "V". which is really a "J". Then the
middle also is a "J" but with a weak left side. In other
words he wrote very tiny "JJE" but the Js were made like
"Vs" because they are written so small. Difficult to
explain in words - easier to see in real life. Also, the
identification on the page is important. To the
purchaseser: if you paid attention to what is said here,
you should not have a problem when drawing is received,
and upon examination of the initials. Put this all
together and it just makes sense. WOW, I'm not sure I've
ever gone to this length to explain authenticity.

[ART] Albert Robida (1848-1926) French painter, etcher, lithographer and writer, Albert Robida became famous both for his whimsical scenes of Paris life and for his highly regarded satirical art. Robida began his artistic career in 1866 when he began contributing his designs to French periodicals. This aspect of his art continued through his life and he established himself as one of the more popular artists of La Vie Parisienne, Le Rire and Fantasio. During the First World War, Albert Robida's suites of lithographs and commentaries, such as Villes Martyres proved to be of prime influence within the arts community. Original etching, "Les Graveurs du XIX Siecle" (Engravers of the 19th Century) as published in Paris by Henri Beraldi and printed Chardon & Sormamin 1891. The etching depicts a full portrait of a woman in full fashionable regalia. For the setting, Robida selects the seaside, as we can see in the background where some sailors are greatly admiring the legs of a bather. "Les Graveurs du XIX Siecle" is a fine example of the etched art by the French artist, Albert Robida. Image approx. 8-3/8 x 5-3/8 plus margins. There are some spots in the margins; slightly toned top edge. All faults will not show when matted properly...........200-300

[ART] Sir Charles John Holmes
(1868-1936) British painter, art historian and museum
director. His writing on art combined theory with
practice, and he was an expert on the painting techniques of
the Old Masters, from whose example he had learned to draw
and paint. Upon the retirement of Lionel Cust, Holmes
was appointed director of the National Portrait Gallery in
1909. He resigned this post in 1916 to take up his
appointment as director of the National Gallery.
Holmes was a draughtsman, painter in watercolours and oils,
and etcher, mostly of landscapes. Self taught, he developed
a highly personal style from studying European as well as
Japanese sources like Hiroshige and Hokusai. Later, he came
under the artistic influence of Ricketts, and he learned
etching from William Strang. He is also known for his
industrial landscapes in which industrial buildings and
activities play a major part. Examples for this can be found
at Samlesbury Hall for which he painted a series of views
around Blackburn und Preston (exhibited at Colnaghi's,
London, in 1928). His stature as an artist was
acknowledged when, in 1904 or 1905, he was admitted as a
member into the New English Art Club with whom he had
already exhibited from 1900. He was also six times
participant at the Venice Biennale between 1912 and
1930, and became a member of the Royal Society of
Painters in Watercolours in 1929 (associate from 1924;
vice-president in 1935). He held one-man shows at the Carfax
Gallery, Piccadilly, in 1909, 1911 and 1913. A memorial
exhibition was held in London by the Fine Art Society in
1937. Holmes received a knighthood in 1921, and was
made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in
1928, the year of his retirement. He also held honorary
doctorates from the universities of Cambridge and Leeds und
was made an Honorary Fellow of Brasenose College in
1931. Offered here is a modest original etching,
the title is "Scalloway Castle", unsigned, image approx.

[ART] Jacques Villon
(1875 - 1963) A painter and printmaker, Villon was known for his
Cubist-style works, and is especially noted by art historians
for "his creation of a purely graphic language for Cubism. He
first came to the attention of the American public when his work
was included in the 1913 New York Armory Show, which introduced
modernism to the United Sates. All of his work sold at this
exhibition. He was from a cultured family in the Normandy region
of France, and was much influenced by his maternal grandfather,
Emile Nicolle, who gave him early artistic training. Villon was
born with the name of Gaston Emile Duchamp, and was the older
brother of artists Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Marcel Duchamp and
Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Honoring the French medieval poet,
François Villon, and so as not to be confused artistically with
his siblings, he changed his name to Jacques Villon. Jacques
Villon died in his studio on June 9, 1963, and three years
later, Marcel Duchamp, his last surviving brother, organized an
exhibition of his work, which was held at the Musée National
d'Art Moderne in Paris. In 1922 Villon was commissioned by the
Galerie Bernheim-Jeune to produce a series of color aquatints
after 38 major 19th and 20th century paintings. These included
works after Braque, Matisse, Renoir, Manet, Picasso, Cezanne,
Dufy, Modigliani, Bonnard and numerous others. Villon
collaborated with these master artists and signed these prints
so that they provided the public with access to works which
otherwise would not be available. Color aquatint, signed in the
plate (not pencil signed), 1923, title "NATURE MORTE", after
Georges Braque, mat opening size 25-1/2 x 9 in. Framed. Not

See etching481. [ART] Peggy Bacon, one of America's most famous women artists. An ORIGINAL painting by the famous American artist, Peggy Bacon. Done in mixed media, she used ink and what appears to be a combination of watercolor and thinned oil paint. She has signed and dated this work 1971, and titled it THE BABES IN THE WOODS. The mat opening is 14 x 22.5 in. Executed on paper and in fine condition. Prints by Peggy Bacon are fairly common in the market, although expensive, and her paintings are quite scarce as the small number of auction records would indicate. This is a superb example of Bacon's work and should be considered important. Obviously its dark because the bear cubs are in the woods. This is guaranteed authentic and to have been painted and signed by Peggy Bacon, and we will send along a letter stating this. PEGGY BACON [1895-1987] A printmaker, illustrator, and author of children's books, Peggy Bacon later turned exclusively to fine art painting in watercolor, pastel, and oil. Her 1934 book of caricatures, "Off With Their Heads," established her as a leading satirist. Much of her work is satirical and lighthearted and frequently a commentary on the New York art world. She also chose many ordinary events in the lives of city people, giving these pieces a wry twist. She was born in Ridgefield, Connecticut to artist parents and studied at the Art Student's League. There in her drypoints, first completed in 1919, she was especially influenced by the realistic prints of John Sloan and George Bellows, but her style, with flattened forms and hardened contours, was more modern and abstract. In 1920, she married artist Alexander Brook, and during the next decade they were prominent figures in the Woodstock art colony. During the 1920s, she had two one-woman shows in New York and also illustrated and wrote numerous children's books. A satirical work on thirty-nine well known fellow artists, written in 1934 and called "Off With Their Heads," was funded by the Guggenheim Foundation. The book was greatly successful and stirred a demand for her caricatures, but she shied away from those subjects because they were hurtful to the subjects. In the late 1920s, she had began to explore lithographs, etchings, and pastel, but drypoint remained her favorite medium until the 1950s when she concentrated on oil painting. She was financially successful, selling her work well in New York, and she and her husband were part of the group of artists promoted by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. In 1940, she and her husband were divorced, and she continued to paint and also wrote novels. Her 1953 mystery, "The Inward Eye," earned the Edgar Allen Poe Mystery Award for best novel of the year. She lived to age ninety-two, spending the later years of her life at Cape Porpoise, Maine..............5000-7000

He came from the Burgess family of British artists, the son of portraitist William (d. 1812) and grandson of Thomas (fl. 1766-1786), and his own son John-Bagnold (1830-1897) also became a painter. Between 1809 and 1844, Burgess exhibited a large number of works at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, Suffolk Street and the New Water-Colour Society in London. He also served as landscape painter to William IV beginning in 1826. Offered here is an original lithograph titled "Thorn Trees, in Bushy Park, Middlesex", image approx. 15.5 x 11" plus margins. This lithograph was published by the firm of Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850), the famous English draftsman, lithographer and printer. He worked mainly in London, although he had trained in Paris as a painter and travelled extensively in Europe making topographical drawings. In 1817, on a visit to Munich, he was introduced to lithography by the pioneering lithographer Alois Senefelder. The following year he produced Twenty-four Views of Italy, a set of images he had drawn and lithographed. Dissatisfied with the way his work had been printed, Hullmandel set up his own lithographic press. The quality of work he published by himself and other artists such as Giovanni Belzoni helped popularize the topographical lithograph among British artists. Text by Riva Castleman Technics and Creativity Gemini GEL, 1971, 10.5 x 8.5 in. stiff wrappers in plastic clamshell box. 108 pp. 364 mostly thumbnail illustrations (20 full size in color), bibliography, index of artists. A Catalogue raisonne (to early 1971), published in a boxed edition of 22,500, with its problematic Jasper Johns "Target," an offset lithograph with applique paintbrush and three watercolor disks, in addition to the print , which is glued to the inside front cover of the box). Box also contains the catalog, a sheet of protective foam. The foam sheet is normally discolored and usually has three circular offprints from the watercolor disks. According to Richard S. Field ("Jasper Johns Prints 1970-1977"), the image was derived from a pencil drawing and collage of 1960 in the Sonnabend collection. A hand-pulled edition of 50 copies and six artists proofs was printed by Kenneth Tyler at Gemini in 1971. The offset edition was produced by Graphic Press, Los Angeles. Johns's participation in this enterprise was, at best, limited to the Gemini printing, which was hand-signed and numbered. The signature on the MoMA target was mechanically reproduced [the one offered here]. If it appears to have been signed in ink or pencil, forgery is indicated. The white clamshell box is spotted but intact. The other main factor involving this multiple is the condition of the offset target lithograph. As is often the case a former owner has wetted the watercolor blocks and started to paint the target but has only painted a small part in yellow. The brush is often missing as is missing here. 494. [ART] STEFAN HIRSCH [1899-1964] "Modern" artist closely aligned with the Precisionists, born in Nurnberg, Germany, to American parents. Growing up in Europe, he frequently visited museums and galleries, where he was introduced to the Old Masters and also became familiar with the innovations of contemporary painters. After studying law and art at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, Hirsch settled in New York in 1919. During the 1920s, he painted images of industrial subjects that show an attention to detail, clean, dry outlines, and harmonious colors. While his highly structured early works reveal his debt to Cezanne, Hirsch favored the urban rather than the natural landscape. Like Demuth and Sheeler, Hirsch was attracted to the man made world, the American machine aesthetic, and his works typically depict the skyline of Lower Manhattan in a Precisionist-influenced, hard-edged geometric style. When Duncan Phillips's included works by Hirsch in his 1926 exhibition, the collector stated: "The steady progress of young Stefan Hirsch may be followed here through influences to invention. The Farmyard is quaintly seen in its tempera colors "a la Fra Angelico." The Mill Town is as infallibly decorative as a Japanese print and yet oh how American! The canvas entitled New York is a symbolical decoration&emdash;a concept of the great city rearing its fabulous towers and its walls without windows above the menace of a black river under the purity of a pellucid sky. The grim battlements of Industry are all beautiful in a strange harmony of subtly orchestrated tones." Throughout the 1920s Hirsch's works won wide acclaim, and he continued to paint while experimenting with printmaking, various subjects, and styles. His works were exhibited frequently and collected by many prestigious American museums. In 1929, he traveled to Mexico, where he was befriended by muralists David Siqueiros and Diego Rivera. Their influence can be seen in Hirsch's Social Realist paintings of the 1930s, works that increasingly became more painterly and luminous. He executed a series of murals in this vein for Federal buildings. During the 1930s and 1940s he focused his energies on teaching, notably at Bennington College in Vermont [1934-1940] and the Art Students League [1940-1946]. In 1942 he joined the faculty at Bard College, where he was chairman of the Art Department for seventeen years before he retired in 1961. Hirsch&emdash;painter, printmaker, and educator&emdash;died in New York in 1964. [credit: from The Phillips Collection, founded by Duncan Phillips]. 498. [WALLY WALLGREN] Abian A. Wallgren [1891-1948] better known as "Wally" Wallgren, worked as a cartoonist for the Philadelphia Public Ledger and Washington Post before World War I, creating strips like 'Inbad the Sailor' and 'Tired Timothy'. So who was he? A Marine, for starters. An American soldier in the AEF during WW1, Abian "Wally" Wallgren drew comics for "Stars and Stripes." The Stars and Stripes, published exclusively in France during its seventeen-month run, used a layout typical of American newspapers of the day, with wide columns, "all-cap" headlines, and lots of illustrations. The editorial staff assigned to the newspaper was composed mostly of enlisted men, including several career journalists. Second Lieutenant Guy T. Viskniskki from the Wheeler Newspaper Syndicate, New York Times drama critic Alexander Woollcott, bibliophile John Winterich, and cartoonist Abian "Wally" Wallgren of the Washington Post were among those who contributed their experience and skill. Besides expressing editorial opinion, cartoons entertained the troops, offering them humorous stories and images that satirized everyday life in the military. Many of these spoofs, written in 1918 and 1919, remain relevant today. The most popular among the soldiers were Private Abian A."Wally" Wallgren's cartoons and irreverent "Helpful Hints," which poked fun at army conventions from food to uniforms to rank. When a new issue of The Stars and Stripes arrived, the soldiers scanned it first for the cartoons by "Wally" Wallgren. OFFERED HERE are 57 letters (1943-47) from Harold E. Homrig to Wally Wallgren, plus one bank check signed by Wallgren. Most of the letters are from 1946 and all are about Homrig working on a project concerning the exhibition of Wally's cartoons at military sites. Many of the letters have brief handwriting by Wally.
