2. [AVIATION] Douglas
Corrigan
(2907-1995) American aviator born in Galveston, Texas.
He was nicknamed "Wrong Way" in 1938. After a
transcontinental flight from Long Beach, California, to New
York, he flew from Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New
York, to Ireland, though his flight plan was filed to return
to Long Beach. He claimed his unauthorized flight was due to
a navigational error, caused by heavy cloud cover that
obscured landmarks and low-light conditions, causing him to
misread his compass. However, he was a skilled aircraft
mechanic (he was one of the builders of Charles Lindbergh's
Spirit of St. Louis) and had made several modifications to
his own plane, preparing it for his transatlantic flight. He
had been denied permission to make a nonstop flight from New
York to Ireland, and his "navigational error" was seen as
deliberate. Nevertheless, he never publicly admitted to
having flown to Ireland intentionally. ANS on

Promoted to Captain and commander of the company on September

6. Florence Pritchett Smith
(1920-1965) Autograph Letter Signed, Embassy of the United
States of America, Havana [Cuba], not dated but circa
1957-1959, 1p., to the Rabbi Frederick Solomon, who was also
a noted artist. Here's where this gets interesting.
Florence was a model for John Robert Powers and
appeared in Life Magazine. In 1940 she met and married
Richard Canning. Soon afterwards she became fashion editor
of New York Journal American, a journal owned by William
Randolph Hearst. In 1943 Florence divorced Canning. The
following year she met John F. Kennedy. The couple spent a
lot of time together. Betty Spalding said that for Kennedy,
"Over a long period of time, it was probably the closest
relationship with a woman I know of." However, because
Kennedy was a Roman Catholic, marriage was out of the
question. In 1947 Florence married Earl E. T. Smith,
member of the New York Stock Exchange. In June, 1957,
President Dwight Eisenhower appointed Smith as Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Cuba. FBI files reveal
that over the next two years John F. Kennedy made more than
a dozen visits to Cuba in order to meet with Florence.
Florence also met Kennedy in Miami and Palm Beach, where
their homes were conveniently adjoined. According to
one account: "JFK would elude the Secret Service on occasion
in order to have trysts with women. He did this in Palm
Beach when he hopped a fence to swim with Flo Smith. The
Secret Service agents couldn't find him and called in the
FBI. They finally turned to Palm Beach Police Chief Homer
Large, a trusted Kennedy family associate. The Police Chief
knew exactly where to find Jack - next door in Earl E. T.
Smith's swimming pool. Jack and Flo were alone. Florence
continued working as a journalist. She also became a
television personality and appeared on programs such as What's My
Line? It
was during this time she became friendly with the journalist
Dorothy Kilgallen. In 1965 Dorothy Kilgallen managed
to obtain a private interview with Jack Ruby. She told
friends that she had information that would "break the case
wide open". Aware of what had happened to Bill Hunter
and Jim Koethe [reporters who covered the assassination and
died shortly after, Kilgallen
handed her interview notes to Florence Smith.
She told friends that she had obtained information that Ruby
and J. D. Tippit were friends and that David Ferrie was
involved in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. On 8th
November, 1965, Dorothy Kilgallen, was found dead in her New
York apartment. She was fully dressed and sitting upright in
her bed. The police reported that she had died from taking a
cocktail of alcohol and barbiturates. The notes of her
interview with Jack Ruby and the article she was writing on
the case had disappeared. Florence Smith, died two days
later of a cerebral hemorrhage. Showing 2 photos below - one
showing Flo with Kennedy at the Stork Club in 1944. Rare

7. Eleazar
Lipa Sukenik (1889-1953) Israeli
archaeologist and professor at the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem. In Israel his first name is popularly known as
"Eliezer". Having arrived in Palestine in 1911
he worked as a school teacher and tour guide. He
participated in the "War of the Languages" that erupted
among Zionist activists in Palestine in 1913. He
served in the British army in World War I in the 40th
Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers which became known as the
Jewish Legion. In addition to his important
excavations in Jerusalem (including the "Third Wall" and
numerous ossuary tombs) he played a central role in the
establishment of the Department of Archaeology of the Hebrew
University. He recognized the importance of the Dead Sea
Scrolls to Israel and worked for the Israeli state to buy
them. In 1948, he published an article tentatively linking
the scrolls and their content to a community of Essenes,
which became the standard interpretation of the origin of
the scrolls, a theory that is still probably the consensus
among scholars, but has also been widely questioned. Offered

William Pope Duval (1784-1854) was the first civilian governor
of Florida Territory, succeeding Andrew Jackson who had been
military governor. In his twelve-year governorship, from 1822 to
1834, he divided Florida into four territories, established the
local court system, and chose Tallahassee as the territory’s
capital because of its central location. Duval County, where
Jacksonville is located, and Duval Street in Key West are named
for him. He was born in Virginia he was inclined to be
somewhat wild in his youth. While young (age 14) he
decided to go to Kentucky and told his father, who remarked, “If
I give you a Negro you will sell him the first chance and spend
the money you get for him; if I give you a horse you will bet
him off at the first horse race you see, and if I give you a
pocket full of money you will bet it off or give it away. You
love a gun and would not part with that.” With a light heart he
left home telling his family he wouldn’t come back until he was
a member of Congress. So he walked to Kentucky. He
arrived at Bardstown, Ky. and studied law, fell in love and
married the daughter of Col. Andrew Hynes. Col. Hynes was the
founder of Elizabethtown, which was named after his wife. Having
sown his wild oats he began to practice law in Elizabethtown. As
there were no lawyers there, he was appointed County Attorney of
Hardin County. In 1812 he ran for congress and was so popular
that no one opposed him. He served in congress, 1813-14. On his
first trip to Washington he visited his relatives in Virginia
for the first time since leaving, thus verifying his promise not
to return until he was a congressman. In 1822 he was appointed
Gov. of Florida by President Monroe, and re-appointed by
Presidents Adams and Jackson. Offered here is an ADS, 1812,
legal document concerning debt and Bleakley and Montgomery.

Indians; Miller, then young, was tall, slenderly built, as
active as a cat, and as fleet as hind, and as brave as Julius
Caesar. This company coming upon the Indians, suddenly, a
desperate fight ensued. Vertrees was killed at the first fire. A
stout warrior seized a white man, wrestled his gun from him and
was about to cleve his head with an axe. Miller at that moment,
with a celerity of action which few men could equal, and with a
power that few possessed ..... snatched the white man from the
Indian as he would a chicken from a hawk, and, with an equal
rapid motion, killed the Indian. This turned the tide, and the
remaining Indians fled, leaving several dead on the ground."In
1793 William McCIung was sworn and admitted to the bar as
attorney. William McClung, Esq., was appointed Commonwealth's
Attorney for this court. Commonwealth's Attorneys were not then
commissioned by the Governor, each county appointed their own
prosecuting attorney, and were paid out of the county levy.

62. [ART] Stow Wengenroth (1906-1978)
American artist and lithographer, born in 1906 in Brooklyn,
New York. Wengenroth was once called "America's greatest
living artist working in black and white" by the American
realist painter Andrew Wyeth, and he is generally considered
to be one of the finest American lithographers of the
twentieth century. He studied at the Art Students League of
New York under George Brant Bridgeman and John Carlson from
1923 to 1927, then at the Grand Central School of Art under
Wayman Adams. Wengenroth was elected a member of the National
Institute of Arts and Letters (renamed the American Academy of
Arts and Letters) in 1942 and was also a member of the
Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and the Prairie Printmakers.
He was elected an Associate of the prestigious National
Academy of Design in 1938, and a full Academician in 1941.
Wengenroth was also the author of several influential books on
lithography. Wengenroth's lithographs are found in most major
American collections, including the Library of Congress,
Whitney Museum of American Art, and Metropolitan Museum of
Art. During his career, Wengenroth became well-known for his
detailed depictions of the seascapes and landscapes of New
England and, particularly, Maine . As an artist, he eschewed
colour in his lithographs but rather focused on shadow, light,
and form to transmit detail and dimension. While his urban
scenes of Manhattan and the New York City environs are
especially coveted by the current market, Wengenroth was most
adept at creating sincere yet vivid simulacra of the New
England littoral and interior. Offered here is an unsigned
2-sided watercolor. Sand dunes on one side and a most unusual
abstraction watercolor on the other. This is the last of our
Wengenroths that we bought at the Bruce Collins auction in
Kennebunk, Maine. These were consigned to Collins from the
estate of Wengenroth. Youngs Fine Arts sold our companion
piece to this in their 7/12/97 sale, lot 52. It was 1-sided,
signed, almost identical scene, a little smaller, and brought
$660. We saved this one because it was nicer but mainly
because of the unusual abstraction on the one side. This is
guaranteed, without a time limit, to be by Stow Wengenroth and
we will send along a letter of guarantee to the winning
bidder. This piece is approx. 14-3/4 x 19-3/4 in. Pin holes in
the corners caused by Wengenroth. His watercolors &

[ART] Alexander Liberman (1912-1999)
Russian-American magazine editor, publisher, painter,
photographer, and sculptor. He held senior artistic positions
during his 32 years at Condé Nast Publications. When his
father took a post advising the Soviet government, the family
moved to Moscow. Life there became difficult, and his father
secured permission from Lenin and the Politburo to take his
son to London in 1921. Young Liberman was educated in Russia,
England, and France, where he took up life as a "White Émigré"
in Paris. He began his publishing career in Paris with
the early pictorial magazine Vu, where he worked under Lucien
Vogel and with photographers such as Brassaï, André Kertész,
and Robert Capa. After emigrating to New York in 1941, he
began working for Condé Nast Publications, rising to the
position of editorial director, which he held from 1962-1994.
Only in the 1950s did Liberman take up painting and, later,
metal sculpture. His highly recognizable sculptures are
assembled from industrial objects (segments of steel I-beams,
pipes, drums, and such), often painted in uniform bright
colors. Prominent examples of his work are in the collections
of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Storm King Art Center,
Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Pyramid Hill Sculpture
Park, Tate Gallery, and the Guggenheim Museum. His massive
work "The Way", a 65 feet x 102 feet x 100 feet
structure, is made of eighteen salvaged steel oil tanks, and
became a signature piece of Laumeier Sculpture Park, and a
major landmark of St. Louis, Missouri.Offered here is a large

64. [ART] Jacques Villon (1875 - 1963) A
painter and printmaker, Villon was known for his Cubist-style
works, and is especially noted by art historians for "his
creation of a purely graphic language for Cubism. He first came
to the attention of the American public when his work was
included in the 1913 New York Armory Show, which introduced
modernism to the United Sates. All of his work sold at this
exhibition. He was from a cultured family in the Normandy region
of France, and was much influenced by his maternal grandfather,
Emile Nicolle, who gave him early artistic training. Villon was
born with the name of Gaston Emile Duchamp, and was the older
brother of artists Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Marcel Duchamp and
Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Honoring the French medieval poet,
François Villon, and so as not to be confused artistically with
his siblings, he changed his name to Jacques Villon. Jacques
Villon died in his studio on June 9, 1963, and three years
later, Marcel Duchamp, his last surviving brother, organized an
exhibition of his work, which was held at the Musée National
d'Art Moderne in Paris. In 1922 Villon was commissioned by the
Galerie Bernheim-Jeune to produce a series of color aquatints
after 38 major 19th and 20th century paintings. These included
works after Braque, Matisse, Renoir, Manet, Picasso, Cezanne,
Dufy, Modigliani, Bonnard and numerous others. Villon
collaborated with these master artists and signed these prints
so that they provided the public with access to works which
otherwise would not be available. Color aquatint, signed in the

Georges Braque, mat opening size 25-1/2 x 9 in. Framed. Not

Russell was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1907 and to the Mississippi State Senate in 1909. n 1912, he successfully passed a bill prohibiting secret and exclusive societies at the public institutions of higher learning. The law stayed on the books for twelve years. Russell was elected to the office of lieutenant governor in 1915 and elected governor in 1919. His term was marked by crop failures due to the boll weevil. Russell also filed an antitrust suit against several fire insurance companies for their business practices. In 1923, he was sued for seduction and breach of promise by his former secretary Frances Birkhead.[1] Russell was acquitted and he blamed the lawsuit on the fire insurance industry. [CIVIL WAR] The Great
Locomotive Chase or Andrews' Raid was a
military raid that occurred April 12, 1862, in northern Georgia
during the American Civil War. Volunteers from the Union Army,
led by civilian scout James J. Andrews, commandeered a train and
took it northward toward Chattanooga, Tennessee, doing as much
damage as possible to the vital Western and Atlantic Railroad
(W&A) line from Atlanta to Chattanooga as they went. They
were pursued by Confederate forces at first on foot, and later
on a succession of locomotives. Because the Union men had
cut the telegraph wires, the Confederates could not send
warnings ahead to forces along the railway. Confederates
eventually captured the raiders and executed some quickly as
spies, including Andrews; some others were able to flee. Some of
the raiders were the first to be awarded the Medal of Honor by
the US Congress for their actions. As a civilian, Andrews was
not eligible. Offered here: USA TAX RECEIPT USED

71. [AVIATION] Alfred Lawson (1869-1954) professional baseball player, manager and league promoter from 1887 through 1916 and went on to play a pioneering role in the US aircraft industry, publishing two early aviation trade journals. In 1904, he also wrote a novel, Born Again, clearly inspired by the popular Utopian fantasy Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy, an early harbinger of the metaphysical turn his career would take with the theory of Lawsonomy. He is frequently cited as the inventor of the airliner and was awarded several of the first air mail contracts, which he ultimately could not fulfill. He founded the Lawson Aircraft Company in Green Bay, Wisconsin, to build military training aircraft and later the Lawson Airplane Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to build airliners. The crash of his ambitious Lawson L-4 "Midnight Liner" during its trial flight takeoff on May 8, 1921, ended his best chance for commercial aviation success. In 1908 he was involved in trying to start a new professional baseball league, the "Union Professional League" which took the field in April but folded one month later. In the 1920s, he promoted health practices including vegetarianism and claimed to have found the secret of living to 200. He also developed his own highly unusual theories of physics, according to which such concepts as "penetrability", "suction and pressure" and "zig-zag-and-swirl" were discoveries on par with Einstein's Theory of Relativity. He published numerous books on these concepts, all set in a distinctive typography. Lawson repeatedly predicted the worldwide adoption of Lawsonian principles by the year 2000. He later propounded his own philosophy&emdash;Lawsonomy&emdash;and the Lawsonian religion. We could go on and on but we've said enough here. This guy, it appears, was great as a starter, but not a finisher. Offered here is a signed [on title page] copy of his book "AIRCRAFT HISTORY", published in Detroit in 1947, 224 pages. concerning Patty Duke. Includes: 1] A brief
TLS signed "Bill" [Wm. Peyton Marin],
dated 1965, to Milton Ebbins. Sending a contact to be
signed. Marin was Joseph P. Kennedy's principal legal counsel, was
acknowledged to be one of his closest advisers. 2] The
actual agreement bewteen CHRISLAW PRODUCTIONS and PATTY DUKE
ENTERPRISES CORP., covering the production of "TIME OUT FOR
GINGER". This agreement is signed by Milton
Ebbins and John Ross. Milton
Ebbins (1912–2008) Film executive,
songwriter ("Yale Blues", "Basic Boogie") and composer. Ebbins
helped produce JFK’s 1961 Inaugural Ball and the subsequent
1962 JFK Anniversary Gala. In May of 1962, Ebbins escorted a
very late Marilyn Monroe to Madison Square Garden where she
famously — and breathlessly — sang “Happy Birthday, Mr.
President.” He was also the man that Lawford called after
speaking to Monroe the night of her death in August of 1962.
Ebbins was one of the few allowed inside the White House after
the JFK assassination. As the link between Washington and
Hollywood, Ebbins helped Kennedy family patriarch and former
ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy navigate through the movie
business, not only keeping him apprised of his son-in-law’s
career moves but at one point advising him against purchasing
United Artists’ movie studio. At the time of his death, Ebbins
was working with his friend, actor Bill Paxton, on an HBO
project about the Kennedy assassination.
Ebbins music career began in 1936, he formed his own
orchestra, then became music director at CBS, and went to New
York in 1938, joining an advertising agency's radio
department. He also had been a road manager for the Jack Jenny
and Count Basie orchestras, and then a personal manager.
He left his career as bandleader and became a talent manager,
rising to become one of Hollywood’s top personal managers,
guiding the careers of Count Basie, Sarah Vaughn, Billy
Eckstine and singer Vic Damone. Because of Ebbins’ musical
background and his adeptness at arranging scores, he had a
knack for picking hit songs for his clients. He also
represented actresses Elizabeth Montgomery and Patty Duke,
comedian Mort Sahl and actor Peter Lawford, who Ebbins managed
for 35 years.
John and Ethel
Ross, became Patty Duke's managers. The Rosses
recognized her talent and promoted her as a child actress.
Soon after The Miracle Worker became so successful, John and
Ethel Ross spoke to Anna’s [later know as Patty] mother
telling her that they felt they needed complete control of her
daughter. They needed to make sure her life was acting and
little else, and the only way they could continue to teach her
the skills she would need as an actress was if Anna moved in
with them full time. Frances, having little financial and
emotional security of her own, agreed to let her youngest
daughter live with the Ross’s. Anna took this personally and
for the next several years she resented her mother for giving
her up to the Ross’s while all she wanted to do was stay at
home with her favorite person in the world: the woman who gave
birth to her. Anna’s name had already been
professionally changed to “Patty Duke” by the Ross’s, in a
manner that would keep Anna occupied on her psychiatrist’s
couch for many years to come. “Anna Marie is dead”
Ethel once said to her. “You’re Patty now.” As Patty’s success
continued, the Ross’s behavior would become more and more
distorted and dysfunctional. Condition is very good.

very unusual........150-250
73. [FILM] Layte Bowden -
Pan-American Airlines stewardess who kept company with Peter
Lawford for the two years he and his ex-wife, Pat Kennedy, lived
at opposite ends of the country. She was a former beauty queen,
a one-time receptionist and secretary to then-Sen. George
Smathers (D-Fla.) who graced Roll Call’s pages in 1960 as part
of a double header baseball-themed shot, went on to join the jet
set — literally. After leaving the Hill in 1962, she, whom
Life Magazine once featured in an article about “pretty girls”
in Washington, joined the ranks of the Pucci-clad Pan Am
stewardesses. “We were treated like movie stars on Pan Am,” she
said. In her role at the airline, she also flew on White House
press charters as chief purser, accompanying Presidents John
Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon on official
trips. She was with JFK in Berlin when he gave his famous
“Ich bein ein Berliner” speech and in Dallas the day he was
shot. “I was on Air Force One when the word came in” that he had
died, she said. “I fainted in the aisle and somebody got brandy
and poured it down me.” Before she traded in her swinging-single
gal status to marry Butler Aviation CEO Paul Dopp in 1971, the
Floridian said she also dated a dizzying array of Congressmen,
movie stars, and other high-ranking officials, including
then-Rep. John Brademas (D-Ind.), Warren Beatty and Kennedy
brother-in-law and Rat Packer Peter Lawford. She had a small
role in the Lawford-produced film “Billie,” starring Patty Duke.
In the mid-1960s, Dopp and CBS News Anchor Dan Rather began
collaboration on a book based on their experiences traveling
with presidents but never completed it because she “was so busy
having a good time.” Rare ALS, 1966, 1p, to Milt

[NAVAL HISTORY] Henry O.
Rittenhouse (1851-1927) American Naval
Commander. ALS, Apia, Samoa, May 18, 1889, 2 full
pages. To naval officer Henry Lieut. Commander Henry W.
Lyon. “My Dear Lyon, The departure of the ships and the
beautiful casting of the “Nipsic” the evening you left
Apia was a relief and pleasure to the Admiral. You
turned around beautifully from your narrow birth. I hope you
had no difficulty in making Pago Pago, and that all goes on
well. The Admiral’s heart is constantly with you, and if
good wishes are of any avail you will be abundantly
successful. Your volunteering, under all the circumstances was
a great support to the Admiral I know, and I tell him
constantly that there is nothing that will be left undone now
to carry out his desires. He is very confident and hopeful.
There is nothing on file in the office regarding your
volunteering, and yesterday the Admiral mentioned it. I think
it is pre-eminently due you, in fact it is very desirable for
many consideration (touching yourself, not the Admiral) that
your offer should be in the archives. I would suggest
therefore that you reduce it to writing and date anterior to
your assignment to the Nipsic. I know the Admiral would
be pleased to have it so. The Wainui arrived yesterday
bringing dates May 6th. Reported fine weather all the way up
from Auckland.......” Light damp staining right edge of
both pages doesn’t affect. USS Nipsic was a
gunboat. On 15 March 1889, Nipsic rode at anchor in Apia
Harbor with USS Vandalia, USS Trenton,
HMS Calliope, and three German naval vessels, Adler,
Olga, and Eber, along with six merchantmen. Gale-force winds
arose, and preparations for leaving harbor were begun, but
departure was delayed in the hope that conditions next morning
would be more favorable for the sortie. However, by early
morning on 16 March the harbor was a mass of foam and spray as
hurricane-force winds battered the ships in the 1889 Apia
cyclone. Only Calliope, larger and more strongly powered
than the others, was able to leave the harbor. Vandalia,
Trenton, the three German ships, and the merchantmen were all
sunk; Nipsic's captain, Cmdr. D. W. Mullin, was able by superb
seamanship to beach his ship. Mullin was replaced by Henry W.
Lyon. While severely damaged by the pounding she received on
the beach, Nipsic's hull was intact, although much of her
topside structure was battered, all of her propeller blades
damaged, two boilers spread and useless, and eight of her crew
lost. Refloated and her engines repaired, Nipsic cleared Apia
on 9 May for Auckland, but was turned back by heavy seas. On
15 May she again sailed, for Pago Pago, Fanning Island, and
Honolulu, arriving on 2 August. Provenance: Estate of
Admiral Henry W. Lyon, who had a distinguished Naval career,
was honored for his service in the Spanish-American war where
he commanded the U. S. S. Dolphin. Lyon and his wife, Liela,
bought a house in Paris Hill, Maine in 1899 and moved there
full time when he retired from the Navy in

the National Academy of Design, New York City, when he was only
fourteen. He traveled by himself to Paris at the tender age of
fifteen to study at the Academie Julien with Jean-Paul Laurens,

New York City Armory show, on Lexington Avenue, where European
modernism was introduced to the American public for the first
time en masse, along with American artists well-known at the

Picasso's pink and blue periods. By the late 1920s, Karfiol's
style had moved toward Renoir. Karfiol, an author and teacher,
as well as a painter, spent his summers in Ogunquit, Maine from
1914 until his death at Irvington-on-Hudson, New York in 1952.
He was a member of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

79. [ART] Edmund Henry Garrett
(1853 - 1929) American painter, etcher. He was an
illustrator, bookplate-maker, and author—as well as a highly
respected painter—renowned for his illustrations of the
legends of King Arthur. Garrett was born in Albany, New
York. While little is known of his initial art
education, Garrett rose through the ranks to become a
distinguished member of the Boston Art Club and the Copley
Society of Art, and was an acquaintance and colleague of
renowned impressionist artist Childe Hassam. He studied at the
Académie Julian in Paris under Gustave Boulanger, Jules
Lefebvre, John Paul Laurens, and Hector Leroux. After residing
in Paris for approximately five years, he returned to America
to establish a successful studio in Boston. Garrett
provided the chief influence for Childe Hassam's first study
trip to Europe in July 1883. On June 30, 1883, Garrett and
Hassam sailed to Europe aboard the SS Anchoria, then travelled
for several months throughout Great Britain, The Netherlands,
France, Italy, Switzerland and Spain studying paintings from
the old masters and creating watercolors of the European
countryside. In late August 1883, both Garrett and Hassam
sailed aboard the SS Alsatia to several Spanish ports before
crossing the Atlantic back home. After they both
returned to Boston, Garrett resumed his illustration work for
various publishers, which was very much in demand, keeping him
from spending energy on his watercolors. During this time,
Garrett worked at a studio located at 12 West Street in
Boston, which he shared with Hassam and fellow-artist Charles
Henry Turner. In 1884, Garrett exhibited two watercolors
at the Pennsylvania Academy ("A Street in Granada" and "El
Mirador de la Reina, Alhambra") in 1884. He also exhibited "A
Street in Granada" at the "Third Annual Exhibition of the
Paint and Clay Club," which was held at the Gallery of the
Boston Art Club in March 1884. During the last two
decades of the nineteenth century, Edmund Garrett's paintings
and etchings were widely exhibited throughout the United
States and in France at the Paris Salon. Offered

81. [CIVIL WAR] Daniel
McCook (1798-1863) was an attorney and an
officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. He
was one of two Ohio brothers who, along with 13 of their sons,
became widely known as the “Fighting McCooks” for their
contributions to the war effort. With the outbreak of the
Civil War, McCook, although 63 years old, volunteered his
services to the Union. He was commissioned as a major and
paymaster. When Confederate Brig. Gen. John H. Morgan led his
troops through southern Ohio during Morgan's Raid, Major
McCook joined in the advance of the Union pursuit. Early in
the morning of July 19, 1863, Federal troops attacked Morgan
at Buffington Island, where the Confederates were planning to
cross the Ohio River back into Kentucky. McCook was shot and
mortally wounded. He died two days later, and his body was
buried with full military honors in Spring Grove Cemetery in
Cincinnati, Ohio. Manuscript Document Signed, Ohio,

86. [ILLINOIS] Jacob
Bunn (1814-1897) Bunn came to
Illinois in 1836 and resided for a time in Springfield. He
soon moved to Beardstown, and afterwards to Naples, but
returned to Springfield on July 1, 1840, and established the
grocery firm of McConnell, Bunn, and Company. Bunn soon
purchased the interests of his partners and established the
wholesale house of Jacob Bunn. By 1850, Bunn possessed real
estate valued at $17,000. In 1851, Bunn married Elizabeth
Ferguson, who died in 1886. They had four sons and two
daughters together. In 1856, Bunn was treasurer of the first
library association in Springfield. In 1858, his business had
assumed such proportions that he decided to add a separate
department devoted exclusively to banking. For more than
twenty years, he conducted the largest business of its kind in
central Illinois. In 1860, Bunn was a banker with real estate
valued at $64,000 and personal property worth $135,000. Bunn
became a stockholder in the Springfield Watch Company in 1870,
and in 1879, he was elected its president and filled that
position until his death. Bunn was a pallbearer at
Lincoln's funeral. Jacob would be one of several
Illinois Republicans who in 1863 complained to President
Lincoln about the behavior of two of his patronage appointees
in Springfield - Lincoln's brother-in-law, Ninian Edwards and
William H. Bailhache. Lincoln removed them from
office. Jacob. Bunn was a personal friend of Lincoln. In
1859, Bunn advanced Lincoln $400 for the purchase of the
Illinois State Staats-Anzeiger, a German newspaper, published
in Springfield which Lincoln later sold for the same price he
paid for it. Jacob Bunn would later perform valuable

88. Dorothy
Shakespear Pound (1886-1973), daughter
of novelist Olivia Shakespear, was an artist who married
American poet Ezra Pound. One of small number of women
vorticist painters, she had art work published in the
short-lived but influential literary magazine BLAST.
Dorothy and Pound first met in 1909 and after a long courtship
the two married in 1914. They lived in Paris from 1920 until
1924, and in 1925 settled in Rapallo, Italy. In spite of her
husband's 50 year affair with Olga Rudge, whom he met in Paris
in the early 1920s, Dorothy stayed married to Pound. In 1926
she gave birth to a son Omar Pound, who was raised in England
by her mother. By the 1930s she received a number of family
bequests making her financially independent, but lost much of
her money following Pound's advice to invest in Benito
Mussolini's fascist regime. Toward the end of World War
II, Dorothy and Pound were evacuated from their home in
Rapallo and for a period she lived with Pound in Rudge's home.
After the war, when Pound had been arrested for treason and
incarcerated on grounds of insanity in Washington, D.C., she
moved there, visiting daily, taking control of his estate, and
staying with him until his release. They returned to Italy in
1958; in 1961 she moved to London, leaving her husband to live
out the last decade of his life with Olga Rudge. TLS,

One of America's Earliest Western Singing Groups
92. [MUSIC] The Sons of the Pioneers are one of America's earliest Western singing groups whose classic recordings set a new standard for performers of Western music. Known for the high quality of their vocal performances, musicianship, and songwriting, they produced finely-crafted and innovative recordings that have inspired many Western music performers and remained popular through the years. Since 1933, through many changes in membership, the Sons of the Pioneers have remained one of the longest-surviving country music vocal groups in history. Between 1935 and 1984, the Sons of the Pioneers appeared in 87 films, several movie shorts, and a television series. In 1937, the Sons Of The Pioneers signed a deal with Columbia Pictures to appear in a number of movies. In 1938, Leonard Slye was offered a contract as an actor with rival Republic Pictures. Part of that deal required him to officially leave the group. Leonard Slye changed his name to Roy Rogers, and went on to achieve major success as a singing cowboy in the movies. Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers still remained close throughout the coming years. When their contract with Columbia Pictures ended, they signed a new contract with Republic Pictures to be with Roy. 98. [MARYLAND] Augustus Williamson Bradford (1806-1881) he was the 32nd Governor of Maryland from 1862 to 1866. He served as governor during the Civil War and paid a heavy price for his devotion to the Union. In February 1861, Governor Thomas H. Hicks appointed Bradford one of Maryland’s delegates to the Washington Peace Conference, where he made a speech supporting the Union. Following the conference, the Union Party named Bradford as its candidate for governor, opposing the Democratic candidate General Benjamin C. Howard. Bradford defeated Howard by approximately 30,000 votes and took office on January 8, 1862. During his term, he violently opposed the Federal government’s interference in Maryland’s elections, upheld the dignity of the State government and defied the harsh and arbitrary military occupation, and went to great lengths to keep the State in the Union. At the same time he upheld the Federal government's authority although he differed with its methods. In September 1862, he was one of the many northern governors to attend the Loyal War Governors' Conference in Altoona, Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, the Confederates invaded Maryland three times. During the last of these, Bradley T. Johnson’s raiders visited Bradford’s home in July 1864, and during his absence, burned it to the ground together with all his furniture, library, and papers. This action was partially in retaliation for Union General David Hunter’s burning of the home of Governor John Letcher of Virginia, and partially because of Bradford’s "uncompromising spirit and strong leanings." During his four years in office, Augustus Bradford released Samuel Green (freedman) from jail on the condition he leave the state. Green was an African-American slave and minister, who was jailed in 1857 for possessing a copy of the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. DOCUMENT SIGNED, 1865, Mechanics Bank, approx. 7-1/2 x 2-3/4. Confederate Army. In 1863, Pratt tried to vote in the November

loyalty oath. Pratt and his secretary Col. Nicholson were
arrested because of the refusal on November 21, 1863. He was
imprisoned at Fort Monroe, but was later released. He moved to
Baltimore, Maryland in 1864, resuming the practice of law. The

became Colonel of the 12th Foot six months later. In 1797 he
transferred to the Grenadier Guards, but resigned his
commission in 1801. He then devoted himself to politics,
sitting in parliament as a Tory. His attitude on various
questions became gradually more Liberal, and his support of
Catholic emancipation lost him his seat in 1826. He was then
raised to the peerage as Baron Wharncliffe of Wortley, a
recognition both of his previous parliamentary activity and of
his high position among the country gentlemen. At first
opposing the Reform Bill , he gradually came to see the
undesirability of a popular conflict, and he separated himself
from the Tories and took an important part in modifying the
attitude of the peers and helping to pass the bill. SIGNED
