The Samoan Crisis was a confrontation standoff
between the United States, Imperial Germany and Great
Britain from 1887–1889 over control of the Samoan Islands
during the Samoan Civil War. The incident involved three
American warships, USS Vandalia, USS Trenton and USS Nipsic
and three German warships, SMS Adler, SMS Olga, and SMS
Eber, keeping each other at bay over several months in Apia
harbour, which was monitored by the British warship HMS
Calliope.
The standoff ended on 15 and 16 March when a cyclone wrecked
all six warships in the harbour. Calliope was able to escape
the harbour and survived the storm. Robert Louis Stevenson
witnessed the storm and its aftermath at Apia and later
wrote about what he saw. The Samoan Civil War continued,
involving Germany, United States and Britain, eventually
resulting, via the Tripartite Convention of 1899, in the
partition of the Samoan Islands into American Samoa and
German Samoa.
1. [NAVAL HISTORY] Rear Admiral
Richard G. Davenport,
USN, who was an officer of USS Nipsic during the Samoa Disaster of 1889. ALS,
USS Nipsic, at Ancher, Pago-Pago Harbor, Samoa, May 29,
1889. To Lieut. Comdr. Henry W. Lyon, who
was at this time in commander of the Nipsic. Henry W.
Lyon would later become a Rear Admiral. During the Samoa Disaster of 1889, in
which two US warships were lost and one severely
damaged, Lyon was responsible for the rescue of most of
one foundering ship's crew. He also volunteered to sail the
damaged USS "Nipsic" back to Hawaii with a skeleton crew,
which took several months. The hurricane struck March 15-16, destroyed the
fleets of three antagonists: Germany , England & the
United States (one English ship escaped unscathed during the
storm, to the cheers of the doomed Americans). On 15
March 1889, Nipsic rode at anchor in Apia Harbor with USS
Vandalia, USS Trenton, HMS Calliope, and three German naval
vessels, Adler, Olga, and Eber, along with six merchantmen.
Gale-force winds arose, and preparations for leaving harbor
were begun, but departure was delayed in the hope that
conditions next morning would be more favorable for the
sortie. However, by early morning on 16 March the harbor was a
mass of foam and spray as hurricane-force winds battered the
ships in the 1889 Apia cyclone.[2] Only Calliope, larger and
more strongly powered than the others, was able to leave the
harbor. Vandalia, Trenton, the three German ships, and the
merchantmen were all sunk; Nipsic's captain, Cmdr. D. W.
Mullin, was able by superb seamanship to beach his ship. While
severely damaged by the pounding she received on the beach,
Nipsic's hull was intact, although much of her topside
structure was battered, all of her propeller blades damaged,
two boilers spread and useless, and eight of her crew lost.
Refloated and her engines repaired, Nipsic cleared Apia on 9
May for Auckland, but was turned back by heavy seas. On 15 May
she again sailed, for Pago Pago, Fanning Island, and Honolulu,
arriving on 2 August. Included with the letter is a
commemorative booklet is dedicated
to Lyon, who was serving on the Trenton when the disaster
happened. The letter offered here, written by Davenport,
who was an officer on the Nipsic, commanded by Cmdr. D.W.
Mullin. An extraordinary letter giving an account of
Mullin's poor judgment which led to the ship's lack of
discipline. He details several things that Mullin
said or did. About this time Mullin was dismissed
from his command and Henry Lyon became commander of
the Nipsic. Written
at the time and place of this historic event. The letter is
in fine condition; pamphlet shows old damp staining. Scans
below show picture of Lyon and also Mullin [therse are not
included with this lot]. Admiral Henry W. Lyon, who had a distinguished Naval
career, was honored for his service in the
Spanish-American war where he commanded the U. S. S. Dolphin.
Lyon and his wife, Liela, bought a house in Paris Hill,
Maine in 1899 and moved there full time when he retired
from the Navy in 1907............300-400

2. [ART] Sir Francis Seymour Haden
( 1818-1910 ) English
surgeon, best known as an etcher. Haden's printmaking was
invigorated by his much younger brother-in-law, James
Whistler, at the Haden home in Sloane Street in 1855. A
press was installed there and for a while Haden and
Whistler collaborated on a series of etchings of the
Thames. The relationship and project did not last. Haden
followed the art of original etching with such vigor that
he became not only the foremost British exponent of that
art but brought about its revival in England. His
strenuous efforts and perseverance, aided by the
secretarial ability of Sir WR Drake, resulted in the
foundation of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and
Engravers. As president he ruled the society with a strong
hand from its first beginnings in 1880. ORIGINAL

popular example of his
work. He also did a
number of brilliant
still lifes, as well as
designs for musical

the letters were written
from Ogunquit,
Maine where the Kuhn's
owned a home with a
studio. At the end of
1948 he had a nervous
breakdown. In some of
his letters he starts to

7. [FRANCE] ANTOINE-ALEXANDRE BARBIER (1765-1825) Prior to the Revolution, Barbier was a maths and physics teacher, and in 1789, he was the vicar at Dammartin. He accepted the "constitution civile du clergé" and became priest at La Ferté-sous-Jouarre. In 1794 he was given the job of itemising and safeguarding the huge number of books and papers that had been confiscated by the revolutionaries on behalf of the Nation. These books, many of which were falling apart due to insects and poor conservation conditions, were also taking up offices that were required by the local authorities. Having constructed proper shelving for the books and introduced air-flow systems to allow ventilation between the shelves, the monumental task of cataloguing the confiscated works remained. This task required the assistance of specialists: archivists, curators, bibliophiles and librarians were called in to sort through the books, destroy any considered "seditious", sell any that were no longer needed and replace any considered important enough in the public libraries. A large of number of public libraries benefitted from this process, in particular the Bibliothèque Nationale. In 1795, Barbier was seconded to Gaspard Michel Leblond with the task of reducing the huge book depots in Paris and in Versailles, sorting, cataloguing and selling the books stored on these sites. Barbier was also heavily involved in the creation of provincial public libraries and the cataloguing of the books stored therein. In 1798, Barbier created the bibliothèque du ministère de l'Intérieur, which was designed to hold the collections that formerly belonged to the Académie Française and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belle-Lettres, as well as any works considered worthwhile that had been seized from libraries belonging to émigrés or those condemned to death. This library became the Conseil D'Etat's library in 1799, shortly after 18 Brumaire, and Barbier became its librarian. Putting together a catalogue for the library, he abandoned the traditional alphabetical classification, instead opting for classification by subject-matter. In 1807, Barbier replaced Louis-Madeleine Ripault and was put in charge of Napoleon's personal libraries at Compiègne, Rambouillet and Trianon as well as the travel libraries that Napoleon took with him whilst on campaign. The first travel library, conceived in July 1808, included texts on a variety of different subjects: novels, history, poetry, and theatre. Barbier was also asked to write numerous reports regarding the history, geography and religious issues of various regions and countries which Napoleon used in his political and military planning. Barbier was also expected to keep the French Emperor constantly supplied with reading material, along with reports, analyses and commentaries regarding each publication. Napoleon, known to be a voracious reader, complained on a number of occasions about the lack of reading material at his disposal, which led to letters being dispatched to Barbier, reminding him of his duties regarding this matter. In his role as "conseiller littéraire", he was also expected to brief Napoleon when the Emperor was back in Paris. He also served the Empress Josephine in a similar manner, and managed her libraries at the Tuileries, Compiègne, Saint-Cloud, Fontainebleau, Trianon, Rambouillet and at her other residences. Between 1808 and 1810, he published his Nouvelle bibliothèque d'un homme de goût, which was based on Louis-Mayeul Chaudon's Bibliothèque d'un homme de goût. This catalogue gathered together various critical and analytical extracts from works and periodicals dedicated to literary criticism, adding to and correcting the original work of Chaudon. The goal of this catalogue was to examine both modern and classical literature and separate the "wheat from the chaff", rewrite any critiques that were unmerited, and ensure that books which did not deserve to be forgotten were not, whilst books that were unworthy of remembrance were removed. The catalogue included entries for both French and foreign literature, as well as offering notes on the best editions and most accurate translations, where necessary. Despite his work for Napoleon, Barbier remained principled and incurred the wrath of the Emperor on a number of occasions: as well as being reluctant to forward any works that he considered mediocre (despite the Emperor's continuous desire for new reading material), he also refused to catalogue a number of books dedicated to or concerning Napoleon and his numerous successes. Works that were omitted from the libraries that Barbier curated included Relation de la bataille de Marengo, Vies de Bonaparte, and Histoires de l'Empereur Napoléon, which he argued were written by "second-rate writers", driven by greed and a desire to flatter the Emperor. Napoleon nevertheless insisted that Relation... be inserted into all of his libraries, despite his librarian's reluctance. During the Restoration, Barbier was put in charge of the royal libraries, but was dismissed from the King's service in 1822, for reasons not listed in his biographies (although Muriel Brot hypothesises that this may have been simply due to his prolonged service for Napoleon). Barbier was severely affected by the dismissal and fell ill shortly afterwards, dying in 1825. Offered here is a Autograph Letter Signed, 1807, one page, approx. 6-1/2 x 9-1/4". Appears to be about Certificate of Pension. We are unable to find any prices for documents signed by Barbier however some of the books he authored have sold at auction for as high as $11,400. 59. [FRANCE] Alphonse-Marie Thomas Bérenger (1785-1866),
known as Thomas Bérenger or Berenger de la Drôme, was a French
lawyer and politician. He was the son of a deputy of the third
estate of Dauphiné to the Constituent Assembly, born in Valence.
He entered the magistracy and became procureur general at
Grenoble, but resigned this office on the Bourbon Restoration.
He then devoted himself mainly to the study of criminal law, and
in 1818 published La justice criminelle en France , in which
with great courage he attacked the special tribunals, provosts'
courts or military commissions which were the main instruments
of the Reaction, and advocated a return to the old common law
and trial by jury . The book had a considerable effect in
discrediting the reactionary policy of the government; but it
was not until 1828, when Bérenger was elected to the chamber,
that he had an opportunity of exercising a personal influence on
affairs as a member of the group known as that of constitutional
opposition. His courage, as well as his moderation, was again
displayed during the revolution of 1830, when, as president of
the parliamentary commission for the trial of the ministers of
Charles X, he braved the fury of the mob and secured a sentence
of imprisonment in place of the death penalty for which they
clamoured. His position in the chamber became one of much
influence, and he had a large share in the modelling of the new
constitution, though his effort to secure a hereditary peerage
failed. Above all he was instrumental in framing the new
criminal code, based on more humanitarian principles, which was
issued in 1835. It was due to him that, in 1832, the right, so
important in actual French practice, was given to juries to find
"extenuating circumstances" in cases when guilt involved the
death penalty. In 1831 he had been made a member of the court of
appeal (cour de cassation}, and the same year was nominated a
member of the Academy of Political and Moral Sciences (Académie
des Sciences Morales et Politiques). He was raised to the
peerage in 1839. This status he lost owing to the revolution of
1848 which ended his career as a politician. As a judge,
however, his activity continued. He was president of the high
courts of Bourges and Versailles in 1849. Having been appointed
president of one of the chambers of the court of appeal, he
devoted himself entirely to judicial work until his retirement,
under the age limit, on 31 May 1860. He now withdrew to his
native town, and occupied himself with his favorite work of
reform of criminal law. In 1833, he had shared in the foundation
of a society for the reclamation of young criminals, in which he
continued to be actively interested to the end. In 1851 and
1852, on the commission of the academy of moral sciences, he had
travelled in France and England for the purpose of examining and
comparing the penal systems in the two countries. The result was
published in 1855 under the title La répression pénale,

In 1804 he published anonymously Familiar Epistles to J. F. Jones, Esquire, on the State of the Irish Stage, a series of caustic criticisms in verse on the management of the Dublin theatres. The book ran through five editions in one year. Equally successful was the Intercepted Letter from Canton (1805), also anonymous, a satire on Dublin society. During this period a rather scathing poem attributed to Croker led to the suicide of actor John Edwin, In 1807 he published a pamphlet on The State of Ireland, Past and Present, in which he advocated Catholic emancipation. 97. [FRANCE] Felix Dupanloup (1802-1878) French ecclesiastic. In 1825 he was ordained priest, and was appointed vicar of the Madeleine at Paris. For a time he was tutor to the Orléans princes. He became the founder of the celebrated academy at St Hyacinthe, and received a letter from Gregory XVI eulogizing his work there, and calling him Apostolus juventutis. He was elected to the Académie française in 1854, occupying the thirty-eighth chair, becoming leader of the Academy’s "religious party", in which capacity he opposed the election of agnostic intellectuals. His imposing height, his noble features, his brilliant eloquence, as well as his renown for zeal and charity, made him a prominent feature in French life for many years. Crowds of persons attended his addresses, on whom his energy, command of language, powerful voice and impassioned gestures made a profound impression. When made bishop of Orléans in 1849, he pronounced a fervid panegyric on Joan of Arc, which attracted attention in England as well as France. Joan of Arc would later be canonized, due partly to Dupanloup's efforts. Before this, he had been sent by Archbishop Aifre to Rome, and had been appointed Roman prelate and protonotary apostolic. For thirty years he remained a notable figure in France, doing his utmost to arouse his countrymen from religious indifference. He was a distinguished educationist who fought for the retention of the Latin classics in the schools and instituted the celebrated catechetical method of St Sulpice. Among his publications are De l'éducation (1850), De la haute éducation intellectuelle (3 vols., 1866), Œuvres choisies (1861, 4 vols.); Histoire de Jésus (1872), a counterblast to Renan's Vie de Jésus. 126. [ART] Winslow
Homer (1836-1910) American landscape
painter and printmaker. He is considered one of the
foremost painters in 19th-century America and a preeminent
figure in American art. Original wood-engraving titled
"WATERMELON-EATERS", published in The American
Art Journal in 1879. Image size is approx. 5-1/8 x
7" plus large margins. The image area is very clean; some
small light spots in margins not close to image [will not
show when matted]. Printed text on verso as usual.
Often Homer's wood-engravings are described as "after
Homer", as are most of the wood-engraved illustations
during those times. The difference between Winslow Homer,
however, the those other artists is that Homer actually
draw on the blocks, which were then cut by craftsmen and
printed. Almost all other artists, except Homer,
never drew on the blocks themselves but would make
the drawing, then someone else would copy the drawing on
the wood block and then someone else would cut the block.
This is why Winslow Homer woodengravings are usually
described as being "By" Homer, not after Homer. You will
see them described both ways today. Winslow
Homer was not only the 19th Century's most popular artist
and illustrator, but he is also considered one of the most
important American artists of all time. The warmth and charm
with which he interpreted the American experience has
enchanted generation after generation. His best known works
have been his water colors and oil paintings; reproductions
of these are commonplace. As popular as
Homer has remained, it was not until the early 1950's that
his work as an illustrator was "rediscovered" on a large
scale. Renewed interest in his illustrations has led to
many Homer exhibitions at such places as Smith and Bowdoin
Colleges and at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. Institutions
have increasingly tried to acquire these rapidly decreasing
treasures. The Metropolitan Museum in New York has a large
collection, as do the fine art museums at Duke University
and Dartmouth as well as the National Gallery in Washington,
D.C. It is not surprising that private collectors are
attempting to increase their holdings of this dwindling
supply. The amusing, fascinating and
profitable thing about collecting Winslow Homer
illustrations is that no one knows exactly what remains.
What could be a more interesting challenge for antique
print collectors, historians, art lovers and
investors!.............200-300

140. [FILM] Norma Zarky (1917-1977)
was a prominent lawyer in Los Angeles, active in the fight for
abortion rights and other civil rights. She then worked for a
number of lawyers, including Joseph L. Rauh, Jr., a prominent
civil rights lawyer, and for Arthur Goldberg. She co-authored
a number of briefs with Rauh on civil rights cases during the
1950s. In 1954, during the McCarthy Era, the Department of
Justice sought to fire Hilbert Zarky from his position with
the Department, based primarily on Norma’s very brief
involvement with Communism when she was an undergraduate in
the mid-1930s, along with such “crimes” as their belonging to
a liberal book club and being at meetings attended by
“suspect” individuals. After she and her husband filed
numerous declarations from friends and prominent individuals
regarding their loyalty to the United States, he was
reinstated to his position. In 1961 joined the law
firm of Mitchell, Silberberg and Knupp, becoming the
firm’s first woman partner in 1968. At Mitchell, Silberberg
and Knupp, she practiced primarily in the field of
entertainment law. Zarky was the first woman to serve as
President of the Beverly Hills Bar Association and was a
founding member of Women in Film. She was influential in
establishing Public Counsel, which is now “the largest
pro bono public interest law firm in the world.” She
also was active in the Constitutional Rights Foundation.
She was also a founder of California Women Lawyers. Zarky was
particularly active in the fight for legalized abortion. She
was “one of the two leading California attorneys” strategizing
the legal battles. She authored the ACLU’s amicus brief in
People v. Belous, in which the California Supreme Court upheld
a woman’s right to abortion. She then wrote an amicus
brief on behalf of the American Association of University
Women in Roe v. Wade, the case that established the right to
abortion on a nationwide basis. In 1979, Women in Film
established The Norma Zarky Humanitarian Award, which “is
presented to individuals who, like Ms. Zarky herself, have
demonstrated enlightened support for the advancement of equal
opportunity for all and devotion to the improvement of the
human condition.” Lengthy TLS, 1965, 1p, to Milt Ebbins,
Chrislaw productions, about Bill Asher, mentioning the film
JOHNNY COOL and The Patty Duke Show. Bill
Asher (1921-2012) was one of the most prolific early
television directors, producing or directing over two dozen
series. With television in its infancy, Asher introduced the
sitcom Our Miss Brooks, which was adapted from a radio show.
He began directing I Love Lucy by 1952. In 1964, he produced
and directed Bewitched, which starred his then-wife Elizabeth
Montgomery. As a result of his early success, Asher was
considered an "early wunderkind of TV-land," and is
credited in one magazine article for 'inventing' the
sitcom. Included here is a carbon copy of another letter
plus a copy of a contract with William Asher.

American-born British sculptor who helped pioneer modern

controversial works which challenged taboos on what was
appropriate subject matter for public artworks. His art is
displayed all over the world; highly original for its time, its
influence on the younger generation of sculptors such as Henry
Moore and Barbara Hepworth was significant. According to June
Rose, in her biography, Moore was befriended by the older
sculptor during the early 1920s and visited Epstein in his
studio. Epstein, along with Moore and Hepworth, all expressed a

One of America's Earliest Western Singing Groups
201. [MUSIC] The Sons of the Pioneers are one of America's earliest Western singing groups whose classic recordings set a new standard for performers of Western music. Known for the high quality of their vocal performances, musicianship, and songwriting, they produced finely-crafted and innovative recordings that have inspired many Western music performers and remained popular through the years. Since 1933, through many changes in membership, the Sons of the Pioneers have remained one of the longest-surviving country music vocal groups in history. Between 1935 and 1984, the Sons of the Pioneers appeared in 87 films, several movie shorts, and a television series. In 1937, the Sons Of The Pioneers signed a deal with Columbia Pictures to appear in a number of movies. In 1938, Leonard Slye was offered a contract as an actor with rival Republic Pictures. Part of that deal required him to officially leave the group. Leonard Slye changed his name to Roy Rogers, and went on to achieve major success as a singing cowboy in the movies. Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers still remained close throughout the coming years. When their contract with Columbia Pictures ended, they signed a new contract with Republic Pictures to be with Roy. They were soon appearing as highly popular supporting players in many of Roy Rogers' movies. Rare Signed vintage vintage 8x10 photograph. SIGNED on the front by Pat Brady & Hugh Farr. 218. [FRANCE] Jean Soanen (1647–1740) French Oratorian and bishop of Senez. He was a convinced Jansenist. In opposition to the papal bull Unigenitus, he with Charles-Joachim Colbert, bishop of Montpellier, Pierre de la Broue who was bishop of Mirepoix, and Pierre de Langle who was bishop of Boulogne, appealed against it in 1717 to a general council. This group and their followers were known as Appellants; the council was though entirely hypothetical as an idea. Later, he sent out a pastoral letter to his congregation, urging the reading of Pasquier Quesnel. Pierre Guérin de Tencin, the archbishop of Embrun, then in 1727 had him exiled from his diocese. But Jean Soanen of Senez, a small mountain diocese in Provence, issued in 1726 a Pastoral instruction to his diocese, in which, at the age of 80, he reviewed his whole position in the controversy. He regretted that he had ever signed the Formulary of 1665, withdrew his adhesion to the Bull "Vineam Domini Sabaoth", blamed himself for prohibiting, against his real convictions, the moral Reflexions, and promised never to accept the Unigenitus. Soanen was deprived of his see by the Provincial Synoid of Embrun, which on carious canonical grounds he refused to recognize, and was banished to the abbey of Chaise Dieu in Auvergne, where he remained imprisoned till his death in 1740, at the age of 95. 235. WILLIAM WHITTY HALL (1810-1876) physician and pioneer editor of health magazines, was born in Paris, Kentucky. After graduating from Centre College, Danville, Kentucky, with the intention of becoming a Presbyterian missionary, he studied theology and medicine at Transylvania University, where he received an M.D. in 1836, the same year he was ordained to the ministry. Intending to support himself as a missionary through his medical practice, he began work in Louisiana. But he subsequently came to Texas, met Sam Houston near Nacogdoches, and rode with him to the first presidential inauguration in Texas. Hall preached in Houston and the surrounding area and served as chaplain in both houses of the Texas Congress. He helped collect funds to build a Presbyterian church in Houston and was active in organizing an ecclesiastical vigilance committee to prevent imposters from posing as ministers. In 1837 Hall left the Republic in time to attend the Synod of Kentucky, which convened in October. There he urged the Presbvterian Church to become involved in missionary work in Texas. The General Assembly of the church adopted his recommendation in 1838. Hall gradually abandoned preaching for the practice of medicine and went first to New Orleans, then to Cincinnati, where he married Hannah Matlock. In 1851 he established a consultation practice in New York City, where he married Magdalene Matilda Robertson. While in Cincinnati, he had published several books on consumption and other lung ailments. In New York in 1854 he began the publication of Hall's Joumal of Health. In 1875 he started another periodical, Hall's Medical Adviser. 267. [NOBEL PRIZE] EDWARD B. LEWIS (1918- ) American developmental geneticist who, along with geneticists Christiane Nusslein-Volhard and Eric F. Wieschaus, was awarded the 1995 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for discovering the functions that control early embryonic development. Lewis based his research on studies of the fruit fly, or vinegar fly (Drosophila melanogaster), a popular species for genetic experiments. By crossbreeding thousands of flies he was able to establish that genes are generally arranged on the chromosome in the same order as their corresponding body segments--e.g., the first set of genes controls the head and thorax; the middle set, the abdomen; and the final set, posterior parts. This orderliness is known as the colinearity principle. Lewis also found that genetic regulatory functions may overlap. For example, a fly with an extra set of wings has a defective gene not in the abdominal region but in the thoracic region, which normally functions as a regulator of such mutations SIGNED/inscribed 4x8 photograph in his laboratory with Signed envelope..............40-60
268. [MAINE] Ralph Owen Brewster (1888 - 1961) was an American politician from Maine. Brewster, a Republican, was solidly conservative, a close confidant of Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin and antagonist of Howard Hughes. Brewster came to national attention due to his opposition to the commercial interests of Howard Hughes , America's wealthiest man at the time. Brewster was chairman of a special Senate committee investigating defense procurement during World War II. He claimed concern that Hughes had received $40 million from the Defense Department without actually delivering the aircraft he had contracted to provide, but Brewster may have had an ulterior motive. Incidentally, Hughes stated that the H-4 Hercules cost far more, with the balance coming from his own funds. Hughes aggressively combated the inquirer, alleging corruption. Memoirs by Hughes right-hand man Noah Dietrich and syndicated newspaper columnist Jack Anderson each sketched Brewster as, in Dietrich's words, "an errand boy for Juan Trippe and Pan American World Airways," who pushed for legislation that would give Pan Am the single-carrier international air monopoly for the U.S. The Martin Scorsese movie The Aviator portrays Brewster (played by Alan Alda) similarly, as corrupt and in the pocket of Pan Am, the rival of Hughes' TWA . Hughes spread rumors about Brewster's close association with Pan Am, alleging that he received free flights and hospitality in return for legislation such as his bill to withdraw government approval for TWA flights across the Atlantic. In 1841, Evans resigned from the House to take a seat in the United States Senate from Maine. He served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Manufactures from 1841 to 1843, chairman of the Committee on Finance from 1841 to 1845 and chairman of the committee on territories from 1845 to 1847. Evans served in the Senate until 1847 when he was defeated in an attempt to be reelected to a second term. Evans then practiced law in Portland, Maine and continued to be involved in politics. upper-middle-class family; the other six all died in infancy.
Gibbon himself was a sickly child and had almost no formal
schooling. He was, however, an avid and omnivorous reader. By
the time he was approaching age 15, his health suddenly
improved, and his father entered him in Magdalen College,
University of Oxford, for what he later called in his Memoirs
"the most idle and unprofitable 14 months of my life." Study of
early Christianity led him to embrace Roman Catholicism in June
1753, thus barring him from the university. His father swiftly
packed him off to Lausanne, Switzerland, in care of a Calvinist

Protestantism. (The Memoirs termed it acquiescence.) ENGRAVED

309. [ART] Leonard Volk (1828-1895) American sculptor. Most famous for making a life mask of American President Abraham Lincoln. In the early part of spring in 1860, during Abraham Lincoln's visit to Chicago, Volk asked him to sit for a bust. When Lincoln agreed, the artist decided to start by doing a life mask. Lincoln found the process of letting wet plaster dry on his face, followed by a skin-stretching removal process, "anything but agreeable." But he endured it with good humor, and when he saw the final bust, he was quite pleased, declaring it "the animal himself." Volk later used the life mask and bust of 1860 as the basis for other editions, including a full-length statue of Lincoln. In 1848 he opened a studio at St Louis, Missouri, and in 1855 was sent by his wife's cousin, politician Stephen A. Douglas, to Rome to study. Returning to America in 1857, he settled in Chicago, where he helped to establish an Academy of Design and was for eight years its head. Among his principal works: the Douglas monument at Chicago, Illinois; AND statues of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas in the Illinois State Capitol at Springfield, Illinois. Offered here are 22 signed bank checks by Leonard Volk, 1893-1895. These were culled from Leonard Volk's checks because they're in less perfect condition. One is separated & held together with pin; others may have a somewhat smudged area of his signature; cancel stamp competes with signature; stained etc. A DEALER HAS A LEONARD VOLK signed card listed on ebay at $699. 310. [MUSIC] Louis-Charles-Bonaventure-Alfred
Bruneau (1857–1934) French composer who
played a key role in the introduction of realism in French
opera. In his youth, Bruneau studied the cello at the Paris
Conservatory, and played in the Pasdeloup orchestra. He soon
began to compose, writing a cantata, Genevieve de Paris while
still a young man. In 1884 his Ouverture heroique was
performed, followed by the choral symphonies, Léda (1884), La
belle au bois dormant (1886). In 1887, he produced his
first opera, Kérim. The following year, Bruneau met Émile Zola,
launching a collaboration between the two men that would last
for two decades. Bruneau's 1891 opera Le rêve was based on the
Zola story of the same name, and in the coming years Zola
would provide the subject matter for many of Bruneau's works,
including L'attaque du moulin (1893). Zola himself wrote the
libretti for the operas Messidor (1897) and L'Ouragan (1901).
Other works influenced by Zola include L'enfant roi (1905),
Naïs Micoulin (1907), Les quatres journées (1916), and Lazare
(produced posthumously in 1954). Other operatic works by
Bruneau contained themes by Hans Christian Andersen (Le jardin
du Paris in 1923) and Victor Hugo (Angelo, tyran de Padoue in
1928). Bruneau's orchestral works show the influence of
Wagner. His other works include his Requiem (1896) and two

Frank Beard (1842-1905)
grew to become a widely known American illustrator,
"chalk talk" artist, and cartoonist in the late 19th
century. In early 1850s, Beard was a boy of 7
or 8 years old when he first saw Yankee Notions,
which he later termed "the first American comic
journal," published by T.W. Strong in New York City
USA. His favorite was Brother Jonathan published by
Wilson & Company in New York City. He and his
brothers would "spread the pages on the floor and
lie on our stomachs, studying the pictures and
spelling out the titles and jokes beneath them, for
hours together." Beard's first published work as an
illustrator may have appeared in Comic Monthly,
published from 1859 to 1881. His cartoons also
appeared in Judge. Beard drew both single panel
cartoons and sequential art (comics). Around 1893 he
began illustrating for The Ram's Horn, a
non-denominational Christian periodical published
during the 1890s and early 1900s by Frederick L.
Chapman & Company in Chicago, Illinois USA. The
magazine warned of the growing dangers of secularism
in American society which were becoming more evident
at that time. Eventually Beard became the magazine's
principal illustrator, drawing both covers and
interior illustrations. It is reported that, at some
point in his career, Beard vowed to no longer do any
cartoons which weren't aimed at spreading
Christianity. Some of The Ram's Horn material was
gathered together into a book called Fifty Great
Cartoons(1899), published by the magazine for its
subscribers. A full color edition of Beard's
artwork, entitled One Hundred Sermon Pictures, was
published in 1902. Frank's brother was Daniel
Carter Beard [1850-1941] American illustrator,
author, youth leader, and social reformer who
founded the Sons of Daniel Boone in 1905, which
Beard later merged with the Boy Scouts of America
(BSA). Offered here is an original ink drawing,

de Lamoignon - Nicolas Lamoignon-Bâville (1648-1724) was a
French official said to have been accused by
Voltaire of instigating the revocation of the
Edict of Nantes. He made himself famous by the
measures he adopted against the Protestants, and
by the manner in which he associated himself
with the religious policy of Louvois, of which
the revocation of the Edict of Nantes was the
culminating point. But it is without proof that
Voltaire accused him of having instigated this
revocation. "I never counselled the revocation
of the Edict of Nantes", he wrote to his brother
in 1708. On the contrary he considered that "in
religion hearts must be attacked, for it is
there that it resides", and immediately after
the revocation he sent for Bourdaloue to come
and evangelize the Protestants of Montpellier.
From 1702 to 1704 he helped in the repression of
the uprising of the Camisards, occasioned in the
Cevennes by English and Calvinistic influences. Document Signed, 1710, 3pp+, 7-1/4 x 9-3/4". Supposed to be

(1851- 1936) French painter of military subjects who
specialized in the scenes of the Vendee Wars of 1793–1799

came from a family from the Bas-Poitou, part of the old
province of Poitou, Le Blant was descended from the French
"Blancs" who had opposed the French Revolution and was thus
in sympathy with those who rose up and formed the Grand
Catholic Army of the Vendee and he spent his artistic career
commemorating the events of the rebellion in large works
that were exhibited in the annual Paris Salon. Le
Blant was a much honored painter and he won a Bronze Medal

364. [ART] FREDERICK S. CHURCH
(1842-1924) American artist, working mainly as an illustrator
and especially known for his (often allegorical) depiction of
animals. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His father was
an important figure in politics as well as a well-known
lawyer. At the age of 13 he left school and took a job at the
then newly-established American Express Company in Chicago,
with his parents intending him to have a business career.
Being nineteen at the outbreak of the Civil War he served in
the Union Army. After his discharge he returned to Chicago,
having decided to devote his life to art, and started studying
drawing under Walter Shirlaw at the city's Academy of Design.
In 1870 he decided to continue his studies in New York City,
which became his home for the rest of his life. He enrolled at
the National Academy of Design, where he was taught by Lemuel
Wilmarth. He joined the Art Students League, headed by his old
teacher Walter Shirlaw, in which he remained involved for the
rest of his life. By the middle of the 1870s he was already
gaining a name as a gifted illustrator. Among the many
magazines and periodicals which eventually took up his works
were the various Harper's publications (Harper's Bazaar,
Harper's Weekly, and Harper's Young People), as well as Frank
Leslie's Weekly, Century Magazine and the Ladies' Home
Journal. His career was helped along by several devoted
patrons, among them William T. Evans, John Gellatly, the
banker Grant B. Schley, and the railroad-car manufacturer
Charles Lang Freer, the founder of Washington, D.C.'s Freer
Gallery. His work on the Fables of Aesop , including an
illustration of the human and animal protagonists of each
fable plus an elaborate cover for the whole, is considered
among the best of his works. Some of Church's works are kept
in the Permanent Collection of the Fulton Decorative Arts
Gallery at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in
Hagerstown, Maryland. Others are at the collection of Dale and
Rosie Horst of Newton, Kansas, which lent them to the Fulton
Gallery in 2003, for an extensive exhibition including both
Church's original drawings and the magazines and periodicals
in which they appeared. Original etching, "The Wanderer's

375. Henry Villard (1835-1900)
American journalist and financier who was an early president of
the Northern Pacific Railway. Born and raised Ferdinand Heinrich
Gustav Hilgard in the Rhenish Palatinate of the Kingdom of
Bavaria, Villard clashed with his more conservative father over
politics, and was sent to a semi-military academy in
northeastern France. He emigrated to the U.S.A., without his
parents' knowledge, as a teenager. He changed his name to avoid
being sent back to Europe, and began making his way west,
briefly studying law as he developed a career in journalism. He
supported John C. Frémont of the newly established Republican
Party in his presidential campaign in 1856, and later followed
Abraham Lincoln's 1860 campaign. Villard became a war
correspondent, first covering the American Civil War, and later
being sent by the Chicago Tribune to cover the Austro-Prussian
War. He became a pacifist as a result of his experiences
covering the Civil War. In the late 1860s he married women's
suffrage advocate Helen Frances Garrison, and returned to the
U.S., only to go back to Germany for his health in 1870. While
in Germany, Villard became involved in investments in American
railroads, and returned to the U.S. in 1874 to oversee German
investments in the Oregon and California Railroad. He visited
Oregon that summer, and being impressed with the region's
natural resources, began acquiring various transportation
interests in the region. During the ensuing decade he acquired
several rail and steamship companies, and pursued a rail line
from Portland to the Pacific Ocean; he was successful, but the
line cost more than anticipated, causing financial turmoil.
Villard returned to Europe, helping German investors acquire
stakes in the transportation network, and returned to New York
in 1886. Also in the 1880s, Villard acquired the New York
Evening Post and The Nation, and established the predecessor of
General Electric. He was the first benefactor of the University

He was later appointed Master of the Queen's Household, and then Receiver-General of the Duchy of Cornwall. In 1867 he was appointed Keeper of the Queen's Privy Purse. Sir Thomas had enjoyed the Queen's trust and confidence for 27 years, but there had been one occasion when he had threatened to resign, because of rows with John Brown, the Queen's personal gillie and favourite. It is on record that the Queen made gentle fun of Sir Thomas behind his back: with roars of laughter she told Sir Henry Ponsonby how shocked Sir Thomas had been by the design for a medal of the Ashanti campaign and she quoted his comment, "Roman soldiers with nothing - nothing at all - but helmets on." [GREAT EASTERN] John Scott Russell 1808-1882) Scottish naval engineer who built the Great Eastern in collaboration with Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and made the discovery that gave birth to the modern study of solitons. Russell's experiments and observations led him to propose a new system of shaping vessels, known as the wave system, which was to culminate in the building of the SS Great Eastern. He was held in high regard by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who made him a partner in his project to build the Great Eastern. At its time, this was to be the largest moveable object man had ever created. The Great Eastern was eventually launched in 1858, having been designed according to Russell's wave system. Russell was also one of the earliest and most active people advocating ironclad men-of-war, and was the joint designer of the first armoured frigate, HMS Warrior. See Iddings above393. [ENGLAND] Charles Townshend, Second Viscount, (born 1674, died 1738) a statesman. document signed, JUNE 17, 1710, APPROX. 9 X 3-1/2 in. Payment order for 1,000 pounds. Fine condition. Charles Townshend, Second Viscount, (born 1674, died 1738) a statesman of unsulliintegrity, was the eldest son of Horatio, the first Viscount. He succeeded to the Peerage in December 1687, being educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. When he took his seat in the House of Lords his sympathies leant to Toryism, but this predilection soon faded away, and in February 1701 it was rumoured among the courtiers that he would hold office of Privy Soal in the Whig Ministry which William the Third had in view. For some years after the accession of Queen Anne he remained without office, but on September 29th 1707 he was created Yeomen of the Guard, and in the same year he was summoned to the Privy Council, a distinction renewed by the queen's two successors to the throne. The command og the Yeomen remained in his hands until June 13th 1711, but its responsibilities did not prevent him from acting as joint plent- potentiary with the Duke of Marlborough in the peace negotiations with France which were carried on at Gertruydenburg, near Breda, o from serving as ambassador extraordinary at the Hague Congress (May 2, 1709 to March 26, 1711). Townshend was in high favour of George the First and on that king's arrival at the Hague in September 1714 he published the appointment of Charles as Secretary of State for the Southern Department, entrusting to his new minister the privilege of nominating his own colleague: Horace Walpole (??? Robert Walpole ), his brother-in-law and private secretary recommended Stanhope for the vacant post, and Stanhope was duly appointed. Townshend did not neglect to avail himself of the advantages afforded by his attendance on the king, and before he arrival of George the First in England he had obtained complete ascendency both over his mind and the dispositions of the advisors by whom his line of conduct was usually determined. The policy of the new ministers, both at home and abroad, lay in the promotion of peace. With this object they endeavoured to limit the charges against their predecessor Harley, Lord Oxford, to high crimes and misdemeanours. To gain this and they brought about, in 1716, an alliance between those ancient rivals in arms, France and England. In spite of their success their influence was gradually undermined by the intrigues of Lord Sunderland and by the discontent of the Hanoverian favourites, who deemed the pensions and the places which they had gained as insufficient reward for their exertions. In October, 1716 Stanhope accompanied the King on a journey to Hanover, and during this visit was seduced from his allegiance to his colleague by the wily Sunderland, who had ingratiated himself into royal favour. George the First was induced into believing that Townshend and Walpole were caballing with the prince of Wales, and were forming designs against the royal authority. Townshend was dismissed in December 1716 from his place of Secretary of State, and was afforded in lieu thereof the splendid banishment of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a gilded sinecure which he at first contemptuously declined, but finally condescended ultimately to accept on condition that he was not required to set foot on Irish soil. His latent spirit of hostility to this arrangement quickly developed into open antagonism, and in March 1717 he was dismissed from this position. At the close of May 1720, a partial reconciliation took place between the opposing Whig sections of Stanhope and Townshend. The Latter was readmitted into the Ministry as Lord President of the Council on 11th June 1720, and his devoted colleague, Sir Robert Walpole, became Paymaster General. When the South Sea Bubble burst, the fortunes of the Ministry shared in the misfortunes of the scheme which they had promoted. Stanhope, in a paroxysm of passion during a heated debate broke a blood vessel, and Sunderland, although acquitted of the charge of personal corruption, was forced to retire into private life. The withdrawal of these statesmen assigned to their rivals the chief positions in the state. Townshend became Secretary of State on the 10th February 1721, and Walpole gained the position of First Lord of the Treasury and Chancellor of the Exchequer. The death of George the First threatened a change of advisors, but the dismay of the new king's favourite, Spencer Compton, at being called upon to draw up the royal speech led to the old ministers of the Crown being retained in their places. What the attack on the opposition could not affect, the internal strife of the administration accomplished. Townshend was of a proud, impetuous nature, born more accustomed to rule than obey. His family had for many generations stood higher in the social life of Norfolk than Walpole's progenitors, and when he himself attained the distinction in politics his position as a member of the Upper House was greater than that enjoyed by his friend in the Commons. As the power of the Lower House increased, and as Walpole became more and more the object of attacks by the Tories, the pre-eminence of Townshend passed from him. So long, to use the witty remark of Sir Robert Walpole, as the firm of Townshend and Walpole was such, things went well with them, [Lady Dorothy Walpole 1686-1726] but when the positions were reversed jealousies arose between the partners. The growing alienation was hastened by the death in 1725 of the Secretary's wife, Walpole's sister. At the close of 1729 Townshend endeavoured to obtain the appointment of his old and attached friend, Lord Chesterfield, as his fellow secretary of state, and the failure of the attempt brought about a fierce scene between himself and Walpole. They broke into passionate words, seized one another by the coat collars, and would have come to blows had their friends not intervened. After the outbreak of passion further co-operation was impossible and Townshend had the good sense to recognise the position. He retired tp private life on 15th May 1730. The Chief domestic events of Townshend's ministry were the impeachment of Bishop Atterbury; the partial restoration of Lord Bolingbroke; and the troubles in Ireland over the granting to a man named Wood of a patent for coining pence. Its concluding act was the signing of the Treaty of Seville on November 9th 1729. Charles Townshend died of apoplexy on 21st June 1738, aged 64. Slow in forming, but resolute in adhering to, his opinion, and like so many many men of that stamp, he was impatient of contradiction. His manners have been styled "course, rustic, and seemingly brutal" but these defects were not visible in his domestic life. Never did minister leave office with cleaner hands. He did not add one acre to his estate, nor leave large fortunes to his younger children.............80-120
