4.
[ART] Ben Nicholson,
OM (1894-1982) was a British painter of abstract compositions.
His first notable work was following a meeting with the
playwright J. M. Barrie on holiday in Rustington, Sussex, in
1904. As a result of this meeting, Barrie used a drawing by
Nicholson as the base for a poster for the play Peter Pan;
his father William designed some of the sets and costumes.
In London, Nicholson met the sculptors Barbara Hepworth (to whom
he was married from 1938 to 1951) and Henry Moore. On visits to
Paris he met Mondrian, whose work in the neoplastic style was to
influence him in an abstract direction, and Picasso, whose
cubism would also find its way into his work. His gift, however,
was the ability to incorporate these European trends into a new
style that was recognizably his own. He first visited St Ives,
Cornwall, in 1928 with his fellow painter Christopher Wood,
where he met the fisherman and painter, Alfred Wallis. In Paris
in 1933 he made his first wood relief, White Relief, which
contained only right angles and circles. In 1937 he was one of
the editors of Circle, an influential monograph on
constructivism. A retrospective exhibition of his work was shown
at the Tate Gallery in London in 1955. Offered here is an
EXTREMELY RARE etching from the 1960 portfolio 21 ETCHINGS
and POEMS. This etching project, possibly the first of its
kind in the United States, joined two creative
disciplines–art and poetry. Poets and artists invited for this
historic collaboration worked in the almost forgotten tradition
of the Book of Kells and William Blake’s Illuminated poems. Each
print closely integrates text and image, including a poem
written in the hand of its author and imagery created through a
wide range of innovative print techniques by an artist. For the
poets who transferred their poems, in their own handwriting,
onto the copper plate, this was an arduous, but exhilarating
experience; a slip of tool meant beginning anew as they wrote
backwards from a mirror image. Ben Nicholson's etching
appears on the same plate as the poem by Sir Herbert Read.
Published in a signed edition of 50 plus 12 artist proofs.
Some of the artists who participated were Pierre Alechinsky,
Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Jacques Lipchitz, Ben Nicholson,
I. Rice Pereira etc. Some of the poets were William Carlos
Williams, Dylan Thomas, Frank O'Hara, Thomas Merton, Peter
Viereck, Theodore Roethke etc. This particular print
from this project is a proof original etching, never signed or
numbered. Initiated by artist Peter Grippe, director of
the renowned Atelier 17 print workshop, and the result of
nearly ten years of effort, 21 Etchings and Poems is not
only a landmark of mid-20th century American print
publishing, but is unique in its inclusion of writers and
artists from across the spectrum of 1950s cultural
production." The etchings were published by The
Anderson-Lamb Printing Company. This etching "proof" comes from Anderson-Lamb
and was never used. To the best of our knowledge it is
the only unsigned etching from this project that survived
unsigned. Plate size of Nicholson etching is approx. 5-1/2 x 7
in., poem plate size is about 6 x 6.5 in., paper size
about 19-3/4 x 17 in. Printed on thick paper. Condition
of printed area is very good. Well away from images
there are a few age spots. This has been in storage for
many years. Extremely RARE!.............600-800

19. [FRANCE] Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse (1681), duc de Penthièvre (1697), (1711), (1678-1737), a legitimated prince of the blood royal, was the son of Louis XIV and of his mistress Françoise-Athénaïs, marquise de Montespan. At the age of five, he became grand admiral of France. In 1693, he became a chevalier des Ordres du roi (Order of the King) and, in 1704, a knight of the Toison d’or. Shortly before his death in 1715, Louis XIV added a codicil to his will stating that if all legitimate members of the House of Bourbon, both those descended from Louis and more distant kinsmen, died out, the throne of France could be inherited by the duc du Maine and the comte de Toulouse. The decision was reversed after the death of Louis XIV when Louis Alexandre's cousin, Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, as the new regent, had the Parlement de Paris void that portion of the will. The comte de Toulouse died at the Château de Rambouillet on 1 December 1737. He was buried in the village 12th century Saint-Lubin church. 20. [CIVIL WAR] Eugene
B. Payne (1835-1910). Two page letter
written in pencil, Illinois Legislature, House of
Representative, Springfield, Illinois, 1867. This is
Payne’s own retained copy of his letter to J.F. Farnsworth,
congressman from Illinois and Union general. Payne
is expressing regret that a Dr. [Moses] Evans was
recommended as Post Master of Waukengan, Illinois.
Payne recommends, instead, a Major. Clarkson. Says that
the railroad men want him in the post; says he is a rich man
and does not need the office. Says Clarkson needs
the job. According to the New York Times, April 8, 1910, Payne
was born in Seneca Falls, N.Y. on April 15, 1835. But in
1836 his family, led by his father, Thomas Hubbard Payne,
bought land in northwest Fremont Township, Lake County
Illinois. The large Payne family played crucial political and
economic roles in the development of Lake County, as described
in John J. Halsey’s 1912 History of Lake County, Illinois
(Waukegan, 1912, 432-51). As the son of a pioneer family,
Payne studied in local schools and graduated from the Waukegan
High School (Open Library undocumented online article on
General Payne). In 1860 he was graduated from the law
school of Northwestern University, a member of the first
class, and was “admitted to the bar that same year,” according
to the Times obituary. At the beginning of the Civil War
he organized at Waukegan, Illinois, the first company of Union
infantry troops in Illinois (37th Illinois Infantry Regiment)
and he served with them until September of 1864 when he was
discharged due to his dibilitating malaria (background note,
Payne collection, Clements Library, U. of Michigan). That fall
of 1864 he was elected to the Illinois state
legislature. Payne was wounded and ill following
his participation in the July 1863 Vicksburg campaign and
victory. His service after the spring of 1862 is
documented in the Payne collection at the Clements Library, U.
of Michigan. The background note for that collection
states that Payne thought that the December 1862 Prairie Grove
battle as equally significant to that at Pea Ridge. By
the end of the war, and after playing a role in an important
Rio Grande campaign and returning in early 1864 to Illinois to
recruit, he was mustered out in September 1864 at the rank of
Brigadier General. He was the first soldier from Lake
County, Illinois to achieve the rank of general. After
the war he served in the legislature to 1868, on the
Republican ticket. The Times obituary says that he
practiced law for seventeen years. The Open Library article
reports that he lived and practiced in Waukegan and in
Evanston, Illinois to 1887. In 1885 A.T. Andreas in his
History of Chicago, v. 1, 203, lists Payne as a resident of
Chicago, “among respected and beloved citizens” who fought
with the 37th Regiment. Late in life, after retiring
from the bar, Payne “was made an officer of the U.S. Pension
Bureau,” Washington, DC, according to the Times
obituary.............80-120

21. [ART] Richard Carline (1896-1980 ) Painter,
writer and administrator, Carline was born in Oxford.
His father, George Carline, his mother, Anne, and
brother Sydney, his sister Hilda (Mrs Stanley Spencer)
and his wife, Nancy, were all painters. Carline in 1913
attended Percyval Tudor-Hart's Academie de Peinture, in
Paris. After a short period teaching, Carline served in
World War I and was appointed an Official War Artist.
With his brother he became noted for war pictures from
the air. He was elected LG in 1920, at which time the
Carlines' Hampstead home became a centre for artists
such as Henry Lamb, John Nash and Mark Gertler. During
this period Carline was clearly influenced by Stanley
Spencer, transforming everyday scenes into something
monumental. Carline achieved this, however, without
exaggerating form or gestures to the degree that Spencer
did. Between 1924 and 1929 Carline taught at the Ruskin
School of Drawing, Oxford. He had his first solo show at
Goupil Gallery in 1931. The mid-1930s saw Carline
involved in Negro art, organising a show at Adams
Gallery in 1935, and contributing the main text to Arts
of West Africa, edited by Michael Sadler. During World
War II Carline supervised camouflage of factories and
airfields. He was involved in AIA, helping to found the
Hampstead Artists' Council in 1944. In 1946-47 he was
appointed as the first Art Counsellor to UNESCO, and
from 1955 to 1974 was chief examiner in art for the
Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. His books
include Pictures in the Post: the Story of the Picture
Postcard, 1959; Draw They Must, 1968; and Stanley
Spencer at War, 1978. In 1975 the D'Offay Gallery held a Richard
Carline exhibition for which the artist wrote the
foreword. Carline died in Hampstead and in 1983 Camden
Arts Centre organised a memorial exhibition. The Imperial
War Museum holds his work, including the outstanding and
pioneering series of paintings, from World War I, based on
observations made from aeroplanes. Offered here is a
lengthy ALS, 1970, written to the artist, Dr.
Frederick Solomon (1899-1980)
German Expressionist artist who died in New
Hampshire USA. Solomon won the Mowbray Prize [1944] in
London; was listed in WHO'S WHO IN ART [1954 London
edition]. He studied art with such famous German
artist's as: Max Liebermann, Martin Brandenburg,
Eugene Spiro & Willy Jaeckel [Masterclass].
Exhibitions: Berlin, Cologne, Capetown, Haifa,
London [Royal Academy], U.S., and in 1958 had
one-man show at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in
Havana, Cuba. In 1956 several of his paintings were
exhibited at the Butler Institute of American Art,
Youngstown, Ohio. The letter shows that Carline and
Solomon were longtime friends. Fine condition.

22. [ART] ALBERT STERNER (1863-1946) Noted American artist. OFFERED HERE: ORIGINAL charcoal drawing unsigned, image size approx. 9-1/2 x 8 in. plus margins. The image is in very good condition. STERNER'S influence is seen in the works of both Rockwell Kent and George Bellows who he introduced to the technique of lithography and put in touch with master printer/artist Bolton Brown. In 1915, Sterner rallied a group of printmakers together to raise the general quality of American prints. The founders of the Painter-Gravers of America included, along with Sterner, Childe Hassam, Bellows, & George Elmer Brown. He became a member of the National Academy, won a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition of 1900; gold medal at Munich in 1905, a bronze at Buffalo Exposition in 1901, and Carnegie Prize in 1941. He was President of Soc. of Illustrators, 1907-09. Sterner concentrated increasingly on portraits of famous people, for which ultimately he was to become best known. His personality, wit, charm, erudition, and talent endeared him to many of his famous patrons. His opinions - definite and energetically stated - were such that he took no nonsense from sitters, which included the nobility and gentry of three generations, among them, the Vanderbilts, Whitneys, Reids, Wideners, Armours, and members of the royal family of Siam. 27. [RADIO] Amos n' Andy -

1926-1958. Photograph inscribed and signed:
"To/Mrs. F.B. Prentice/Sincerely/'Amos 'n' Andy.
Amos FREEMAN F. GOSDEN and "'Andy'"
CHARLES J. CORRELL. Amos n' Andy, originally
titled Sam n' Henry, debuted on Chicago's WGN on January
12, 1926. The show switched over to WMAQ on March 19,
1928. Although the title characters were played by white
men, the storyline was about two Atlanta Black men who
came to Chicago to find their fortunes. They were
members of the Mystic Knights of the Sea Lodge instead
of the Jewels of the Crown. Everything else remained the
same. Amos n' Andy premiered on the NBC radio network on
Thursday night, August 19, 1929 at 11:00 P.M. EST. The
show was broadcast an unprecedented six days a week. It
was so popular that it was moved to 7:00 P.M. EST to
reach a broader audience. There were protests on the
west coast because it would be aired there at 4 P.M. so,
for the first time in radio history, NBC did a repeat
broadcast for its west coast affiliates. Amos n' Andy
hit its peak of popularity in the 1930s, but the show
remained on radio until 1958. Lightly soiled at margins.
Mounting remnants and copyright stamp on verso (no show
through). Overall, very good condition. We have done a
great deal of research on this photo, trying to
determine who actually signed, one of both. We can
say that the handwriting on this photo matches those of
the same period, whether on photos or album pages.
Since no one ever said otherwise, it is assumed that
Gosden signed Amos and Charles signed

de Montazet (1713 - 1788)
French theologian, of Jansenist tendencies, who became
bishop of Autun and archbishop of Lyon. He was elected
to the Académie française in 1756, but did not produce
significant literary works. He had published for
his seminary by the Oratorian Joseph Valla, six volumes
of "Institutiones theologicæ". These were known as
"Théologie de Lyon", and were spread throughout Italy by
Scipio de’ Ricci, bishop of Pistoia and Prato, until
condemned by the Index in 1792. Contrary to the papal
bull of Pope Pius V on the Breviary, Montazet changed
the text of the Breviary and the Missal. The later
efforts of Pope Pius IX and Cardinal Bonald to suppress
the innovations of Montazet provoked resistance on the
part of the canons, who defended the traditional
Lyonnese ceremonies. Document Signed, 1759, written

was the penultimate cardinal-nephew. Despite Pius VI's lineage
to a noble Cesena family, his only sister had married a man

genealogist to discover (and inflate) some trace of nobility
in the Onesti lineage, an endeavor which yielded only a
circuitous connection to Saint Romualdo. Nephew of Pius
VI, son of Marquis Honest di Cesena, was adopted, with his
brother Louis, who lacked family Braschi male succession.
Created Cardinal in 1781, was Grand prior of the order of

38. [ART] Christian Haldenwang (German, 1770-1831) one of the finest German landscape engravers of the early 19th Century. His main works includes the cycle of the "Four Seasons" after Claude Lorrains paintings in the collection of the Ermitage Leningrad. He born at Durlach in 1770, was articled to Christian von Mechel, an engraver and dealer in art goods at Basle. He lived five years in this establishment, destitute of every means that could promote his education as an artist; for it was rather a factory than a school of art. The examples set before him were only French engravings. He, however, was able to see some of Middiman's ' Select Views in Great Britain,' and others by Woollett, which were probably presents from those artists to Mechel. Seeing these prints excited Haldenwang creating a desire to imitate them, and he determined to make Woollett his model. During the latter part of his time he made some attempts at aquatint, which, though injurious to his health, had beneficial results; for some well-executed works of this class obtained the notice of the Chalcographic Society, and he went to Dessau in 1796, where he remained for eight years, producing many beautiful landscapes, and improving his skill in that style of engraving. The reputation he acquired induced the Margrave Charles Frederick of Baden to appoint him engraver to the court of Carlsruhe, but during the time the French had the ascendancy in Germany, he was obliged to work for the booksellers. It was then that he executed the views in the ' Rhenish Pocket-book,' and the two masterly engravings for the ' Travels in Brazil ' of Prince Maximilian of Neuwied. He also executed four landscapes, after Claude and Ruisdael, for the ' Musee Napo- leon.' He died at Bad Rippoldsau in 1831. Original engraving by Haldenwang, title: "Paysage", image size approx. 11-1/4 x 14-1/2" plus wide clean margins. Circa 1820-1828. Remarkable detail...........100-150
39. [ART] Henry William (H.W.) Burgess was a landscape painter based in London. He came from the Burgess family of British artists, the son of portraitist William (d. 1812) and grandson of Thomas (fl. 1766-1786), and his own son John-Bagnold (1830-1897) also became a painter. Between 1809 and 1844, Burgess exhibited a large number of works at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, Suffolk Street and the New Water-Colour Society in London. He also served as landscape painter to William IV beginning in 1826. Offered here is an original lithograph titled "Thorn Trees, in Bushy Park, Middlesex", image approx. 15.5 x 11" plus margins. This lithograph was published by the firm of Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850), the famous English draftsman, lithographer and printer. He worked mainly in London, although he had trained in Paris as a painter and travelled extensively in Europe making topographical drawings. In 1817, on a visit to Munich, he was introduced to lithography by the pioneering lithographer Alois Senefelder. The following year he produced Twenty-four Views of Italy, a set of images he had drawn and lithographed. Dissatisfied with the way his work had been printed, Hullmandel set up his own lithographic press. The quality of work he published by himself and other artists such as Giovanni Belzoni helped popularize the topographical lithograph among British artists. This is contained in old blue mat & shrink-wrapped. Not examined out of shrink-wrap.............300-600

46. [MUSIC] Louis-Charles-Bonaventure-Alfred
Bruneau (1857–1934) French composer
who played a key role in the introduction of realism in
French opera. In his youth, Bruneau studied the cello at the
Paris Conservatory, and played in the Pasdeloup orchestra.
He soon began to compose, writing a cantata, Genevieve de
Paris while still a young man. In 1884 his Ouverture
heroique was performed, followed by the choral symphonies,
Léda (1884), La belle au bois dormant (1886). In 1887,
he produced his first opera, Kérim. The following year,
Bruneau met Émile Zola, launching a collaboration between
the two men that would last for two decades. Bruneau's 1891
opera Le rêve was based on the Zola story of the same name,
and in the coming years Zola would provide the subject
matter for many of Bruneau's works, including L'attaque du
moulin (1893). Zola himself wrote the libretti for the
operas Messidor (1897) and L'Ouragan (1901). Other works
influenced by Zola include L'enfant roi (1905), Naïs
Micoulin (1907), Les quatres journées (1916), and Lazare
(produced posthumously in 1954). Other operatic works by
Bruneau contained themes by Hans Christian Andersen (Le
jardin du Paris in 1923) and Victor Hugo (Angelo, tyran de
Padoue in 1928). Bruneau's orchestral works show the
influence of Wagner. His other works include his Requiem
(1896) and two collections of songs, Lieds de France and
Chansons à danser.Bruneau was decorated with the Legion of
Honor in 1895. ALS, 1912, 1p.

[ART] Frank
Beard (1842-1905) grew
to become a widely known American illustrator,
"chalk talk" artist, and cartoonist in the late
19th century. In early 1850s, Beard was a
boy of 7 or 8 years old when he first saw Yankee
Notions, which he later termed "the first American
comic journal," published by T.W. Strong in New
York City USA. His favorite was Brother Jonathan
published by Wilson & Company in New York
City. He and his brothers would "spread the pages
on the floor and lie on our stomachs, studying the
pictures and spelling out the titles and jokes
beneath them, for hours together." Beard's first
published work as an illustrator may have appeared
in Comic Monthly, published from 1859 to 1881. His
cartoons also appeared in Judge. Beard drew both
single panel cartoons and sequential art (comics).
Around 1893 he began illustrating for The Ram's
Horn, a non-denominational Christian periodical
published during the 1890s and early 1900s by
Frederick L. Chapman & Company in Chicago,
Illinois USA. The magazine warned of the growing
dangers of secularism in American society which
were becoming more evident at that time.
Eventually Beard became the magazine's principal
illustrator, drawing both covers and interior
illustrations. It is reported that, at some point
in his career, Beard vowed to no longer do any
cartoons which weren't aimed at spreading
Christianity. Some of The Ram's Horn material was
gathered together into a book called Fifty Great
Cartoons(1899), published by the magazine for its
subscribers. A full color edition of Beard's
artwork, entitled One Hundred Sermon Pictures, was
published in 1902. Frank's brother was
Daniel Carter Beard [1850-1941] American
illustrator, author, youth leader, and social
reformer who founded the Sons of Daniel Boone in
1905, which Beard later merged with the Boy Scouts
of America (BSA). Offered here is an original ink

70. Rowland
Gibson Hazard (1801-1888) American
industrialist, politician, and social reformer. Hazard was
born in South Kingstown, Rhode Island but grew up in
Bristol, Pennsylvania, in the home of his maternal
grandfather, Isaac Peace. He was educated in a Quaker
boarding school in Burlington, New Jersey, where he
developed a particular interest in mathematics. In 1819 he
returned to Rhode Island to join his elder brother Isaac in
the management of the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company. In
1828 he married Caroline Newbold of Bucks County,
Pennsylvania. There is much we could say about his business
and political careers but we will mention his activity
related to slavery because Hazard considered "as the
greatest effort of his life" (according to his
granddaughter) began when he was in New Orleans on business
in the winter of 1841. After he learned that a free
African-American man from Newport, Rhode Island was in
custody in Louisiana as an escaped slave, his investigations
found that many free African-Americans were being detained
under the assumption they were escaped slaves. He worked
with Jacob Barker [see lot 79 above in this auction], then a
New Orleans lawyer, to obtain freedom for nearly 100 people
being held as slaves. The action later led to charges being
filed against several public officials who were responsible
for the illegal detentions. His involvement with
abolitionist causes and in the Republican Party eventually
caused his company to lose favor with its markets in the
southern United States. This helped to prompt the Peace Dale
mills' transition from making cheap cotton products to
selling higher quality woolens. In 1854, while serving in
the state legislature, he made a speech criticizing the
Stonington Railroad Company for charging discriminatory
rates for both freight and passengers. Shortly thereafter,
the railroad company retaliated by refusing to let Hazard
ride on one of its trains. Resolutions passed by the South
Kingstown Town Council in reaction to his treatment are said
to have formed "the germ of" the Interstate Commerce Law of
1886. Hazard retired from the textile business in 1866 and
invested in the Union Pacific Railroad. After Union Pacific
fell into financial disarray and became a party to the
Crédit Mobilier scandal of 1872, Hazard spent much time
dealing with the company's financial affairs. Document

71. [PIONEER KENTUCKY] Duff Green
(1791-1875) was an American teacher, military leader,
politician, journalist, author, diplomat, industrialist and
businessman. Born in Woodford County, Kentucky, he was a
school teacher in his native state of Kentucky. He served
under General William Harrison and the Kentucky militia in
the War of 1812 and led the Missouri Brigade in the Indian
Campaign, earning the rank brigadier general. Thereafter he
was known by many as General Duff Green. He then
settled in Missouri, where he worked as a schoolmaster and
practiced law. He was a member of the Missouri
Constitutional Convention of 1820, and was elected to the
Missouri House of Representatives in 1820 and to the state
Senate in 1822, serving one term in each house. Becoming
interested in journalism, he purchased and for two years
edited the St Louis Enquirer. In 1826, in Washington,
D.C., he bought and later edited, The United States
Telegraph, which became the principal organ of Andrew
Jackson's backers, helping him defeat John Quincy Adams in
the presidential election of 1828. Upon Jackson's election
to the presidency, the Telegraph became the principal
mouthpiece of the administration, receiving printing
patronage estimated at $50,000 a year. Green became one of
the unofficial advisers of Jackson known as the
Kitchen Cabinet on which Jackson depended heavily following
the Petticoat affair. In the quarrel between Jackson and his
vice president John C. Calhoun, who had also been Adams'
vice president, Green supported Calhoun, and through the
Telegraph, violently attacked the Jackson
administration. In consequence, the Jackson
administration revoked its patronage for the Telegraph in
the spring of 1831. Under the date of December 24, 1833,
Adams records in his diary that James Blair "had knocked
down and very severely beaten Duff Green, editor of the
Telegraph..." Blair paid "three hundred dollars fine for
beating and breaking the bones" of Green. Green,
however, continued to edit The United States Telegraph in
the Calhoun interest until 1835, and gave vigorous support
to that Calhoun's nullification views. Duff's daughter
Margaret Maria was the mother of Calhoun's grandson, also
named John Caldwell Calhoun. In his second term,
Jackson replaced Calhoun with Martin Van Buren as his vice
president. From 1835 to 1838 Duff edited The
Reformation, a radically partisan publication, devoted to
free trade, states' rights, and the idea of "Manifest
Destiny". In 1840 Green established the Pilot in
Baltimore to support the Harrison-Tyler ticket. Although
initially endorsed by the Whig party, Green's controversial
editorials regarding Catholic influence in American politics
alienated his readers. Subscriptions declined, and
publication suspended in 1841. In 1841-1843 he was in
Europe on behalf of the Tyler administration, and he is said
to have been instrumental in causing the appointment of Lord
Ashburton to negotiate in Washington concerning the boundary
dispute between Maine and Canada. In January 1843
Green established in New York City a short-lived journal,
The Republic, to combat the spoils system and to advocate
free trade. In September 1844 Calhoun, then secretary of
state, sent Green to Texas ostensibly as consul at
Galveston, but actually, it appears, to report to the
administration, then considering the question of the
annexation of Texas, concerning the political situation in
Texas and Mexico. After the close of the war with
Mexico, Green was sent to that country in 1849 by President
Taylor to negotiate concerning the moneys which, by the
treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the United States had agreed to
pay; and he saved his country a considerable sum by
arranging for payment in exchange instead of in
specie. Subsequently Green was engaged in railway
building in Georgia and Alabama. He was also one of the
founding associates in the incorporation of the New Mexican
Railway Company. Duff was attracted to Dalton, Georgia in
1851 by the construction of the East Tennessee and Virginia
Railroad from Knoxville, Tennessee to connect with the
Western and Atlantic Railroad. He profited by making
strategic land purchases. As his wealth grew, he donated
land for many public projects in Dalton. During the Civil
War Green organized three iron manufacturing plants for
production of iron, nails, horseshoes, and rails in support
of the Confederacy. He and his son Ben also established the
Dalton Arms Company in 1862. After the war he was pardoned
by President Andrew Johnson for his support of the
Confederacy and paid a $20,000 fine. Duff Green was
one of the founding members of the Pennsylvania Fiscal
Agency, incorporated Nov 1, 1859 in Pennsylvania. At
that time he gained 42,000 shares but paid with a bad check
the 5% payment on only 5,000 shares. On March 26,
1864 Thomas C. Durant, vice president of the Union Pacific
Railroad Company purchased the corporation as a front
construction company, whereby the directors and principal
stock holders of the Union Pacific retained all construction
profits. They then used these funds to purchase Union
Pacific stock at par value and resell it on the open market
for even greater profits. Durant changed the company name to
the Crédit Mobilier of America. The scandal involving the
sale of discounted Credit Mobilier stock to Congressional
members voting for payment of exorbitant transcontinental
railroad construction costs took place during the Johnson
administration but was uncovered during the Grant
administration. Green died in Dalton, a city that he had
helped to build. Offered here is a signed document
from his early years in Elizabethtown, Ky, dated 1813,
approx. 7-3/4 x 5 in. His signature
appears first line at top. VG. The picture of Duff
Green is not included here...........100-150

1883 and continued operation until 1900. It was one of
the largest art schools in the city, having several hundred
scholars. By the end of the 19th century, Boston had
become an important art center. A number of highly
respected artists were teaching in city. The rich
environment for art had been promoted at least in part by
the Massachusetts Drawing Act of 1870. The act mandated
drawing lessons in public schools. To fill the need for art
teachers, Massachusetts Normal Art (MNA) was established in
1873. Two blocks behind the Museum of Fine Arts, in the New
Studio Building near the Back Bay Station, was the Cowles
Art School (1883). Cowles Art School offered
instruction in figure drawing and painting from the flat
cast and life, artistic anatomy, perspective and

After the turn of the century Reid freelanced to Judge, McClure's, the Saturday Evening Post, the American and other magazines for about fifteen years; during that time and for years thereafter he operated his own syndicate, distributing Reid cartoons to many local and rural papers around America. In addition, he founded and published a newspaper (the Leavenworth Post, 1905-23) and a magazine (the Kansas Farmer, 1908-16), and he headed various press associations and an insurance company. Reid stayed active as an artist all his life, designing medals, painting murals and of course continuing his editorial cartoons. He died on November 26 1955, bequeathing the Albert T. Reid Cartoon Museum to the School of Journalism at the University of Kansas. His mastery of the pen was overwhelming, and he had an unerring sense of design and caricature. He knew the artists Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. He was a member of: Artists Guild of the Author's League of America; Society of Illustrators. He won a prize at 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, San Francisco. His work hangs in: Ft. Hays Kansas State College; State House, Topeka; did WPA murals in Kans. & Okla.; designed/built the Kansas Semi-Centenn. Expo., Topeka [1911]; designed medal for Washington Bicentenn. Comm. Reid left Kansas for good in 1919 when he accepted a position to become director of pictorial publicity for the Republican campaign of 1920. Offered here are approx. 19 pieces from the Estate of Albert T. Reid. [1] Large color watercolor drawing of President Herbert Hoover. The ititle is "While Others Make Speeches". Interesting to note the image of Abraham Lincoln above. This was possibly done while Reid was director of pictorial publicity for the Republican campaign of 1920. The painted image area is approx. 18 x 17" plus slim margins Damaged area at margins; one just affecting image near top right edge. See scan 1 below. Main image area is in very good condition. [2] Reproduction print of his drawing done for his painting "First meeting of the two great emancipators. Overall 18 x 14.5". In the month of March, 1830, Abraham Lincoln, in company with his father, step-mother and other relatives, migrated from Spencer County, Indiana to Macon County, Illinois. The party traveled by oxen. The course of the journey was through Vincennes, and it was here, in the office of "The Western Sun and General Advertiser," that Lincoln first saw a printing press. [3] original drawing - study used in preparation for his work titled "First Meeting of the two great emancipators." Unsigned, as are the rest of the sketches offered here. [4] group of 4 pencil sketches mostly studies of Lincoln. [5] more sketches. [6] sketch & small photo of the painting all this was done for. [7] old photograph identified on back in Reid's handwriting: Governor James K. Duff of Penn. Mayor Samuels of Philadelphia. Albert T. Reid. Also in Reid's handwriting is a piece: "Wrong press - pointed out to me by author of 'Adam Ramage and his Presses.' This one not made until 15 years after the Vincennes incident. [ART] Sir
HUBERT von HERKOMER, (1849-1914,
painter, R.A., R.W.S.) SELF-PORTRAIT, original etching, head
and shoulders, with his children Siegfried and Elsa below
half-length as a vignette, signed ('HH') and dated '79 on the
plate, titled 'Published London April 1st 1880 by The British
and Foreign Artists Association', 'Entered according to act of
Congress in the year 1880 by Knoedler & Co in the office
of the Librarian of Congress at Washington', extremely fine
impression, 13-1/2 x 8 in. Herkomer regarded this as his
best etching. He described the circumstances of the production
of it when on a camping trip to Wales in 1879. 'As I knew the
painting of one landscape would not give me sufficient
occupation for so many weeks, I took with me all the
paraphernalia of the etcher - plates, grounds, dishes, acids,
and a small printing press (an invention of Mr Hamerton's).
This wretched little contrivance proved utterly inadequate for
my work. In order to get a decent impression we tightened the
rollers to their last gasp, and then we dragged the whole
machine around the tent in the vain attempt to turn the toy
handles. Still, it was under these circumstances that I did -
what I consider my best etching - a portrait of (the handy
model) myself, with my two children in the lower corner of the
plate.' Very good condition. In an auction
at Bonhams [London] [2005] another example of this
etching was estimated at £500 - 600 US$ 840 -
1,000. It realized $730.........700-900

87. Margaret Webster
(1905-1972) American-born theater actress, producer and
director. Margaret Webster was born in New York City, the
daughter of two famous actors, Ben Webster and Dame May Whitty.
She spent the early part of her career in England, where she
became well known in the theatre. She worked for several
established theatrical companies, including from 1929-1930 at
the Old Vic. She returned to the US in 1937 and
began an impressive run directing the Shakespeare play, Richard
II with Maurice Evans in the title role. They formed a
partnership that lasted until 1942, with Webster directing Evans
in Broadway productions of Hamlet, Twelfth Night and Henry IV,
Part I. It was while she was directing Hamlet in 1938 that she
began her long romantic relationship with actress Eva Le
Gallienne. When Evans joined the army, Webster continued
to have success directing classical plays on Broadway, notably
The Cherry Orchard (1944) starring Le Gallienne, and her
greatest triumph, Othello (1943), starring Paul Robeson in the
title role and Jose Ferrer as Iago, which ran for 296
performances, by far the longest run of a Shakespearean
production on Broadway, a record that has not been remotely
approached since. She also played the role of Emilia in the
production. In 1945, she staged the longest-running performance
of Shakespeare's The Tempest ever to play Broadway, with Arnold
Moss as Prospero, Canada Lee as Caliban, and ballerina Vera
Zorina as Ariel. In 1946, Webster and Le Gallienne
co-founded the American Repertory Theater. In

published two novels, "The Buried Stream" (1929) and "Under the
Spreading Tree" (1931) but thereafter focused on poetry. She
published six individual collections with Jonathan Cape and a
"Collected Poems" in 1948. Her "Collected Poems" contains an
introduction by C. Day-Lewis who noted the influences of Emily
Dickinson, Hopkins and Christina Rossetti. Her verse appeared in
many periodicals and anthologies including "The Adelphi",
"Country Life", "Kingdom Come", "The Listener", "The London
Mercury, "The Lyric" (USA), "The Observer", "Orion", "Punch",
"The Spectator", "Time and Tide and "Poetry" (USA). During

[ART] Gwen Raverat
(1885-1957) English wood engraver who was a founder member
of the Society of Wood Engravers. She was the granddaughter of
the naturalist Charles Darwin and the first cousin of the poet
Frances Cornford. She married the French painter Jacques
Raverat in 1911. They were active in the Bloomsbury Group and
Rupert Brooke's Neo-Pagan group until they moved to the south
of France, where they lived in Vence, near Nice, until his
death from multiple sclerosis in 1925. Raverat was one of the
very first wood engravers recognised as modern. She went to
the Slade School in 1908, but stood outside the groups growing
up at the time, the group that gathered around Eric Gill at
Ditchling and the group that grew up at the Central School of
Arts and Crafts around Noel Rooke. She was influenced by the
Impressionists and Post-Impressionists and developed her own
painterly style of engraving. There was some similarity
between her early engravings and those of Gill, and she did
know Gill, but the similarity was based mostly on her black
line style at the time, influenced by Lucien Pissarro, and the
semi-religious themes that she then chose. Balston credits her
with having produced one of the first two books illustrated
with modern wood engravings. This was Spring Morning
by her cousin Frances Cornford, published by the Poetry
Bookshop in 1915. It was accessioned at the British Library in
May 1915, which makes it the first modern book illustrated
with wood engravings, as the other contender, The Devil's
Devices illustrated by Eric Gill, was accessioned in December
1915. Original wood-engraving, image is 4-1/8 x 6" plus

His most famous comic-book work was with the 1960s superspy feature "Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." in Marvel Comics' Strange Tales and in the subsequent eponymous series. Steranko earned lasting acclaim for his innovations in sequential art during the Silver Age of comic books, particularly his infusion of surrealism, op art, and graphic design into the medium. His work has been published in many countries and his influence on the field has remained strong since his comics heyday. He was inducted into the Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2006. For the movie industry, Steranko has produced a number of posters for various films, and was a conceptual artist on Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), doing production designs for the film and designing the character of Indiana Jones. He also served in a similar capacity as project conceptualist on Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) and wrote the episode "The Ties That Bind" of the DC Comics animated TV series Justice League Unlimited. He has "amassed an enormous portfolio of more than sixty projects (which he called the "Theater of Concepts") designed to be seen in multimedia form, drew the comic-book adaptation of the 1981 film Outland, which was serialized in Heavy Metal magazine. From 1830 till the approach of the Civil War he spoke and wrote on this theme so frequently and vigorously that he became one of the most uncompromising and conspicuous leaders in the crusade against liquor. He wrote Three Temperance Tales (2 vols., 1848), twenty-one stories of a tract-like nature bearing such titles as "My Mother's Gold Ring", "I Am Afraid There Is A God", "Groggy Harbor", and "An Irish Heart", first published in separate issues between 1833 and 1843. These were widely distributed by religious and temperance societies as well as by Sargent himself. CLIPPED SIGNATURE 1861. 125. (ANIMATION) RALPH BAKSHI - American animator/draftsman. In the late 1950s & early 1960s he worked at CBS-Terrytoons on such series as Heckle and Jeckle and Mighty Mouse. From there he went to Famous Studios-Paramount, where he directed countless Casper the Friendly Ghost and Little Audrey cartoons, among others. During the 1960s he also animated Peter Max's commercials. When Famous Studios closed in 1967, Bakshi went into partnership with Steve Krantz. Their first venture was Fritz the Cat, released in 1972. The success of Fritz prompted Heavy Traffic [1973], a funny-sad chronicle of life in New York's slums. Striking out on his own, Bakshi produced the sometimes brilliant, often disappointing Coonskin [1974]; also Wizards [1977]; Lord of the Rings [1978]. Ralph Bakshi occupies a somewhat ambiguous position in the animation world. He is one of the more original artists at work in the animated cartoon medium. He has become a cult figure. Offered here are original drawings by Ralph Bakshi, all unsigned but guaranteed authentic. As these are "working studies" there was no reason for him to have signed them. We checked eBay on 2/27/10 to see if there were any Bakshi drawings offered and found but one unsigned priced at $499. This seems high as his signed drawings [doodles as he calls them] like these are priced at $295 each. Our estimates for each is 100-150. View each below and bid on individual drawings.

One of America's Earliest Western Singing Groups
166. [MUSIC] The Sons of the Pioneers are one of America's earliest Western singing groups whose classic recordings set a new standard for performers of Western music. Known for the high quality of their vocal performances, musicianship, and songwriting, they produced finely-crafted and innovative recordings that have inspired many Western music performers and remained popular through the years. Since 1933, through many changes in membership, the Sons of the Pioneers have remained one of the longest-surviving country music vocal groups in history. Between 1935 and 1984, the Sons of the Pioneers appeared in 87 films, several movie shorts, and a television series. In 1937, the Sons Of The Pioneers signed a deal with Columbia Pictures to appear in a number of movies. In 1938, Leonard Slye was offered a contract as an actor with rival Republic Pictures. Part of that deal required him to officially leave the group. Leonard Slye changed his name to Roy Rogers, and went on to achieve major success as a singing cowboy in the movies. Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers still remained close throughout the coming years. When their contract with Columbia Pictures ended, they signed a new contract with Republic Pictures to be with Roy. They were soon appearing as highly popular supporting players in many of Roy Rogers' movies. Rare Signed vintage vintage 8x10 photograph. SIGNED on the front by Pat Brady & Hugh Farr. of 1807, Rodgers commanded operations along the Atlantic Coast,

197. Captain William Easby (1791-1854) Shipbuilder and Early Washington Entrepreneur. One of the first indications of his presence is his signature is on the WNY mechanics letter to President Thomas Jefferson, commending Jefferson on his election 1805. As a young intelligent and energetic shipwright he advanced rapidly to become a Master Boat Builder. Like other early Yard employees, Easby served as a member of the District of Columbia militia, during the War of 1812 where he saw active service as a private with Commodore Barney's command in August 1814. Easby was with Barney's unit when they futility tried to stop a large number of veteran British regulars at Bladensburg Md. Following the American defeat, the British advanced on the Capitol and Navy Yard was set ablaze to prevent the British capturing stored naval supplies and gun powder. Following the conflagration, Easby like other civilian employees was out of work for a year. As a married man with two children to support, Easby returned to Philadelphia where his family lived and presumably found work till the following year when he was once again able to resume his duties at the Yard. In 1824 President James Monroe made Easby a Captain of Riflemen of the Second Legion, First Brigade, of the Militia of the District of Columbia. Easby was ever after known by the title thus awarded him. William Easby's name is listed in the 1827 Directory of the City of Washington, his occupation: master boat builder at navy yard and his residence: "down w Es btw 9 and 10e." On March 24, 1828, William Easby added his name to that of one thousand citizens of the District of Columbia petitioning the Congress to gradually abolish slavery in the District of Columbia and to ban the further importation and sale of slaves within the District. Many of those who signed the memorial were slave holders. Yard employees like Master Caulker Robert Armistead, Naval Constructor William Doughty, Clerk Thomas Howard and Master Shipwright Thomas Lyndall all leased their human property to WNY. Many of these men saw no contradiction in owing enslaved workers and favoring gradual compensated emancipation. Their support though was contingent however on the provision that all newly emancipated individuals of African descent, immediately immigrate to Africa. Easby's exact position on slavery and emancipation is not known, however Easby had business dealing with black freeman Michael Shiner in 1848 when he bought land from Shiner. His last will contains no reference to slaves nor is there any evidence that Easby ever owned slaves or used enslaved workers in his businesses or household. Shortly after Andrew Jackson's election Easby left federal employment and set up his shipbuilding firm. He built a successful shipbuilding operation and became a noted ship designer and builder. Among the vessels launched at Easby's Wharf was the Sailing Ship Russia. Easby later built a series of Coast Guard Revenue Cutters such as the Cutter Forward in 1842. Another project which occupied Easby was a lime kiln and his experiments to convert coal particles into solid lumps which would be furnace ready. Easby was granted a patent on the process on August 29, 1848. Easby was an early member of the Washington Monument Association which solicited funding and support to raise a memorial to the nation's first president. His continuing involvement with science is reflected in his position as Treasurer of the National Institute, a precursor of the Smithsonian Institute. Manuscript Document Signed, 1834, 1p, 7-3/4 x 9-3/4". In this document Easby sells for $650 to John Easby of Philadelphia certain described property (7 beds, chairs, tables, looking glasses, carpets, piano forte, gilt edge china, knives & other kitchen utensils, silver tea spoons, 400 books, 40 prints and paintings, etc). 198. [MUSIC] GEORGE HARRY MORETON (1864-1961) English composer and organist. He was taught music by his mother right from the start and was so talented that by the age of 8 years he was playing the organ at his parish church, Saint John the Baptist, in Devonport. He later played at Saint Peter's Church in Plymouth. He continued studying under Mr W G Hannaford and Mr John Hele and and at the age of 10 his mother suggested that he apply for the post of organist at the Stoke Damerel Church. Apparently he got this post thanks to an amusing chance. There was a dispute between the Rector and the then organist because the latter had dismissed a choirboy. Unfortunately, the choirboy was due to be the soloist at the performance of a particular anthem and the Rector was very angry about the dismissal. He invited Mrs Moreton to be the organist but she declined and recommended her son instead, who was duly appointed to the post. But the former organist did not take his own dismissal very kindly and for the first five Sundays, young Harry sat side by side on the stool with the former organist, who refused to unlock the organ because he claimed that he had not been properly discharged. In due course he became an Associate of the College of Organists and in due course a Fellow of the College. AMQS from "Elegiac Romance", approx. 6-1/2 x 5-1/4. VG........50-75

Ordained into the Unitarian church he first became an active
minister at Louisville, Kentucky, then a slave state, and soon
threw himself into the national movement for the abolition of
slavery. In 1839 he returned to Boston where he and his friends
established (1841) the Church of the Disciples which brought
together a body of people to apply the Christian religion to
social problems of the day. Clarke contributed essays to
The Christian Examiner, The Christian Inquirer, The Christian
Register, The Dial, Harper's, The Index, and Atlantic Monthly.
In addition to sermons, speeches, hymnals, and liturgies, he
published 28 books and over 120 pamphlets during his lifetime.
In 1855, Clarke purchased the former site of Brook Farm,
intending to start a new Utopian community there. This never
came to pass, instead the land was offered to President Abraham
Lincoln during the American Civil War; the Second Massachusetts
Regiment used it for training and named it "Camp Andrew".
In November 1861, Clarke was in Washington, D.C. with Samuel
Gridley Howe and Julia Ward Howe. After hearing the song "John
Brown's Body", he suggested that Mrs. Howe write new lyrics; the
result was "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". ALS,

234. [FRANCE] Nicolas de Lamoignon - Nicolas Lamoignon-Bâville (1648-1724) was a French official said to have been accused by Voltaire of instigating the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He made himself famous by the measures he adopted against the Protestants, and by the manner in which he associated himself with the religious policy of Louvois, of which the revocation of the Edict of Nantes was the culminating point. But it is without proof that Voltaire accused him of having instigated this revocation. "I never counselled the revocation of the Edict of Nantes", he wrote to his brother in 1708. On the contrary he considered that "in religion hearts must be attacked, for it is there that it resides", and immediately after the revocation he sent for Bourdaloue to come and evangelize the Protestants of Montpellier. From 1702 to 1704 he helped in the repression of the uprising of the Camisards, occasioned in the Cevennes by English and Calvinistic influences.Document Signed, 1710, 4-pages, 8-1/4 x 12". [ART] Jacques Villon
(1875 - 1963) A painter and printmaker, Villon was known for his
Cubist-style works, and is especially noted by art historians
for "his creation of a purely graphic language for Cubism. He
first came to the attention of the American public when his work
was included in the 1913 New York Armory Show, which introduced
modernism to the United Sates. All of his work sold at this
exhibition. He was from a cultured family in the Normandy region
of France, and was much influenced by his maternal grandfather,
Emile Nicolle, who gave him early artistic training. Villon was
born with the name of Gaston Emile Duchamp, and was the older
brother of artists Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Marcel Duchamp and
Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Honoring the French medieval poet,
François Villon, and so as not to be confused artistically with
his siblings, he changed his name to Jacques Villon. Jacques
Villon died in his studio on June 9, 1963, and three years
later, Marcel Duchamp, his last surviving brother, organized an
exhibition of his work, which was held at the Musée National
d'Art Moderne in Paris. In 1922 Villon was commissioned by the
Galerie Bernheim-Jeune to produce a series of color aquatints
after 38 major 19th and 20th century paintings. These included
works after Braque, Matisse, Renoir, Manet, Picasso, Cezanne,
Dufy, Modigliani, Bonnard and numerous others. Villon
collaborated with these master artists and signed these prints
so that they provided the public with access to works which
otherwise would not be available. Color aquatint, signed in the
plate (not pencil signed), 1923, title "NATURE MORTE", after
Georges Braque, mat opening size 25-1/2 x 9 in. Framed. Not

250. [ART - OLDMASTER] Pierre-Etienne MOITTE (1722, Paris, 1780, Paris) French engraver, part of a family of artists. He studied in Paris with Jacques-Firmin Beauvarlet and Pierre-François Beaumont (1719-1769). He was accepted in 1771 by the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture and subsequently signed his prints 'Graveur du Roi'. Between c. 1747 and 1754 he was one of the principal engravers commissioned to work for the 'Cabinet de S.E.M. Le Comte de Brühl,' a collection published in Dresden in 1754 and consisting of 50 plates after selected paintings from the celebrated collection owned by Heinrich von Brühl. In addition to the Mystic Marriage of St Catherine after Correggio and three history subjects after Jean-Baptiste Corneille, Moitte contributed 11 masterly pieces after Dutch and Flemish paintings, including the Dutch Merchant and the Flemish Cook after Gerrit Dou; the Broken Egg, after Frans van Mieris the Elder; the Judgement of Paris after Rubens; four landscapes after Jacob van Ruisdael and Guillam Dubois (c. 1610-80); and Travellers' Rest and Horses at the Watering Trough after Philips Wouwerman. Moitte enjoyed a successful career in Paris by reproducing works after 18th-century French painters such as Nicolas Lancret, François Boucher and Pierre-Antoine Baudouin. Above all, he popularised sentimental genre paintings by Greuze, producing such prints as the Wrathful Mother, Repentance and the Idle Woman. Like most reproductive printmakers of the period, Moitte also engraved designs for book illustrations; thus he provided 17 plates after drawings by Jean-Baptiste Oudry for the four-volume folio edition of Jean de La Fontaine's Fables published between 1755 and 1759. [MUSIC] Jon Howard Appleton
(1939 - ) American composer and teacher who was
a pioneer in electro-acoustic music. His earliest
compositions in the medium, e.g. Chef d'Oeuvre and Newark
Airport Rock attracted attention because they established a
new tradition some have called programmatic electronic
music. In 1970 he won Guggenheim, Fulbright and
American-Scandinavian Foundation fellowships. When he was
twenty-eight years old he joined the faculty of Dartmouth
College where he established one of the first electronic
music studios in the United States. He remained there
intermittently for forty-two years. In the mid-1970s he left
Dartmouth to briefly become the head of Elektronmusikstudion
(EMS) in Stockholm, Sweden. In the late 1970s, together with
Sydney Alonso and Cameron Jones he helped develop the first
commercial digital synthesizer called the Synclavier.
For a decade he toured around the United States and Europe
performing the compositions he composed for this instrument.
In the early 1990s he helped found the Theremin Center for
Electronic Music at the Moscow Conservatory of Music where
he continues to teach once a year. He has also taught at
Keio University (Mita) in Tokyo, Japan, CCRMA at Stanford
University and the University of California Santa Cruz. In
his later years he has devoted most of his time to the
composition of instrumental and choral music in a
quasi-Romantic vein which has largely been performed only in

261. [OPERA] John M. Wieting M.D. (1817-1888) physician and medical lecturer. He is perhaps best known for his Wieting Opera House, considered a "world class" cultural institution. Originally, a building called Wieting Hall, which was a lecture hall, was built at 100 West Water Street at the corner of South Salina Street in 1852 and was lost to fire in 1856. The building was rebuilt and reopened in 1870 as the Wieting Opera House and had a seating capacity of 1,017. The first opera that took place in the house, however, did not occur until 1886 when the American Opera Company made a brief appearance. In fact, opera was never intended as the main venue in the theater. At that time, towns throughout America had opera houses where operas were seldom or never performed. The "opera house" designation simply provided a respectable cover for places that presented a variety of popular entertainments. Oftentimes they were called "museums." ALS, Bromfield House, 1854, 1p. 265. [MARYLAND] Augustus Williamson Bradford (1806-1881) he was the 32nd Governor of Maryland from 1862 to 1866. He served as governor during the Civil War and paid a heavy price for his devotion to the Union. In February 1861, Governor Thomas H. Hicks appointed Bradford one of Maryland’s delegates to the Washington Peace Conference, where he made a speech supporting the Union. Following the conference, the Union Party named Bradford as its candidate for governor, opposing the Democratic candidate General Benjamin C. Howard. Bradford defeated Howard by approximately 30,000 votes and took office on January 8, 1862. During his term, he violently opposed the Federal government’s interference in Maryland’s elections, upheld the dignity of the State government and defied the harsh and arbitrary military occupation, and went to great lengths to keep the State in the Union. At the same time he upheld the Federal government's authority although he differed with its methods. In September 1862, he was one of the many northern governors to attend the Loyal War Governors' Conference in Altoona, Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, the Confederates invaded Maryland three times. During the last of these, Bradley T. Johnson’s raiders visited Bradford’s home in July 1864, and during his absence, burned it to the ground together with all his furniture, library, and papers. This action was partially in retaliation for Union General David Hunter’s burning of the home of Governor John Letcher of Virginia, and partially because of Bradford’s "uncompromising spirit and strong leanings." During his four years in office, Augustus Bradford released Samuel Green (freedman) from jail on the condition he leave the state. Green was an African-American slave and minister, who was jailed in 1857 for possessing a copy of the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. DOCUMENT SIGNED, 1865, Mechanics Bank, approx. 7-1/2 x 2-3/4. Confederate Army. In 1863, Pratt tried to vote in the November
election. He was not allowed to vote because he would not take a
loyalty oath. Pratt and his secretary Col. Nicholson were
arrested because of the refusal on November 21, 1863. He was
imprisoned at Fort Monroe, but was later released. He moved to
Baltimore, Maryland in 1864, resuming the practice of law. The

280. [FRANCE] Alphonse-Marie Thomas Bérenger (1785-1866),
known as Thomas Bérenger or Berenger de la Drôme, was a French
lawyer and politician. He was the son of a deputy of the third
estate of Dauphiné to the Constituent Assembly, born in Valence.
He entered the magistracy and became procureur general at
Grenoble, but resigned this office on the Bourbon Restoration.
He then devoted himself mainly to the study of criminal law, and
in 1818 published La justice criminelle en France , in which
with great courage he attacked the special tribunals, provosts'
courts or military commissions which were the main instruments
of the Reaction, and advocated a return to the old common law
and trial by jury . The book had a considerable effect in
discrediting the reactionary policy of the government; but it
was not until 1828, when Bérenger was elected to the chamber,
that he had an opportunity of exercising a personal influence on
affairs as a member of the group known as that of constitutional
opposition. His courage, as well as his moderation, was again
displayed during the revolution of 1830, when, as president of
the parliamentary commission for the trial of the ministers of
Charles X, he braved the fury of the mob and secured a sentence
of imprisonment in place of the death penalty for which they
clamoured. His position in the chamber became one of much
influence, and he had a large share in the modelling of the new
constitution, though his effort to secure a hereditary peerage
failed. Above all he was instrumental in framing the new
criminal code, based on more humanitarian principles, which was
issued in 1835. It was due to him that, in 1832, the right, so
important in actual French practice, was given to juries to find
"extenuating circumstances" in cases when guilt involved the
death penalty. In 1831 he had been made a member of the court of
appeal (cour de cassation}, and the same year was nominated a
member of the Academy of Political and Moral Sciences (Académie
des Sciences Morales et Politiques). He was raised to the
peerage in 1839. This status he lost owing to the revolution of
1848 which ended his career as a politician. As a judge,
however, his activity continued. He was president of the high
courts of Bourges and Versailles in 1849. Having been appointed
president of one of the chambers of the court of appeal, he
devoted himself entirely to judicial work until his retirement,
under the age limit, on 31 May 1860. He now withdrew to his
native town, and occupied himself with his favorite work of
reform of criminal law. In 1833, he had shared in the foundation
of a society for the reclamation of young criminals, in which he
continued to be actively interested to the end. In 1851 and
1852, on the commission of the academy of moral sciences, he had
travelled in France and England for the purpose of examining and
comparing the penal systems in the two countries. The result was
published in 1855 under the title La répression pénale,
comparaison du système pénitentiaire en France et en Angleterre. ALS,

293. GIBBON,
Edward (1737-94), the greatest English historian of his
time and author of The History of the Decline and Fall of the
Roman Empire. Gibbon was born April 27, 1737, in Putney (now
part of London), the eldest of seven children in an
upper-middle-class family; the other six all died in infancy.
Gibbon himself was a sickly child and had almost no formal
schooling. He was, however, an avid and omnivorous reader. By
the time he was approaching age 15, his health suddenly
improved, and his father entered him in Magdalen College,
University of Oxford, for what he later called in his Memoirs
"the most idle and unprofitable 14 months of my life." Study of
early Christianity led him to embrace Roman Catholicism in June
1753, thus barring him from the university. His father swiftly
packed him off to Lausanne, Switzerland, in care of a Calvinist
pastor, who by Christmas, 1754, had reconciled him to
Protestantism. (The Memoirs termed it acquiescence.) ENGRAVED

(1842-1924) American artist, working mainly as an illustrator
and especially known for his (often allegorical) depiction of
animals. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His father was
an important figure in politics as well as a well-known
lawyer. At the age of 13 he left school and took a job at the
then newly-established American Express Company in Chicago,
with his parents intending him to have a business career.
Being nineteen at the outbreak of the Civil War he served in
the Union Army. After his discharge he returned to Chicago,
having decided to devote his life to art, and started studying
drawing under Walter Shirlaw at the city's Academy of Design.
In 1870 he decided to continue his studies in New York City,
which became his home for the rest of his life. He enrolled at
the National Academy of Design, where he was taught by Lemuel
Wilmarth. He joined the Art Students League, headed by his old
teacher Walter Shirlaw, in which he remained involved for the
rest of his life. By the middle of the 1870s he was already
gaining a name as a gifted illustrator. Among the many
magazines and periodicals which eventually took up his works
were the various Harper's publications (Harper's Bazaar,
Harper's Weekly, and Harper's Young People), as well as Frank
Leslie's Weekly, Century Magazine and the Ladies' Home
Journal. His career was helped along by several devoted
patrons, among them William T. Evans, John Gellatly, the
banker Grant B. Schley, and the railroad-car manufacturer
Charles Lang Freer, the founder of Washington, D.C.'s Freer
Gallery. His work on the Fables of Aesop , including an
illustration of the human and animal protagonists of each
fable plus an elaborate cover for the whole, is considered
among the best of his works. Some of Church's works are kept
in the Permanent Collection of the Fulton Decorative Arts
Gallery at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in
Hagerstown, Maryland. Others are at the collection of Dale and
Rosie Horst of Newton, Kansas, which lent them to the Fulton
Gallery in 2003, for an extensive exhibition including both
Church's original drawings and the magazines and periodicals
in which they appeared. Original etching, "The Wanderer's

His father Jacques BM Bins, comte de Saint-Victor (1772-1858), is remembered by his poem L'Espérance, and by an excellent verse translation of Anacreon. Saint-Victor, who ceased to use the title of count as being out of keeping with his democratic principles, began as a dramatic critic on the Pays in 1851, and in 1855 he succeeded Théophile Gautier on the Presse. In 1866 he migrated to the Liberté, and in 1869 joined the staff of the Moniteur universel. In 1870, during the last days of the second empire, he was made inspector-general of fine arts. Almost all Saint-Victor's work consists of articles, the best known being the collection entitled Hommes et dieux (1867). His death interrupted the publication of Les Deux Masques , in which the author intended to survey the whole dramatic literature of ancient and modern times. Sir Gerald du Maurier (1873-1934)
was an English actor and manager. He was the son of the writer
George du Maurier and brother of Sylvia Llewelyn Davies. In
1902, he married the actress Muriel Beaumont with whom he had
three daughters: writer Angela du Maurier (1904–2002),
best-seller Daphne du Maurier (1907–1989) and painter Jeanne du
Maurier (1911–1996). His popularity lay in his subtle yet
realistic acting style: a "delicately realistic style of acting
that sought to suggest rather than to state the deeper
emotions". His Times obituary said of his career: "His
parentage assured him of engagements in the best of company to
begin with; but it was his own talent that took advantage of
them." With Frank Curzon, he co-managed Wyndham's Theatre
from 1910 to 1925, and then moved to the St James's Theatre. He
served as the president of the Actors' Orphanage. Knighted in
1922 at the peak of his popularity, he continued to perform
throughout his life. In later years he took on cinema roles such
as Lord Camber's Ladies (1932), a German doctor in I Was a Spy
(1933), the emperor's valet in Catherine the Great (1934) and,
