the presence of the king and queen, he succeeded his father
Louis François de Bourbon as head of the most junior branch of
the House of Bourbon in 1776. His mother was Louise Diane

Born in Montreal, Quebec, at the age of nine, Blue emigrated to Baltimore, Maryland, where he won a contest for the best impersonation of Charlie Chaplin. Blue established himself as a solo comedian, portraying a bald-headed dumb-bell with a goofy expression. Producer Hal Roach featured him in his "Taxi Boys" comedy shorts, but Blue's dopey character was an acquired taste and he was soon replaced by other comedians. Later in the 1930s he worked at Paramount Pictures, notably in The Big Broadcast of 1938, and later at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, in films such as Easy to Wed. In 1950, he had his own short-lived TV series, The Ben Blue Show, and was also a regular on The Frank Sinatra Show. Signed vintage 1930s photo, 4-1/4 x 6-1/2". VG.......50-75

44. [ART] Filippo Morghen (Florence, 1730 - Naples, 1777) accomplished eighteenth century engraver. He studied art in Rome for a period of seven years before settling in Naples where he created etchings and engravings. Filippo Morghen was a leading engraver for the recent archaeological discoveries detailed in the Antiquities of Herculaneum, published in Naples in 1757, and the sole engraver and publisher of Views of Ruins in the Environs of Naples, published in 1766. In fact, reference is made to the discoveries at Herculaneum (then a Spanish possession) in the lower right corner of this portrait engraving of Charles III, King of Spain, where we see ancient pottery and sculpture as well as archeological tools-of-the-trade, such as a shovel and a pick. Filippo Morghen's fine engravings earned him the title of 'Engraver to the King of the Two Sicilies'. He was also the father and teacher of Rafaello Morghen (1758-1833), one of the most influential engravers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Carlos III Hispania Atque Indiarum Rex is based upon a design created by the eighteenth century Italian artist, Camillus Paderni (Naples, c. 1720 - 1770). Original Engraving, portrait of Carlos III Hispania Atque Indiarum Rex (Charles III, King of Spain), image approx. 17 X 12" plus margins. Printed on mid eighteenth century hand-made, laid paper. It is a fine, early impression in excellent condition throughout and an outstanding example of the 18th century portrait engraving. following to say about this woodcut - The joys and terrors of
woodcut are the changing states. Wood is cut away, the image
evolves, with the choice of stopping at a point which may be
satisfactory, or cutting further [with no possibility of return]
in search of a stronger statement latent in the block. This
print shares that experience. It contains three separate
imprints of many states, adding a dimension of time to the work.

See etching64. [ART] Peggy Bacon, one of America's most famous women artists. An ORIGINAL painting by the famous American artist, Peggy Bacon. Done in mixed media, she used ink and what appears to be a combination of watercolor and thinned oil paint. She has signed and dated this work 1971, and titled it THE BABES IN THE WOODS. The mat opening is 14 x 22.5 in. Executed on paper and in fine condition. Prints by Peggy Bacon are fairly common in the market, although expensive, and her paintings are quite scarce as the small number of auction records would indicate. This is a superb example of Bacon's work and should be considered important. Obviously its dark because the bear cubs are in the woods. This is guaranteed authentic and to have been painted and signed by Peggy Bacon, and we will send along a letter stating this. PEGGY BACON [1895-1987] A printmaker, illustrator, and author of children's books, Peggy Bacon later turned exclusively to fine art painting in watercolor, pastel, and oil. Her 1934 book of caricatures, "Off With Their Heads," established her as a leading satirist. Much of her work is satirical and lighthearted and frequently a commentary on the New York art world. She also chose many ordinary events in the lives of city people, giving these pieces a wry twist. She was born in Ridgefield, Connecticut to artist parents and studied at the Art Student's League. There in her drypoints, first completed in 1919, she was especially influenced by the realistic prints of John Sloan and George Bellows, but her style, with flattened forms and hardened contours, was more modern and abstract. In 1920, she married artist Alexander Brook, and during the next decade they were prominent figures in the Woodstock art colony. During the 1920s, she had two one-woman shows in New York and also illustrated and wrote numerous children's books. A satirical work on thirty-nine well known fellow artists, written in 1934 and called "Off With Their Heads," was funded by the Guggenheim Foundation. The book was greatly successful and stirred a demand for her caricatures, but she shied away from those subjects because they were hurtful to the subjects. In the late 1920s, she had began to explore lithographs, etchings, and pastel, but drypoint remained her favorite medium until the 1950s when she concentrated on oil painting. She was financially successful, selling her work well in New York, and she and her husband were part of the group of artists promoted by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. In 1940, she and her husband were divorced, and she continued to paint and also wrote novels. Her 1953 mystery, "The Inward Eye," earned the Edgar Allen Poe Mystery Award for best novel of the year. She lived to age ninety-two, spending the later years of her life at Cape Porpoise, Maine..............5000-7000

The etching depicts a full portrait of a woman in full fashionable regalia. For the setting, Robida selects the seaside, as we can see in the background where some sailors are greatly admiring the legs of a bather. 119. [ART] John W. Casilear
(1811-1893) American landscape artist
belonging to the Hudson River School. Casilear
was born in New York City. His first professional
training was under prominent New York engraver Peter
Maverick in the 1820s, then with Asher Durand,
himself an engraver at the time. Casilear and Durand
became friends, and both worked as engravers in New
York through the 1830s. By the middle 1830s
Durand had become interested in landscape painting
through his friendship with Thomas Cole. Durand, in
turn, drew Casilear's attention to painting. By 1840
Casilear's interest in art was sufficiently strong
to accompany Durand, John Frederick Kensett, and
artist Thomas P. Rossiter on a European trip during
which they sketched scenes, visited art museums, and
fostered their interest in painting.
Casilear gradually developed his talent in landscape
art, painting in the style that was later to become
known as the Hudson River School. By the middle
1850s he had entirely ceased his engraving career in
favor of painting full-time. He was elected a full
member of the National Academy of Design in 1851,
having been an associate member since 1831, and
exhibited his works there for over fifty
years. Casilear died in Saratoga Springs, New
York in 1893. Today examples of his art are in the
collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York, the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC,
and Ringwood Manor, Ringwood, NJ. Original
engraving, title "A SIBYL".
Engraved in 1847 for the American Art-Union;
after a painting by Daniel Huntington. The American
Art Union was a major force in the development and
promotion of American art. The print was reissued in
1880 by The American Art Review, the leading art
publication of the 1880s, and a devoted supporter of
the Etching Revival. This is the 1880 edition.

[FRANCE] Pierre-Antoine Lebrun
(1785-1873) French poet. Lebrun was born in
Paris. An Ode à la grande armée, mistaken at the time for the
work of Écouchard Lebrun, attracted Napoleon's attention, and
secured for the author a pension of 1200 francs. Lebrun's
plays, once famous, are now forgotten. They are: Ulysse
(1814), Marie Stuart (1820), which obtained a great success,
and Le Cid d'Andalousie (1825). Lebrun visited Greece in
1820, and on his return to Paris he published in 1822 an ode
on the death of Napoleon, which cost him his pension. In 1825
he was the guest of Sir Walter Scott at Abbotsford. The
coronation of Charles X in that year inspired the verses
entitled La Vallée de Champrosay, which have, perhaps, done
more to secure his fame than his more ambitious
attempts. In 1828 appeared his most important poem, Le
Voyage en Grèce, and in the same year he was elected to the
Academy. The revolution of 1830 opened up for him a public
career; in 1831 he was made director of the Imprimerie Royale,
and subsequently filled with distinction other public offices,
becoming senator in 1853. ALS, Paris, 1832, 2pp,

that various tribes of the Indians inhabit greater of less
portions of these States; which shut out the white population
from thier Territory, and thus cut off from improvement so much
of these States as the Indian country embraces. All the States
feel a strong and very natural desire to increase thier
population; and from this cause, more than from any other single

He authored several books on Mormans, including "The Mormon Way" self-published in 1929. Rice was a theologan of another denomination who traveled and lived in Utah in the early twentieth century. He wrote a curious and interesting account from a non-Mormon perspective. In 1901 the first Presbyterian church building was dedicated. It served the community until it was sold to the Roman Catholic church in 1950. The assignment was difficult for the ministers as they received little support from the Mormon community. Reverend Clayton Rice came to the area in 1908 and used friendliness and community activity as tools to break into Dixie. He loved the desert and enjoyed the people on a social level. He directed plays, coached baseball, taught violin and trained debaters. He was well received, but only a handful attended his sermons. Other ministers also found little success. 225. [FILM] Bruce
Bennett (1906-2007) American
actor and Olympic silver medalist shot putter. During
the 1930s, he went by his real name, Herman Brix. He
moved to Los Angeles in 1929 after being invited to compete
for the Los Angeles Athletic Club and befriended actor
Douglas Fairbanks Jr., who arranged a screen test for him at
Paramount. In 1931, MGM, adapting author Edgar Rice
Burroughs's popular Tarzan adventures for the screen,
selected Herman Brix to play the title character.
Unfortunately, Brix broke his shoulder filming the 1931
football movie Touchdown, which also prevented his entry
into the 1932 Olympics, still holding the world record for
shot put. Swimming champion Johnny Weissmuller replaced Brix
and became a major star. After Ashton Dearholt convinced
Burroughs to allow him to form Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises,
Inc., and make a Tarzan serial film, Dearholt cast Brix in
the lead. Pressbook copy has it that Burroughs made the
choice himself, but, in fact, in his biography, Brix
confirmed that Burroughs never even saw him until after the
contract was signed, and then only briefly. The film was
begun on location in Guatemala, under rugged conditions
(jungle diseases and cash shortages were frequent). Brix did
his own stunts, including a fall to rocky cliffs below. The
Washington Post quoted Gabe Essoe's passage from his book
Tarzan of the Movies: "Brix's portrayal was the only time
between the silents and the 1960s that Tarzan was accurately
depicted in films. Brief ALS, 2001 mentioning he is 95

279. [MUSIC- THEATRE] Gertrude "Gertie" Millar (later Countess of Dudley) (1879-1952) English actress and singer of the early 20th century, known for her performances in Edwardian musical comedies. Beginning her career at age 13, Millar was a prominent star of musical comedies for two decades. She married composer Lionel Monckton, who composed many of her shows and songs that she made famous. After Monckton died in 1924, Millar married the 2nd Earl of Dudley. As a child, Millar performed in London pantomimes, beginning with Babes in the Wood at the St. James Theatre in Manchester, at the age of 13. She started out as a singer and dancer in the music halls of Yorkshire. Later, she moved to London where she was soon earning good notices and better pay appearing in variety show bills. By 1897, she was playing the role of Phyllis Crosby in A Game of Cards at Shodfriars Hall, Boston, England. Next she toured in The New Barmaid in the role of Dora; in The Silver Lining; and as Sadie Pinkhose, the "other woman", in The Lady Detective. In 1899, she played Dandini in Cinderella at the Grand Theatre, Fulham. In the new century, she starred in a series of hit musical comedies produced by George Edwardes. In 1900, she played Isabel Blythe in the touring production of The Messenger Boy. Edwardes's next show was The Toreador in 1901 at the Gaiety Theatre in London. Lionel Monckton, one of the show's composers, had seen Millar in The Messenger Boy and requested that she be given the role of the bridesmaid Cora in the new musical, singing "Keep Off the Grass". She made the song popular and earned a second song, "Captivating Cora", and a third, "I'm not a simple little girl". These hits, and her featured role in A Country Girl (1902), established Millar in London. The Gaiety Theatre closed for renovations in 1902, and the last show at the old theatre was The Linkman; or, Gaiety Memories. Millar starred as Morgiana. She married Monckton in 1902, and he continued to write hit songs for her in subsequent shows. Millar became one of the most photographed women of the Edwardian period. She had top billing as the Hon. Violet Anstruther in The Orchid, the show that opened the new Gaiety (1903; introducing the songs "Little Mary", "Liza Ann", and "Come with me to the zoo"). She starred as Rosalie in The Spring Chicken (1905; singing "Alice sit by the fire" and "The Delights of London") and as Lally in The New Aladdin (1906). She next starred as Mitzi in The Girls of Gottenberg (1907; singing the duet "Two Little Sausages", with Edmund Payne, and the Wagnerian parody "Rhinegold"). Soon afterwards, Edwardes cast her as Franzi at the Hicks Theatre in the English-language production of Ein Walzertraum (A Waltz Dream, 1908) by Oscar Straus. Although Millar was able to sell the light musical comedy songs composed for her at the Gaiety, Oscar Straus's music was too demanding for her small voice, and she was sent to New York to star in the Broadway production of The Girls of Gottenberg. After she returned to London, some of Millar's biggest successes were still in front of her. They included the title role of the hit Gaiety musical, Our Miss Gibbs (1909), with Millar introducing the songs "Moonstruck", "Yorkshire", and "Our farm", all written for her by Monckton. Monckton and Millar then moved to Edwardes' newest theatre, the Adelphi, where she played the title role, Prudence Pym, in another international hit, The Quaker Girl (1910). In this, she popularised the songs "The Quaker Girl", "The Little Grey Bonnet", and "Tony from America". After this, she returned to continental operetta, playing Lady Babby in Edwardes's English language version of Franz Lehár's Zigeunerliebe (Gipsy Love, 1912) at Daly's Theatre . In this role, the musical demands were light and the show was a moderate success. She returned to the Adelphi to play Nancy Joyce in The Dancing Mistress (1912), and back at Daly's she played Kitty Kent in The Marriage Market (1913). This was followed by the role of Nan in a major revival of A Country Girl (1914). She also played Sallie Denbigh in The House of Bondage, a 1914 film. After graduating at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1825, he acted as assistant professor there for some time, and as a lieutenant in the corps of engineers he was engaged for a short time in the erection of coastal fortifications. He occupied the post of professor of natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1828 to 1841 and again from 1842 to 1843. He spent the years 1836 to 1838 in Europe on behalf of the trustees of what, in 1848, was to become Girard College. Abroad, he examined European systems of education and, on his return, published a very valuable report. In 1843, on the death of Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler, he was appointed superintendent of the United States coast survey. He succeeded in impressing the United States Congress with a sense of the great value of this work and by means of the liberal aid it granted, he carried out a singularly comprehensive plan with great ability and most satisfactory results. By a skillful division of labour, and by the erection of numerous observing stations, the mapping out of the whole coast was completed. 314. [FRANCE] Nicolas de Lamoignon - Nicolas Lamoignon-Bâville (1648-1724) was a French official said to have been accused by Voltaire of instigating the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He made himself famous by the measures he adopted against the Protestants, and by the manner in which he associated himself with the religious policy of Louvois, of which the revocation of the Edict of Nantes was the culminating point. But it is without proof that Voltaire accused him of having instigated this revocation. "I never counselled the revocation of the Edict of Nantes", he wrote to his brother in 1708. On the contrary he considered that "in religion hearts must be attacked, for it is there that it resides", and immediately after the revocation he sent for Bourdaloue to come and evangelize the Protestants of Montpellier. From 1702 to 1704 he helped in the repression of the uprising of the Camisards, occasioned in the Cevennes by English and Calvinistic influences.Document Signed, 1710, 4-pages, 8-1/4 x 12". (1912-1999) Russian-American magazine editor, publisher,
painter, photographer, and sculptor. He held senior artistic
positions during his 32 years at Condé Nast Publications. When
his father took a post advising the Soviet government, the
family moved to Moscow. Life there became difficult, and his
father secured permission from Lenin and the Politburo to take
his son to London in 1921. Young Liberman was educated in
Russia, England, and France, where he took up life as a "White
Émigré" in Paris. He began his publishing career in
Paris with the early pictorial magazine Vu, where he worked
under Lucien Vogel and with photographers such as Brassaï,
André Kertész, and Robert Capa. After emigrating to New York
in 1941, he began working for Condé Nast Publications, rising
to the position of editorial director, which he held from
1962-1994. Only in the 1950s did Liberman take up painting
and, later, metal sculpture. His highly recognizable
sculptures are assembled from industrial objects (segments of
steel I-beams, pipes, drums, and such), often painted in
uniform bright colors. Prominent examples of his work are in

[ART] Jacques Villon
(1875 - 1963) A painter and printmaker, Villon was known for his
Cubist-style works, and is especially noted by art historians
for "his creation of a purely graphic language for Cubism. He
first came to the attention of the American public when his work
was included in the 1913 New York Armory Show, which introduced
modernism to the United Sates. All of his work sold at this
exhibition. He was from a cultured family in the Normandy region
of France, and was much influenced by his maternal grandfather,
Emile Nicolle, who gave him early artistic training. Villon was
born with the name of Gaston Emile Duchamp, and was the older
brother of artists Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Marcel Duchamp and
Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Honoring the French medieval poet,
François Villon, and so as not to be confused artistically with
his siblings, he changed his name to Jacques Villon. Jacques
Villon died in his studio on June 9, 1963, and three years
later, Marcel Duchamp, his last surviving brother, organized an
exhibition of his work, which was held at the Musée National
d'Art Moderne in Paris. In 1922 Villon was commissioned by the
Galerie Bernheim-Jeune to produce a series of color aquatints
after 38 major 19th and 20th century paintings. These included
works after Braque, Matisse, Renoir, Manet, Picasso, Cezanne,
Dufy, Modigliani, Bonnard and numerous others. Villon
collaborated with these master artists and signed these prints
so that they provided the public with access to works which
otherwise would not be available. Color aquatint, signed in the

Georges Braque, mat opening size 25-1/2 x 9 in. Framed. Not

339. [ART] André Berne-Joffroy (1915-2007) Former Director of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Iimportant art critic in France. He was responsible for many of the important Paris exhibitions of modern art during the 1950-1980 era. He is also credited with the rediscovery of the Italian artist Michelangelo Caravaggio [1571-1610], who had a formative influence on the Baroque school of painting. Infamous while he lived, Caravaggio was forgotten almost immediately after his death, and it was only in the 20th century that his importance to the development of Western art was rediscovered. Despite this, his influence on the new Baroque style that eventually emerged from the ruins of Mannerism, was profound. It can be seen directly or indirectly in the work of Rubens, Jusepe de Ribera, Bernini, and Rembrandt , and artists in the following generation heavily under his influence were called the "Caravaggisti" or "Caravagesques", as well as Tenebrists or "Tenebrosi" ("shadowists"). Andre Berne-Joffroy, said of him: "What begins in the work of Caravaggio is, quite simply, modern painting." Offered here are 23 manuscript pages written by Berne-Joffroy [UNSIGNED]. He also aimed at introducing the Roman Rite in Paris and was progressing favorably in this direction, when he was assassinated by an interdicted priest named Jean-Louis Verger, who openly admitted to the crime. [ART] WALT
KUHN
(1877-1949),
American painter. After
studying in many
European countries, he
helped organize the
famous Armory Show
(International
Exhibition of Modern
Art, New York City,
1913). He is noted
chiefly for his vigorous
studies of circus
performers, chorines,
and trapeze athletes.
His Blue Clown (1931,
Whitney Museum, New York
City) is the most
popular example of his
work. He also did a
number of brilliant
still lifes, as well as
designs for musical
reviews. Kuhn helped
introduce the techniques
and theories of modern
art to the American
public and to many
American artists.
Offered here are

sheets. The majority of
the letters were written
from Ogunquit,
Maine where the Kuhn's
owned a home with a
studio. At the end of
1948 he had a nervous
breakdown. In some of
his letters he starts to
wonder about his mental
abilities. Walts'
letters run the
gamut of
town gossip to art
gossip mentioning names
of artists who summered
in Ogunquit, war
activity near Ogunquit
off Boone Island,
descriptions of the
areas where he paints,
his feelings about
tourists, how his
painting is going, his
art patrons and dealers.
A Colliers article about
Walts' paintings is
mentioned in a few
letters and a copy of
the article goes with
the group. One letter is

370. [FRANCE] Adhémar Jean Claude Barré de Saint-Venant (1797-1886) French mechanician and mathematician who contributed to early stress analysis and also developed the one-dimensional unsteady open channel flow shallow water equations or Saint-Venant equations that are a fundamental set of equations used in modern hydraulic engineering . Although his surname was Barré de Saint-Venant in non-French mathematical literature he is known simply as Saint-Venant. His name is also associated with Saint-Venant's principle of statically equivalent systems of load, Saint-Venant's theorem and for Saint-Venant's compatibility condition, the integrability conditions for a symmetric tensor field to be a strain. In 1843 he published the correct derivation of the Navier-Stokes equations for a viscous flow and was the first to "properly identify the coefficient of viscosity and its role as a multiplying factor for the velocity gradients in the flow". Although he published before Stokes the equations do not bear his name. In 1868, at 71 years old, he was elected to succeed Poncelet in the mechanics section of the Académie des Sciences. In 1869 he was given the title 'Count' (comte) by Pope Pius IX. ALS, 1861, 2pp, approx. 5-1/4 x 8-1/4". There is a tear coming up from botton edge that touches the signature but no loss of paper. 373. [REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE] COREY ALLEN (1934-2010) American Actor/Director. He began acting while attending UCLA. A proponent of "The Method," Allen found himself in the company of several like-minded young actors in his first film of consequence, (1955) Allen played Buzz in the film REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, the high-school ringleader who dies horribly during the "chickin run" with JAMES DEAN. Though Buzz became a comparatively sympathetic character before his screen demise, producers tended to think of Allen as a surly, punkish type, and cast him accordingly. Frustrated with being typecast, Allen turned director in 1962. Corey Allen's theatrical-film directorial efforts have hardly been Oscar calibre (have you seen The Erotic Adventures of Pinocchio?), but his TV work has proven quite impressive, enough so to earn him an Emmy award. 383. PEGGY STEWART (1923- ) American Actress. Her family moved to California in the mid '30s, where she made the acquaintance of character actor Henry O'Neill. Aware that Paramount Pictures was looking for a new face to play the part of Joel McCrea's and Frances Dee's daughter in Wells Fargo (1936), O'Neill recommended Stewart. The assignment led to numerous other roles for the teenaged actress, who by the end of 1940 was not only established in Hollywood but the wife of actor Don "Red" Barry (Stewart was also the sister-in-law of another actor, Wayne Morris). At about the time her marriage was breaking up in 1944, Stewart signed with Republic Studios, where, starting with Tucson Raiders (1944), she became resident leading lady for many of Republic's western stars. She also appeared in serials at Republic but preferred westerns because the shooting schedules were shorter and she was able to wear a more varied wardrobe. [ART] Original 18th century
portrait of John Colet (1467-1519)
the English churchman and educational pioneer. Colet
was an English scholar, Renaissance humanist, theologian, and
Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. Colet wanted people to see
the scripture as their guide through life. Furthermore, he
wanted to restore theology and rejuvenate Christianity. Colet is
an important early leader of Christian humanism as he linked
humanism and reform. Colet influenced Erasmus, a key figure in
Christian humanism. During his time abroad he became acquainted
with Budaeus (Guillaume Budé) and Erasmus, and with the teaching
of Savonarola. On his return to England in 1496 he took orders
and settled at Oxford, where he lectured on the epistles of
Saint Paul, replacing the old scholastic method of
interpretation with one more in harmony with the new learning.
Due to their influences, when he arrived back in England, he
returned more than just a humanist; he returned a Christian
reformer. His methods did much to influence Erasmus, who visited
Oxford in 1498, and who later received an annuity from Colet. This original mezzotint portrait is by
Richard Houston (1721?–1775)
who was an Irish mezzotint engraver, whose career was mostly in
London. Born in Dublin about 1721, he became a pupil of
John Brooks, who was also the master of James McArdell and
Charles Spooner. He came to London about 1747, and some of his
early plates bear the address "near Drummond's at Charing
Cross". In debt to Robert Sayer the print-seller, he was
arrested and confined to the Fleet prison; according to Sayer
this in order that he might know where to find the dissipated
Houston. He was released in 1760, on the accession of George
III. As a free agent he was commissioned by Carington Bowles.

402. [ART] Original 18th century portrait of
Martin Bucer (early
German: Martin Butzer) (1491-1551) the Protestant reformer based
in Strasbourg who influenced Lutheran, Calvinist, and Anglican
doctrines and practices. Bucer was originally a member of the
Dominican Order, but after meeting and being influenced by
Martin Luther in 1518 he arranged for his monastic vows to be
annulled. He then began to work for the Reformation, with the
support of Franz von Sickingen. Bucer's efforts to reform the
church in Wissembourg resulted in his excommunication from the
Roman Catholic Church, and he was forced to flee to Strasbourg.
There he joined a team of reformers which included Matthew Zell,
Wolfgang Capito, and Caspar Hedio. He acted as a mediator
between the two leading reformers, Martin Luther and Huldrych
Zwingli, who differed on the doctrine of the eucharist. Later,
Bucer sought agreement on common articles of faith such as the
Tetrapolitan Confession and the Wittenberg Concord, working
closely with Philipp Melanchthon on the latter. Bucer believed
that the Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire could be convinced
to join the Reformation. Through a series of conferences
organised by Charles V, he tried to unite Protestants and
Catholics to create a German national church separate from Rome.
He did not achieve this, as political events led to the
Schmalkaldic War and the retreat of Protestantism within the
Empire. In 1548, Bucer was persuaded, under duress, to sign the
Augsburg Interim, which imposed certain forms of Catholic
worship. However, he continued to promote reforms until the city
of Strasbourg accepted the Interim, and forced him to leave. In
1549, Bucer was exiled to England, where, under the guidance of
Thomas Cranmer, he was able to influence the second revision of
the Book of Common Prayer. He died in Cambridge, England, at the
age of 59. Although his ministry did not lead to the formation
of a new denomination, many Protestant denominations have
claimed him as one of their own. He is remembered as an early
pioneer of ecumenism. This
original mezzotint portrait is by Richard
Houston (1721?–1775) who was an
Irish mezzotint engraver, whose career was mostly in
London. Born in Dublin about 1721, he became a pupil of
John Brooks, who was also the master of James McArdell and
