10. [FRANCE] Printed DECRET De La Convention Nationale, Feb. 5, 1794, 3-pages, about 7-3/4 x 8-1/2. This is from the period know as The Reign of Terror on the topic of Slavery. On first page it names General Pichegru(e) in Chief of Northern Army. Jean-Charles Pichegru (1761 - 1804) French general and political figure of the French Revolution and Revolutionary Wars. He briefly served in the American Revolutionary War. In December 1793 Hoche was arrested, probably owing to his colleague's denounciations, and Pichegru became commander-in-chief of the army of the Rhine-and-Moselle, then he was summoned to succeed Jourdan in the army of the North in February 1794, subsequently fighting three major campaigns of one year (see: French Revolutionary Wars: Campaigns of 1794). The forces of the Kingdom of Great Britain, the Dutch Republic and Habsburg Austria held a strong position along the Sambre to the North Sea. He planned a coup d'état known as the Coup of 18 Fructidor, but was arrested, and with fourteen others deported to Cayenne, French Guiana, in 1797. He and seven others escaped and fled to Paramaribo. The gouverneur De Friderici allowed them to get on board on a ship to the United States. Then he went to London, serving on General Aleksandr Rimsky-Korsakov's staff in the campaign of 1799. He went to Paris in August 1803 with Georges Cadoudal to head a Royalist uprising against the First Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte . Betrayed by a friend, he was arrested on 28 February 1804, and was later found strangled in prison, but it could also have been a suicide. The Reign of Terror (September 5, 1793 to July 28, 1794), also known simply as The Terror (French: la Terreur), was a period of violence that occurred after the onset of the French Revolution, incited by conflict between rival political factions, the Girondins and the Jacobins, and marked by mass executions of "enemies of the revolution." The guillotine (called the "National Razor") became the symbol of the revolutionary cause, strengthened by a string of executions, including King Louis XVI, and Marie Antoinette. Other than a damp stain along bottom edge this is in excellent condition. Rare as such!............100-150

17. Blanche Butler Ames
(1847-1939) was the wife of Adelbert Ames, a decorated general
of the American Civil War and Senator and Governor of
Mississippi during Reconstruction. Blanche Butler was
born in Lowell, Massachusetts, the second child and only
daughter of Sarah Jones and Benjamin Franklin Butler,
who would also serve as a general in the Civil War. She
attended school in Lowell until she was sent to the Academy of
the Visitation in Washington, D.C. at age 13, where she
described the sectional tension between northern and southern
students on the eve of the Civil War. Blanche met
Adelbert Ames, who had served under her father in the Army of
the James, while he was serving as Senator from Mississippi
during Reconstruction. They married at Saint Anne's Episcopal
Church in Lowell, the same church where her parents were wed,
on July 21, 1870, and had six children: Butler, Edith, Sarah,
Blanche, Adelbert, Jr., and Jessie. When her husband was
elected Governor of Mississippi in 1873, Blanche accompanied
him, and wrote a series of letters detailing her experiences
as a Northern woman living in the South during Reconstruction.
After Adelbert resigned under pressure in 1876, the Ames
family returned to Lowell to pursue business interests, where
they remained for much the rest of their lives. After
her husband's death in 1933, Mrs. Ames compiled a collection
of their letters, released by the family as Chronicles from
the Nineteenth Century: Family Letters of Blanche Butler and
Adelbert Ames in 1957. She died at the Ames winter home in
Ormond Beach, Florida, on December 26, 1939, at the age of 92,
and is buried beside her husband and their children at the
Hildreth family cemetery in Lowell, across from her parents
and siblings. ALS, on Colonial Dames of New

19. [MUSIC] Milton Ebbins (1912–2008)
Film executive, songwriter ("Yale Blues", "Basic Boogie")
and composer. Ebbins helped produce JFK’s 1961 Inaugural
Ball and the subsequent 1962 JFK Anniversary Gala. In May of
1962, Ebbins escorted a very late Marilyn Monroe to Madison
Square Garden where she famously — and breathlessly — sang
“Happy Birthday, Mr. President.” He was also the man that
Lawford called after speaking to Monroe the night of her
death in August of 1962. Ebbins was one of the few allowed
inside the White House after the JFK assassination. As the
link between Washington and Hollywood, Ebbins helped Kennedy
family patriarch and former ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy
navigate through the movie business, not only keeping him
apprised of his son-in-law’s career moves but at one point
advising him against purchasing United Artists’ movie
studio. At the time of his death, Ebbins was working with
his friend, actor Bill Paxton, on an HBO project about the
Kennedy assassination. Ebbins music career began in 1936, he
formed his own orchestra, then became music director at CBS,
and went to New York in 1938, joining an advertising
agency's radio department. He also had been a road manager
for the Jack Jenny and Count Basie orchestras, and then a
personal manager. He left his career as bandleader and
became a talent manager, rising to become one of Hollywood’s
top personal managers, guiding the careers of Count Basie,
Sarah Vaughn, Billy Eckstine and singer Vic Damone. Because
of Ebbins’ musical background and his adeptness at arranging
scores, he had a knack for picking hit songs for his
clients. He also represented actresses Elizabeth Montgomery
and Patty Duke, comedian Mort Sahl and actor Peter Lawford,
who Ebbins managed for 35 years. TLS, 1963, 1p.

Liberal politician. He held the posts, in turn, of Solicitor

22. [ART] Mary Harriman Rumsey [1881-1934] founder of The Junior League for the Promotion of Settlement Movements, later known as the Junior League of the City of New York of the Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. Mary was the daughter of railroad magnate, E.H. Harriman and sister to W. Averell Harriman, former New York State Governor and United States Diplomat. TLS, 1922, 2pp, to the artist Walt Kuhn. She begins with "At the eleventh hour, in going over my finances, I find that I am "more broke" than I thought I was, and will be so until the first of October. I could, possibly, spare $2000.00, if the worst came to worst, between now and then..." It is unclear as to what show she is referring to. The handwriting on the original envelope is that of Walt Kuhn [stamp not present]. Mary was a most interesting person. She was the oldest of six children to railroad industrialist, E.H. Harriman and his wife Mary Averell Harriman. Mary attended Barnard College where she specialized in Sociology. In 1933, then President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Mary to chair the Consumer Advisory Board (CAB) of the National Recovery Administration (NRA), the first government consumer rights group. Despite her inexperience, Mary's work with farming cooperatives and belief in the power of cooperation would come to be her greatest assets. Mary would promote the formation of consumer groups across the nation and encouraged these groups to report their grievances to her office. Mary Rumsey's work as chair of the CAB was short-lived as she died on December 18, 1934 from injuries sustained a month earlier in a horseback riding accident. Mary Rumsey's legacy to New Deal reforms would be continued by her younger brother, W. Averell Harriman. Averell was encouraged by his older sister to leave his finance job and join her and their friends, the Roosevelts, to advance the goals of the New Deal. Averell joined the NRA, marking the beginning of his political career. In 1918, Mary joined the board of the Maternity Center Association, which had appointed Frances Perkins as its unpaid executive secretary, thus deepening a friendship and professional partnership that would last until Mary's death. Despite her enthusiasm and support for her housemate's [Frances Perkins] important work, Mary had no intention of being a "cabinet wife." She intended to make her own impact. During the administration's first year in office, she founded Today magazine, a Washington weekly which later acquired News Week to become the publication we know today as Newsweek. None other than FDR himself was the magazine's first subscriber. A typical party given by Mary might include Will Rogers, Eleanor Roosevelt, Margaret Bourke White, and General Douglas MacArthur at the same table with an unknown Appalachian folk singer. Rare! 23. [FOOTBALL] Daniel Alden Reed (1875-1959) American football player, coach, and U.S. Representative from the state of New York. Born in Sheridan, New York, he graduated from Cornell University in 1898, where he was a member of the Quill and Dagger society. Reed was attorney for the excise department of New York from 1903 to 1909. He served in the House of Representatives as a Republican from 1919 until his death in Washington, D.C., on February 19, 1959. After playing football at Cornell University, Reed coached at the University of Cincinnati, Pennsylvania State University , and his alma mater. From 1899 to 1900 he coached at Cincinnati, and guided the Bearcats to a 8-1 record. He coached at Penn State in 1903, compiling a 5-3 record. From 1910 to 1911, he was the head coach at Cornell, where he led that team to a 12-5-1 record. His career record is 25-14-2. During his years in Congress, Reed was one of the most conservative members of the New York delegation. Autograph Letter Signed, Hotel Fulton, New York, 1905, 7-1/2 pages, plus cover. 24. [INVENTOR] The Reverend Robert Willis (1800-1875) English academic. He was the first Cambridge professor to win widespread recognition as a mechanical engineer, and first set the scientific study of vowels on a respectable foundation, but now best remembered for his extensive architectural writings, including a 4-volume treatise on the architecture of the University of Cambridge. Willis's theory of vowel production assumed a close correspondence between vowel production and the production of musical notes using an organ: the lung acted as a bellows, the vocal folds acted as the reed, and the mouth cavity acted as the organ pipe. Different vowels corresponded to mouth cavities(/organ pipes) of different lengths, which were independent of the properties or vibrations of the vocal folds(/reed). Willis's 1830 paper On vowel sounds, and on reed-organ pipes is usually given as the reference for this theory, and is often contrasted with Wheatstone's "harmonic" theory of vowel production.Russell devotes two chapters to the discussion of these two theories in his 1928 book on The Vowel , and Willis and Wheatstone figure prominently in the discussion of vowel theories given by Chiba and Kajiyama in their 1941 book of the same name. ALS, Cambridge, 1851, 2pp. He returns something which he fears he has kept too long / have looked on them carefully and made necessary alterations / return proofs of my plates which are very well executed, etc. VG. 25. Charles Sackville, 2nd Duke of Dorset PC (1711-1769) British nobleman, politician, and cricketer. He was styled Lord Buckhurst from 1711 to 1720 and Earl of Middlesex from 1720 to 1765. He was bitterly opposed, politically, to his father, and ventured to oppose his candidates in the boroughs he controlled. He became an ally of Frederick, Prince of Wales. In the 1734 election, he was defeated at Kent, but was returned as Member of Parliament for East Grinstead. He was appointed Captain of Walmer Castle in September. He continued to sit for East Grinstead until 26 May 1741, when he accepted the office of High Steward of the Honour of Otford. He was returned for Sussex in a by-election in 1742, and for Old Sarum at the 1747 election. He served as a Lord of the Treasury from 1743 until 1747, and was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Sussex on 20 October 1745. He was appointed Master of the Horse to the Prince of Wales in 1747, and served until Frederick's death in 1751. Middlesex married Hon. Grace Boyle, daughter and heir of Richard Boyle, 2nd Viscount Shannon, on 30 October 1744, but they had no children. During the 1754 election, he unsuccessfully contested Westminster, and held no seat until the next election. He returned to the House of Commons as Member for East Grinstead from 1761 until 1765. In that year, he succeeded his father as Duke of Dorset, and also as Lord Lieutenant of Kent, and was made a Privy Councillor in 1766. However, he did not long enjoy the ducal honours. Upon his death in 1769 in London, he was succeeded by his nephew, John Sackville. ALS, Asley, June 14, 1752, 1-1/2pp. Concerns monetary matters. the Maryland bar, and was professor of law in the University
of Maryland from 1817 till 1836, when the professorship was
abolished. He then visited Europe for relaxation, and remained
abroad two years. On his return he took part in the
presidential canvass as an earnest supporter of General
William H. Harrison, and was an elector from Maryland. After
the election he settled in Philadelphia, and practised law
there till 1847, when, he went to Europe to devote himself to
the preparation of a work on the history of the world. While
in London he contributed to the "Times" a series of articles
on the political and social arrangements and economical
condition of the United States. He returned from England in
December, 1853, in order to regulate his private affairs, and
while travelling on business died from an attack of apoplexy.
He had received degrees from the universities of Gottingen and
Oxford. When entering upon his professorship he published " A
Course of Legal Study" (1817; 2d ed., 1836), which was
commended by the most eminent jurists for its plan and
execution. He also published "Legal Outlines," an epitome of
the practice and study of the law (1836); two volumes entitled
"Miscellaneous Thoughts on Men, Manners, and Things," by
"Anthony Grumbler, of Grumbleton Hall, Esq." (1837); "Viator,
or a Peep into my Note-Book" (1841), in which he discussed in
a popular style questions of law, religion, art, and
literature, and opposed the radical tendencies of American
thought; and " Legal Hints," a condensation of the ideas
relating to professional deportment contained in "A Course of
Legal Study," with the addition of some counsel to
law-students (1846). The work on which he was engaged in
England is entitled "Chronicles selected from the Originals of
Cartaphilus, the Wandering Jew." He employed the legend to
embellish an epitomized history of government and religion
since the time of Christ. Two volumes, bringing the history
down to the year 573, were issued in a striking form (London,
1853). The third volume was partly in type when the author
returned to the United States. Three other volumes had been in
great part written. Mr. Hoffman also left " Moot Court

30. [RELIGION] Pierre-Paul Guérin de Tencin (1679-1758), French ecclesiastic, was archbishop of Embrun and Lyon, and a cardinal. His sister Claudine was a spur to his career. After studying with the Oratorians in his native Grenoble, he entered the Sorbonne, where he became prior in 1702, and obtained the doctorate in 1705. He was then appointed Vicar-General of the diocese of Sens and, in 1721, accompanied Cardinal de Rohan[2] to Rome as his conclavist, to support the candidacy of Cardinal Conti (Innocent XIII), from whom he had obtained a promise to bestow the purple on the French minister Guillaume Dubois. He remained at Rome as French chargé d'affaires, with the appointment in commendam of abbot of Trois-Fontaines to support him (1739-1753), until Benedict XIII, with whom he was on cordial terms of intimacy and very influential, consecrated him Archbishop of Embrun (26 June 1724). On 22 February 1739, Guérin de Tencin was created cardinal, of the titulus of Sts. Nereus and Achilleus. He remained at Rome as French ambassador until 1742, when he took possession of the archiepiscopal see of Lyon, to which he had succeeded on 19 November 1740. Louis XV appointed him minister of state in September 1742, though he held no portfolio, and Commander of the Order of Saint-Esprit. He was overzealous in the persecution of the Jansenists, and, at the provincial synod which he held at Embrun from 16 August to 28 September, 1727, he suspended Jean Soanen, Bishop of Senez, a prelate eighty years of age, who had appealed against the Bull Unigenitus. After the death of André-Hercule Cardinal de Fleury , the prime minister to whom he owed much of his political advancement, his influence began to decrease. The death of his profligate sister in 1749, removed some of his political ambition, and in 1752 he retired to his see of Lyons. Offered here is ALS, 1735, 1p, approx. 7 x 10 in. Not translated. [THEATRE] Lee Simonson
(1888-1967, Yonkers, N.Y.)
a major force in American scenic design, discovered in his
youth what the "painters' and designers' vision could do to
revivify the theater." After graduating magna cum laude from
Harvard in 1909, he went to Paris hoping to become a mural
painter. There he formed friendships with such expatriate
Americans as writer and collector Gertrude Stein and painter
Stanton MacDonald-Wright. He also attended some of the most
experimental European theatrical productions, and when he
returned to New York in 1912, he was determined to launch
his career as a set designer. He was influential in freeing American stage design
from constraints imposed by traditional realism. ALS on

32. [CARDINAL] Jean-Sifrein Maury (1746-1817) French cardinal and Archbishop of Paris. As a politician, his wit and eloquence made him a worthy rival of Mirabeau . As a critic, he was and is considered a very able writer. Sainte-Beuve gives him the credit of discovering Father Jacques Bridayne and of giving Bossuet his rightful place as a preacher above Massillon. Manuscript Document Signed, 1813, approx. 15.5 x 9.5". Offered here is an ALS, 8 full page letter to his Bishop [not named], St James Rectory, Lancaster, August 3, 1872. One vertical fold else very good condition. RE: The entire letter is Watson disagreeing with the Bishop about the "Philadelphia School" which is not where Watson would send Theological students. He is surprised that the Bishop thinks the ability of its professors is unsurpassed; Watson says it's teaching is "low church or Evangelical", it's mind is antagonistic to the mind of the church as stated in the Book of Common Prayer, question of how "they" view the Holy Eucharist, fast, feast, Holy & saints days, daily service for the students. The Bishop is forbidding the General Seminary. Watson says the students' rooms are paid for after months of work finding the money & they would be at sea if the Bishop refuses. [ART] WALT
KUHN
(1877-1949),
American painter.
After studying in many
European countries, he
helped organize the
famous Armory Show
(International
Exhibition of Modern
Art, New York City,
1913). He is noted
chiefly for his
vigorous studies of
circus performers,
chorines, and trapeze
athletes. His Blue
Clown (1931, Whitney
Museum, New York City)
is the most popular
example of his work.
He also did a number
of brilliant still
lifes, as well as
designs for musical
reviews. Kuhn helped
introduce the
techniques and
theories of modern art
to the American public
and to many American
artists. Offered here
are twenty-seven
handwritten
letters-
twenty-five [25]
letters are from
1943, one is
1940 & the last is
1948, the year before
Walt died. Most are
two pages on 8 x 11
in. sheets. The
majority of the
letters were written
from Ogunquit,
Maine where the Kuhn's
owned a home with a
studio. At the end of
1948 he had a nervous
breakdown. In some of
his letters he starts
to wonder about his
mental abilities.
Walts' letters run the
gamut of
town gossip to art
gossip mentioning
names of artists who
summered in Ogunquit,
war activity near
Ogunquit off Boone
Island, descriptions
of the areas where he
paints, his feelings
about tourists, how
his painting is going,
his art patrons and
dealers. A Colliers
article about Walts'
paintings is mentioned
in a few letters and a
copy of the article
goes with the group.

43. [ART] RALPH
BAKSHI - American animator/draftsman.
In the late 1950s & early 1960s he worked at
CBS-Terrytoons on such series as "Heckle and Jeckle" and
"Mighty Mouse." From there he went to Famous
Studios-Paramount, where he directed countless "Casper the
Friendly Ghost" and "Little Audrey" cartoons, among
others. During the 1960s he also animated Peter Max's
commercials. When Famous Studios closed in 1967, Bakshi
went into partnership with Steve Krantz. Their first
venture was "Fritz the Cat", released in 1972. The success
of "Fritz" prompted "Heavy Traffic" [1973], a funny-sad
chronicle of life in New York's slums. Striking out on his
own, Bakshi produced the sometimes brilliant, often
disappointing "Coonskin" [1974]; also "Wizards" [1977];
"Lord of the Rings" [1978]. Ralph Bakshi occupies a
somewhat ambiguous position in the animation world. He is
one of the more original artists at work in the animated
cartoon medium. He has become a cult figure. ORIGINAL Ink

48. [ART] Winslow
Homer (1836-1910) American
landscape painter and printmaker. He is considered one
of the foremost painters in 19th-century America and a
preeminent figure in American art. Original
wood-engraving titled "WATERMELON-EATERS",
published in The American Art Journal in 1879.
Image size is approx. 5-1/8 x 7" plus large margins. The
image area is very clean; some small light spots in
margins not close to image [will not show when
matted]. Printed text on verso as usual. Often
Homer's wood-engravings are described as "after Homer",
as are most of the wood-engraved illustations during
those times. The difference between Winslow Homer,
however, the those other artists is that Homer actually
draw on the blocks, which were then cut by craftsmen and
printed. Almost all other artists, except Homer,
never drew on the blocks themselves but would make
the drawing, then someone else would copy the drawing on
the wood block and then someone else would cut the
block. This is why Winslow Homer woodengravings are
usually described as being "By" Homer, not after Homer.
You will see them described both ways today.
Winslow Homer was not only the 19th Century's most
popular artist and illustrator, but he is also considered
one of the most important American artists of all time.
The warmth and charm with which he interpreted the
American experience has enchanted generation after
generation. His best known works have been his water
colors and oil paintings; reproductions of these are
commonplace. As popular as Homer has
remained, it was not until the early 1950's that his
work as an illustrator was "rediscovered" on a large
scale. Renewed interest in his illustrations has led to
many Homer exhibitions at such places as Smith and
Bowdoin Colleges and at the National Gallery in
Washington, D.C. Institutions have increasingly
tried to acquire these rapidly decreasing treasures. The
Metropolitan Museum in New York has a large collection, as
do the fine art museums at Duke University and Dartmouth
as well as the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. It is
not surprising that private collectors are attempting to
increase their holdings of this dwindling supply. The amusing, fascinating and profitable
thing about collecting Winslow Homer illustrations is
that no one knows exactly what remains. What could be a
more interesting challenge for antique print collectors,
historians, art lovers and
investors!.............200-300

59. [FRANCE] Nicolas de Lamoignon - Nicolas Lamoignon-Bâville (1648-1724) was a French official said to have been accused by Voltaire of instigating the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He made himself famous by the measures he adopted against the Protestants, and by the manner in which he associated himself with the religious policy of Louvois, of which the revocation of the Edict of Nantes was the culminating point. But it is without proof that Voltaire accused him of having instigated this revocation. "I never counselled the revocation of the Edict of Nantes", he wrote to his brother in 1708. On the contrary he considered that "in religion hearts must be attacked, for it is there that it resides", and immediately after the revocation he sent for Bourdaloue to come and evangelize the Protestants of Montpellier. From 1702 to 1704 he helped in the repression of the uprising of the Camisards, occasioned in the Cevennes by English and Calvinistic influences.Document Signed, 1710, 4-pages, 8-1/4 x 12". the Cat", released in 1972. The success of "Fritz" prompted
"Heavy Traffic" [1973], a funny-sad chronicle of life in New
York's slums. Striking out on his own, Bakshi produced the
sometimes brilliant, often disappointing "Coonskin" [1974];
also "Wizards" [1977]; "Lord of the Rings" [1978]. Ralph
Bakshi occupies a somewhat ambiguous position in the animation

Phillippe Edouard de Verneuil (1805-1873)
French paleontologist. He was born in Paris and educated
in law, but being of independent means he was free to
follow his own inclinations, and having attended lectures
on geology by Jean-Baptiste Elie de Beaumont he was so
attracted to the subject that he devoted himself
assiduously to the study of science. He spent several
years in travel through various parts of Europe, specially
examining the geology of the Crimea, on which he published
an essay (Mem. Soc. Geol. France, 1837). He next
investigated the Devonian rocks and fossils of the
Bas-Boulonnais; and in 1839 accompanied Sedgwick and
Murchison in a study of the older Palaeozoic rocks of the
Rhenish provinces and Belgium, the palaeontological
results being communicated to the Geological Society of
London in conjunction with the Vicomte d'Archiac. When
Murchison commenced his geological examination of the
Russian empire, he requested de Verneuil to accompany him,
and the researches of the latter were incorporated in the
second volume of The Geology of Russia in Europe and the
Ural Mountains (1845). Subsequently de Verneuil paid a
visit to the United States to study the history of the
palaeozoic rocks in that country, and the results were
published in 1847 (Bull. Soc. Geol. France). In later
years he made numerous expeditions into Spain, and his
observations were embodied in Carte geologique de
l'Espagne et du Portugal (1864), prepared in association
with Edouard Collomb. In 1853 the Wollaston medal of the
Geological Society of London was awarded to him, and in
1860 he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Society.

105. [ART] George L. Rounds [1867-1921] American artist. Contrary to what AskArt says, Rounds was born in Vermont, not Sweden, and died in Chicago in 1921, not 1966. We were able to ascertain this from The Illinois Historical Art Project page. The mis-information on AskArt apparently also came from the same page although someone used the information for the artist appearing above Rounds. Took a while but we finally figured it out. Round's early death seems to explain the scarcity of his paintings as there are only about 3 or 4 auction records. Two oil paintings were offered years ago at 5000/8000 each but neither sold. Offered here is a rather nice signed watercolor contained in a great vintage Arts & Crafts picture frame. The frame could use some polish and has a few dings but it is in the original condition which is pretty good. Obviously this painting dates to 1921 or earlier. Not examined out of the frame but there are no apparent condition problems. The scans below show a reflection from the glass. Approx. 9-3/4 x 13-3/4".............600-800

American painter, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. In 1958
the Baltimore Museum of Art hosted the first solo museum exhibit
that Nesbitt was to have in his lengthy career but it was in
1964 with Nesbitt's debut at the Corcoran Gallery of Art
(Museum) in Washington D.C. that the art world truly took notice
of his bold new style with this first public exhibition of the
botanical series of paintings, drawings and prints which was to
be the series of works that was to put Lowell Nesbitt on the map
of current art world fascinations. The vast array of botanical
works most likely would not have been created had it had not
been for the beckoning of fellow artist, Robert Indiana who, in
1962 after viewing some of Lowell Nesbitt's abstract paintings
drawings and prints suggested that he attempt to make a
conversion from the abstraction which Nesbitt's career had been
focused on pre-1962, to the style of realism. Nesbitt was often
classified as a Photorealist artist, though, he fought inclusion
with this group of artists throughout his career. Nesbitt
quickly established himself as an artist who could employ both
diversity of technique and subject matter while creating
paintings, drawings and prints using studio interiors, articles
of clothing, piles of shoes, x-ray figures (Nesbitt was the
first highly recognized artist to use this subject matter) ,
caverns, ruins, landscapes, flowers, groupings of fruits and
vegetables, and electronic components (he is credited for being
the first artist to use computer parts as subject matter for his
artwork). To honor Lowell Nesbitt's monumental contributions to
the art world, in 1980, the United States Postal Service issued
four stamps based on his floral paintings. He also served as the
official artist for the NASA space flights of Apollo 9 and
Apollo 13. Lowell Nesbitt was found dead in his New York studio

174. [FRANCE] Albert Caquot (1881-1976) considered as the "best living French
engineer" during half a century. He received the "Croix de
guerre 1914-1918 (France)" (military honor) and was Grand-croix
of the Légion d'Honneur (1951). He was a member of the French
Academy of Sciences from 1934 to 1976. His accomplishments are
so numerous that it is difficult to write a brief description.
Since the item offered here ia a signed photograph of an
aeronautical dirigible, we will concentrate on him as an
aeronautical engineer during the First and Second World Wars.
Albert Caquot's contributions to aeronautics are priceless, from
the design of the "Caquot dirigible" to the launching of
technical innovations at the new French Aviation Ministry, where
he created several Fluid Mechanics Institutes that still exist
today. Marcel Dassault , who was charged by Albert Caquot to
develop several major aeronautical projects at the beginning of
his career, wrote about him: "He was one of the best engineers
than aeronautics ever had. He was visionary and ahead of his
time. He led aeronautical innovations for forty years". As early
as 1901, already visionary, he performed his military service in
an airship unit of the French army. At the beginning of First
World War, he was mobilised with the 40e Compagnie d'Aérostiers
equipped with Drachen type airships as first lieutenant. In
1914, he designed a new sausage-shaped dirigible equipped with
three air-filled lobes spaced evenly around the tail as
stablizers, and moved the inner air balloonette from the rear to
the underside of the nose, separate from the main gas envelope.
The Caquot was able to hold in 90 km/h winds and remain
horizontal. During three years, France manufactured "Caquot
dirigibles" for all the allied forces, including English and
United States armies. The United States also manufactured nearly
a thousand "Caquot R balloons" in 1918-1919. This balloon gave
to France and its allies an advantage in military observation
which significantly contributed to the allies' supremacy in
aviation and eventually to the final victory. In January 1918,
Georges Clémenceau named him technical director of the entire
military aviation. In 1919, Albert Caquot proposed the creation
of the French aeronautical museum (today called Musée de l'Air
et de l'Espace, in Le Bourget). This museum is the oldest
aeronautical museum in the world. Signed

World's Columbian Exposition. From 1893 to 1895 the Philadelphia

detailing exhibits of the fine art from participating countries

Bibesco and the French actress Andree Mery
(1876-1968). Two pages, set to expire 31 May 1952. Approx.
6-3/4 x 9-3/4". VG. Prince Antoine
Bibesco (1878 –
September 2, 1951) Romanian aristocrat, lawyer, diplomat
and writer. As a young man, his mother, Princess Hélène
Bibesco's celebrated Paris salon gave him the opportunity to
meet Charles Gounod, Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saëns,
Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Aristide Maillol, Anatole
France and Marcel Proust among many other notables. Both his
father and mother commissioned artworks and music (most
notably Edgar Degas and George Enescu) and Antoine continued
this family tradition, particularly through his friendship
with Vuillard. Marcel Proust became a lifelong friend and
shared a secret language in which Marcel was Lecram and the
Bibescos were Ocsebib. Antoine made a concerted effort to have
Proust's Du Côté de Chez Swann (in which, it is said, Bibesco
was the model for Robert de St. Loup) published by André Gide
and the Nouvelle Revue Française, but failed in that effort.
Toward the end of Proust's life, Bibesco, who was a great
raconteur, was an outside ear for the reclusive writer. Later
he published Letters of Marcel Proust to Antoine Bibesco.
Bibesco, though not a prolific writer, was the author of a
number of plays in French and had at least one American
success. In 1930 his play Ladies All was performed on
Broadway at the Morosco Theatre, running for 140 performances.
He also translated Weekend by Noël Coward and Le Domaine
by John Galsworthy into French. He
married Elizabeth Asquith, daughter of the former Prime
Minister ofr Great Britain. The marriage took place at St.
Margaret's, Westminster on April 29, 1919. It was the society
event of the year, attended by everyone from Queen Alexandra
to George Bernard Shaw. Apparently marriage did not change
Antoine's womanizing ways. Rebecca West (with whom he had a
short affair in 1927) called him "a boudoir athlete". While
attending a party at the French embassy in London and looking
around the room, West realized that every woman in attendance
had been his mistress at one time or another. Antoine
continued his diplomatic career in Washington, D.C.
(1920–1926) as Minister of the Romanian Legation (the present
Embassy of Romania in Washington, D.C. was first used as such
during his tenure) and in Madrid (1927–1931). In 1936, after
Romanian Prime Minister Gheorghe Tătărescu removed Nicolae
Titulescu as Foreign Minister and recalled nearly all
Romania's diplomats, Prince Bibesco had the unenviable
responsibility of reassuring England and France that Romania
was not slipping into the grip of fascism. The World War II
years were spent in Romania where his wife died (in 1945) and
when, after the war, his estates were confiscated by the
communists he left his country, never to return. Enid Bagnold,
in her autobiography, tells of unwittingly smuggling silver
across the English Channel for him after the war. He died in
1951, only a few months after signing this document,
and was buried in Paris. RARE! ..................200-300

Unfortunately, he broke his shoulder filming the 1931 football movie Touchdown, which also prevented his entry into the 1932 Olympics, still holding the world record for shot put. Swimming champion Johnny Weissmuller replaced him and became a major star. Bennett appeared in many films in the 1940s and early 1950s, including Sahara (1943) with Humphrey Bogart, Mildred Pierce (1945) with Joan Crawford, Nora Prentiss (1947) with Ann Sheridan, Dark Passage (1947) with Bogart and Lauren Bacall, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) with Bogart and Walter Huston, Mystery Street (1950), Sudden Fear (1952) with Joan Crawford and Gloria Grahame, and Strategic Air Command (1955) with James Stewart. [ART] André Berne-Joffroy (1915-2007) Former Director of the
Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Iimportant art critic in France.
He was responsible for many of the important Paris exhibitions
of modern art during the 1950-1980 era. He is also credited with
the rediscovery of the Italian artist Michelangelo Caravaggio
[1571-1610], who had a formative influence on the Baroque school
of painting. Infamous while he lived, Caravaggio was forgotten
almost immediately after his death, and it was only in the 20th
century that his importance to the development of Western art
was rediscovered. Despite this, his influence on the new Baroque
style that eventually emerged from the ruins of Mannerism, was
profound. It can be seen directly or indirectly in the work of
Rubens, Jusepe de Ribera, Bernini, and Rembrandt , and artists
in the following generation heavily under his influence were
called the "Caravaggisti" or "Caravagesques", as well as
Tenebrists or "Tenebrosi" ("shadowists"). Andre Berne-Joffroy,
said of him: "What begins in the work of Caravaggio is, quite
simply, modern painting." Offered here are approx. 60 manuscript

Under the command of Captain Philemon Pownoll, he took General John Burgoyne to America in the spring of 1776. In October Pellew, together with another midshipman, Brown, was detached, under Lieutenant Dacres, for service in the Carleton tender on Lake Champlain. During the Battle of Valcour Island on 11 October, Dacres and Brown were both severely wounded, and the command devolved on Pellew, who, by his personal gallantry, extricated the vessel from a position of great danger. As a reward for his service he was immediately appointed to command the Carleton. In December Lord Howe wrote, promising him a commission as lieutenant when he could reach New York, and in the following January Lord Sandwich wrote promising to promote him when he came to England. In the summer of 1777 Pellew, with a small party of seamen, was attached to the army under Burgoyne, was present in the fighting at Saratoga , where his youngest brother, John, was killed. 249. [LAW] Roger Minott Sherman (1773-1844) brother of the distinguished Roger Sherman. After graduation he began the study of law in Windsor, under the direction of the Honorable Oliver Ellsworth, and at the same time taught an academy. After about two years he removed to the Litchfield Law School, where he continued his studies with the Honorable Tapping Reeve, while teaching a common school. In February, 1795, he was elected a tutor at Yale College, and on March 12 began his duties succeeding James Gould, of the Class of 1791, in the instruction of the sophomore (2nd year) class, and at the same time continuing the study of law with the Roger Sherman's son-in-law, Honorable Simeon Baldwin (Yale 1781). He united with the church in Yale College by profession of his faith on May 1, 1796, and ever after made the advancement of the interests of religion a prime object. His eminence in his profession was early acknowledged, and his influence exerted in other relations. He represented the town in the General Assembly in the two sessions of 1798. It is believed that he argued more causes than any other lawyer who practiced in Connecticut during the first half of the nineteenth century. He did comparatively little office-business, but devoted his time to the trial of causes in court, and he also for more than twenty-five years attended the Legislature as an advocate in cases pending before that body. He was deeply interested in the administration of justice as provided for by legislative enactment, and many of the statutes of the State in the Department of municipal law during his active life were drawn up and their passage procured by him. In 1814, he was elected to the Connecticut Governor's Council, and continued in that office until May, 1818, when the constitution of the State was altered. During this time he declined a nomination to the United States Congress. In 1814, he was appointed a delegate to the Hartford Convention , in the proceedings of which he took an active part. He had been actively interested also in the steps preliminary to the call of the Convention, and was the author of the Report to the Connecticut Legislature, of the Committee which had recommended the appointment of delegates. After the death of Yale College President Timothy Dwight in 1817, he was considered by some as a candidate for the presidency of Yale. There is no doubt that Mr. Sherman's rank as a lawyer was among the very first in the country, --to be compared with that of Jeremiah Mason and Daniel Webster. 259. [VERMONT] Benj. Swan (1762-1839) an
interesting Vermont person. Known as Major Ben Swan, was born
in Worcester, Mass. At Worcester and in Boston, Benjamin
received a most thorough mercantile education in the house of
Messrs. Samuel & Stephen Salisbury, a firm whose standing
and credit for a series of years gave them the highest
reputation in the commercial community, both in Europe and
America. Mr. Swan was for some time in a mercantile house in
Montreal, where he became quite thoroughly versed in the
French language, then more generally spoken in Canada. In 1791
he began business in Woodstock, Vermont, in connection with
the Chandlers. In the general theory and the various details
of the business of a merchant he was probably the
best-educated man in Vermont. His unvarying rectitude in all
his affairs won for him the confidence of every one, while his
cheerful manners and the good-humor with which he enlivened
his various business transactions made him a favorite with all
classes of the community. After Mr. Swan retired from
mercantile pursuits, he sustained a variety of offices and
trusts. For many years he was the principal officiating
magistrate in Woodstock, and in the numerous trials of cases
which came before him the parties rarely, if ever, resorted to
a jury. He was the first postmaster in this town [Woodstock].
In 1796, on the resignation of General Morris of the office of
county clerk, Mr. Swan was appointed to that place, and from
that time to his death, a period of forty-three years,
retained the position of clerk of the Supreme and County
Courts. In the year 1800 he was appointed by the legislature
treasurer of the State, and thenceforward, for thirty-two
years, the freemen of Vermont honored themselves and reflected
honor upon him by electing him annually to that office, and
generally without opposition. For a large portion of the time
during which he served as treasurer, while banks were still scarce, and poor at that,
he acted as a kind of general banker, to whom all classes
of people resorted who were wishing to borrow, for an
emergency, a moderate sum of money. The following is
an instance among many that might be mentioned. When Zadock
Thompson was ready to have his first Gazetteer printed, he
needed money to run the paper. This was to be made at Wells
River. His father said he would go to Benjamin Swan and see if
he could raise the money from him. When he mentioned the
matter to Major Swan, and asked if he could do the favor, the
major answered, " Yes, yes, hum-m-m," and sat down and wrote
to the paper-maker thus: "Mr. Thompson wishes to buy
fifty dollars' worth of paper for his Gazetteer, for which he
shall be good. "Benjamin Swan." Many of the loans, however,
which Mr. Swan made in his function of general banker, proved
detrimental to bis pocket, if not to his peace of mind. After
his death there was found on the upper shelf of the bookcase
in his office a long row of files of notes, embracing many
thousand dollars in value, all outlawed, or otherwise wholly
worthless, &emdash; notes taken for sums of money lent to
people in needy circumstances living in the neighborhood, to
young men going West, and to various classes of people who
called on this patient and forbearing man for help out of some
difficulty. From this fact it would appear that the words of
Scripture, "from him that would borrow of thee, turn not thou
away," Mr. Swan regarded more in the light of a rule to live
by than as merely a piece of fine sentiment. No man was ever
more highly esteemed by the people of this State of Vermont
than Major Benjamin Swan, and no man was ever more deserving
of such esteem. Yet, notwithstanding the regard in which he
was held, and the universal deference paid to him, in his
deportment and in his heart he was a man of great modesty and
humility. This was in keeping with the kind and benevolent
spirit he exercised towards all classes of people with whom he
came in contact, whether in business affairs or in the private
walks of life. Offered here is a State
of Vermont, legal writ, 1811, signed twice on the front and
once on the verso. Approx. 7-3/4 x 12-3/4". VG............50-75
