1.
William Pope Duval (1784-1854) was the first civilian governor
of Florida Territory, succeeding Andrew Jackson who had been
military governor. In his twelve-year governorship, from 1822
to 1834, he divided Florida into four territories, established
the local court system, and chose Tallahassee as the
territory’s capital because of its central location. Duval
County, where Jacksonville is located, and Duval Street in Key
West are named for him. He was born in Virginia he was
inclined to be somewhat wild in his youth. While young
(age 14) he decided to go to Kentucky and told his father, who
remarked, “If I give you a Negro you will sell him the first
chance and spend the money you get for him; if I give you a
horse you will bet him off at the first horse race you see,
and if I give you a pocket full of money you will bet it off
or give it away. You love a gun and would not part with that.”
With a light heart he left home telling his family he wouldn’t
come back until he was a member of Congress. So he
walked to Kentucky. He arrived at Bardstown, Ky. and studied
law, fell in love and married the daughter of Col. Andrew
Hynes. Col. Hynes was the founder of Elizabethtown, which was
named after his wife. Having sown his wild oats he began to
practice law in Elizabethtown. As there were no lawyers there,
he was appointed County Attorney of Hardin County. In 1812 he
ran for congress and was so popular that no one opposed him.
He served in congress, 1813-14. On his first trip to
Washington he visited his relatives in Virginia for the first
time since leaving, thus verifying his promise not to return
until he was a congressman. In 1822 he was appointed Gov. of
Florida by President Monroe, and re-appointed by Presidents
Adams and Jackson. Offered here is an ADS, 1812, legal
document concerning debt and Bleakley and Montgomery. These
two men opened the first general store in Elizabethtown, Ky.,
doing much business with Thomas Lincoln, father of the future
president. Approx. 7-1/2 x 6-1/4 in. VG. Quite RARE!.
Portrait of Duval is not included here.............300-400

20. [ART] Peggy Bacon, one of America's most famous women artists. An ORIGINAL painting by the famous American artist, Peggy Bacon. Done in mixed media, she used ink and what appears to be a combination of watercolor and thinned oil paint. She has signed and dated this work 1971, and titled it THE BABES IN THE WOODS. The mat opening is 14 x 22.5 in. Executed on paper and in fine condition. Prints by Peggy Bacon are fairly common in the market, although expensive, and her paintings are quite scarce as the small number of auction records would indicate. This is a superb example of Bacon's work and should be considered important. Obviously its dark because the bear cubs are in the woods. This is guaranteed authentic and to have been painted and signed by Peggy Bacon, and we will send along a letter stating this. PEGGY BACON [1895-1987] A printmaker, illustrator, and author of children's books, Peggy Bacon later turned exclusively to fine art painting in watercolor, pastel, and oil. Her 1934 book of caricatures, "Off With Their Heads," established her as a leading satirist. Much of her work is satirical and lighthearted and frequently a commentary on the New York art world. She also chose many ordinary events in the lives of city people, giving these pieces a wry twist. She was born in Ridgefield, Connecticut to artist parents and studied at the Art Student's League. There in her drypoints, first completed in 1919, she was especially influenced by the realistic prints of John Sloan and George Bellows, but her style, with flattened forms and hardened contours, was more modern and abstract. In 1920, she married artist Alexander Brook, and during the next decade they were prominent figures in the Woodstock art colony. During the 1920s, she had two one-woman shows in New York and also illustrated and wrote numerous children's books. A satirical work on thirty-nine well known fellow artists, written in 1934 and called "Off With Their Heads," was funded by the Guggenheim Foundation. The book was greatly successful and stirred a demand for her caricatures, but she shied away from those subjects because they were hurtful to the subjects. In the late 1920s, she had began to explore lithographs, etchings, and pastel, but drypoint remained her favorite medium until the 1950s when she concentrated on oil painting. She was financially successful, selling her work well in New York, and she and her husband were part of the group of artists promoted by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. In 1940, she and her husband were divorced, and she continued to paint and also wrote novels. Her 1953 mystery, "The Inward Eye," earned the Edgar Allen Poe Mystery Award for best novel of the year. She lived to age ninety-two, spending the later years of her life at Cape Porpoise, Maine..............5000-7000

The
following photographs are from the personal collection of actor
Van Johnson or his daughter Schuyler. The glory days of the
1930's to the 1950's, when the stars were our royalty, and their
lives literally were as much a fantasy as the movies they made.
Van Johnson, having become a top box office attraction in the
1940's, the almost impossibly good looking "boy-next-door" with
the perfect hair and teeth, and the instantly likable
personality, ruled the town. And after his marriage to the
equally beloved Evie (who he seduced away from his best friend
Keenan Wynn), the two were the toast of the town, what with
their legendary parties, and trips around the world to see the
most famous of the globe.

Sir Everard Home,
1st Baronet FRS (1756-1832 ) British surgeon. Home
was born in Kingston-upon-Hull and educated at Westminster
School. He gained a schoalrship to Trinity College, Cambridge,
but decided instead to become a pupil of his brother-in-law,
John Hunter, at St George's Hospital. Hunter had married
his sister, the poet and socialite Anne Home, in July
1771. He assisted Hunter in many of his anatomical
investigations, and in the autumn of 1776 he partly described
Hunter's collection. There is also considerable evidence that
Home plagiarized Hunter's work, sometimes directly, sometimes
indirectly; he also systematically destroyed his
brother-in-law's papers in order to hide evidence of this
plagiarism. Having qualified at Surgeons' Hall in 1778,
Home was appointed assistant surgeon at the naval hospital,
Plymouth. In 1787 he appointed assistant surgeon, later surgeon,
at St George's Hospital. He became Sergeant Surgeon to the King
in 1808 and Surgeon at Chelsea Hospital in 1821. He was made a
baronet (of Well Manor in the County of Southampton) in
1813. He was the first to describe the fossil creature
(later 'Ichthyosaur') discovered near Lyme Regis by Joseph
Anning and Mary Anning in 1812. Following John Hunter, he
initially suggested it had affinities with fish. Home also did
some of the earliest studies on the anatomy of platypus and
noted that it was not viviparous, theorizing that it was instead
ovoviviparous. Home published prolifically on human and
animal anatomy. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal
Society in 1787, gave their Croonian Lecture many times between
1793 and 1829 and received their Copley Medal in 1807. ALS,

(1795-1858) French Jesuit preacher and author. Educated in
Paris, he resigned his army commission to study law. Auditor
of the royal court. Deputy attorney-general by 1821. Entering
a Sulpician monastery, and later joining the Society of Jesus,
he was ordained in 1828, and after several years as professor
and retreat preacher at Montrouge, he went to Notre Dame,
where his logic, serenity, and zeal won souls by the hundreds.
Superior of his brethren at Bordeaux from 1837 to 1842, and at
Paris from 1848 to 1851. He preached throughout France and in
Rome, Belgium, and London. His calm, eloquent De l'Existence
et de l'Institut des Jesuites of 1844, vindicating the
Society, sold 25,000 copies in one year. However, the Jesuits'
strife continued until they were forced to disband for a time
in France. Despite painful controversy with his
superiors and imputations from other quarters, he remained
loyal to his order. In 1854 he brought out Clement XIII et
Clement XIV, a dispassionate treatise, of no great literary
merit, on the defender and the suppressor of the Jesuits. He
steadfastly refused preferment, even the archbishopric of
Paris, devoting himself to other works. He died a saintly
death, and thousands followed the remains of the "Apostle of
Paris" to his grave. VG..........200-300
47. Jacob Barker
(1779–1871) was an American financier and lawyer. He was
born in Swan Island, Maine, in 1779, of Quaker parentage. He
went to New York at the age of 16, engaged in trade, and soon
amassed a considerable fortune. Beginning in 1811, Fitz-Greene
Halleck was employed by him for twenty years. Early in the War
of 1812 he was instrumental in securing a loan of $5,000,000 for
the national government. In 1815, he founded the Exchange Bank
of New York. He was a member of the New York State Senate in
1816. Subsequently he became interested in many other large
financial institutions in the city, including the Life and Fire
Insurance Company, on the failure of which in 1826 he, with a
number of others, was arrested on a charge of conspiracy to
defraud. At first he acted as his own lawyer, however,
eventually eminent attorneys Benjamin F. Butler and Thomas Addis
Emmet (1764–1827) were counsels for his defense. The jury
disagreed on the first trial and convicted Barker on the second
trial; but an appeal was granted and the indictment was finally
quashed. He removed to New Orleans in 1834, became
prominent in financial circles, was admitted to the bar, and
practiced with success in insurance cases. In the 1840s he
collaborated with Rowland G. Hazard to secure the release of
free African-Americans who were being illegally detained in
Louisiana under the assumption they were escaped slaves.
At the close of the American Civil War he was elected to the
United States Senate, but Louisiana not having been readmitted
to the Union, he was not allowed to take his seat. In 1867 he
was declared bankrupt and spent the last few years of his life
with his son in Philadelphia. Barker published The
Rebellion: Its Consequences and the Congressional Committee,
Denominated the Reconstruction Committee, with their Action
(1866). Rare financial document signed, United
States Circuit Court, New Orleans, 1845. Approx. 8-1/4 x 4

50. [ART] John Kay (1742- 1826) Scottish caricaturist and engraver. He was born near Dalkeith, where his father was a mason. At thirteen he was apprenticed to a barber, whom he served for six years. He then went to Edinburgh , where in 1771 he obtained the freedom of the city by joining the corporation of barber-surgeons. In 1785, induced by the favour which greeted certain attempts of his to etch in aquafortis, he took down his barber's pole and opened a small print shop in Parliament Square. There he continued to flourish, painting miniatures, and publishing at short intervals his sketches and caricatures of local celebrities and oddities, who abounded at that period in Edinburgh society. Kay's portraits were collected by Hugh Paton and published under the title A series of original portraits and caricature etchings by the late John Kay, with biographical sketches and illustrative anecdotes (Edinburgh, 2 vols. 4to, 1838; 8vo ed., 4 vols., 1842; new 4to ed., with additional plates, 2 vols., 1877), forming a unique record of the social life and popular habits of Edinburgh at its most interesting epoch. Original etching, image size approx. 5-1/4 x 4-7/8" plus margins. Titled "PROVINCIAL GENERAL BUTTONS Marching to SARATOGA with plunder". Foxing in margins & paperclip dent slightly touching image. 51. [ART] RALPH BAKSHI - American animator/draftsman. In the late 1950s & early 1960s he worked at CBS-Terrytoons on such series as "Heckle and Jeckle" and "Mighty Mouse." From there he went to Famous Studios-Paramount, where he directed countless "Casper the Friendly Ghost" and "Little Audrey" cartoons, among others. During the 1960s he also animated Peter Max's commercials. When Famous Studios closed in 1967, Bakshi went into partnership with Steve Krantz. Their first venture was "Fritz the Cat", released in 1972. The success of "Fritz" prompted "Heavy Traffic" [1973], a funny-sad chronicle of life in New York's slums. Striking out on his own, Bakshi produced the sometimes brilliant, often disappointing "Coonskin" [1974]; also "Wizards" [1977]; "Lord of the Rings" [1978]. Ralph Bakshi occupies a somewhat ambiguous position in the animation world. He is one of the more original artists at work in the animated cartoon medium. He has become a cult figure. 55. [FRANCE] Paul
Barillon d'Amoncourt, the marquis de Branges
(1630–1691) was the French ambassador to England from 1677
to 1688. His dispatches from England to Louis XIV have been
useful to historians of the period, though an expected bias
may be present. With the conquest of England by William of
Orange, Louis XIV's most implacable enemy, Barillon was
expelled from England and war soon commenced between the two
kingdoms. Both Charles II and James II treated him with
great courtesy: one historian refers to his " rather
pampered existence at Whitehall". Both appeared to
confide in him, although it is not always clear whether they
were sincere. Charles II, at the outbreak of the
Popish Plot, did tell Barillon frankly that Titus Oates, the
inventor of the Plot, was a villain, but that it would be
unwise to say so publicly. Barillon was often a conduit for
pleas for clemency, but these were not always well received;
the King simply brushed aside his plea for the life of
William, Lord Russell, and explained that while Oliver
Plunkett was an innocent man it was not expedient to spare
him. Charles's remark to Barillon that his brother James' s
public conversion to Roman Catholicism had weakened him is
important evidence that Charles postponed his own conversion
until he was dying. The marriage of the future Queen Anne to
George of Denmark, brother of France's ally, was a triumph
for French diplomacy, and it was probably Barillon who
originally proposed the marriage, although he did not play a
major role in subsequent negotiations, which were mainly
conducted by Lord Sunderland; like most people, Barilllon
found the groom entirely unimpressive. As a
counterweight, he intrigued with the Whig leaders, notably
Algernon Sidney, whose posthumous reputation was greatly
damaged by the discovery that Barillon had paid him regular
bribes. The Popish Plot, with the wave of anti-Catholic and
anti-French hysteria it produced, was in itself unwelcome to
Barillon, but he used it for short term advantage in helping
to bring down the Earl of Danby, the main exponent of a
Protestant, pro-Dutch, anti-Catholic policy, by assisting in
the publication of letters, which taken out of context,
suggested secret intrigues between Danby and the French
Court. After the failure of the Exclusion Bill, Barillon
records the King telling him in strict confidence that he
had been tempted to let it pass. Even Barillon, an astute
diplomat, admitted to finding Charles unfathomable: "his
conduct so secret and impenetrable that even the most
skillful observers are misled". Only once does he seem
to have been guilty of a serious diplomatic blunder: late in
1679 an indiscreet letter of his, reporting a conversation
where Charles II claimed to have personally blocked a
Franco-Dutch treaty, was leaked in the Netherlands. It
caused an uproar, and Charles was so angry with Barillon
that he forbade him the Court. Sunderland, who had probably
leaked the letter, remarked complacently that "I do not
question M. Barillon finds himself embarrassed, but when
anybody will play such tricks, it is but just that it should
come home to him at last." His disgrace was temporary,
but afterwards he was far more careful what he committed to
paper. At other times his relations with Sunderland were
amicable enough, although Sunderland sometimes treated him
to his famous outbursts of rudeness, and on one occasion
Barillon told him that he would not report his remarks if he
could not control himself. When it was rumoured in 1685 that
the French had given tacit support to Monmouth's Rebellion,
Sunderland told Barillon pointedly that he hoped this was a
misunderstanding, or else the English would wonder if Louis
had 'other plans they could not discern'. Later he
mocked Louis' vaunted desire for European peace, saying
brutally that the peace would last until it was in someone's
interest to break it. His privileged position was confirmed
in the last days of Charles II's reign, when, alone among
the diplomatic corps, he was allowed to send a secret
message to Louis XIV that the King was dying. In the
events leading to Charles' deathbed reception into the Roman
Catholic Church, he played a role of some importance. While
the King's brother James was already convinced of his
brother's wish to convert, it was Barillon, prompted by
Louise de Kéroualle, who urged James to act at once.
Together they visited the dying King, and Barillon witnessed
Charles' statement that he wished to be received " with all
his heart." James II's biographer describes him as an
astute diplomat, with an ability to convey information
through subtle hints, but personally unattractive: heavy,
gross and boorish. Approx. 23 handwritten pages about
Barillon dispatch in 1688. Discribed as

61. [FRANCE] Nicolas de Lamoignon - Nicolas Lamoignon-Bâville (1648-1724) was a French official said to have been accused by Voltaire of instigating the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He made himself famous by the measures he adopted against the Protestants, and by the manner in which he associated himself with the religious policy of Louvois, of which the revocation of the Edict of Nantes was the culminating point. But it is without proof that Voltaire accused him of having instigated this revocation. "I never counselled the revocation of the Edict of Nantes", he wrote to his brother in 1708. On the contrary he considered that "in religion hearts must be attacked, for it is there that it resides", and immediately after the revocation he sent for Bourdaloue to come and evangelize the Protestants of Montpellier. From 1702 to 1704 he helped in the repression of the uprising of the Camisards, occasioned in the Cevennes by English and Calvinistic influences.Document Signed, 1710, 4-pages, 8-1/4 x 12". 63. [FRANCE] Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse (1681), duc de Penthièvre (1697), (1711), (1678-1737), a legitimated prince of the blood royal, was the son of Louis XIV and of his mistress Françoise-Athénaïs, marquise de Montespan. At the age of five, he became grand admiral of France. In 1693, he became a chevalier des Ordres du roi (Order of the King) and, in 1704, a knight of the Toison d’or. Shortly before his death in 1715, Louis XIV added a codicil to his will stating that if all legitimate members of the House of Bourbon, both those descended from Louis and more distant kinsmen, died out, the throne of France could be inherited by the duc du Maine and the comte de Toulouse. The decision was reversed after the death of Louis XIV when Louis Alexandre's cousin, Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, as the new regent, had the Parlement de Paris void that portion of the will. The comte de Toulouse died at the Château de Rambouillet on 1 December 1737. He was buried in the village 12th century Saint-Lubin church. 64. [CIVIL WAR] Eugene
B. Payne (1835-1910). Two page letter
written in pencil, Illinois Legislature, House of
Representative, Springfield, Illinois, 1867. This is
Payne’s own retained copy of his letter to J.F. Farnsworth,
congressman from Illinois and Union general. Payne
is expressing regret that a Dr. [Moses] Evans was
recommended as Post Master of Waukengan, Illinois.
Payne recommends, instead, a Major. Clarkson. Says that
the railroad men want him in the post; says he is a rich man and
does not need the office. Says Clarkson needs the
job. According to the New York Times, April 8, 1910, Payne was
born in Seneca Falls, N.Y. on April 15, 1835. But in 1836
his family, led by his father, Thomas Hubbard Payne, bought land
in northwest Fremont Township, Lake County Illinois. The large
Payne family played crucial political and economic roles in the
development of Lake County, as described in John J. Halsey’s
1912 History of Lake County, Illinois (Waukegan, 1912, 432-51).
As the son of a pioneer family, Payne studied in local schools
and graduated from the Waukegan High School (Open Library
undocumented online article on General Payne). In 1860 he
was graduated from the law school of Northwestern University, a
member of the first class, and was “admitted to the bar that
same year,” according to the Times obituary. At the
beginning of the Civil War he organized at Waukegan, Illinois,
the first company of Union infantry troops in Illinois (37th
Illinois Infantry Regiment) and he served with them until
September of 1864 when he was discharged due to his dibilitating
malaria (background note, Payne collection, Clements Library, U.
of Michigan). That fall of 1864 he was elected to the Illinois
state legislature. Payne was wounded and ill
following his participation in the July 1863 Vicksburg campaign
and victory. His service after the spring of 1862 is
documented in the Payne collection at the Clements Library, U.
of Michigan. The background note for that collection
states that Payne thought that the December 1862 Prairie Grove
battle as equally significant to that at Pea Ridge. By the
end of the war, and after playing a role in an important Rio
Grande campaign and returning in early 1864 to Illinois to
recruit, he was mustered out in September 1864 at the rank of
Brigadier General. He was the first soldier from Lake
County, Illinois to achieve the rank of general. After the
war he served in the legislature to 1868, on the Republican
ticket. The Times obituary says that he practiced law for
seventeen years. The Open Library article reports that he lived
and practiced in Waukegan and in Evanston, Illinois to
1887. In 1885 A.T. Andreas in his History of Chicago, v.
1, 203, lists Payne as a resident of Chicago, “among respected
and beloved citizens” who fought with the 37th Regiment.
Late in life, after retiring from the bar, Payne “was made an
officer of the U.S. Pension Bureau,” Washington, DC, according
to the Times obituary.............80-120

STERNER'S influence is seen in the works of both Rockwell Kent and George Bellows who he introduced to the technique of lithography and put in touch with master printer/artist Bolton Brown. In 1915, Sterner rallied a group of printmakers together to raise the general quality of American prints. The founders of the Painter-Gravers of America included, along with Sterner, Childe Hassam, Bellows, & George Elmer Brown. His personality, wit, charm, erudition, and talent endeared him to many of his famous patrons. American animator/draftsman. In the late 1950s & early
1960s he worked at CBS-Terrytoons on such series as "Heckle
and Jeckle" and "Mighty Mouse." From there he went to Famous
Studios-Paramount, where he directed countless "Casper the
Friendly Ghost" and "Little Audrey" cartoons, among others.
During the 1960s he also animated Peter Max's commercials.
When Famous Studios closed in 1967, Bakshi went into
partnership with Steve Krantz. Their first venture was
"Fritz the Cat", released in 1972. The success of "Fritz"
prompted "Heavy Traffic" [1973], a funny-sad chronicle of
life in New York's slums. Striking out on his own, Bakshi
produced the sometimes brilliant, often disappointing
"Coonskin" [1974]; also "Wizards" [1977]; "Lord of the
Rings" [1978]. Ralph Bakshi occupies a somewhat ambiguous
position in the animation world. He is one of the more

[FRANCE] Jacques Vallée, Sieur Des
Barreaux (1599-1673) French poet. His
great-uncle, Geoffroy Vallée, had been hanged in 1574 for the
authorship of a book called Le Flau de la Joy. His nephew
appears to have inherited his scepticism, which on one occasion
nearly cost him his life; the peasants of Touraine attributed to
the presence of the unbeliever an untimely frost that damaged
the vines, and proposed to stone him. His authorship of the
sonnet on "Penitence", by which he is generally known, has
been disputed, notably by Voltaire. Des Barreaux was
apparently bisexual. Although he was later known as one of the
lovers of Marion Delorme, a famous courtesan, he also was the
lover of the freethinking poet Théophile de Viau, called the
"King of Libertines" by Jesuit prosecutors. During his
imprisonment in 1623–25 on charges of writing atheistic poems
with homosexual allusions, de Viau addressed a poem to Vallée,
"The Complaint of Théophile to his friend Tircis", reproaching
Des Barreaux for doing little to help him. After de Viau's
death in 1626, a contemporary biographer of high society,
Tallement des Réaux, referred to Des Barreaux as de Viau's
widow, "thus indicating that their physical relationship was
common knowledge at the time." Subsequently, Des Barreaux was a
lover of the libertine poet Denis Sanguin de Saint-Pavin, the
so-called "King of Sodom", "a consummate gentleman" whose
aristocratic rank and social connections protected him from
prosecution for his witty, homosexually themed writings.
In his Pensées, Pascal refers to him in a passage about those
who renounce reason and "become brute beasts". A

Sir Thomas had enjoyed the Queen's trust and confidence for 27 years, but there had been one occasion when he had threatened to resign, because of rows with John Brown, the Queen's personal gillie and favourite. It is on record that the Queen made gentle fun of Sir Thomas behind his back: with roars of laughter she told Sir Henry Ponsonby how shocked Sir Thomas had been by the design for a medal of the Ashanti campaign and she quoted his comment, "Roman soldiers with nothing - nothing at all - but helmets on." However, Sir Thomas was not without a sense of humour: in 1871, when the Queen was gravely ill with an abscess on her arm, Lady Churchill wanted to send for all her children. [GREAT EASTERN] John Scott Russell 1808-1882) Scottish naval engineer who built the Great Eastern in collaboration with Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and made the discovery that gave birth to the modern study of solitons. He was held in high regard by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who made him a partner in his project to build the Great Eastern. At its time, this was to be the largest moveable object man had ever created. The Great Eastern was eventually launched in 1858, having been designed according to Russell's wave system. 134. Winfield
Scott (1786-1866) American general, and
unsuccessful presidential candidate of the Whig Party in 1852.
Known as "Old Fuss and Feathers" and the "Grand Old Man of the
Army," he served on active duty as a general longer than any
other man in American history , and many historians rate him the
best American commander of his time. Over the course of his
forty-seven-year career, he commanded forces in the War of 1812,
the Mexican-American War, the Black Hawk War, the Second
Seminole War, and, briefly, the American Civil War, conceiving
the Union strategy known as the Anaconda Plan that would be used
to defeat the Confederacy. He served as Commanding General of
the United States Army for twenty years, longer than any other
holder of the office. A national hero after the Mexican-American
War, he served as military governor of Mexico City. Such was his
stature that, in 1852, the United States Whig Party passed over
its own incumbent President of the United States, Millard
Fillmore, to nominate Scott in that year's United States
presidential election. At a height of 6'5", he remains the
tallest man ever nominated by a major party. Scott lost to
Democrat Franklin Pierce in the general election, but remained a
popular national figure, receiving a brevet promotion in 1856 to
the rank of lieutenant general, becoming the first American
since George Washington to hold that rank. CLIP SIGNATURE.....100-150

157. [THEATRE] Elisabeth (Bessy) Marbury (1856-1933) pioneering
American theatrical and literary agent and producer who
represented prominent theatrical performers and writers in the
late 19th and early 20th centuries and helped shape business
methods of the modern commercial theater. She was the longtime
companion of Elsie de Wolfe (later known as Lady Mendl), a
prominent socialite and famous interior decorator. Marbury, for
many remains a bundle of contradictions. Although she herself
was the embodiment of female independence in almost every way,
she initially opposed suffrage. She made a bold reversal once
women in the USA did receive the right to vote. Bessy Marbury's
clients ranged from the French Academy of Letters, to
playwrights Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw, to the dance
team of Vernon and Irene Castle, as well as being an early
promoter of African American writers of the Harlem Renaissance.
She also played an instrumental role in developing the modern
"Book Musical" that audiences came to know as defining
"Broadway" in the twentieth century, notably of Cole Porter's
first musical, See America First, and Jerome Kern (Nobody Home
(1915), Very Good, Eddie (1915), and Love o' Mike (1916)). Who
she represented just goes on and on. Offered here are 3 TLSs,

Isabelle de Montolieu (1751-1832) was a Swiss novelist and
translator. She wrote in and translated to the French
language. Montolieu penned a few original novels and over 100
volumes of translations. She wrote the first French
translation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility (Raison et
Sensibilité, ou Les Deux Manières d'Aimer) and Persuasion (La
Famille Elliot, ou L'Ancienne Inclination). One of her
translations to French - Johann David Wyss's German-language
The Swiss Family Robinson (Le Robinson suisse, ou, Journal
d'un père de famille, naufragé avec ses enfans ) - was adapted
and expanded by her with original episodes more than once.
Montolieu's French version is the literal source of still
frequently reprinted English translations - for example
William H. G. Kingston's 1879 version, one of the most popular
in English over the years, is actually a translation of
Montolieu's French adaptation. Her first novel, Caroline de

From 1879 to 1883, Pope created many well-received carvings of game. Czar Alexander III of Russia acquired two of the carvings. In 1893, Pope began painting animal portraits and, later, pursued a career as a portrait painter. Eventually, he was considered one of the best Bostonian trompe l'oeil painters of the 19th century Pope's work is recognized in many private collections and museums, including the M.H. De Young Memorial Museum and the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Offered here is one of his childhood sketches. Small sheet, unsigned, with minor sketches on both sides. 168. [SILENT FILM] Jane Novak (1896-1990)
was a silent film actress. Born in St. Louis she
attended convent school but ran away with a friend with
whom she created a vaudeville act. Although she returned
home, an aunt invited her to California where she began
acting in motion pictures in 1913 at the age of 17. She
appeared in a movie on her very first day in southern
California, before there was a film studio in Hollywood.
Novak endured as a performer, in part, by sacrificing
sensational roles for roles as leading women in more
wholesome films. Some actresses who were Novak's
contemporaries quickly found stardom, yet were forgotten
soon afterward, while she was considered an
"old-fashioned girl." As a result, Novak, refused to
work in films with other leading ladies. She played
opposite Wallace Beery, Tom Mix, Hobart Bosworth, Alan
Hale, Thomas Moore, and Lewis Stone. At one time she was
engaged to marry Western star William S. Hart, although
their marriage never took place. She is celebrated for
her westerns; and made five films with Hart. Offered here is
a signed sheet with a small picture scene from the
film "ROADS OF DESTINY" affixed above her autograph. Shown in the scene
are Pauline Frederick, John Bowers and Novak..........20-30

On 9 September 1799 he married Mary Caroline Manners (second daughter of daughter of John Manners and Louisa Tollemache, 7th Countess of Dysart ), who died on 20 December 1805 without children. Thereupon Duff sought distraction in 1808 by volunteering to join the Spaniards in their war against Napoleon . His assistance was gladly received, especially as he came full of enthusiasm and with a full purse, and he was made a major-general in the Spanish service. He served with great distinction at the battle of Talavera , where he was severely wounded in trying to rally the Spanish runaways, and was only saved from becoming a prisoner by the gallantry of his lifelong friend, Major (afterwards Lieutenant-general Sir) S. politician who served as the 26th Governor of Maryland from
1842–1844. He also served as a United States Representative from
Maryland, representing at separate times the fourth, fifth,
sixth, and seventh districts. In 1841, Thomas was elected
Governor of Maryland, defeating challenger William Cost Johnson
by a margin of 600 votes. During his tenure as governor, he is
perhaps best known for his highly publicized and violent divorce
with his wife, Sally Campbell Preston McDowell. Until that
event, he had been a leading candidate for Democratic nomination
for President of the United States, but the divorce seriously
disrupted his chances in succeeding in the nomination, and thus
he did not pursue it. DOCUMENT

185. Ivy Litvinov [1889-1977] English writer, wife of Soviet Foreign Affairs minister. Ivy Lowe, born in London in 1889 of the unlikely union of a Jewish intellectual and the daughter of an Indian army colonel, grew up to be a writer and a rebel. The man she met in 1914 and married two years later was the Bolshevik revolutionary, Maksim Litvinov (born Meyer Genokh Wallakh to Orthodox Jewish parents). He became one of the most important figures in the Soviet Union and was ultimately Stalin's Minister of Foreign Affairs and ambassador to Washington. Ivy spent most of her long life in Moscow. She never took to being the Commissar's wife, but devoted herself to literature. Her writing is almost without exception a heightened autobiography, the collection of short stories depicting her daily life and observations. The fact that she survived under Stalin is remarkable, although there was an unexplained year when she was virtually in exile in the Urals, separated from her husband and two children. The happiest time of her life was when Maxim was the ambassador to the United States, and she and America fell in love with one another. Her dynamic, bohemian personality entranced Americans and she was fêted by artists, film stars, writers and statesmen alike. It is perhaps appropriate that many of her stories were first published in the New Yorker. They were collected in 1971 under the title She Knew She Was Right. "She also translated into English her husband's speeches and party tracts and later such Russian classics as Pushkin, Turgenev, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, and Chekhov." "Her final years were spent adding to a disorderly pile of unpublished manuscripts, but never producing the volume of memoirs about high life in the Kremlin that was expected of her. In fact, she always remained something of an outsider, and her fifty-year sojourn in the Soviet Union owed more to personal loyalty to her husband, and later her children, than to sympathy with Communist ideology." ANS written on postcard, postmarked May 9, 1960, saying she has just become a great grandmother. "Please you don't have to congratulate me!" She is writing to the celebrated journalist Leonard Lyons [1906-1976]. Signed "Ivy". She writes on front side "Do you remember?" Uncommon autograph.............100-150

Buck Jones was one of the 492 victims of the 1942 Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston, Massachusetts , dying two days after the November 28 blaze. Wings, for which he received the first Academy Award

films over the course of his career. He lived in the same
house in Beverly Hills until the day he died; he was an avid
polo player and would frequently ride out of the stables
located, in those days, at the rear of his Hillcrest Road
property, to Will Rogers' house in the Palisades; he also
occasionally rode his horse to Paramount Studios where he had
been elevated to president shortly after the Academy Award
winning Wings which he produced, was released. This film
helped director William A. Wellman's rise into major studio
films. Before coming to Los Angeles, he was night editor
of The New York Times. He had written five screenplays on the
side and decided one day to travel to Hollywood to see if he
could sell any of them; he sold three and in 1923, his career
was launched. A film he loved was entitled The Vanishing
American and it was the first film to portray the
Indian in a favorable light; he received an award from the
Cherokee nation for this film. He discovered and mentored many
talents over the life of his career and was known as a very

197. [FRANCE] Printed DECRET De La Convention Nationale, Feb. 5, 1794, 3-pages, about 7-3/4 x 8-1/2. This is from the period know as The Reign of Terror on the topic of Slavery. On first page it names General Pichegru(e) in Chief of Northern Army. Jean-Charles Pichegru (1761 - 1804) French general and political figure of the French Revolution and Revolutionary Wars. He briefly served in the American Revolutionary War. In December 1793 Hoche was arrested, probably owing to his colleague's denounciations, and Pichegru became commander-in-chief of the army of the Rhine-and-Moselle, then he was summoned to succeed Jourdan in the army of the North in February 1794, subsequently fighting three major campaigns of one year (see: French Revolutionary Wars: Campaigns of 1794). The forces of the Kingdom of Great Britain, the Dutch Republic and Habsburg Austria held a strong position along the Sambre to the North Sea. He planned a coup d'état known as the Coup of 18 Fructidor, but was arrested, and with fourteen others deported to Cayenne, French Guiana, in 1797. He and seven others escaped and fled to Paramaribo. The gouverneur De Friderici allowed them to get on board on a ship to the United States. Then he went to London, serving on General Aleksandr Rimsky-Korsakov's staff in the campaign of 1799. He went to Paris in August 1803 with Georges Cadoudal to head a Royalist uprising against the First Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte . Betrayed by a friend, he was arrested on 28 February 1804, and was later found strangled in prison, but it could also have been a suicide. The Reign of Terror (September 5, 1793 to July 28, 1794), also known simply as The Terror (French: la Terreur), was a period of violence that occurred after the onset of the French Revolution, incited by conflict between rival political factions, the Girondins and the Jacobins, and marked by mass executions of "enemies of the revolution." The guillotine (called the "National Razor") became the symbol of the revolutionary cause, strengthened by a string of executions, including King Louis XVI, and Marie Antoinette. He fought during the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary, and the Napoleonic Wars. Pellew is remembered as an officer and a gentleman of great courage and leadership. Under the command of Captain Philemon Pownoll, he took General John Burgoyne to America in the spring of 1776. In October Pellew, together with another midshipman, Brown, was detached, under Lieutenant Dacres, for service in the Carleton tender on Lake Champlain. During the Battle of Valcour Island on 11 October, Dacres and Brown were both severely wounded, and the command devolved on Pellew, who, by his personal gallantry, extricated the vessel from a position of great danger. As a reward for his service he was immediately appointed to command the Carleton. In December Lord Howe wrote, promising him a commission as lieutenant when he could reach New York, and in the following January Lord Sandwich wrote promising to promote him when he came to England. In the summer of 1777 Pellew, with a small party of seamen, was attached to the army under Burgoyne, was present in the fighting at Saratoga , where his youngest brother, John, was killed. He, together with the rest of the force, was taken prisoner. After the surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga, he was repatriated. 249. [LAW] Roger Minott Sherman (1773-1844) brother of the distinguished Roger Sherman. After graduation he began the study of law in Windsor, under the direction of the Honorable Oliver Ellsworth, and at the same time taught an academy. After about two years he removed to the Litchfield Law School, where he continued his studies with the Honorable Tapping Reeve, while teaching a common school. In February, 1795, he was elected a tutor at Yale College, and on March 12 began his duties succeeding James Gould, of the Class of 1791, in the instruction of the sophomore (2nd year) class, and at the same time continuing the study of law with the Roger Sherman's son-in-law, Honorable Simeon Baldwin (Yale 1781). He united with the church in Yale College by profession of his faith on May 1, 1796, and ever after made the advancement of the interests of religion a prime object. His eminence in his profession was early acknowledged, and his influence exerted in other relations. He represented the town in the General Assembly in the two sessions of 1798. It is believed that he argued more causes than any other lawyer who practiced in Connecticut during the first half of the nineteenth century. He did comparatively little office-business, but devoted his time to the trial of causes in court, and he also for more than twenty-five years attended the Legislature as an advocate in cases pending before that body. He was deeply interested in the administration of justice as provided for by legislative enactment, and many of the statutes of the State in the Department of municipal law during his active life were drawn up and their passage procured by him. In 1814, he was elected to the Connecticut Governor's Council, and continued in that office until May, 1818, when the constitution of the State was altered. During this time he declined a nomination to the United States Congress. In 1814, he was appointed a delegate to the Hartford Convention , in the proceedings of which he took an active part. He had been actively interested also in the steps preliminary to the call of the Convention, and was the author of the Report to the Connecticut Legislature, of the Committee which had recommended the appointment of delegates. After the death of Yale College President Timothy Dwight in 1817, he was considered by some as a candidate for the presidency of Yale. There is no doubt that Mr. Sherman's rank as a lawyer was among the very first in the country, --to be compared with that of Jeremiah Mason and Daniel Webster. 259. [VERMONT] Benj. Swan (1762-1839) an
interesting Vermont person. Known as Major Ben Swan, was born
in Worcester, Mass. At Worcester and in Boston, Benjamin
received a most thorough mercantile education in the house of
Messrs. Samuel & Stephen Salisbury, a firm whose standing
and credit for a series of years gave them the highest
reputation in the commercial community, both in Europe and
America. Mr. Swan was for some time in a mercantile house in
Montreal, where he became quite thoroughly versed in the
French language, then more generally spoken in Canada. In 1791
he began business in Woodstock, Vermont, in connection with
the Chandlers. In the general theory and the various details
of the business of a merchant he was probably the
best-educated man in Vermont. His unvarying rectitude in all
his affairs won for him the confidence of every one, while his
cheerful manners and the good-humor with which he enlivened
his various business transactions made him a favorite with all
classes of the community. After Mr. Swan retired from
mercantile pursuits, he sustained a variety of offices and
trusts. For many years he was the principal officiating
magistrate in Woodstock, and in the numerous trials of cases
which came before him the parties rarely, if ever, resorted to
a jury. He was the first postmaster in this town [Woodstock].
In 1796, on the resignation of General Morris of the office of
county clerk, Mr. Swan was appointed to that place, and from
that time to his death, a period of forty-three years,
retained the position of clerk of the Supreme and County
Courts. In the year 1800 he was appointed by the legislature
treasurer of the State, and thenceforward, for thirty-two
years, the freemen of Vermont honored themselves and reflected
honor upon him by electing him annually to that office, and
generally without opposition. For a large portion of the time
during which he served as treasurer, while banks were still scarce, and poor at that,
he acted as a kind of general banker, to whom all classes
of people resorted who were wishing to borrow, for an
emergency, a moderate sum of money. The following is
an instance among many that might be mentioned. When Zadock
Thompson was ready to have his first Gazetteer printed, he
needed money to run the paper. This was to be made at Wells
River. His father said he would go to Benjamin Swan and see if
he could raise the money from him. When he mentioned the
matter to Major Swan, and asked if he could do the favor, the
major answered, " Yes, yes, hum-m-m," and sat down and wrote
to the paper-maker thus: "Mr. Thompson wishes to buy
fifty dollars' worth of paper for his Gazetteer, for which he
shall be good. "Benjamin Swan." Many of the loans, however,
which Mr. Swan made in his function of general banker, proved
detrimental to bis pocket, if not to his peace of mind. After
his death there was found on the upper shelf of the bookcase
in his office a long row of files of notes, embracing many
thousand dollars in value, all outlawed, or otherwise wholly
worthless, &emdash; notes taken for sums of money lent to
people in needy circumstances living in the neighborhood, to
young men going West, and to various classes of people who
called on this patient and forbearing man for help out of some
difficulty. From this fact it would appear that the words of
Scripture, "from him that would borrow of thee, turn not thou
away," Mr. Swan regarded more in the light of a rule to live
by than as merely a piece of fine sentiment. No man was ever
more highly esteemed by the people of this State of Vermont
than Major Benjamin Swan, and no man was ever more deserving
of such esteem. Yet, notwithstanding the regard in which he
was held, and the universal deference paid to him, in his
deportment and in his heart he was a man of great modesty and
humility. This was in keeping with the kind and benevolent
spirit he exercised towards all classes of people with whom he
came in contact, whether in business affairs or in the private
walks of life. Offered here is a State
of Vermont, legal writ, 1811, signed twice on the front and
once on the verso. Approx. 7-3/4 x 12-3/4". VG............50-75

nun is saved from entombment at the hands of a corrupt mother
superior."[1] The work has been described as the first rescue

He was a member of the Secret Society of Les Saisons [very important in the 1839 Revolution]. He was arrested in the act of making bullets for the revolutionaries. Despite being an exceedingly prolific writer not only of biographical dictionaries but also 'bodice-rippers', and (as we have seen) that he tried to profit from contemporary politics to enhance his sales, he never managed to emerge from extreme poverty and died supported by his daughter at the fall of the Second Empire in 1870. "The issue of the powder plot of the Rue de Poursine was the condemnation of twenty-four individuals to various sentences of fine and imprisonment, from 300 to 3000 francs, and from four months to two years. Among the rest, Blanqui, Beaufotir, and Robier, figured as the highest mulcts, the longest terms, and each two years of surveillance at the expiration of their punishment. In November 1838, another manufactory of cartridges was discovered, and Raban, an en graver in the Palais Royal, the principal, condemned to two years in prison, two of his associates to eighteen and three months. A very large quantity of ammunition was also seized ; and every thing went to prove that the formation of secret societies to overturn the government had not ceased for an instant...."
