1. [PIONEER KENTUCKY] Jacob Myers
(1763-1804) frontier enterpreneur, said to be the
first distiller of whiskey in Kentucky. He
also took up surveying, and between 1785 and 1792, he
mapped and filed land grant claims in Virginia for over 145
tracts, encompassing some 30,000 acres. Evan Williams
"Black Label" Bourbon whickey is advertised as
"Since 1783" and "Kentucky's 1st distiller". However,
the inscriptions should not be construed as indicating that
the brand has continuously existed since the time of the
historic distillery. The modern whisky brand was established
in the mid-1900s and has no direct connection to the
historic distiller. Moreover, key details of the
historical claims about Williams have been asserted to be
false by historian Michael Veach of the Filson Historical
Society. Veach said that the assertion that Williams
was Kentucky's first distiller did not appear until an 1892
publication by Reuben Durrett – more than a century after
the fact. He also said that the dating is disproved by a
record of Williams traveling from London to Philadelphia in
May 1794, showing that Williams could only have begun his
distillery substantially later. Veach indicated that the
true identity of Kentucky's first distiller may never really
be known, that record-keeping about such matters was poor,
and that there are others that seem more likely as
candidates for first distiller, including Jacob Myers and
brothers Joseph and Samuel Davis. Records reportedly
indicate that Myers and the Davis brothers both arrived in
1779. Jacob Myers’ true ambition was not farming, but rather
the production of spirits, from the ample harvest of the
settlers in the fertile new lands. His share of the
production, “2 gallons for every 10 produced”, he resold to
his neighbors and the steady stream of new arrivals coming
over on the Wilderness Road. In 1780, when the District of
Kentucky was organized into 3 new counties of Virginia,
Jacob sought the elected office of burgess, “making free use
of his whiskey” to win support. He was outdistanced by Ben
Logan, indian fighter and compatriot of Squire Boone.
Nonetheless, his enterprise continued, and in 1783, Jacob
constructed a new grist mill near his distillery on Dick’s
river. Offered here is an extremely rare
manuscript document 1787, signed by Jacob Myers and
Matthew Walton (? - 1819) U.S. Representative
from Kentucky, cousin of George Walton and John Walton.
Walton received a limited schooling. He served as member of
the conventions held in Danville in 1785 and 1787. He served
as member of the first State constitutional convention,
1792. He served as member of the Kentucky House of
Representatives, 1792, 1795, and 1808. Walton was
elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Eighth and Ninth
Congresses (March 4, 1803-March 3, 1807). He died in
Springfield, Kentucky, January 18, 1819. This document is an
agreement whereby Jacob Myers is to pay off a debt owed to
Matthew Walton with whiskey. Approx. 7-1/4 x
9-1/4 in. Considering its age this is in excellent
condition. RARE!.................1400-1800
2. Mary Johnston Pickett
(1805-1860) the mother of the future Confederate General,
George E. Pickett. A rare letter written to her son George,
who is studying law at Quincy, Illinois. The letter was sent
by Mary from Richmond, Virginia, Jan. 27th, 1841. George
Pickett was 16 years old at the time. Pickett was born in
Richmond, Virginia, the first of the eight children of Robert
and Mary Pickett, a prominent family of Old Virginia of
English origins, and one of the "first families" of Virginia.
He was the cousin of future Confederate general Henry Heth. He
went to Illinois, to study law, but at the age of 17 he was
appointed to the United States Military Academy. Legend has it
that Pickett's West Point appointment was secured for him by
Abraham Lincoln, but this is largely believed to be a story
circulated by his widow following his death. Lincoln, as an
Illinois state legislator, could not nominate candidates,
although he did give the young man advice after he was
accepted; Pickett was actually appointed by Illinois
Congressman John T. Stuart, a friend of Pickett's uncle and a
law partner of Abraham Lincoln. A year after young George
received this letter he was off to West Point. Pickett was
popular as a cadet at West Point. He was mischievous and a
player of pranks, "... a man of ability, but belonging to a
cadet set that appeared to have no ambition for class standing
and wanted to do only enough study to secure their
graduation." At a time when often a third of the class washed
out before graduation, Pickett persisted, working off his
demerits and doing enough in his studies to graduate, ranking
last out of the 59 surviving students in the Class of 1846. It
is a position held with some backhanded distinction, referred
to today as the "goat", both for its stubbornness and
tenacity. The position usually relegated its holder to a
posting commanding infantry in some far away outpost, which if
no conflict arose, would offer little opportunity to advance.
Two of the most famous "goats" were Pickett and George
Armstrong Custer (as was also Pickett's cousin, Harry Heth).
All of them had the good fortune to graduate shortly after a
war broke out, when the army had a sudden need for officers,
greatly improving their opportunities. In this letter [folded
stampless letter], 3 full pages, plus the address leaf WHICH IS DOCKETED BY GEORGE PICKETT
[himself], his mother Mary asked him
about his chances of getting an appointment to West Point, and
then goes on at great length to talk about concerns back home
about whether George will conduct [behave] himself. She
mentions energy and independence of character, etc. George
Pickett’s personality has already established itself,
apparently enough to cause great worry for his mother. The
picture of the painted portrait of Mary Pickett was borrowed
from the internet and is not included here. Starting to

and opened a studio on East 23rd Street in 1908. There, she
met Walt; they married the next year. Retained ink
signed TLS, July 30, 1949, 1p, to James H. Wall, M.D.,
asking for the results of Walt's autopsy. She wants to know
the connection between Kuhn's ulcers and his emotional
disturbance. By the 1940s, Kuhn’s behavior began to take on
unsound characteristics. He became increasingly irascible
and distant from old friends. When the Ringling Brothers
Circus was in town, he attended night after night. (During a
hard-pressed period in the 1920s, Kuhn had worked as a
designer and director for revues and circus acts.) He also
became frustrated by the lack of attention his own work was
receiving and was particularly strident about the Museum of
Modern Art's support of abstraction and neglect of American
art in the postwar period. In 1948, he was
institutionalized, and on July 13, 1949, he died suddenly
from a perforated ulcer. Includes Dr. Wall's reply giving
Vera an explanation about uclers and how they were
associated with "individuals of Mr. Kuhn's
temperament." The handwritten noter top corner is by

12. [NAVAL HISTORY] Henry O. Rittenhouse
(1851-1927) American Naval Commander. ALS, Apia,
Samoa, May 18, 1889, 2 full pages. To naval
officer Henry Lieut. Commander Henry W. Lyon. “My Dear
Lyon, The departure of the ships and the beautiful
casting of the “Nipsic” the evening you left Apia
was a relief and pleasure to the Admiral. You turned
around beautifully from your narrow birth. I hope you had
no difficulty in making Pago Pago, and that all goes on
well. The Admiral’s heart is constantly with you,
and if good wishes are of any avail you will be abundantly
successful. Your volunteering, under all the circumstances
was a great support to the Admiral I know, and I
tell him constantly that there is nothing that will be
left undone now to carry out his desires. He is very
confident and hopeful. There is nothing on file in the
office regarding your volunteering, and yesterday the
Admiral mentioned it. I think it is pre-eminently due you,
in fact it is very desirable for many consideration
(touching yourself, not the Admiral) that your offer
should be in the archives. I would suggest therefore that
you reduce it to writing and date anterior to your
assignment to the Nipsic. I know the Admiral would
be pleased to have it so. The Wainui arrived yesterday
bringing dates May 6th. Reported fine weather all the way
up from Auckland.......” Light damp staining right
edge of both pages doesn’t affect. USS Nipsic was a
gunboat. On 15 March 1889, Nipsic rode at anchor in
Apia Harbor with USS Vandalia, USS Trenton,
HMS Calliope, and three German naval vessels, Adler,
Olga, and Eber, along with six merchantmen. Gale-force
winds arose, and preparations for leaving harbor were
begun, but departure was delayed in the hope that
conditions next morning would be more favorable for the
sortie. However, by early morning on 16 March the harbor
was a mass of foam and spray as hurricane-force winds
battered the ships in the 1889 Apia cyclone. Only
Calliope, larger and more strongly powered than the
others, was able to leave the harbor. Vandalia, Trenton,
the three German ships, and the merchantmen were all sunk;
Nipsic's captain, Cmdr. D. W. Mullin, was able by superb
seamanship to beach his ship. Mullin was replaced by Henry
W. Lyon. While severely damaged by the pounding she
received on the beach, Nipsic's hull was intact, although
much of her topside structure was battered, all of her
propeller blades damaged, two boilers spread and useless,
and eight of her crew lost. Refloated and her engines
repaired, Nipsic cleared Apia on 9 May for Auckland, but
was turned back by heavy seas. On 15 May she again sailed,
for Pago Pago, Fanning Island, and Honolulu, arriving on 2
August. Provenance: Estate of Admiral Henry W. Lyon,
who had a distinguished Naval career, was honored for his
service in the Spanish-American war where he commanded the
U. S. S. Dolphin. Lyon and his wife, Liela, bought a house
in Paris Hill, Maine in 1899 and moved there full time
when he retired from the Navy in 1907..............200-250

16. [ART] Anthony
Thieme (1888-1954) was a landscape and
marine painter and a major figure of the Rockport (MA) School
of American regional art. He was a contemporary of important
Rockport artists Aldro Hibbard, Emil Gruppe, W. Lester
Stevens, Antonio Cirino, and Marguerite Pierson. Born in
Rotterdam on 20 February 1888, Thieme studied at the Academie
of Fine Arts in Rotterdam for two years and then, briefly, at
the Royal Academy, the Hague. He traveled widely in Europe,
frequently finding work as a stage designer.Thieme traveled to
the United States at the age of 22. He quickly found work as a
stage designer at the Century Theater in New York, designing
sets for the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. When the
commission ended, he traveled to South America, primarily
Brazil and Argentina. Stage work again provided his
livelihood. A return to Europe followed with further work in
England, France, and Italy. Returning to the United States
with a contract for additional stage work, Thieme found
himself in Boston. He discontinued work on the stage in 1928
and from then on made his living with the sales of his
paintings and etchings. Thieme married Lillian Beckett in 1929
and moved to Rockport, MA. He established the Thieme School of
Art. He exhibited his work frequently at the Grand Central Art
Galleries in New York. He continued to travel widely; Mexico,
Guatemala, Florida, and France were major destinations, always
painting en plein air. Thieme committed suicide on 6 December
1954 in Greenwich, CT. The circumstances of his death are not
fully understood. Anthony Thieme was a full member of the
American Watercolor Society, Art Alliance of America, the
Salmagundi Club, the Boston Art Club, North Shore Art
Association, Rockport Art Association, New York Water Color
Club, Art Alliance of Philadelphia and the National Arts Club.

(Jeroným Prazsky in Czech, 1379 – 1416) was a Czech church

original mezzotint portrait is by Richard
Houston (1721?–1775) who was an
Irish mezzotint engraver, whose career was mostly in
London. Born in Dublin about 1721, he became a pupil
of John Brooks, who was also the master of James McArdell
and Charles Spooner. He came to London about 1747, and some
of his early plates bear the address "near Drummond's at
Charing Cross". In debt to Robert Sayer the print-seller, he
was arrested and confined to the Fleet prison; according to
Sayer this in order that he might know where to find the
dissipated Houston. He was released in 1760, on the
accession of George III. As a free agent he was commissioned

20. Samuel Johnson
(1822- 1882) American clergyman and author.
Johnson graduated from Harvard in 1842, and from the Harvard
Divinity School in 1846. He joined no religious denomination.
Save for one year with a Unitarian church in Dorchester,
Massachusetts, where he displeased his congregation by his
opposition to slavery, he was not settled as a minister until
1853. In 1853, he established an independent society in Lynn,
Massachusetts, with which he remained till 1870, when he
withdrew to complete studies of many years, the results of
which appeared later in his publications. With Samuel
Longfellow, Johnson compiled a Book of Hymns (1846) and Hymns
of the Spirit (1864). Some of his own inspiring hymns in these
books are now found in the collections of various
denominations. His critical study The Worship of Jesus (1868),
written in accordance with his views of universal religion, is
described by O. B. Frothingham as “perhaps the most
penetrating and uplifting essay on that subject in any
language.” He printed notable essays on religion, reform,
etc., in The Radical and other periodicals. His great series
Oriental Religions included volumes on India (1872), China
(1877) and Persia (1885). The volume on Persia contains an
introduction and a critical estimate of Johnson by
Frothingham. The series represents what Johnson himself calls
his “purely humanistic point of view.” It took its place among
the most learned and liberal contributions to the study of
comparative religion and civilisation. His philosophy was
highly transcendental; but being versed in many languages, he
was acquainted with all schools, and with the results of
history, literature, science and criticism in every
department.Autograph Letter Signed - written to George Luther
Stearns (1809-1867). Johnson mentions a letter by Stearns
published in the Commonwealth and says "It is a historical
document." Docket on verso indicates that the letter was a
resignation letter.George Luther Stearns (1809-1867) American
industrialist and merchant, as well as a noted recruiter of
blacks for the Union Army during the American Civil War.
Stearns was one of the "Secret Six" who aided John Brown in
Kansas, and financially supported him until Brown's execution
after the ill-fated raid on Harpers Ferry. Stearns physically
owned the pikes and 200 Sharps rifles brought to Harpers Ferry
by Brown and his followers. Following Brown's arrest, Stearns
briefly fled to Canada, but returned to Medford to face
inquiry following Brown's death. Soon after the opening of the
Civil War, Stearns advocated the enlistment of
African-Americans in the Union Army. Massachusetts Governor
John Andrew asked Stearns to recruit the first two Northern
state-sponsored black infantry regiments. The 54th and 55th
Massachusetts regiments and the 5th cavalry were largely
recruited through his instrumentality. He was commissioned
Major through the recommendation of Secretary of War Edwin M.
Stanton, and was later of great service to the national cause
by enlisting blacks for the volunteer service in Pennsylvania,
Maryland, and Tennessee to serve in the U.S. Colored Troops.
He recruited over 13,000 African-Americans, established
schools for their children, and found work for their families
while they served in the army. Other than fold lines this is

(1483-1546) German monk, Catholic priest, professor of
theology and seminal figure of the 16th-century movement in
Christianity known later as the Protestant Reformation.[1] He
strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment
for sin could be purchased with monetary values. He confronted
indulgence salesman Johann Tetzel, a Dominican friar, with his
Ninety-Five Theses in 1517. His refusal to retract all of his
writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy
Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521 resulted
in his excommunication by the Pope and condemnation as an
outlaw by the Emperor. This original mezzotint
portrait is by Richard
Houston (1721?–1775) who was
an Irish mezzotint engraver, whose career was mostly in
London. Born in Dublin about 1721, he became a pupil
of John Brooks, who was also the master of James McArdell
and Charles Spooner. He came to London about 1747, and
some of his early plates bear the address "near Drummond's
at Charing Cross". In debt to Robert Sayer the
print-seller, he was arrested and confined to the Fleet
prison; according to Sayer this in order that he might
know where to find the dissipated Houston. He was released
in 1760, on the accession of George III. As a free agent
he was commissioned by Carington Bowles. Cropped and
mounted many years ago, the image is approx. 10 x 7-3/4"
plus margins.

WALT KUHN
[1877-1949]. American painter. An ORIGINAL COOPER etching plate. The title is "TOMS RIVER". Typical
Kuhn style. Plate size 8 x 10 in. This plate still
has some life in it and etchings could be pulled from it. Very
seldom does an original etching plate by an important artist
ever reach the open market, as they usually are in
institutional collections. Provenance: Kuhn Estate. It is
difficult to get a good scan of this and the picture below
isn't very good. He did not etch his initials or signatureinto
the plate. I don't think he ever etched his signature into any
of his plates although he sometimes would etch initials. This
is guaranteed to be an authentic Walt Kuhn plate without a
time limit to the original purchaser. We will send a letter of
guarantee and provenance to the buyer. The portrait photo of
Kuhn shown below is NOT for sale. Kennedy Galleries [NYC] held
an exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints during which it was
indicated that there were less than 50
impressions ever pulled from this plate. Original plates by
major artists seldom reach the open market and it is
remarkable to see a plate that had so few prints pulled from
it. A must for the SERIOUS Kuhn

27. Angela Morgan (1875-1957) American author, poet and journalist. Details of the early life of the Morgan family, which included three other sisters besides Angela and a brother Albert, are somewhat scanty. According to the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan, which has custody of Angela Morgan's earlier papers, she was most likely born circa. 1875 or thereabouts during the time when her family was residing in Yazoo County, Mississippi. Her given name at birth was "Nina Lillian" which she later changed to Angela. According to the Bentley sketch her father was Albert Talmon Morgan, a Quaker, who had left Oberlin College in 1861 to join the Union Army where he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel. After the war he settled as a "carpetbagger" on a plantation in Mississippi where he met and married Carolyn Victoria Highgate (1860-1926), the daughter of a mulatto father and a white mother, and who was a teacher in the Freedmen's Bureau. His experiences in Mississippi during Reconstruction are described in his book Yazoo, Or On the Pickett Line of Freedom in the South (1884). From 1876 until 1885 the family resided in Washington, D.C. The Morgans then moved to Lawrence, Kansas where Col. Morgan engaged in business and in the practice of law. But he proved unsuccessful at both. In 1890 he left his family in Topeka to prospect for gold and silver in Colorado, returning to visit his family only occasionally. He died in Denver on April 15, 1922. After the departure of their father the Morgan sisters formed a quartet, and managed by their brother Albert who also sang baritone, earned their livelihood on the stage by giving musical performances as "The Morgan Sisters" and "The Angela Sisters". The group apparently performed until 1898 when the death of one of the sisters (Helen) and the marriage of the others ended the collaboration. Angela then became a journalist. A major break in her career which permitted her to escape from the drudgery of newspaper work and to devote herself entirely to creative writing occurred in 1915 when a prominent preacher (G. Campbell Morgan) whom she had been assigned to interview, read her poem "God's Man" from his pulpit in New York. This led to its publication in Collier's Weekly, and to the launching of her career as a free lance poet and author. Offered here is a nice 8x10 sepia photograph boldly signed on the front "Faithfully yours Angela Morgan." On the back she has and inscribed it to Rev. Cornelius Greenway, the legendary autograph collector. She adds "And sincere gratitude for your deep appreciation of my poems!". VG............75-100

41. [MUSIC- THEATRE] Gertrude "Gertie" Millar (later Countess of Dudley) (1879-1952) English actress and singer of the early 20th century, known for her performances in Edwardian musical comedies. Beginning her career at age 13, Millar was a prominent star of musical comedies for two decades. She married composer Lionel Monckton, who composed many of her shows and songs that she made famous. After Monckton died in 1924, Millar married the 2nd Earl of Dudley. As a child, Millar performed in London pantomimes, beginning with Babes in the Wood at the St. James Theatre in Manchester, at the age of 13. She started out as a singer and dancer in the music halls of Yorkshire. Later, she moved to London where she was soon earning good notices and better pay appearing in variety show bills. By 1897, she was playing the role of Phyllis Crosby in A Game of Cards at Shodfriars Hall, Boston, England. Next she toured in The New Barmaid in the role of Dora; in The Silver Lining; and as Sadie Pinkhose, the "other woman", in The Lady Detective. In 1899, she played Dandini in Cinderella at the Grand Theatre, Fulham. In the new century, she starred in a series of hit musical comedies produced by George Edwardes. In 1900, she played Isabel Blythe in the touring production of The Messenger Boy. Edwardes's next show was The Toreador in 1901 at the Gaiety Theatre in London. Lionel Monckton, one of the show's composers, had seen Millar in The Messenger Boy and requested that she be given the role of the bridesmaid Cora in the new musical, singing "Keep Off the Grass". She made the song popular and earned a second song, "Captivating Cora", and a third, "I'm not a simple little girl". These hits, and her featured role in A Country Girl (1902), established Millar in London. The Gaiety Theatre closed for renovations in 1902, and the last show at the old theatre was The Linkman; or, Gaiety Memories. Millar starred as Morgiana. She married Monckton in 1902, and he continued to write hit songs for her in subsequent shows. Millar became one of the most photographed women of the Edwardian period. She had top billing as the Hon. Violet Anstruther in The Orchid, the show that opened the new Gaiety (1903; introducing the songs "Little Mary", "Liza Ann", and "Come with me to the zoo"). She starred as Rosalie in The Spring Chicken (1905; singing "Alice sit by the fire" and "The Delights of London") and as Lally in The New Aladdin (1906). She next starred as Mitzi in The Girls of Gottenberg (1907; singing the duet "Two Little Sausages", with Edmund Payne, and the Wagnerian parody "Rhinegold"). Soon afterwards, Edwardes cast her as Franzi at the Hicks Theatre in the English-language production of Ein Walzertraum (A Waltz Dream, 1908) by Oscar Straus. Although Millar was able to sell the light musical comedy songs composed for her at the Gaiety, Oscar Straus's music was too demanding for her small voice, and she was sent to New York to star in the Broadway production of The Girls of Gottenberg. After she returned to London, some of Millar's biggest successes were still in front of her. They included the title role of the hit Gaiety musical, Our Miss Gibbs (1909), with Millar introducing the songs "Moonstruck", "Yorkshire", and "Our farm", all written for her by Monckton. Monckton and Millar then moved to Edwardes' newest theatre, the Adelphi, where she played the title role, Prudence Pym, in another international hit, The Quaker Girl (1910). In this, she popularised the songs "The Quaker Girl", "The Little Grey Bonnet", and "Tony from America". After this, she returned to continental operetta, playing Lady Babby in Edwardes's English language version of Franz Lehár's Zigeunerliebe (Gipsy Love, 1912) at Daly's Theatre . In this role, the musical demands were light and the show was a moderate success. She returned to the Adelphi to play Nancy Joyce in The Dancing Mistress (1912), and back at Daly's she played Kitty Kent in The Marriage Market (1913). This was followed by the role of Nan in a major revival of A Country Girl (1914). She also played Sallie Denbigh in The House of Bondage, a 1914 film. SIGNED postcard size photograph from the play "The Girls of Gottenberg", dated 1908. Approx. 3-1/8 x 5-1/4". VG.........50-75

He introduced it as a bit of by-play in the musical, The Little Michus at Daly's Theatre, London, in 1905. As a result, Graves's little idea became a fad of the season and a competition was mounted to encourage artists to give sketches of what the beast might look like. Charles Folkard won the competition and the Gazeka suddenly appeared in the form of various items of novelty jewellery, charms, etc, and was taken up by Perrier , the sparkling water makers, for a series of advertisements. His verses to King Charles Albert, then prince of Savoy-Carignano, on the birth of his son Victor Emmanuel, attracted the prince's attention and proved the beginning of a long intimacy. As a writer and historian, his most important work during his lifetime was his Economia politica del medio evo (Turin, 1839), which enjoyed great popularity at the time, but is now of little value. His Della schiavitù e del servaggio (Milan, 1868 -1869) gave an account of the development and abolition of slavery and serfdom. 50. [FRANCE] Nicolas de Lamoignon - Nicolas Lamoignon-Bâville (1648-1724) was a French official said to have been accused by Voltaire of instigating the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He made himself famous by the measures he adopted against the Protestants, and by the manner in which he associated himself with the religious policy of Louvois, of which the revocation of the Edict of Nantes was the culminating point. But it is without proof that Voltaire accused him of having instigated this revocation. "I never counselled the revocation of the Edict of Nantes", he wrote to his brother in 1708. On the contrary he considered that "in religion hearts must be attacked, for it is there that it resides", and immediately after the revocation he sent for Bourdaloue to come and evangelize the Protestants of Montpellier. From 1702 to 1704 he helped in the repression of the uprising of the Camisards, occasioned in the Cevennes by English and Calvinistic influences.Document Signed, 1710, 4-pages, 8-1/4 x 12". 61. [FRANCE] Baron de Lagarde - ALS, dated 1714, 1p, about 6-1/2 x 8-3/4. Identification with this letter says: "Toulon 1714. The Marquis of La Velette, Baron de Lagarde went to search for the remains of the famous explorer LA PÉROUSE". A quick attempt at researching Lagarde did not yield anything. La Perouse, however, was quite famous, having died c. 1788. His death, in comparison to the 1714 date of the letter offered here would seem to dispute that Lagarde could have written a letter in 1714 and would still be alive 74 years later. This needs A LOT more research..........100-150

71. [FRANCE] Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse (1681), duc de Penthièvre (1697), (1711), (1678-1737), a legitimated prince of the blood royal, was the son of Louis XIV and of his mistress Françoise-Athénaïs, marquise de Montespan. At the age of five, he became grand admiral of France. In 1693, he became a chevalier des Ordres du roi (Order of the King) and, in 1704, a knight of the Toison d’or. Shortly before his death in 1715, Louis XIV added a codicil to his will stating that if all legitimate members of the House of Bourbon, both those descended from Louis and more distant kinsmen, died out, the throne of France could be inherited by the duc du Maine and the comte de Toulouse. The decision was reversed after the death of Louis XIV when Louis Alexandre's cousin, Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, as the new regent, had the Parlement de Paris void that portion of the will. The comte de Toulouse died at the Château de Rambouillet on 1 December 1737. He was buried in the village 12th century Saint-Lubin church. Offered here is a document signed, 1715, 1p, approx. 6-3/4 x 9". Fine condition. Not translated...........200-300

72. [CIVIL WAR] Eugene
B. Payne (1835-1910). Two page letter
written in pencil, Illinois Legislature, House of
Representative, Springfield, Illinois, 1867. This is
Payne’s own retained copy of his letter to J.F. Farnsworth,
congressman from Illinois and Union general. Payne
is expressing regret that a Dr. [Moses] Evans was
recommended as Post Master of Waukengan, Illinois.
Payne recommends, instead, a Major. Clarkson. Says that
the railroad men want him in the post; says he is a rich man
and does not need the office. Says Clarkson needs
the job. According to the New York Times, April 8, 1910, Payne
was born in Seneca Falls, N.Y. on April 15, 1835. But in
1836 his family, led by his father, Thomas Hubbard Payne,
bought land in northwest Fremont Township, Lake County
Illinois. The large Payne family played crucial political and
economic roles in the development of Lake County, as described
in John J. Halsey’s 1912 History of Lake County, Illinois
(Waukegan, 1912, 432-51). As the son of a pioneer family,
Payne studied in local schools and graduated from the Waukegan
High School (Open Library undocumented online article on
General Payne). In 1860 he was graduated from the law
school of Northwestern University, a member of the first
class, and was “admitted to the bar that same year,” according
to the Times obituary. At the beginning of the Civil War
he organized at Waukegan, Illinois, the first company of Union
infantry troops in Illinois (37th Illinois Infantry Regiment)
and he served with them until September of 1864 when he was
discharged due to his dibilitating malaria (background note,
Payne collection, Clements Library, U. of Michigan). That fall
of 1864 he was elected to the Illinois state
legislature. Payne was wounded and ill following
his participation in the July 1863 Vicksburg campaign and
victory. His service after the spring of 1862 is
documented in the Payne collection at the Clements Library, U.
of Michigan. The background note for that collection
states that Payne thought that the December 1862 Prairie Grove
battle as equally significant to that at Pea Ridge. By
the end of the war, and after playing a role in an important
Rio Grande campaign and returning in early 1864 to Illinois to
recruit, he was mustered out in September 1864 at the rank of
Brigadier General. He was the first soldier from Lake
County, Illinois to achieve the rank of general. After
the war he served in the legislature to 1868, on the
Republican ticket. The Times obituary says that he
practiced law for seventeen years. The Open Library article
reports that he lived and practiced in Waukegan and in
Evanston, Illinois to 1887. In 1885 A.T. Andreas in his
History of Chicago, v. 1, 203, lists Payne as a resident of
Chicago, “among respected and beloved citizens” who fought
with the 37th Regiment. Late in life, after retiring
from the bar, Payne “was made an officer of the U.S. Pension
Bureau,” Washington, DC, according to the Times
obituary.............80-120

[ART] Gwen Raverat
(1885-1957) English wood engraver who was a founder member
of the Society of Wood Engravers. She was the granddaughter of
the naturalist Charles Darwin and the first cousin of the poet
Frances Cornford. She married the French painter Jacques
Raverat in 1911. They were active in the Bloomsbury Group and
Rupert Brooke's Neo-Pagan group until they moved to the south
of France, where they lived in Vence, near Nice, until his
death from multiple sclerosis in 1925. Raverat was one of the
very first wood engravers recognised as modern. She went to
the Slade School in 1908, but stood outside the groups growing
up at the time, the group that gathered around Eric Gill at
Ditchling and the group that grew up at the Central School of
Arts and Crafts around Noel Rooke. She was influenced by the
Impressionists and Post-Impressionists and developed her own
painterly style of engraving. There was some similarity
between her early engravings and those of Gill, and she did
know Gill, but the similarity was based mostly on her black
line style at the time, influenced by Lucien Pissarro, and the
semi-religious themes that she then chose. Balston credits her
with having produced one of the first two books illustrated
with modern wood engravings. This was Spring Morning
by her cousin Frances Cornford, published by the Poetry
Bookshop in 1915. It was accessioned at the British Library in
May 1915, which makes it the first modern book illustrated
with wood engravings, as the other contender, The Devil's
Devices illustrated by Eric Gill, was accessioned in December
1915. Original wood-engraving, image is 4-1/8 x 6" plus
margins. The title: "CHILD-STEALERS." Fine...........75-100

123. RAYMOND ROBINS [1873-1954] Am. Social economist. Colonel Robins had a colorful career. At the age of 17 he worked in coal and lead mines, and went to the Klondike in search of gold. There, as a minister and a social worker, he founded a church and a hospital. He studied law in Washington, D.C. and became a social economist. As his fame and reputation grew, he was much in demand as a speaker in universities and colleges. Colonel Robins served as an economic advisor to five presidents. He was honored with the title of colonel for his work with the American Red Cross in Russia during the First World War. When the Russian Revolution broke out, he was the sole Allied representative in Russia. Through his work with the Red Cross, he became acquainted with Lenin and Trotsky, and debated endlessly with Lenin the virtues of democracy as opposed to communism. In 1918, Mrs. Robins plated an acorn on the Chinsegut grounds as the Colonel met with Lenin in Russia. When Mrs. Robins told the Colonel of the planting, he responded, "If it grows, we will call it the Lenin Oak." The Lenin Oak stands majestically on the grounds today. Chinsegut Hill became the residence of Colonel and Mrs. Robins. Gardner was the candidate of the Know-Nothing movement, and was elected governor as part of the sweeping victory of Know-Nothing candidates in the Massachusetts elections of 1854. In line with the nativist and anti-Catholic politics of the Know-Nothing movement, Gardner proposed an amendment to the Massachusetts state constitution banning appropriations of tax funds to Catholic schools, which was passed by the state legislature and ratified after it was approved by referendum. During Gardner's term in office, Anthony Burns was arrested in Boston under the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. Edward G. Loring, a Suffolk County probate judge who also as served U.S. commissioner of the Circuit Court in Massachusetts, ordered that Burns be forced back into slavery in Virginia, outraging abolitionists and the increasingly antislavery public in Massachusetts. Under the pressure of a public petition campaign spearheaded by William Lloyd Garrison , the legislature passed two Bills of Address calling for Judge Loring to be removed from his state office, in 1855 and 1856, but in both cases Gardner declined to remove Loring. 156 [FRANCE] Jules
Gervais-Courtellemont (1863 - 1931)
French photographer who was famous for taking color
autochromes during World War I. He was born in the province of
Seine-et-Marne, near Paris, but grew up in Algeria, where he
developed a passion for the pre-colonial Orient and devoted
most of his professional career in search of the exotic. In
1894 converted to Islam prior to making a pilgrimage to Mecca.
Images collected in Turkey, Palestine, Egypt, Tunisia, Spain,
India, Morocco and China formed the basis for his popular
illustrated lectures, which he illustrated with lantern
slides. With the outbreak of World War I, Courtellemont
returned to his home province to record the war. After the
war, Courtellemont began working for an American publication.
He eventually became a photographer for National Geographic.
In 1911, Courtellemont opened the "Palais de l'autochromie" in
Paris, which comprised an exhibition hall, studio, laboratory,
and lecture hall with a seating capacity of 250. It was in
this hall that Courtellemont would project his autochromes
both of the Orient and, after 1914, of the war, particularly
the Marne battlefields. These lectures proved to be so popular
that Courtellemont issued a twelve-part series later bound in
book form called The Battle of Marne and later a four-part
series entitled The Battle of Verdun. These are the first
books ever published in color on war. Between 1923 and
1925 he wrote a three-volume work entitled La Civilisation –
Histoire sociale de l'humanité, illustrated with his
photographs. He was a lifelong friend of the novelist,
Orientalist and photographer Pierre Loti. While over 5,500
Gervais-Courtellemont autochromes survive in various
institutional collections, his work in private hands is quite
rare and sought after. Courtellemon died in 1931. His German
counterpart is Hans Hildenbrand. ALS, c. 1910,
written on both sides of 7 x 9 sheet. To M. Brunet. Speaks
of Islam in Bosnia. VG............100-150

171. Gerald
Massey (1828-1907) English poet and
self-educated Egyptologist. During the later years of his
life, (from about 1870 onwards) Massey became interested
increasingly in Egyptology and the similarities that exist
between ancient Egyptian mythology and the Gospel stories. He
studied the extensive Egyptian records housed in the British
Museum, eventually teaching himself to decipher the
hieroglyphics." In regard to Egyptology, Massey first published
The Book of the Beginnings, followed by The Natural Genesis. His
most prolific work is Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World,
published shortly before his death.[1] His work, which draws
comparisons between the Judeo-Christian religion and the
Egyptian religion, is not considered significant in the field of
modern Egyptology and is not mentioned in the Oxford
Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt or similar reference works of
modern Egyptology. One of the more sensational aspects of
Massey's writings were the parallels he drew between Jesus and
the Egyptian god Horus. These comparisons are primarily
contained in his book The Natural Genesis. Massey's writings on
this subject have influenced various later authors such as Alvin
Boyd Kuhn, Tom Harpur, and Acharya S. ALS, nd, written
on both sides, approx. 5x8". Content - about his poems.

Painesville and Ashtabula RailRoad. Offered here is a stock

once on front and twice on vero.
In 1851, the railroad between Columbus and Cleveland
was completed, and the course of trade was almost entirely
diverted from its old channels. The business of Milan fell
away rapidly, and the forwarding trade at that point was
completely at an end, Mr. Ely closed up his connection with
the place in the Spring of 1852, and removed to Cleveland,
where he had engaged a warehouse with the intention of
continuing in the forwarding business, but was induced to take
the secretaryship of the Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula
Railroad, many of his old business and personal friends having
become interested in that undertaking and desiring the benefit
of his business tact and experience. About a year after his
accession to the company, the offices of secretary and
treasurer were combined, and Mr. Ely assumed charge of the
joint offices. Three years later he was elected a director of
the company. At various times he has been chosen
vice-president of the company. In 1868, he was elected
president of the Cleveland and Toledo Railroad Company,
retaining that position until the consolidation of the company
with the Cleveland and Erie Railroad Company, and the
formation of the Lake Shore Railroad Company...........35-45

Paper size approx. 11x 15 in., watercolor image size approx. 3.5 x 7 in. with text. Very good condition. RE: Titled "STOVE", the text recounts De Koonings' practice of getting started on a blank canvas. "I've read that De Kooning was afraid to look at a blank canvas. Sometimes to get started he would look around the room and fix on an object - a stove a table, a chair, and write the word "chair", for instance across the canvas so it wouldn't be blank anymore. At this time there were two groups of abstract expressionists. The other was more structured and probably the forerunners of minimalism and late conceptualism. I liked his group better although lately I have removed all the furniture from the studio, I kept the stove, and in the evenings when it is cold I sit in front of it to keep warm."............700-900

Dr John Pye-Smith FRS, FGS
(1774-1851) was a Congregational theologian and tutor,
associated with reconciling geological sciences with the
Bible, Repeal of the Corn Laws and abolition. He was the
author of many learned works. OFFERED HERE is an
UNSIGNED AUTOGRAPH NOTE - "The books which
I have referring to Aug. Hermann Franke. .." Follows is a
short list of books. Mounted to larger sheet identifying the

John Pye-Smith was Theological Tutor at Homerton College near
Hackney, London for forty-five years between 1805 and 1850,
and minister of the Old Gravel Pit Chapel in Chatham Place,
Hackney for nearly as long (1811-50). His pupils included
Robert Halley (future Principal of New College, London),
Samuel Dyer the missionary, and William Johnson Fox of the
South Place Ethical Society. The son of a Sheffield
bookseller, he was surrounded by books in his youth and,
practically self-taught, rose not only to become a dissenting
academic and author, but through his interest in science and
geology, was elected to become the first Fellow of the Royal
Society from a nonconformist background. He was also elected a
Fellow of the Geological Society at a time when there was
considerable debate about accepting the idea of geological
time, and if so to find ways of reconciling this with the
teachings of the Old Testament. During the politically
turbulent 1790s, before moving to London he had taken over the
editorship of the Sheffield Iris, the leading abolitionist
newspaper in the North of England, during imprisonment of its
editor, his friend James Montgomery. In 1830 Dr Pye Smith took
the Chair of The Board of Congregational Ministers when it
passed an anti-slavery motion to secure support from all
Congregational chapels across the country in petitioning
parliament:That we feel it to be a solemn duty to employ our
influence with our congregations and the public, to promote
petitions to both Houses of Parliament for the abolition of
Colonial Slavery, and therefore pledge ourselves, and beg to
recommend to our brethren throughout the kingdom to prepare
from each congregation such petitions to parliament... The
Congregationalists' 1833 abolition lecture, The Sinfulness of
Colonial Slavery, was delivered at John Pye-Smith's Meeting
House in Hackney by his former pupil, Robert Halley Dr John
Pye Smith died in Hackney in 1851 and is buried below a marble
chest tomb monument in Dr Watts' Walk, at the
Congregationalists' non-denominational garden cemetery in the
grounds of Abney Park, Stoke Newington.. [2] ROUNDELL PALMER - 1st Earl of

305. [ASTRONOMY]
HERSCHEL, Sir William (1738-1822), German-born British
astronomer, who made many important contributions to astronomy.
Originally named Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel, he was born in
Hannover, Germany. At the age of 19 he went to England, working
as a music teacher and organist but devoting all his spare time
to the study of astronomy and mathematics. Unable to procure
adequate instruments, he constructed and constantly improved his
own telescopes. In 1774, with the aid of his sister Caroline
(also an astronomer), he began a comprehensive and systematic
survey of the heavens. In 1781 he discovered a new planet, which
he named Georgium Sidus in honor of George III, king of Great
Britain, but which is now universally called Uranus (q.v.) . A
year later he was appointed private astronomer to the king, a
position that enabled him to devote all his time to his
astronomic pursuits. He erected a telescope at Slough with a
48-in. (1.22-m) mirror and a focal length of 40 ft (12.2 m).
Using this, he discovered two satellites of Uranus and the sixth
and seventh satellites of Saturn (q.v.) . He studied the
rotation period of many planetsand the motion of double stars,
and also cataloged more than 800 double stars ( see Star). He
studied nebulas, contributing new information on their
constitution and increasing the number of observed nebulas from
about 100 to 2500. Herschel was the first to propose that these
nebulas were composed of stars. He was elected to the Royal
Society in 1781 and knighted in 1816. He is considered the
founder of sidereal astronomy. ENGRAVED PORTRAIT, c. 1853.

328. [FRANCE] Jean Soanen (1647–1740) French Oratorian and bishop of Senez. He was a convinced Jansenist. In opposition to the papal bull Unigenitus, he with Charles-Joachim Colbert, bishop of Montpellier, Pierre de la Broue who was bishop of Mirepoix, and Pierre de Langle who was bishop of Boulogne, appealed against it in 1717 to a general council. This group and their followers were known as Appellants; the council was though entirely hypothetical as an idea. Later, he sent out a pastoral letter to his congregation, urging the reading of Pasquier Quesnel. Pierre Guérin de Tencin, the archbishop of Embrun, then in 1727 had him exiled from his diocese. But Jean Soanen of Senez, a small mountain diocese in Provence, issued in 1726 a Pastoral instruction to his diocese, in which, at the age of 80, he reviewed his whole position in the controversy. He regretted that he had ever signed the Formulary of 1665, withdrew his adhesion to the Bull "Vineam Domini Sabaoth", blamed himself for prohibiting, against his real convictions, the moral Reflexions, and promised never to accept the Unigenitus. Soanen was deprived of his see by the Provincial Synoid of Embrun, which on carious canonical grounds he refused to recognize, and was banished to the abbey of Chaise Dieu in Auvergne, where he remained imprisoned till his death in 1740, at the age of 95. inventor, born at Litchfield, Connecticut. In 1874–78 he had
charge of the photographic laboratory at Cornell University. He
moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where in 1885 he was one of
the founding members of the Photographic Society of
Philadelphia. He was awarded The Franklin Institute's
Elliott Cresson Medal in 1893, the Edward Longstreth Medal in
1903, and the John Scott Medal in 1887, 1890, 1904 and
1906. His son Herbert E. Ives was a pioneer of television and
telephotography, including color facsimile. Ives was a pioneer
in the field of color photography. He first demonstrated a
system of natural color photography at the 1885 Novelties
Exposition of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.[3] His
fully developed Kromskop (long-vowel marks over both "o"s and
pronounced "chrome-scope") color photography system was
commercially available in England by late 1897 and in the US
about a year later. In 1903 Ives patented the parallax
stereogram, the first "no glasses" autostereoscopic 3-D display
technology. As early as 1900, Ives was tinkering with
stereoscopic motion pictures. By 1922, he and fellow inventor
Jacob Leventhal were producing a popular series of anaglyph 3-D
novelty shorts called Plastigrams. Ives is sometimes
referred to as "the" inventor of "the" halftone process, but
this is incorrect and Ives never made such a claim for
himself. Offered here is an undated biography sheet on
which he pens biographical information, signed. 8.5 x 11".
