1. William Pope Duval (1784-1854)
was the first civilian governor of Florida Territory,
succeeding Andrew Jackson who had been military governor. In
his twelve-year governorship, from 1822 to 1834, he divided
Florida into four territories, established the local court
system, and chose Tallahassee as the territory’s capital
because of its central location. Duval County, where
Jacksonville is located, and Duval Street in Key West are
named for him. He was born in Virginia he was inclined
to be somewhat wild in his youth. While young (age 14)
he decided to go to Kentucky and told his father, who
remarked, “If I give you a Negro you will sell him the first
chance and spend the money you get for him; if I give you a
horse you will bet him off at the first horse race you see,
and if I give you a pocket full of money you will bet it off
or give it away. You love a gun and would not part with that.”
With a light heart he left home telling his family he wouldn’t
come back until he was a member of Congress. So he
walked to Kentucky. He arrived at Bardstown, Ky. and studied
law, fell in love and married the daughter of Col. Andrew
Hynes. Col. Hynes was the founder of Elizabethtown, which was
named after his wife. Having sown his wild oats he began to
practice law in Elizabethtown. As there were no lawyers there,
he was appointed County Attorney of Hardin County. In 1812 he
ran for congress and was so popular that no one opposed him.
He served in congress, 1813-14. On his first trip to
Washington he visited his relatives in Virginia for the first
time since leaving, thus verifying his promise not to return
until he was a congressman. In 1822 he was appointed Gov. of
Florida by President Monroe, and re-appointed by Presidents
Adams and Jackson. Offered here is an ADS, 1812, legal
document concerning debt and Bleakley and Montgomery. These
two men opened the first general store in Elizabethtown, Ky.,
doing much business with Thomas Lincoln, father of the future
president. Approx. 7-1/2 x 6-1/4 in. VG. Quite RARE!.

4. (ART) (JASPER JOHNS) original multiple. New York. Museum of Modern Art. Text by Riva Castleman Technics and Creativity Gemini GEL, 1971, 10.5 x 8.5 in. stiff wrappers in plastic clamshell box. 108 pp. 364 mostly thumbnail illustrations (20 full size in color), bibliography, index of artists. A Catalogue raisonne (to early 1971), published in a boxed edition of 22,500, with its problematic Jasper Johns "Target," an offset lithograph with applique paintbrush and three watercolor disks, in addition to the print , which is glued to the inside front cover of the box). Box also contains the catalog, a sheet of protective foam. The foam sheet is normally discolored and usually has three circular offprints from the watercolor disks. According to Richard S. Field ("Jasper Johns Prints 1970-1977"), the image was derived from a pencil drawing and collage of 1960 in the Sonnabend collection. A hand-pulled edition of 50 copies and six artists proofs was printed by Kenneth Tyler at Gemini in 1971. The offset edition was produced by Graphic Press, Los Angeles. Johns's participation in this enterprise was, at best, limited to the Gemini printing, which was hand-signed and numbered. The signature on the MoMA target was mechanically reproduced [the one offered here]. If it appears to have been signed in ink or pencil, forgery is indicated. The white clamshell box is spotted but intact. The other main factor involving this multiple is the condition of the offset target lithograph. As is often the case a former owner has wetted the watercolor blocks and started to paint the target but has only painted a small part in yellow. The brush is often missing as is missing here. VG condition.............300-400

(Myddleton) Biddulph [1809-1878] He entered the Army as a Cornet (1st Life Guards) in 1826. On his promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1857 he went on half pay. He was later appointed Master of the Queen's Household, and then Receiver-General of the Duchy of Cornwall. In 1867 he was appointed Keeper of the Queen's Privy Purse. Sir Thomas had enjoyed the Queen's trust and confidence for 27 years, but there had been one occasion when he had threatened to resign, because of rows with John Brown, the Queen's personal gillie and favourite. It is on record that the Queen made gentle fun of Sir Thomas behind his back: with roars of laughter she told Sir Henry Ponsonby how shocked Sir Thomas had been by the design for a medal of the Ashanti campaign and she quoted his comment, "Roman soldiers with nothing - nothing at all - but helmets on." However, Sir Thomas was not without a sense of humour: in 1871, when the Queen was gravely ill with an abscess on her arm, Lady Churchill wanted to send for all her children. "Goodness", said Sir Thomas, "that would have killed her at once!" Two [2] ALSs, 1874 and 1876, each 1p. 8. [ART] RALPH BAKSHI - American
animator/draftsman. In the late 1950s & early 1960s
he worked at CBS-Terrytoons on such series as "Heckle
and Jeckle" and "Mighty Mouse." From there he went to
Famous Studios-Paramount, where he directed countless
"Casper the Friendly Ghost" and "Little Audrey"
cartoons, among others. During the 1960s he also
animated Peter Max's commercials. When Famous Studios
closed in 1967, Bakshi went into partnership with Steve
Krantz. Their first venture was "Fritz the Cat",
released in 1972. The success of "Fritz" prompted "Heavy
Traffic" [1973], a funny-sad chronicle of life in New
York's slums. Striking out on his own, Bakshi produced
the sometimes brilliant, often disappointing "Coonskin"
[1974]; also "Wizards" [1977]; "Lord of the Rings"
[1978]. Ralph Bakshi occupies a somewhat ambiguous
position in the animation world. He is one of the more
original artists at work in the animated cartoon medium.
He has become a cult figure. ORIGINAL Ink drawing,

during the American Civil War. He was one of two Ohio brothers

“Fighting McCooks” for their contributions to the war effort.
With the outbreak of the Civil War, McCook, although 63 years
old, volunteered his services to the Union. He was
commissioned as a major and paymaster. When Confederate Brig.
Gen. John H. Morgan led his troops through southern Ohio
during Morgan's Raid, Major McCook joined in the advance of
the Union pursuit. Early in the morning of July 19, 1863,
Federal troops attacked Morgan at Buffington Island, where the
Confederates were planning to cross the Ohio River back into
Kentucky. McCook was shot and mortally wounded. He died two

Uncle of
Abraham Lincoln
17. Kentucky Pioneer
document dated 1805, summons for Williamson Bruce to appear
before the Judges of Hardin County [Elizabethtown] Kentucky.
They are to answer William Bush plaintiff. William Bush,
brother of Sarah who was Abraham Lincoln's step-mother,
therefore William Bush was Abe's uncle by marriage. This
document was written and signed by the noted Kentucky pioneer,
Ben Helm. Also signed by William Bush on the verso. BEN HELM (b.
Fairfax county, Va., May 8, 1767; son of Capt. Thomas Helm,
apioneer settler of Kentucky, who moved from Virginia to the
Falls of Ohio, in the fall of 1779. In 1801-03 Ben Helm erected
the first brick house built there. He became a surveyor; was
state senator, 1796-1800; clerk of the Hardin county courts,
1800-17; an officer with the rank of major in the war of 1812;
filled various other offices of honor and trust in Kentucky:
purchased the farm owned by Christopher Bush, father of Mrs.
Sarah (Bush) Johnston Lincoln, step-mother of Abraham Lincoln,
and was a partner in a general store with Duff Green [later,
American statesman], conducting the business as Green &
Helm. He died in Elizabethtown, 1858, nearly 91 years
old.Apparently William Bush was somewhat of a troublemaker in
the E-town area. He was born in 1763, and in 1828 he acquired
the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had lived, before they
left for Indiana. His sister, Sarah, became the step-mother of
the future U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln. See the article THAT
ROGUE, WILLIAM BUSH, by Blaine V. Houmes, the Iowa physician and
collector of Lincolniana. This article appears in The
MANUSCRIPT, Summer 2002. William Bush acquired land like his
parents, and by 1817 had married and built an attractive brick
house [Elizabethtown area], a sign of sure success. He served on
jury duty with Thomas Lincoln, after of Abraham and acquired the
Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had lived, before they left
for Indiana∞, and later Illinois. Although prosperous, he was
frequently entangled in lawsuits. His reputation was guarded and
he did not enjoy the respect of other members of the Bush
family. Little is known of Lincoln's relationship with the Bush
family. Lincoln claimed that his family's removal (to Indiana)
was partly on account of slavery, but chiefly on account of the
difficulty in land titles in Kentucky. Thomas Lincoln was known
to be anti-slavery, and as a young boy Abraham probably observed
slaves being taken in chains to Southern markets, on the road
beside his home. Carl Sandburg and other historians have not
dwelt on the cantankerous nature of the President's uncle by
marriage, let alone the fact that there was a slave-trader in
the family. We wish to give credit to Blaine Houmes for much of
what appears in this description. Approx. 6-1/8 x 7-1/2
in. Rare!............400-600

x 10". The original was sent to the Secretary of the Navy,
Washington DC [Benjamin F. Tracy]. This "copy" letter was
sent to Henry
Lyon, who
became commander of the Nipsic. Dated about a month after
this famous naval incident (The
Samoan Crisis ). This letter is of high praise for
Lieut. Commander Henry W. Lyon, saving the Nipsic "...to
his excellent service during the Hurricane of March 16th
and 17th, 1889, and since then in saving valuable
property from the wreck. During the gale, he
intelligently carried out my orders; personally
supervising the many plans to keep out water, getting
lines to the Vaudalia to prevent the total destruction
of the Trenton and many other duties besides..." Norman Von Heidreich Farquhar (1840-1907) was born
in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, attended the U.S. Naval
Academy during 1854-59. After graduation, he served with the
Africa Squadron until September 1861. Lieutenant Farquhar spent
most of the Civil War off the U.S. Atlantic coast and in the
West Indies, serving in the gunboats Mystic, Sonoma and Mahaska
and the cruisers Rhode Island and Santiago de Cuba. He was
promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in mid-1865, a few
months after the fighting ended, and was on duty at the U.S.
Naval Academy from then until September 1868. For the rest of
the 1860s and into the next decade, Farquhar served in the
warship Swatara, was Executive Officer of USS Severn and USS
Powhatan and Commanding Officer of USS Kansas. He also had two
tours at the Boston Navy Yard on ordnance duty and as Executive

in rank to Commander in December 1872, Farquhar spent nearly
five years at the Naval Academy. He commanded the training ship
Portsmouth in 1877-78, and the steam sloops Quinnebaug and
Wyoming in European waters in 1878-1881. Five more years of
Naval Academy duty were followed by torpedo instruction at
Newport, Rhode Island, in 1886. From May 1887 until her loss in
the March 1889 Samoan hurricane, Captain Farquhar commanded the
steam frigate Trenton. He then served on several of the Navy's
boards and, in March 1890 became the Chief of the Bureau of
Yards and Docks. During 1894-97, he was Commandant of the
Philadelphia Navy Yard, Commanding Officer of the cruiser
Newark, and President of the Naval Examining Board. While holding the ranks of
Commodore and Rear Admiral, Farquhar was Commandant of the
Norfolk Navy Yard in 1897-99, commanded the North Atlantic
Station during 1899-1901 and was Chairman of the Lighthouse
Board in 1901-02. He retired from active duty in April 1902,

29. Eleazar Lipa Sukenik
(1889-1953) Israeli archaeologist and professor at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem. In Israel his first name is popularly
known as "Eliezer". Having arrived in Palestine in
1911 he worked as a school teacher and tour guide. He
participated in the "War of the Languages" that erupted among
Zionist activists in Palestine in 1913. He served in the
British army in World War I in the 40th Battalion of the Royal
Fusiliers which became known as the Jewish Legion. In
addition to his important excavations in Jerusalem (including
the "Third Wall" and numerous ossuary tombs) he played a central
role in the establishment of the Department of Archaeology of
the Hebrew University. He recognized the importance of the Dead
Sea Scrolls to Israel and worked for the Israeli state to buy
them. In 1948, he published an article tentatively linking the
scrolls and their content to a community of Essenes, which
became the standard interpretation of the origin of the scrolls,
a theory that is still probably the consensus among scholars,
but has also been widely questioned. Offered here is a

[ART] Alexander Liberman (1912-1999)
Russian-American magazine editor, publisher, painter,
photographer, and sculptor. He held senior artistic positions
during his 32 years at Condé Nast Publications. When his
father took a post advising the Soviet government, the family
moved to Moscow. Life there became difficult, and his father
secured permission from Lenin and the Politburo to take his
son to London in 1921. Young Liberman was educated in Russia,
England, and France, where he took up life as a "White Émigré"
in Paris. He began his publishing career in Paris with
the early pictorial magazine Vu, where he worked under Lucien
Vogel and with photographers such as Brassaï, André Kertész,
and Robert Capa. After emigrating to New York in 1941, he
began working for Condé Nast Publications, rising to the
position of editorial director, which he held from 1962-1994.
Only in the 1950s did Liberman take up painting and, later,
metal sculpture. His highly recognizable sculptures are
assembled from industrial objects (segments of steel I-beams,
pipes, drums, and such), often painted in uniform bright
colors. Prominent examples of his work are in the collections
of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Storm King Art Center,
Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Pyramid Hill Sculpture
Park, Tate Gallery, and the Guggenheim Museum. His massive
work "The Way", a 65 feet x 102 feet x 100 feet

became a signature piece of Laumeier Sculpture Park, and a
major landmark of St. Louis, Missouri. Offered here

44. [ART] Richard Carline (1896-1980 ) Painter, writer and administrator, Carline was born in Oxford. His father, George Carline, his mother, Anne, and brother Sydney, his sister Hilda (Mrs Stanley Spencer) and his wife, Nancy, were all painters. Carline in 1913 attended Percyval Tudor-Hart's Academie de Peinture, in Paris. After a short period teaching, Carline served in World War I and was appointed an Official War Artist. With his brother he became noted for war pictures from the air. He was elected LG in 1920, at which time the Carlines' Hampstead home became a centre for artists such as Henry Lamb, John Nash and Mark Gertler. During this period Carline was clearly influenced by Stanley Spencer, transforming everyday scenes into something monumental. Carline achieved this, however, without exaggerating form or gestures to the degree that Spencer did. Between 1924 and 1929 Carline taught at the Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford. He had his first solo show at Goupil Gallery in 1931. The mid-1930s saw Carline involved in Negro art, organising a show at Adams Gallery in 1935, and contributing the main text to Arts of West Africa, edited by Michael Sadler. During World War II Carline supervised camouflage of factories and airfields. He was involved in AIA, helping to found the Hampstead Artists' Council in 1944. In 1946-47 he was appointed as the first Art Counsellor to UNESCO, and from 1955 to 1974 was chief examiner in art for the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. His books include Pictures in the Post: the Story of the Picture Postcard, 1959; Draw They Must, 1968; and Stanley Spencer at War, 1978. In 1975 the D'Offay Gallery held a Richard Carline exhibition for which the artist wrote the foreword. Carline died in Hampstead and in 1983 Camden Arts Centre organised a memorial exhibition. The Imperial War Museum holds his work, including the outstanding and pioneering series of paintings, from World War I, based on observations made from aeroplanes. Offered here is a lengthy ALS, 1970, written to the artist, Dr. Frederick Solomon (1899-1980) German Expressionist artist who died in New Hampshire USA. Solomon won the Mowbray Prize [1944] in London; was listed in WHO'S WHO IN ART [1954 London edition]. He studied art with such famous German artist's as: Max Liebermann, Martin Brandenburg, Eugene Spiro & Willy Jaeckel [Masterclass]. Exhibitions: Berlin, Cologne, Capetown, Haifa, London [Royal Academy], U.S., and in 1958 had one-man show at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba. In 1956 several of his paintings were exhibited at the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio. The letter shows that Carline and Solomon were longtime friends. Fine condition. ORIGINAL COOPER etching plate. The
title is "TOMS RIVER". Typical Kuhn style. Plate size 8 x 10
in. This plate still has some life in it and etchings
could be pulled from it. Very seldom does an original etching
plate by an important artist ever reach the open market, as they
usually are in institutional collections. Provenance: Kuhn
Estate. It is difficult to get a good scan of this and the
picture below isn't very good. He did not etch his initials or
signatureinto the plate. I don't think he ever etched his
signature into any of his plates although he sometimes would
etch initials. This is guaranteed to be an authentic Walt Kuhn
plate without a time limit to the original purchaser. We will
send a letter of guarantee and provenance to the buyer. The
portrait photo of Kuhn shown below is NOT for sale. Kennedy
Galleries [NYC] held an exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints during
which it was indicated that there were less
than 50 impressions ever pulled from this plate. Original

Shusaku Arakawa - Dadaist Conceptualist Shusaku Arakawa was born in Nagoya, Japan, on July 6, 1936. He studied medicine and mathematics at Tokyo University from 1954 to 1958, and art at the Musashino College of Art, Tokyo, before completing his degree he left Japan. In 1958 he began submitting paintings to the Yomiuri Independent exhibitions and in 1961 held his first solo exhibition at Mudo Gallery, Tokyo. In 1960, he started a neo-Dada group, programming Happenings, and later gaining recognition with a series of boxes. In 1962, he came to New York and created a new series, "Diagram," in which silhouettes of combs, footprints, tennis rackets, arrows and refrigerators were arranged on canvas. Gradually he replaced the silhouettes with words only. Throughout the 1960s he had a number of solo exhibitions at Dwan Gallery, New York and Los Angeles, at Galerie Schmela, Dsseldorf, and Galleria Schwartz, Milan. In 1966 he was given his first museum exhibition at the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands, and in 1970 represented Japan at the Venice Biennale. During the 1970s museums featured his work throughout Europe and the United States and in 1981 a large retrospective was organized by the Stdtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich. With his wife, the poet Madeline H. Gins, Arakawa has also published books that "parallel the preoccupations of his paintings," in particular The Mechanism of Meaning (1979). In 1991 a retrospective was organized by the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Arakawa and Gins increasingly concentrate on collaborative installation pieces and architectural design, such as the Utopian City of Reversible destiny seen at the Guggenheim Soho in 1997. Arakawa denies, like all Conceptualists and Pop Art neo-Dadaists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, the artist's hand in his paintings. Expressionistic or emotive marks on the canvas are few, serving only as a foil to the deadpan, depersonalized, mechanical style. Paintings such as "Out of distance/Out of texture" appear to be aimed at the intellect devoid of feeling for life, poetry or spirituality."...............450-650

[CIVIL WAR] Eugene B. Payne (1835-1910).
Two page letter written in pencil, Illinois Legislature, House
of Representative, Springfield, Illinois, 1867. This is
Payne’s own retained copy of his letter to J.F. Farnsworth,
congressman from Illinois and Union general. Payne
is expressing regret that a Dr. [Moses] Evans was
recommended as Post Master of Waukengan, Illinois.
Payne recommends, instead, a Major. Clarkson. Says that
the railroad men want him in the post; says he is a rich man and
does not need the office. Says Clarkson needs the
job. According to the New York Times, April 8, 1910, Payne was
born in Seneca Falls, N.Y. on April 15, 1835. But in 1836
his family, led by his father, Thomas Hubbard Payne, bought land
in northwest Fremont Township, Lake County Illinois. The large
Payne family played crucial political and economic roles in the
development of Lake County, as described in John J. Halsey’s
1912 History of Lake County, Illinois (Waukegan, 1912, 432-51).
As the son of a pioneer family, Payne studied in local schools
and graduated from the Waukegan High School (Open Library
undocumented online article on General Payne). In 1860 he
was graduated from the law school of Northwestern University, a
member of the first class, and was “admitted to the bar that
same year,” according to the Times obituary. At the
beginning of the Civil War he organized at Waukegan, Illinois,
the first company of Union infantry troops in Illinois (37th
Illinois Infantry Regiment) and he served with them until
September of 1864 when he was discharged due to his dibilitating
malaria (background note, Payne collection, Clements Library, U.
of Michigan). That fall of 1864 he was elected to the Illinois
state legislature. Payne was wounded and ill
following his participation in the July 1863 Vicksburg campaign
and victory. His service after the spring of 1862 is
documented in the Payne collection at the Clements Library, U.
of Michigan. The background note for that collection
states that Payne thought that the December 1862 Prairie Grove
battle as equally significant to that at Pea Ridge. By the
end of the war, and after playing a role in an important Rio
Grande campaign and returning in early 1864 to Illinois to
recruit, he was mustered out in September 1864 at the rank of
Brigadier General. He was the first soldier from Lake
County, Illinois to achieve the rank of general. After the
war he served in the legislature to 1868, on the Republican
ticket. The Times obituary says that he practiced law for
seventeen years. The Open Library article reports that he lived
and practiced in Waukegan and in Evanston, Illinois to
1887. In 1885 A.T. Andreas in his History of Chicago, v.
1, 203, lists Payne as a resident of Chicago, “among respected
and beloved citizens” who fought with the 37th Regiment.
Late in life, after retiring from the bar, Payne “was made an
officer of the U.S. Pension Bureau,” Washington, DC, according
to the Times obituary.............80-120

59. [FILM] Bruce
Bennett (1906-2007) American
actor and Olympic silver medalist shot putter. During
the 1930s, he went by his real name, Herman Brix. He
moved to Los Angeles in 1929 after being invited to compete
for the Los Angeles Athletic Club and befriended actor
Douglas Fairbanks Jr., who arranged a screen test for him at
Paramount. In 1931, MGM, adapting author Edgar Rice
Burroughs's popular Tarzan adventures for the screen,
selected Herman Brix to play the title character.
Unfortunately, Brix broke his shoulder filming the 1931
football movie Touchdown, which also prevented his entry
into the 1932 Olympics, still holding the world record for
shot put. Swimming champion Johnny Weissmuller replaced Brix
and became a major star. After Ashton Dearholt convinced
Burroughs to allow him to form Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises,
Inc., and make a Tarzan serial film, Dearholt cast Brix in
the lead. Pressbook copy has it that Burroughs made the
choice himself, but, in fact, in his biography, Brix
confirmed that Burroughs never even saw him until after the
contract was signed, and then only briefly. The film was
begun on location in Guatemala, under rugged conditions
(jungle diseases and cash shortages were frequent). Brix did
his own stunts, including a fall to rocky cliffs below. The
Washington Post quoted Gabe Essoe's passage from his book
Tarzan of the Movies: "Brix's portrayal was the only time
between the silents and the 1960s that Tarzan was accurately
depicted in films. Brief ALS, 2001 mentioning he is 95

His attitude on various questions became gradually more Liberal, and his support of Catholic emancipation lost him his seat in 1826. He was then raised to the peerage as Baron Wharncliffe of Wortley, a recognition both of his previous parliamentary activity and of his high position among the country gentlemen. Haycraft, the Ky. historian, gives the following account: "Dan
Vertrees was a stalwart young man of daring. He, with the late
Colonel Nicholas Miller and others, were pursuing a band of
Indians; Miller, then young, was tall, slenderly built, as
active as a cat, and as fleet as hind, and as brave as Julius
Caesar. This company coming upon the Indians, suddenly, a
desperate fight ensued. Vertrees was killed at the first fire.
A stout warrior seized a white man, wrestled his gun from him
and was about to cleve his head with an axe. Miller at that
moment, with a celerity of action which few men could equal,
and with a power that few possessed ..... snatched the white
man from the Indian as he would a chicken from a hawk, and,
with an equal rapid motion, killed the Indian. This turned the
tide, and the remaining Indians fled, leaving several dead on
the ground."In 1793 William McCIung was sworn and admitted to

69. [PIONEER KENTUCKY] Duff Green (1791-1875) was an American teacher, military leader, politician, journalist, author, diplomat, industrialist and businessman. Born in Woodford County, Kentucky, he was a school teacher in his native state of Kentucky. He served under General William Harrison and the Kentucky militia in the War of 1812 and led the Missouri Brigade in the Indian Campaign, earning the rank brigadier general. Thereafter he was known by many as General Duff Green. He then settled in Missouri, where he worked as a schoolmaster and practiced law. He was a member of the Missouri Constitutional Convention of 1820, and was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1820 and to the state Senate in 1822, serving one term in each house. Becoming interested in journalism, he purchased and for two years edited the St Louis Enquirer. In 1826, in Washington, D.C., he bought and later edited, The United States Telegraph, which became the principal organ of Andrew Jackson's backers, helping him defeat John Quincy Adams in the presidential election of 1828. Upon Jackson's election to the presidency, the Telegraph became the principal mouthpiece of the administration, receiving printing patronage estimated at $50,000 a year. Green became one of the unofficial advisers of Jackson known as the Kitchen Cabinet on which Jackson depended heavily following the Petticoat affair. In the quarrel between Jackson and his vice president John C. Calhoun, who had also been Adams' vice president, Green supported Calhoun, and through the Telegraph, violently attacked the Jackson administration. In consequence, the Jackson administration revoked its patronage for the Telegraph in the spring of 1831. Under the date of December 24, 1833, Adams records in his diary that James Blair "had knocked down and very severely beaten Duff Green, editor of the Telegraph..." Blair paid "three hundred dollars fine for beating and breaking the bones" of Green. Green, however, continued to edit The United States Telegraph in the Calhoun interest until 1835, and gave vigorous support to that Calhoun's nullification views. Duff's daughter Margaret Maria was the mother of Calhoun's grandson, also named John Caldwell Calhoun. In his second term, Jackson replaced Calhoun with Martin Van Buren as his vice president. From 1835 to 1838 Duff edited The Reformation, a radically partisan publication, devoted to free trade, states' rights, and the idea of "Manifest Destiny". In 1840 Green established the Pilot in Baltimore to support the Harrison-Tyler ticket. Although initially endorsed by the Whig party, Green's controversial editorials regarding Catholic influence in American politics alienated his readers. Subscriptions declined, and publication suspended in 1841. In 1841-1843 he was in Europe on behalf of the Tyler administration, and he is said to have been instrumental in causing the appointment of Lord Ashburton to negotiate in Washington concerning the boundary dispute between Maine and Canada. In January 1843 Green established in New York City a short-lived journal, The Republic, to combat the spoils system and to advocate free trade. In September 1844 Calhoun, then secretary of state, sent Green to Texas ostensibly as consul at Galveston, but actually, it appears, to report to the administration, then considering the question of the annexation of Texas, concerning the political situation in Texas and Mexico. After the close of the war with Mexico, Green was sent to that country in 1849 by President Taylor to negotiate concerning the moneys which, by the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the United States had agreed to pay; and he saved his country a considerable sum by arranging for payment in exchange instead of in specie. Subsequently Green was engaged in railway building in Georgia and Alabama. He was also one of the founding associates in the incorporation of the New Mexican Railway Company. Duff was attracted to Dalton, Georgia in 1851 by the construction of the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad from Knoxville, Tennessee to connect with the Western and Atlantic Railroad. He profited by making strategic land purchases. As his wealth grew, he donated land for many public projects in Dalton. During the Civil War Green organized three iron manufacturing plants for production of iron, nails, horseshoes, and rails in support of the Confederacy. He and his son Ben also established the Dalton Arms Company in 1862. After the war he was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson for his support of the Confederacy and paid a $20,000 fine. Duff Green was one of the founding members of the Pennsylvania Fiscal Agency, incorporated Nov 1, 1859 in Pennsylvania. At that time he gained 42,000 shares but paid with a bad check the 5% payment on only 5,000 shares. On March 26, 1864 Thomas C. Durant, vice president of the Union Pacific Railroad Company purchased the corporation as a front construction company, whereby the directors and principal stock holders of the Union Pacific retained all construction profits. They then used these funds to purchase Union Pacific stock at par value and resell it on the open market for even greater profits. Durant changed the company name to the Crédit Mobilier of America. The scandal involving the sale of discounted Credit Mobilier stock to Congressional members voting for payment of exorbitant transcontinental railroad construction costs took place during the Johnson administration but was uncovered during the Grant administration. Green died in Dalton, a city that he had helped to build. Offered here is a signed document from his early years in Elizabethtown, Ky, dated 1813, approx. 7-3/4 x 5 in. His signature appears first line at top. VG. The picture of Duff Green is not included here...........100-150
See Green portrait70. [ART] Mary Harriman Rumsey [1881-1934] founder of The Junior League for the Promotion of Settlement Movements, later known as the Junior League of the City of New York of the Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. Mary was the daughter of railroad magnate, E.H. Harriman and sister to W. Averell Harriman, former New York State Governor and United States Diplomat. TLS, 1922, 2pp, to the artist Walt Kuhn. She begins with "At the eleventh hour, in going over my finances, I find that I am "more broke" than I thought I was, and will be so until the first of October. I could, possibly, spare $2000.00, if the worst came to worst, between now and then..." It is unclear as to what show she is referring to. The handwriting on the original envelope is that of Walt Kuhn [stamp not present]. Mary was a most interesting person. She was the oldest of six children to railroad industrialist, E.H. Harriman and his wife Mary Averell Harriman. Mary attended Barnard College where she specialized in Sociology. In 1933, then President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Mary to chair the Consumer Advisory Board (CAB) of the National Recovery Administration (NRA), the first government consumer rights group. Despite her inexperience, Mary's work with farming cooperatives and belief in the power of cooperation would come to be her greatest assets. Mary would promote the formation of consumer groups across the nation and encouraged these groups to report their grievances to her office. Mary Rumsey's work as chair of the CAB was short-lived as she died on December 18, 1934 from injuries sustained a month earlier in a horseback riding accident. Mary Rumsey's legacy to New Deal reforms would be continued by her younger brother, W. Averell Harriman. Averell was encouraged by his older sister to leave his finance job and join her and their friends, the Roosevelts, to advance the goals of the New Deal. Averell joined the NRA, marking the beginning of his political career. In 1918, Mary joined the board of the Maternity Center Association, which had appointed Frances Perkins as its unpaid executive secretary, thus deepening a friendship and professional partnership that would last until Mary's death. Despite her enthusiasm and support for her housemate's [Frances Perkins] important work, Mary had no intention of being a "cabinet wife." She intended to make her own impact. During the administration's first year in office, she founded Today magazine, a Washington weekly which later acquired News Week to become the publication we know today as Newsweek. None other than FDR himself was the magazine's first subscriber. A typical party given by Mary might include Will Rogers, Eleanor Roosevelt, Margaret Bourke White, and General Douglas MacArthur at the same table with an unknown Appalachian folk singer. Rare! written and signed by Ben Helm, Hardin County [Elizabethtown]
Kentucky. Legal matter concerning: WilliamBush, the brother of
Sarah, Abraham Lincoln's step-mother. Approx. 6-1/2 x 5-1/8".
Signed on the verso by Robert Bleakley.Robert Bleakley, opened a
store in Elizabethtown with William Montgomery, another
Irishman. Their establishment is said to have been the first
such operation in the pioneer village that could ready be called
a "store." Montgomery was an Orangeman, who was engaged in the
rebellion In Ireland in 1798. He was arrested and confined in a
prison from which men were taken and executed daily He was
released from prison through the efforts of his aunt, who was
married to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland on the condition that
he would emigrate to America. Wm. Montgomery and Bleakley opened
adry goods store. In 1806 they hired the father of Abraham
Lincoln [Thomas] to take a flatboat down the Mississippi river
with their merchandise to be sold in New Orleans. They paid Tom
Lincoln 16 pounds gold and a credit of 13 pounds in gold. Their
store account books show Tom Lincoln buying "two twists of
tobacco & one pint of whisky." And thebooks also show that
in May 1806, Thomas went on a buying spree, purchasing silk,
linen, scarlet cloth, dozens of buttons, etc. Earlier that year
he had purchased an aristocratic beaver hat & a pair of silk
suspenders for $1.50. He was, at this time, courting his future
bride Nancy Hanks [Abe Lincoln's mother]. After the wedding he
made his home in a cabin close to the courthouse in
Elizabethtown. He then purchased at their store, knives, forks,
spoons, thread, needles, silk & tobacco. Carl Sandburg wrote
about Bleakley and Lincoln.BEN HELM (b. Fairfax county, Va., May

of major in the war of 1812; filled various other offices of
honor and trust in Kentucky: purchased the farm owned by

step-mother of Abraham Lincoln, and was a partner in a general
store with Duff Green [later, American statesman], conducting
the business as Green & Helm. He died in Elizabethtown,
1858, nearly 91 years old.Apparently William Bush was somewhat
of a troublemaker in the E-town area. He was born in 1763, and
in 1828 he acquired the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had
lived, before they left for Indiana. His sister, Sarah, became
the step-mother of the future U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln.

success. He served on jury duty with Thomas Lincoln, after of
Abraham and acquired the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had
lived, before they left for Indiana∞, and later Illinois.
Although prosperous, he was frequently entangled in lawsuits.
His reputation was guarded and he did not enjoy the respect og
other members of the Bush family. Little is known of Lincoln’s
relationship with the Bush family. Lincoln claimed that his
family’s “removal (to Indiana) was partly on account of slavery,
but chiefly on account of the difficulty in land titles in
Kentucky.” Thomas Lincoln was known to be anti-slavery, and as a
young boy Abraham probably observed slaves being taken in chains
to Southern markets, on the road beside his home. Carl Sandburg
and other historians have not dwlt on the cantankerous nature of
the President’s uncle by marriage,8 let alone the fact that
there was a slave-trader in the family. We wish to give credit
to Blaine Houmes for much of what appears in this description.

contemporaries but he was a master at chromatic harmony and had
a strong sense for the dramatic. His compositions include
operas, ballets, orchestral and piano music and songs. His best

ambitious in scale. Two of his operas, Le Hulla (1920) and
Kerkeb (1931), are based in the Orient; with the latter's title
role a Barber dancer in a harem. His opera Tarass Boulba (1919),

118. [MIXED LOT] multiple items offered here: [1] [ENGLAND] The Rev Dr John Pye-Smith FRS, FGS (1774-1851) was a Congregational theologian and tutor, associated with reconciling geological sciences with the Bible, Repeal of the Corn Laws and abolition. Mounted to larger sheet identifying the handwriting in 1840 and "Presented by Jas. W. Alexander." Dr John Pye-Smith was Theological Tutor at Homerton College near Hackney, London for forty-five years between 1805 and 1850, and minister of the Old Gravel Pit Chapel in Chatham Place, Hackney for nearly as long (1811-50). His pupils included Robert Halley (future Principal of New College, London), Samuel Dyer the missionary, and William Johnson Fox of the South Place Ethical Society. The son of a Sheffield bookseller, he was surrounded by books in his youth and, practically self-taught, rose not only to become a dissenting academic and author, but through his interest in science and geology, was elected to become the first Fellow of the Royal Society from a nonconformist background. He was also elected a Fellow of the Geological Society at a time when there was considerable debate about accepting the idea of geological time, and if so to find ways of reconciling this with the teachings of the Old Testament. During the politically turbulent 1790s, before moving to London he had taken over the editorship of the Sheffield Iris, the leading abolitionist newspaper in the North of England, during imprisonment of its editor, his friend James Montgomery. In 1830 Dr Pye Smith took the Chair of The Board of Congregational Ministers when it passed an anti-slavery motion to secure support from all Congregational chapels across the country in petitioning parliament:That we feel it to be a solemn duty to employ our influence with our congregations and the public, to promote petitions to both Houses of Parliament for the abolition of Colonial Slavery, and therefore pledge ourselves, and beg to recommend to our brethren throughout the kingdom to prepare from each congregation such petitions to parliament... The Congregationalists' 1833 abolition lecture, The Sinfulness of Colonial Slavery, was delivered at John Pye-Smith's Meeting House in Hackney by his former pupil, Robert Halley Dr John Pye Smith died in Hackney in 1851 and is buried below a marble chest tomb monument in Dr Watts' Walk, at the Congregationalists' non-denominational garden cemetery in the grounds of Abney Park, Stoke Newington.. landscape and marine painter and a major figure of the Rockport
(MA) School of American regional art. He was a contemporary of
important Rockport artists Aldro Hibbard, Emil Gruppe, W. Lester
Stevens, Antonio Cirino, and Marguerite Pierson. Born in
Rotterdam on 20 February 1888, Thieme studied at the Academie of
Fine Arts in Rotterdam for two years and then, briefly, at the
Royal Academy, the Hague. He traveled widely in Europe,

ended, he traveled to South America, primarily Brazil and
Argentina. Stage work again provided his livelihood. A return to
Europe followed with further work in England, France, and Italy.
Returning to the United States with a contract for additional
stage work, Thieme found himself in Boston. He discontinued work
on the stage in 1928 and from then on made his living with the
sales of his paintings and etchings. Thieme married Lillian
Beckett in 1929 and moved to Rockport, MA. He established the
Thieme School of Art. He exhibited his work frequently at the
Grand Central Art Galleries in New York. He continued to travel
widely; Mexico, Guatemala, Florida, and France were major
destinations, always painting en plein air. Thieme committed
suicide on 6 December 1954 in Greenwich, CT. The circumstances
of his death are not fully understood. Anthony Thieme was a full
member of the American Watercolor Society, Art Alliance of
America, the Salmagundi Club, the Boston Art Club, North Shore

[GREAT EASTERN] John Scott Russell 1808-1882) Scottish naval engineer who built the Great Eastern in collaboration with Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and made the discovery that gave birth to the modern study of solitons. Russell's experiments and observations led him to propose a new system of shaping vessels, known as the wave system, which was to culminate in the building of the SS Great Eastern. He was held in high regard by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who made him a partner in his project to build the Great Eastern. At its time, this was to be the largest moveable object man had ever created. The Great Eastern was eventually launched in 1858, having been designed according to Russell's wave system. 134. [VERMONT] Benj. Swan (1762-1839) an
interesting Vermont person. Known as Major Ben Swan, was
born in Worcester, Mass. At Worcester and in Boston,
Benjamin received a most thorough mercantile education in
the house of Messrs. Samuel & Stephen Salisbury, a firm
whose standing and credit for a series of years gave them
the highest reputation in the commercial community, both in
Europe and America. Mr. Swan was for some time in a
mercantile house in Montreal, where he became quite
thoroughly versed in the French language, then more
generally spoken in Canada. In 1791 he began business in
Woodstock, Vermont, in connection with the Chandlers. In the
general theory and the various details of the business of a
merchant he was probably the best-educated man in Vermont.
His unvarying rectitude in all his affairs won for him the
confidence of every one, while his cheerful manners and the
good-humor with which he enlivened his various business
transactions made him a favorite with all classes of the
community. After Mr. Swan retired from mercantile pursuits,
he sustained a variety of offices and trusts. For many years
he was the principal officiating magistrate in Woodstock,
and in the numerous trials of cases which came before him
the parties rarely, if ever, resorted to a jury. He was the
first postmaster in this town [Woodstock]. In 1796, on the
resignation of General Morris of the office of county clerk,
Mr. Swan was appointed to that place, and from that time to
his death, a period of forty-three years, retained the
position of clerk of the Supreme and County Courts. In the
year 1800 he was appointed by the legislature treasurer of
the State, and thenceforward, for thirty-two years, the
freemen of Vermont honored themselves and reflected honor
upon him by electing him annually to that office, and
generally without opposition. For a large portion of the
time during which he served as treasurer, while banks were still scarce, and poor at
that, he acted as a kind of general banker, to whom all
classes of people resorted who were wishing to borrow,
for an emergency, a moderate sum of money. The following
is an instance among many that might be mentioned. When
Zadock Thompson was ready to have his first Gazetteer
printed, he needed money to run the paper. This was to be
made at Wells River. His father said he would go to Benjamin
Swan and see if he could raise the money from him. When he
mentioned the matter to Major Swan, and asked if he could do
the favor, the major answered, " Yes, yes, hum-m-m," and sat
down and wrote to the paper-maker thus: "Mr. Thompson
wishes to buy fifty dollars' worth of paper for his
Gazetteer, for which he shall be good. "Benjamin Swan." Many
of the loans, however, which Mr. Swan made in his function
of general banker, proved detrimental to bis pocket, if not
to his peace of mind. After his death there was found on the
upper shelf of the bookcase in his office a long row of
files of notes, embracing many thousand dollars in value,
all outlawed, or otherwise wholly worthless, &emdash;
notes taken for sums of money lent to people in needy
circumstances living in the neighborhood, to young men going
West, and to various classes of people who called on this
patient and forbearing man for help out of some difficulty.
From this fact it would appear that the words of Scripture,
"from him that would borrow of thee, turn not thou away,"
Mr. Swan regarded more in the light of a rule to live by
than as merely a piece of fine sentiment. No man was ever
more highly esteemed by the people of this State of Vermont
than Major Benjamin Swan, and no man was ever more deserving
of such esteem. Yet, notwithstanding the regard in which he
was held, and the universal deference paid to him, in his
deportment and in his heart he was a man of great modesty
and humility. This was in keeping with the kind and
benevolent spirit he exercised towards all classes of people
with whom he came in contact, whether in business affairs or
in the private walks of life. Offered here is
a State of Vermont, legal writ, 1811, signed twice on the
front and once on the verso. Approx. 7-3/4 x 12-3/4". VG............50-75

damage as possible to the vital Western and Atlantic Railroad
(W&A) line from Atlanta to Chattanooga as they went. They
were pursued by Confederate forces at first on foot, and later
on a succession of locomotives. Because the Union men had
cut the telegraph wires, the Confederates could not send
warnings ahead to forces along the railway. Confederates
eventually captured the raiders and executed some quickly as
spies, including Andrews; some others were able to flee. Some of
the raiders were the first to be awarded the Medal of Honor by
the US Congress for their actions. As a civilian, Andrews was
not eligible. Offered here: USA TAX RECEIPT USED

John and Ethel
Ross, became Patty Duke's managers. The Rosses
recognized her talent and promoted her as a child actress.
Soon after The Miracle Worker became so successful, John and
Ethel Ross spoke to Anna’s [later know as Patty] mother
telling her that they felt they needed complete control of her
daughter. They needed to make sure her life was acting and
little else, and the only way they could continue to teach her
the skills she would need as an actress was if Anna moved in
with them full time. Frances, having little financial and
emotional security of her own, agreed to let her youngest
daughter live with the Ross’s. Anna took this personally and
for the next several years she resented her mother for giving
her up to the Ross’s while all she wanted to do was stay at
home with her favorite person in the world: the woman who gave
birth to her. Anna’s name had already been
professionally changed to “Patty Duke” by the Ross’s, in a
manner that would keep Anna occupied on her psychiatrist’s
couch for many years to come. “Anna Marie is dead”
Ethel once said to her. “You’re Patty now.” As Patty’s success
continued, the Ross’s behavior would become more and more
distorted and dysfunctional. Condition is very good.

167. [FILM] Layte Bowden -
Pan-American Airlines stewardess who kept company with Peter
Lawford for the two years he and his ex-wife, Pat Kennedy, lived
at opposite ends of the country. She was a former beauty queen,
a one-time receptionist and secretary to then-Sen. George
Smathers (D-Fla.) who graced Roll Call’s pages in 1960 as part
of a double header baseball-themed shot, went on to join the jet
set — literally. After leaving the Hill in 1962, she, whom
Life Magazine once featured in an article about “pretty girls”
in Washington, joined the ranks of the Pucci-clad Pan Am
stewardesses. “We were treated like movie stars on Pan Am,” she
said. In her role at the airline, she also flew on White House
press charters as chief purser, accompanying Presidents John
Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon on official
trips. She was with JFK in Berlin when he gave his famous
“Ich bein ein Berliner” speech and in Dallas the day he was
shot. “I was on Air Force One when the word came in” that he had
died, she said. “I fainted in the aisle and somebody got brandy
and poured it down me.” Before she traded in her swinging-single
gal status to marry Butler Aviation CEO Paul Dopp in 1971, the
Floridian said she also dated a dizzying array of Congressmen,
movie stars, and other high-ranking officials, including
then-Rep. John Brademas (D-Ind.), Warren Beatty and Kennedy
brother-in-law and Rat Packer Peter Lawford. She had a small
role in the Lawford-produced film “Billie,” starring Patty Duke.
In the mid-1960s, Dopp and CBS News Anchor Dan Rather began
collaboration on a book based on their experiences traveling
with presidents but never completed it because she “was so busy
having a good time.” Rare ALS, 1966, 1p, to Milt

169. [LINCOLN] LEONARD W. VOLK (1828-1895) American sculptor. Most famous for making a life mask of American President Abraham Lincoln. In 1857, he settled in Chicago, where he helped to establish the Academy of Design and was for eight years its head. In 1860 he made a life mask of Lincoln, of whom only one other was ever made (by Clark Mills in 1865). In the early part of spring in 1860, during Abraham Lincoln's visit to Chicago, Volk asked him to sit for a bust. When Lincoln agreed, the artist decided to start by doing a life mask. Lincoln found the process of letting wet plaster dry on his face, followed by a skin-stretching removal process, "anything but agreeable." But he endured it with good humor, and when he saw the final bust, he was quite pleased, declaring it "the animal himself." Volk later used the life mask and bust of 1860 as the basis for other editions, including a full-length statue of Lincoln. Signed 1893 bank check. VG.................100-200

178. [ART] Filippo Morghen (Florence, 1730 - Naples, 1777) accomplished eighteenth century engraver. He studied art in Rome for a period of seven years before settling in Naples where he created etchings and engravings. Filippo Morghen was a leading engraver for the recent archaeological discoveries detailed in the Antiquities of Herculaneum, published in Naples in 1757, and the sole engraver and publisher of Views of Ruins in the Environs of Naples, published in 1766. In fact, reference is made to the discoveries at Herculaneum (then a Spanish possession) in the lower right corner of this portrait engraving of Charles III, King of Spain, where we see ancient pottery and sculpture as well as archeological tools-of-the-trade, such as a shovel and a pick. Filippo Morghen's fine engravings earned him the title of 'Engraver to the King of the Two Sicilies'. He was also the father and teacher of Rafaello Morghen (1758-1833), one of the most influential engravers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Carlos III Hispania Atque Indiarum Rex is based upon a design created by the eighteenth century Italian artist, Camillus Paderni (Naples, c. 1720 - 1770). Original Engraving, portrait of Carlos III Hispania Atque Indiarum Rex (Charles III, King of Spain), image approx. 17 X 12" plus margins. Printed on mid eighteenth century hand-made, laid paper. It is a fine, early impression in excellent condition throughout and an outstanding example of the 18th century portrait engraving. This original engraving stands as a prime example of the famous art of Filippo Morghen. VG............250-350

181. [ART] Christian Haldenwang (German, 1770-1831) one of the finest German landscape engravers of the early 19th Century. His main works includes the cycle of the "Four Seasons" after Claude Lorrains paintings in the collection of the Ermitage Leningrad. He born at Durlach in 1770, was articled to Christian von Mechel, an engraver and dealer in art goods at Basle. He lived five years in this establishment, destitute of every means that could promote his education as an artist; for it was rather a factory than a school of art. The examples set before him were only French engravings. He, however, was able to see some of Middiman's ' Select Views in Great Britain,' and others by Woollett, which were probably presents from those artists to Mechel. Seeing these prints excited Haldenwang creating a desire to imitate them, and he determined to make Woollett his model. During the latter part of his time he made some attempts at aquatint, which, though injurious to his health, had beneficial results; for some well-executed works of this class obtained the notice of the Chalcographic Society, and he went to Dessau in 1796, where he remained for eight years, producing many beautiful landscapes, and improving his skill in that style of engraving. The reputation he acquired induced the Margrave Charles Frederick of Baden to appoint him engraver to the court of Carlsruhe, but during the time the French had the ascendancy in Germany, he was obliged to work for the booksellers. It was then that he executed the views in the ' Rhenish Pocket-book,' and the two masterly engravings for the ' Travels in Brazil ' of Prince Maximilian of Neuwied. He also executed four landscapes, after Claude and Ruisdael, for the ' Musee Napo- leon.' He died at Bad Rippoldsau in 1831. Original engraving by Haldenwang, title: "Paysage", image size approx. 11-1/4 x 14-1/2" plus wide clean margins. Circa 1820-1828. Remarkable detail...........100-150

236. Ivy Litvinov [1889-1977] English writer, wife of Soviet Foreign Affairs minister. Ivy Lowe, born in London in 1889 of the unlikely union of a Jewish intellectual and the daughter of an Indian army colonel, grew up to be a writer and a rebel. The man she met in 1914 and married two years later was the Bolshevik revolutionary, Maksim Litvinov (born Meyer Genokh Wallakh to Orthodox Jewish parents). He became one of the most important figures in the Soviet Union and was ultimately Stalin's Minister of Foreign Affairs and ambassador to Washington. Ivy spent most of her long life in Moscow. She never took to being the Commissar's wife, but devoted herself to literature. Her writing is almost without exception a heightened autobiography, the collection of short stories depicting her daily life and observations. The fact that she survived under Stalin is remarkable, although there was an unexplained year when she was virtually in exile in the Urals, separated from her husband and two children. The happiest time of her life was when Maxim was the ambassador to the United States, and she and America fell in love with one another. Her dynamic, bohemian personality entranced Americans and she was fêted by artists, film stars, writers and statesmen alike. It is perhaps appropriate that many of her stories were first published in the New Yorker. They were collected in 1971 under the title She Knew She Was Right. "She also translated into English her husband's speeches and party tracts and later such Russian classics as Pushkin, Turgenev, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, and Chekhov." "Her final years were spent adding to a disorderly pile of unpublished manuscripts, but never producing the volume of memoirs about high life in the Kremlin that was expected of her. In fact, she always remained something of an outsider, and her fifty-year sojourn in the Soviet Union owed more to personal loyalty to her husband, and later her children, than to sympathy with Communist ideology." ANS written on postcard, postmarked May 9, 1960, saying she has just become a great grandmother. "Please you don't have to congratulate me!" film producer and screenwriter. He is best known for producing
Wings, for which he received the first Academy Award
for Best Picture. Lucien produced and or wrote ninety-two
films over the course of his career. He lived in the same
house in Beverly Hills until the day he died; he was an avid
polo player and would frequently ride out of the stables
located, in those days, at the rear of his Hillcrest Road
property, to Will Rogers' house in the Palisades; he also
occasionally rode his horse to Paramount Studios where he had
been elevated to president shortly after the Academy Award
winning Wings which he produced, was released. This film
helped director William A. Wellman's rise into major studio
films. Before coming to Los Angeles, he was night editor
of The New York Times. He had written five screenplays on the
side and decided one day to travel to Hollywood to see if he
could sell any of them; he sold three and in 1923, his career
was launched. A film he loved was entitled The Vanishing
American and it was the first film to portray the
Indian in a favorable light; he received an award from the
Cherokee nation for this film. He discovered and mentored many

See Trevor Howard247. [ART] Peggy Bacon, one of America's most famous women artists. An ORIGINAL painting by the famous American artist, Peggy Bacon. Done in mixed media, she used ink and what appears to be a combination of watercolor and thinned oil paint. She has signed and dated this work 1971, and titled it THE BABES IN THE WOODS. The mat opening is 14 x 22.5 in. Executed on paper and in fine condition. Prints by Peggy Bacon are fairly common in the market, although expensive, and her paintings are quite scarce as the small number of auction records would indicate. This is a superb example of Bacon's work and should be considered important. Obviously its dark because the bear cubs are in the woods. This is guaranteed authentic and to have been painted and signed by Peggy Bacon, and we will send along a letter stating this. PEGGY BACON [1895-1987] A printmaker, illustrator, and author of children's books, Peggy Bacon later turned exclusively to fine art painting in watercolor, pastel, and oil. Her 1934 book of caricatures, "Off With Their Heads," established her as a leading satirist. Much of her work is satirical and lighthearted and frequently a commentary on the New York art world. She also chose many ordinary events in the lives of city people, giving these pieces a wry twist. She was born in Ridgefield, Connecticut to artist parents and studied at the Art Student's League. There in her drypoints, first completed in 1919, she was especially influenced by the realistic prints of John Sloan and George Bellows, but her style, with flattened forms and hardened contours, was more modern and abstract. In 1920, she married artist Alexander Brook, and during the next decade they were prominent figures in the Woodstock art colony. During the 1920s, she had two one-woman shows in New York and also illustrated and wrote numerous children's books. A satirical work on thirty-nine well known fellow artists, written in 1934 and called "Off With Their Heads," was funded by the Guggenheim Foundation. The book was greatly successful and stirred a demand for her caricatures, but she shied away from those subjects because they were hurtful to the subjects. In the late 1920s, she had began to explore lithographs, etchings, and pastel, but drypoint remained her favorite medium until the 1950s when she concentrated on oil painting. She was financially successful, selling her work well in New York, and she and her husband were part of the group of artists promoted by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. In 1940, she and her husband were divorced, and she continued to paint and also wrote novels. Her 1953 mystery, "The Inward Eye," earned the Edgar Allen Poe Mystery Award for best novel of the year. She lived to age ninety-two, spending the later years of her life at Cape Porpoise, Maine..............5000-7000

356. Winfield
Scott (1786-1866) American general, and
unsuccessful presidential candidate of the Whig Party in 1852.
Known as "Old Fuss and Feathers" and the "Grand Old Man of the
Army," he served on active duty as a general longer than any
other man in American history , and many historians rate him the
best American commander of his time. Over the course of his
forty-seven-year career, he commanded forces in the War of 1812,
the Mexican-American War, the Black Hawk War, the Second
Seminole War, and, briefly, the American Civil War, conceiving
the Union strategy known as the Anaconda Plan that would be used
to defeat the Confederacy. He served as Commanding General of
the United States Army for twenty years, longer than any other
holder of the office. A national hero after the Mexican-American
War, he served as military governor of Mexico City. Such was his
stature that, in 1852, the United States Whig Party passed over
its own incumbent President of the United States, Millard
Fillmore, to nominate Scott in that year's United States
presidential election. At a height of 6'5", he remains the
tallest man ever nominated by a major party. Scott lost to
Democrat Franklin Pierce in the general election, but remained a
popular national figure, receiving a brevet promotion in 1856 to
the rank of lieutenant general, becoming the first American
since George Washington to hold that rank. CLIP SIGNATURE.....100-150

365. [FILM] Samuel
A. Taylor (1912-2000) American
playwright and screenwriter. Taylor made his Broadway debut as
author of the play The Happy Time in 1950. He wrote the play
Sabrina Fair (1953) and co-wrote its film adaptation released
the following year. In 1955, he won a Golden Globe and was
nominated for an Academy Award for the screenplay. His early
success brought him more work in Hollywood, including the
biographical film The Eddy Duchin Story (1956) and the Alfred
Hitchcock classic Vertigo (1958). His film career faded
after the initial box office failure of Vertigo, though
Hitchcock and Taylor remained frequent collaborators. He was
often contracted to write drafts for Hitchcock's later films,
such as Torn Curtain (1966), though Taylor's only other
Hitchcock screenplay (apart from Vertigo) was for Topaz
(1969). Taylor died of heart failure in Blue Hill, Maine.
His credits are sometimes confused with those of novelist and
screenwriter Samuel W. Taylor. Brief ANS sent to rev.
