1. GERMAN WORLD WAR II ARCHIVE - An interesting German archive of 15 documents pertaining to the attempts by one Mrs. Terhaggen to have her enlisted son return home to the family's weaving factory that supplies clothes for German troops, of which the son had become the boss following the father's death on Oct. 10, 1944. She writes on Nov. 14, 1944, on letterhead of the family's factory, "Carl Hesper Nacht", to Obergruppenführer Albert Bormann requesting that her son, a naval officer, be returned home. She states that hers is the last weaving shop open and without her son there to run it, it will undoubtedly have to close. She asks Bormann to rush the request. This appeal must have been forwarded to a senior Kriegsmarine officer who subsequently writes to Admiral KARL-JESCO VON PUTTKAMMER on Dec. 1, 1944. The unidentified officer writes : "...The comments submitted in the petition of the wife Terheggen I first ordered to rush the 15.1.45...The request I give you, Admiral, return with a copy of the reply to Mrs. Terheggen...". Docketed and signed in pencil at bottom by Puttkammer, also Bormann's ink signature is near top of the letter.. Puttkammer (1900-1981) was naval adjutant to Hitler; present at the 20 July Plot, he was injured and awarded the Wounded Badge. He was sent to Berghof to destroy Hitler's papers but was not present during his final days. Additional documents include: an official letter from the Führer's office regarding an elderly woman trying to donate funds "for the reconstruction of Berlin", which are not accepted; another document regarding a court case involving: "...continued infidelity and continued corruption..." of one Richard Mahler, a leader of public health in Berlin. As a result of this, Mahler was removed from his post by Goebbels and given four years in prison; another document discusses cases of fruit sent to Hitler (which made him "very happy"); another concerning empty boxes that need to be returned to a plant as soon as railway barriers are lifted; and questionnaires, etc. In lightly worn condition, overall very good and worthy of proper translation.  Includes another Bormann signed memo, and possibly others that are initialed.

NOTE: Albert Bormann (1902-1989) served as an adjutant to Adolf Hitler, and was the younger brother of Martin Bormann.  Hitler was fond of Bormann and found him to be trustworthy. In 1938, Bormann was assigned to a small group of adjutants who were not subordinate to Martin Bormann.  The relationship between Martin and Albert became so caustic that Martin referred to him not even by name but as "the man who holds the Führer's coat".  Further in 1938, Bormann became Chief of Main office I: Persönliche Angelegenheiten des Führers (Personal Affairs of the Führer) of the Kanzlei des Führers. In that job, Bormann handled much of Hitler's routine correspondence.  He became private secretary for Hitler.

Karl-Jesco Otto Robert von Puttkamer (1900-1981)  German rear admiral who was naval adjutant to Nazi Germany's leader Adolf Hitler during World War II.  Puttkamer was injured on 20 July 1944 when the bomb exploded during the July 20 Plot attempt to kill Hitler and was awarded the Wound Badge (20 July 1944).  On 20 April 1945, Hitler told his staff, "the situation during the last few days has changed to such an extent that I am forced to reduce my staff". Puttkamer was ordered by Hitler to leave the Berlin Führerbunker. On 23 April, Puttkamer and several others were flown by aircraft to the Obersalzberg. Puttkamer was ordered to the Berghof to destroy Hitler's papers there. Therefore, Puttkamer was not with Hitler during his final few days in the Führerbunker. Following the German surrender on 8 May 1945, Puttkamer was held in captivity until May 1947. He died aged 80 in Munich.      Estimate $ 500-750

2. [DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE]  William Hooper  (1742-1790) Signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was born in Boston Massachusetts in 1742. He graduated from Harvard College in 1760, continued his studies in the law, and settled in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1767. In 1773 he represented Wilmington in the General Assembly of North Carolina. He attended the Continental Congress in 1774. He resigned from the Congress in 1776 and returned home. In 1789 he was appointed to the Federal Bench, but a year later he retired due to failing health.  Hooper's  Loyalist father was displeased and disowned his patriotic son. Hooper went on to study law under James Otis, a published political radical. Hooper eventually married Anne Clarke, the daughter of an early settler to the area. They had three children: a daughter and two sons. The family remained in the Wilmington area, because Hooper had established a professional network, developed a wealthy clientele, and served as a circuit judge.  The increasingly popular Hooper was appointed Deputy Attorney for the Salisbury district in 1769 and later Deputy Attorney General for North Carolina in 1770.   Due to matters in dealing with this new government in North Carolina, Hooper missed the vote approving the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July, 1776; however, he arrived in time to sign it on August 2, 1776. In 1777, due to continued financial concerns, Hooper resigned from Congress, and returned to North Carolina to resume his law career. Throughout the Revolution the British attempted to capture Hooper.  Offered here is a   1 page. partly-printed Document Signed, 8" x 6 1/2  in., dated September 24, 1778, a State of North Carolina, Salisbury District, sheriff's writ, wherein the sheriff of Anson County is commanded to take from the Goods and Chattels, Lands and Tenements of James Farr a sum of five pounds two shillings & one penny involving his suit vs. John Steen, signed H. 6. [CIVIL WAR]  The Great Locomotive Chase or Andrews' Raid was a military raid that occurred April 12, 1862, in northern Georgia during the American Civil War. Volunteers from the Union Army, led by civilian scout James J. Andrews, commandeered a train and took it northward toward Chattanooga, Tennessee, doing as much damage as possible to the vital Western and Atlantic Railroad (W&A) line from Atlanta to Chattanooga as they went. They were pursued by Confederate forces at first on foot, and later on a succession of locomotives.  Because the Union men had cut the telegraph wires, the Confederates could not send warnings ahead to forces along the railway. Confederates eventually captured the raiders and executed some quickly as spies, including Andrews; some others were able to flee. Some of the raiders were the first to be awarded the Medal of Honor by the US Congress for their actions. As a civilian, Andrews was not eligible.  Offered here:  USA TAX RECEIPT USED ISSUED  IN MAY  1862 THE YEAR OF "THE GREAT LOCOMOTIVE CHASE".  SIGNED BY BEN MAY,  CONFEDERATE OFFICIAL; TREASURER OF THE WESTERN AND ATLANTIC RAILROAD AT THE TIME OF THE "GREAT LOCOMOTIVE CHASE." 7.  [SHOW BIZ] An interesting lot concerning Patty Duke.  Includes: 1] A brief TLS signed "Bill" [Wm. Peyton Marin], dated 1965, to Milton Ebbins.  Sending a contact to be signed. Marin was Joseph P. Kennedy's principal legal counsel, was acknowledged to be one of his closest advisers.  2] The actual agreement bewteen CHRISLAW PRODUCTIONS and PATTY DUKE ENTERPRISES CORP., covering the production of "TIME OUT FOR GINGER".   This agreement is signed by Milton Ebbins and John Ross. Milton Ebbins (1912–2008) Film executive, songwriter ("Yale Blues", "Basic Boogie") and composer. Ebbins helped produce JFK’s 1961 Inaugural Ball and the subsequent 1962 JFK Anniversary Gala. In May of 1962, Ebbins escorted a very late Marilyn Monroe to Madison Square Garden where she famously — and breathlessly — sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President.” He was also the man that Lawford called after speaking to Monroe the night of her death in August of 1962. Ebbins was one of the few allowed inside the White House after the JFK assassination. As the link between Washington and Hollywood, Ebbins helped Kennedy family patriarch and former ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy navigate through the movie business, not only keeping him apprised of his son-in-law’s career moves but at one point advising him against purchasing United Artists’ movie studio. At the time of his death, Ebbins was working with his friend, actor Bill Paxton, on an HBO project about the Kennedy assassination.

Ebbins music career began in 1936, he formed his own orchestra, then became music director at CBS, and went to New York in 1938, joining an advertising agency's radio department. He also had been a road manager for the Jack Jenny and Count Basie orchestras, and then a personal manager.

He left his career as bandleader and became a talent manager, rising to become one of Hollywood’s top personal managers, guiding the careers of Count Basie, Sarah Vaughn, Billy Eckstine and singer Vic Damone. Because of Ebbins’ musical background and his adeptness at arranging scores, he had a knack for picking hit songs for his clients. He also represented actresses Elizabeth Montgomery and Patty Duke, comedian Mort Sahl and actor Peter Lawford, who Ebbins managed for 35 years.

John and Ethel Ross,  became Patty Duke's managers. The Rosses recognized her talent and promoted her as a child actress. Soon after The Miracle Worker became so successful, John and Ethel Ross spoke to Anna’s  [later know as Patty] mother telling her that they felt they needed complete control of her daughter. They needed to make sure her life was acting and little else, and the only way they could continue to teach her the skills she would need as an actress was if Anna moved in with them full time. Frances, having little financial and emotional security of her own, agreed to let her youngest daughter live with the Ross’s. Anna took this personally and for the next several years she resented her mother for giving her up to the Ross’s while all she wanted to do was stay at home with her favorite person in the world: the woman who gave birth to her.  Anna’s name had already been professionally changed to “Patty Duke” by the Ross’s, in a manner that would keep Anna occupied on her psychiatrist’s couch for many years to come.   “Anna Marie is dead” Ethel once said to her. “You’re Patty now.” As Patty’s success continued, the Ross’s behavior would become more and more distorted and dysfunctional. Condition is very good. Provenance: personal files of Milton Ebbins.  Rare and very unusual........150-250

20. Charles Edward Montague (1867-1928)  English journalist, known also as a writer of novels and essays.  Montague was against the First World War prior to its commencement, but once it started he believed that it was right to support it in the hope of a swift resolution.  In 1914, Montague was 47, which was well over the age for enlistment,  but in order to enlist, he dyed his white hair black to enable him to fool the Army into accepting him. H. W. Nevinson would later write that "Montague is the only man I know whose white hair in a single night turned dark through courage." He began as a grenadier-sergeant, and rose to lieutenant and then captain of intelligence in 1915. Later in the war, he became an armed escort for VIPs visiting the battlefield. He escorted such personalities as H.G. Wells and Bernard Shaw. After the end of World War I he wrote in a strong anti-war vein. He wrote that "War hath no fury like a non-combatant." Disenchantment (1922), a collection of newspaper articles about the war,  was one of the first prose works to strongly criticise the way the war was fought, and is a pivotal text in the development of literature about the First World War.  Disenchantment criticised the British Press' coverage of the war and the conduct of the British generals.   Montague accused the latter of being influenced by the "public school ethos" which he condemned as a "gallant robust contempt for "swats" and for all who invented new means to new ends and who trained and used their brains with a will".  Montague was the father of Evelyn Aubrey Montague, the Olympic athlete and journalist depicted in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire.  ALS, Oxford, England, 1927, 1p, 6 x 9 in. A return to Europe followed with further work in England, France, and Italy. Returning to the United States with a contract for additional stage work, Thieme found himself in Boston. He discontinued work on the stage in 1928 and from then on made his living with the sales of his paintings and etchings. Thieme married Lillian Beckett in 1929 and moved to Rockport, MA. Mother Writes George E. Pickett

24. Mary Johnston Pickett (1805-1860) the mother of the future Confederate General, George E. Pickett. A rare letter written to her son George, who is studying law at Quincy, Illinois. The letter was sent by Mary from Richmond, Virginia, Jan. 27th, 1841. George Pickett was 16 years old at the time. Pickett was born in Richmond, Virginia, the first of the eight children of Robert and Mary Pickett, a prominent family of Old Virginia of English origins, and one of the "first families" of Virginia. He was the cousin of future Confederate general Henry Heth. He went to Illinois, to study law, but at the age of 17 he was appointed to the United States Military Academy. Legend has it that Pickett's West Point appointment was secured for him by Abraham Lincoln, but this is largely believed to be a story circulated by his widow following his death. Lincoln, as an Illinois state legislator, could not nominate candidates, although he did give the young man advice after he was accepted; Pickett was actually appointed by Illinois Congressman John T. Stuart, a friend of Pickett's uncle and a law partner of Abraham Lincoln. A year after young George received this letter he was off to West Point. Pickett was popular as a cadet at West Point. He was mischievous and a player of pranks, "... a man of ability, but belonging to a cadet set that appeared to have no ambition for class standing and wanted to do only enough study to secure their graduation." At a time when often a third of the class washed out before graduation, Pickett persisted, working off his demerits and doing enough in his studies to graduate, ranking last out of the 59 surviving students in the Class of 1846. It is a position held with some backhanded distinction, referred to today as the "goat", both for its stubbornness and tenacity. The position usually relegated its holder to a posting commanding infantry in some far away outpost, which if no conflict arose, would offer little opportunity to advance. Two of the most famous "goats" were Pickett and George Armstrong Custer (as was also Pickett's cousin, Harry Heth). All of them had the good fortune to graduate shortly after a war broke out, when the army had a sudden need for officers, greatly improving their opportunities. In this letter [folded stampless letter], 3 full pages, plus the address leaf WHICH IS DOCKETED BY GEORGE PICKETT [himself], his mother Mary asked him about his chances of getting an appointment to West Point, and then goes on at great length to talk about concerns back home about whether George will conduct [behave] himself. She mentions energy and independence of character, etc. George Pickett’s personality has already established itself, apparently enough to cause great worry for his mother. The picture of the painted portrait of Mary Pickett was borrowed from the internet and is not included here. Starting to separate at some of the fold lines; small hole [seal hole] on page 3. Approx. 8 x 10 in............1000-1500

American Physicist Louis W. McKeehan

26. [SCIENCE - WAR] The following are from the papers of the American physicist Louis W. McKeehan (1887-1975) Director of the Physics Laboratories Yale. He took leave of his teaching position to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Capt. Louis McKeehan, head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the Bureau of Ordnance. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point. But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit. With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other universities - anxious to shed the military connection as soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its classified work. Louis McKeehan was, among other things, author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years, 1701-1801 (New York: H. Schuman, 1947). Offered here are several pieces. Includes: 1940 letter to his wife Grace [scan 1]; a 1932 Naval Reserve Fitness document signed by McKeehan [scan 2]; an interesting 1940 document pencil signed by McKeehan [scan 3]; plus 5 other pieces, all showing below...........200-300

Wrote 1945 song "Laura"

29. [FILM - MUSIC] David Raksin (1912- 2004) American composer who was renowned for his work in film and television. With over 100 film scores and 300 television scores to his credit, he became known as the "Grandfather of Film Music."  Typed Letter Signed, 1963, 1p, to Milton Ebbins about Composers and Lyricists Guild of America. Signed in ink.  One of Raksin’s earliest film assignments was as assistant to Charlie Chaplin in the composition of the score to Modern Times (1936). He is perhaps best remembered for the haunting theme to the 1944 movie Laura, which became the 1945 song "Laura". Johnny Mercer put lyrics to this theme, and during Raksin's lifetime this was said to be the second most-recorded song in history following Stardust by Hoagy Carmichael and Mitchell Parish. He also wrote the theme song for (and scored the pilot of) Ben Casey.

This work became very popular with performances at provincial theatres throughout England. In 1830, he conceived the operatic drama Van Diemen's Land, concerning the notorious bush-ranger Michael Howe. But his most popular production was Tom and Jerry (1821), a dramatization of Life in London by Pierce Egan, whose Boxiana Moncrieff had begun to publish in 1818. 37. [FRANCE]  Pierre-Paul Guérin de Tencin (1679-1758), French ecclesiastic, was archbishop of Embrun and Lyon, and a cardinal. His sister Claudine was a spur to his career. After studying with the Oratorians in his native Grenoble, he entered the Sorbonne, where he became prior in 1702, and obtained the doctorate in 1705. He was then appointed Vicar-General of the diocese of Sens and, in 1721, accompanied Cardinal de Rohan[2] to Rome as his conclavist, to support the candidacy of Cardinal Conti (Innocent XIII), from whom he had obtained a promise to bestow the purple on the French minister Guillaume Dubois. He remained at Rome as French chargé d'affaires, with the appointment in commendam of abbot of Trois-Fontaines to support him (1739-1753), until Benedict XIII, with whom he was on cordial terms of intimacy and very influential, consecrated him Archbishop of Embrun (26 June 1724). On 22 February 1739, Guérin de Tencin was created cardinal, of the titulus of Sts. Nereus and Achilleus. He remained at Rome as French ambassador until 1742, when he took possession of the archiepiscopal see of Lyon, to which he had succeeded on 19 November 1740. Louis XV appointed him minister of state in September 1742, though he held no portfolio, and Commander of the Order of Saint-Esprit. He was overzealous in the persecution of the Jansenists, and, at the provincial synod which he held at Embrun from 16 August to 28 September, 1727, he suspended Jean Soanen, Bishop of Senez, a prelate eighty years of age, who had appealed against the Bull Unigenitus. After the death of André-Hercule Cardinal de Fleury , the prime minister to whom he owed much of his political advancement, his influence began to decrease. 38. [FRANCE] Jean Charles Dominique de Lacretelle, (1766-1855) French historian and journalist. Called Lacretelle le jeune to distinguish him from his elder brother, Pierre Louis de Lacretelle. He was born at Metz. He was called to Paris by his brother in 1787, and during the French Revolution belonged, like Pierre, to the party of the Feuillants. He was for some time secretary to the duc de la Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, the famous philanthropist, and afterwards joined the staff of the Journal de Paris, then managed by Suard, and where he had as colleagues André Chénier and Jean-Antoine Roucher. He made no attempt to hide his monarchist sympathies, and these, together with the way in which he reported the trial and death of King Louis XVI of France, put him in danger of his life; to avoid this danger he enlisted in the army, but after Thermidor he returned to Paris and to his newspaper work. He was involved in the royalist movement of the 13th Vendmiaire, and condemned to deportation after the 18th Fructidor; but, thanks to powerful influence, he was left forgotten in prison till after the 18th Brumaire, when he was set at liberty by Joseph Fouché. Under the Empire he was appointed a professor of history in the Faculté des lettres of Paris (1809), and elected as a member of the Académie française (1811). In 1827 he was prime mover in the protest made by the French Academy against the minister Peyronnet's law on the press, which led to the failure of that measure, but this step cost him, as it did Abel-François Villemain, his post as censeur royal.  Under Louis Philippe Lacretelle devoted himself entirely to his teaching and literary work. In 1848 he retired to Mâcon; but there, as in Paris, he was the centre of a brilliant circle, for he was a wonderful causeur, and an equally good listener, and had many interesting experiences to recall. His son Pierre Henri (1815-1899) was a humorous writer and politician of purely contemporary interest.  ALS, date [?], 1p, approx. 8 x 10.5".  VG............100-150

39. [FRANCE] Nicolas Le Camus de Mezieres (1721-1789) French architect and theoretician. He was born and died in Paris. He published several works on architectural and related subjects, including Architecture of Expression, and The Theatre of Desire at the End of the Ancien Régime; Or, The Analogy of Fiction with Architectural Innovation. Le Camus developed a theory of architecture in which the character of a building should express its destination or the social status of its client. Unlike previous character theories in architecture, Le Camus's theory was based on an explicit analogy between architecture and theatre. His architectural mode of expression followed a temporal progression similar to the dramatic unfolding of a play, and gradations in ornamentation throughout the interior of a building resembled a succession of stage sets in a theatrical performance. 40.  [FRANCE] ANTOINE-ALEXANDRE  BARBIER (1765-1825) Prior to the Revolution, Barbier was a maths and physics teacher, and in 1789, he was the vicar at Dammartin. He accepted the "constitution civile du clergé" and became priest at La Ferté-sous-Jouarre. In 1794 he was given the job of itemising and safeguarding the huge number of books and papers that had been confiscated by the revolutionaries on behalf of the Nation. These books, many of which were falling apart due to insects and poor conservation conditions, were also taking up offices that were required by the local authorities. Having constructed proper shelving for the books and introduced air-flow systems to allow ventilation between the shelves, the monumental task of cataloguing the confiscated works remained. This task required the assistance of specialists: archivists, curators, bibliophiles and librarians were called in to sort through the books, destroy any considered "seditious", sell any that were no longer needed and replace any considered important enough in the public libraries. A large of number of public libraries benefitted from this process, in particular the Bibliothèque Nationale. In 1795, Barbier was seconded to Gaspard Michel Leblond with the task of reducing the huge book depots in Paris and in Versailles, sorting, cataloguing and selling the books stored on these sites. Barbier was also heavily involved in the creation of provincial public libraries and the cataloguing of the books stored therein.  In 1798, Barbier created the bibliothèque du ministère de l'Intérieur, which was designed to hold the collections that formerly belonged to the Académie Française and the Académie  des Inscriptions et Belle-Lettres, as well as any works considered worthwhile that had been seized from libraries belonging to émigrés or those condemned to death. This library became the Conseil D'Etat's library in 1799, shortly after 18 Brumaire, and Barbier became its librarian. Putting together a catalogue for the library, he abandoned the traditional alphabetical classification, instead opting for classification by subject-matter.  In 1807, Barbier replaced Louis-Madeleine Ripault and was put in charge of Napoleon's personal libraries at Compiègne, Rambouillet and Trianon as well as the travel libraries that Napoleon took with him whilst on campaign. The first travel library, conceived in July 1808, included texts on a variety of different subjects: novels, history, poetry, and theatre. Barbier was also asked to write numerous reports regarding the history, geography and religious issues of various regions and countries which Napoleon used in his political and military planning.  Barbier was also expected to keep the French Emperor constantly supplied with reading material, along with reports, analyses and commentaries regarding each publication. Napoleon, known to be a voracious reader, complained on a number of occasions about the lack of reading material at his disposal, which led to letters being dispatched to Barbier, reminding him of his duties regarding this matter. In his role as "conseiller littéraire", he was also expected to brief Napoleon when the Emperor was back in Paris. He also served the Empress Josephine in a similar manner, and managed her libraries at the Tuileries, Compiègne, Saint-Cloud, Fontainebleau, Trianon, Rambouillet and at her other residences. Between 1808 and 1810, he published his Nouvelle bibliothèque d'un homme de goût, which was based on Louis-Mayeul Chaudon's Bibliothèque d'un homme de goût. This catalogue gathered together various critical and analytical extracts from works and periodicals dedicated to literary criticism, adding to and correcting the original work of Chaudon. The goal of this catalogue was to examine both modern and classical literature and separate the "wheat from the chaff", rewrite any critiques that were unmerited, and ensure that books which did not deserve to be forgotten were not, whilst books that were unworthy of remembrance were removed. The catalogue included entries for both French and foreign literature, as well as offering notes on the best editions and most accurate translations, where necessary. Despite his work for Napoleon, Barbier remained principled and incurred the wrath of the Emperor on a number of occasions: as well as being reluctant to forward any works that he considered mediocre (despite the Emperor's continuous desire for new reading material), he also refused to catalogue a number of books dedicated to or concerning Napoleon and his numerous successes. Works that were omitted from the libraries that Barbier curated included Relation de la bataille de Marengo, Vies de Bonaparte, and Histoires de l'Empereur Napoléon, which he argued were written by "second-rate writers", driven by greed and a desire to flatter the Emperor. Napoleon nevertheless insisted that Relation... be inserted into all of his libraries, despite his librarian's reluctance. During the Restoration, Barbier was put in charge of the royal libraries, but was dismissed from the King's service in 1822, for reasons not listed in his biographies (although Muriel Brot hypothesises that this may have been simply due to his prolonged service for Napoleon). Barbier was severely affected by the dismissal and fell ill shortly afterwards, dying in 1825. Offered here is a document signed, 1807, one page, approx. 7 x 9.5".  Appears to be about Certificate of Pension.  We are unable to find any prices for documents signed by Barbier however some of the books he authored have sold at auction for as high as $11,400.  Very good condition........200-300

54. [ART] Frank Paton  (1855-1909) was an English artist of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, best known for his paintings of animals and scenes of rural life. He was a successful artist during his lifetime and could even count Queen Victoria as an admirer of his work.  His most famous compositions, "Fairest of Them All" and "Puss in Boots" (1880), have adorned many a wall in the form of plates and posters. In addition, his series of printed Christmas cards published between 1880 and 1909 have become an affordable way for those interested in Paton's art to begin a collection.  Frank Paton showed an early talent for drawing animals and was allowed to follow his artistic bent.  His first known exhibition was at the age of sixteen, the piece being a portrait of a German peasant girl. Family rumour has it that Paton briefly spent time in France working in stained glass before being recalled by his father.  Although never a member of the Royal Academy, a total of 20 works by Paton were exhibited at their annual selling exhibition between the years 1878 and 1890.   From 1890 Frank Paton no longer exhibited at the Royal Academy following a dispute with the organisers.  His reputation firmly established, it was of little consequence and the artist continued to work until his final days. At the time of his death Paton was living in Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex.  Original etching, plate signed, 1884, image approx. 7 x 9-1/8 in. Contained in old mat.  VG............150-200

Original Etching Plate - Walt Kuhn

71. [ART] WALT KUHN [1877-1949]. American painter. An ORIGINAL Walt Kuhn copper etching plate, title is ARCHAIC NUDE. Plate size is approx. 6-1/4 x 8 in. This plate still has some life in it and etchings could be pulled from it. Very seldom does an original etching plate by an important artist ever reach the open market as they usually are in institutional collections. Provenance: Kuhn Estate. It is difficult to get a good scan of this and the picture below isn't very good. He did not etch his initials or signature into the plate into the plate, which was his normal practice. I don't think he ever etched his signature into any of his plates although he sometimes would etch initials, this was seldom. This is guaranteed to be an authentic Walt Kuhn plate without a time limit to the original purchaser. We will send a letter of guarantee and provenance to the buyer. The portrait photo of Kuhn shown below IS NOT for sale. Insured shipping based on zone. In 1967 the Kennedy Galleries [NYC] held an exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints. The catalogue states that Walt Kuhn's prints are of the greatest rarity. Of certain subjects only one to six impressions exist. Others vary in number of impressions, but none exceed fifty of any subject. The catalogue also says - Walt Kuhn's position in the ranks of our foremost American painters has long been assured. What is less familiar to the general public - and indeed to many collectors and institutions - is his work in the graphic media. With the exception of a few examples shown during his lifetime, the greater portion of his prints has remained locked up and forgotten in a warehouse these many years. On the occasion of the first major exhibition of his paintings to be held in New York in several decades, it is our privilege to show the etchings and lithographs that place Walt Kuhn among the most venturesome and exciting graphic artists of the 1920s and 30s. Of the 50 etchings listed in the Kennedy exhibition 41 are in the 6 or less impressions category, with 9 known to have up to 50 impressions. WE ARE NOT SURE HOW MANY PRINTS WERE PULLED from it, however it was 50 or less. Many of you already know that we own the original Walt Kuhn etching plates. ...................2000-3000

His sister, Sarah, became the step-mother of the future U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln. See the article THAT ROGUE, WILLIAM BUSH, by Blaine V. Houmes, the Iowa physician and collector of Lincolniana. This article appears in The MANUSCRIPT, Summer 2002. William Bush acquired land like his parents, and by 1817 had married and built an attractive brick house [Elizabethtown area], a sign of sure success. He served on jury duty with Thomas Lincoln, after of Abraham and acquired the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had lived, before they left for Indiana∞, and later Illinois. Although prosperous, he was frequently entangled in lawsuits. His reputation was guarded and he did not enjoy the respect of other members of the Bush family. Little is known of Lincoln's relationship with the Bush family. Lincoln claimed that his family's removal (to Indiana) was partly on account of slavery, but chiefly on account of the difficulty in land titles in Kentucky. Thomas Lincoln was known to be anti-slavery, and as a young boy Abraham probably observed slaves being taken in chains to Southern markets, on the road beside his home. Carl Sandburg and other historians have not dwelt on the cantankerous nature of the President's uncle by marriage, let alone the fact that there was a slave-trader in the family. We wish to give credit to Blaine Houmes for much of what appears in this description.  Approx. 6-1/8 x 7-1/2 in. Rare!............400-600

89. Phillippe Edouard de Verneuil (1805-1873) French paleontologist. He was born in Paris and educated in law, but being of independent means he was free to follow his own inclinations, and having attended lectures on geology by Jean-Baptiste Elie de Beaumont he was so attracted to the subject that he devoted himself assiduously to the study of science. He spent several years in travel through various parts of Europe, specially examining the geology of the Crimea, on which he published an essay (Mem. Soc. Geol. France, 1837). He next investigated the Devonian rocks and fossils of the Bas-Boulonnais; and in 1839 accompanied Sedgwick and Murchison in a study of the older Palaeozoic rocks of the Rhenish provinces and Belgium, the palaeontological results being communicated to the Geological Society of London in conjunction with the Vicomte d'Archiac. When Murchison commenced his geological examination of the Russian empire, he requested de Verneuil to accompany him, and the researches of the latter were incorporated in the second volume of The Geology of Russia in Europe and the Ural Mountains (1845). Subsequently de Verneuil paid a visit to the United States to study the history of the palaeozoic rocks in that country, and the results were published in 1847 (Bull. Soc. Geol. France). In later years he made numerous expeditions into Spain, and his observations were embodied in Carte geologique de l'Espagne et du Portugal (1864), prepared in association with Edouard Collomb. In 1853 the Wollaston medal of the Geological Society of London was awarded to him, and in 1860 he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Society. He died in Paris. ALS, 186?, 3pp, 5-1/4 x 8 in. In her role at the airline, she also flew on White House press charters as chief purser, accompanying Presidents John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon on official trips.  She was with JFK in Berlin when he gave his famous “Ich bein ein Berliner” speech and in Dallas the day he was shot. “I was on Air Force One when the word came in” that he had died, she said. “I fainted in the aisle and somebody got brandy and poured it down me.” Before she traded in her swinging-single gal status to marry Butler Aviation CEO Paul Dopp in 1971, the Floridian said she also dated a dizzying array of Congressmen, movie stars, and other high-ranking officials, including then-Rep. 164. [LINCOLN] LEONARD W. VOLK (1828-1895) American sculptor. Most famous for making a life mask of American President Abraham Lincoln. In 1857, he settled in Chicago, where he helped to establish the Academy of Design and was for eight years its head. In 1860 he made a life mask of Lincoln, of whom only one other was ever made (by Clark Mills in 1865). In the early part of spring in 1860, during Abraham Lincoln's visit to Chicago, Volk asked him to sit for a bust. When Lincoln agreed, the artist decided to start by doing a life mask. Lincoln found the process of letting wet plaster dry on his face, followed by a skin-stretching removal process, "anything but agreeable." But he endured it with good humor, and when he saw the final bust, he was quite pleased, declaring it "the animal himself." Volk later used the life mask and bust of 1860 as the basis for other editions, including a full-length statue of Lincoln. Signed 1893 bank check. VG.................100-200

Original Portrait of the King of Spain c. 1765

178. [ART] Filippo Morghen (Florence, 1730 - Naples, 1777) accomplished eighteenth century engraver. He studied art in Rome for a period of seven years before settling in Naples where he created etchings and engravings. Filippo Morghen was a leading engraver for the recent archaeological discoveries detailed in the Antiquities of Herculaneum, published in Naples in 1757, and the sole engraver and publisher of Views of Ruins in the Environs of Naples, published in 1766. In fact, reference is made to the discoveries at Herculaneum (then a Spanish possession) in the lower right corner of this portrait engraving of Charles III, King of Spain, where we see ancient pottery and sculpture as well as archeological tools-of-the-trade, such as a shovel and a pick. Filippo Morghen's fine engravings earned him the title of 'Engraver to the King of the Two Sicilies'. He was also the father and teacher of Rafaello Morghen (1758-1833), one of the most influential engravers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Carlos III Hispania Atque Indiarum Rex is based upon a design created by the eighteenth century Italian artist, Camillus Paderni (Naples, c. 1720 - 1770). Original Engraving, portrait of Carlos III Hispania Atque Indiarum Rex (Charles III, King of Spain), image approx. 17 X 12" plus margins. Printed on mid eighteenth century hand-made, laid paper. It is a fine, early impression in excellent condition throughout and an outstanding example of the 18th century portrait engraving. This original engraving stands as a prime example of the famous art of Filippo Morghen. VG............250-350

181. [ART] Christian Haldenwang (German, 1770-1831) one of the finest German landscape engravers of the early 19th Century. His main works includes the cycle of the "Four Seasons" after Claude Lorrains paintings in the collection of the Ermitage Leningrad. He born at Durlach in 1770, was articled to Christian von Mechel, an engraver and dealer in art goods at Basle. He lived five years in this establishment, destitute of every means that could promote his education as an artist; for it was rather a factory than a school of art. The examples set before him were only French engravings. He, however, was able to see some of Middiman's ' Select Views in Great Britain,' and others by Woollett, which were probably presents from those artists to Mechel. Seeing these prints excited Haldenwang creating a desire to imitate them, and he determined to make Woollett his model. During the latter part of his time he made some attempts at aquatint, which, though injurious to his health, had beneficial results; for some well-executed works of this class obtained the notice of the Chalcographic Society, and he went to Dessau in 1796, where he remained for eight years, producing many beautiful landscapes, and improving his skill in that style of engraving. The reputation he acquired induced the Margrave Charles Frederick of Baden to appoint him engraver to the court of Carlsruhe, but during the time the French had the ascendancy in Germany, he was obliged to work for the booksellers. It was then that he executed the views in the ' Rhenish Pocket-book,' and the two masterly engravings for the ' Travels in Brazil ' of Prince Maximilian of Neuwied. He also executed four landscapes, after Claude and Ruisdael, for the ' Musee Napo- leon.' He died at Bad Rippoldsau in 1831. Original engraving by Haldenwang, title: "Paysage", image size approx. 11-1/4 x 14-1/2" plus wide clean margins. Circa 1820-1828. Remarkable detail...........100-150

187. [BRITISH] William Waldegrave Palmer, 2nd Earl of Selborne KG, GCMG, PC (1859-1942) British politician and colonial administrator. Like his father, he became a Liberal Unionist in 1886 when William Ewart Gladstone proposed Irish Home Rule. He retained his seat till 1892, when he was elected for Edinburgh West. In 1895 he was appointed Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies by his father-in-law Lord Salisbury, where he became junior to the Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain. During the difficult period before the outbreak of the Second Boer War he progressed rapidly. In November 1900 Selborne was sworn of the Privy Council and made First Lord of the Admiralty under Salisbury, with a seat in the cabinet, an office he retained when Arthur Balfour became Prime Minister in 1902. In 1905 he succeeded Lord Milner as High Commissioner for South Africa and governor of the Transvaal and Orange River colonies. He assumed office at Pretoria in May of that year. He had gone out with the intention of guiding the destinies of South Africa during a period when the ex-Boer republics would be in a transitional state between crown colony government and self-government, and letters patent were issued granting the Transvaal representative institutions. But the Liberal Party came into office in Britain the following December, before the new constitution had been established, and, the decision was now taken to give both the Transvaal and Orange River colonies self-government without delay. Lord Selborne accepted the changed situation, and the experiment proved successful. He ceased to be governor of the Orange River Colony on its assumption of self-government in June 1907, but retained his other posts until May 1910, retiring on the eve of the establishment of the Union of South Africa. The despatch, dated 7 January 1907 and known as the Selborne Memorandum, in which he reviewed the situation in its economic and political aspects, was a comprehensive statement of the dangers inherent in the existing system and of the advantages likely to attend union. The document had in fact been compiled by Lionel Curtis and other members of Milner's Kindergarten. The force of its appeal had a marked influence on the course of events, while the loyalty with which Lord Selborne co-operated with the Botha administration was an additional factor in reconciling the Dutch and British communities. He returned to England with his reputation, according to the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica, "as a statesman enhanced by the respect of all parties, and with a practical experience, second only to that of Lord Milner, of British imperialism in successful operation." His experience made him a valuable ally in the movement among the Unionist party at home for Tariff Reform and Colonial Preference, to which he could now give his full support. In 1915 Selborne returned to government during the First World War when he became President of the Board of Agriculture in the war time coalition of Liberal prime minister H. H. Asquith . He resigned the following year and did not hold high political office again. The Selborne Committee on Church and State from 1914 to 1916 was chaired by Lord Selborne. Letter SWigned, Downing Street, 1896, 2pp. To E. Bruce Low regarding an appointment. Stationery has the embossed Colonial Office seal. VG........50-75

Unable to procure adequate instruments, he constructed and constantly improved his own telescopes. In 1781 he discovered a new planet, which he named Georgium Sidus in honor of George III, king of Great Britain, but which is now universally called Uranus (q.v.) . A year later he was appointed private astronomer to the king, a position that enabled him to devote all his time to his astronomic pursuits. He erected a telescope at Slough with a 48-in. (1.22-m) mirror and a focal length of 40 ft (12.2 m). Using this, he discovered two satellites of Uranus and the sixth and seventh satellites of Saturn (q.v.) . He studied the rotation period of many planetsand the motion of double stars, and also cataloged more than 800 double stars ( see Star). He studied nebulas, contributing new information on their constitution and increasing the number of observed nebulas from about 100 to 2500. Herschel was the first to propose that these nebulas were composed of stars. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1781 and knighted in 1816. He is considered the founder of sidereal astronomy. 281. Angela Morgan (1875-1957) American author, poet and journalist. Details of the early life of the Morgan family, which included three other sisters besides Angela and a brother Albert, are somewhat scanty. According to the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan, which has custody of Angela Morgan's earlier papers, she was most likely born circa. 1875 or thereabouts during the time when her family was residing in Yazoo County, Mississippi. Her given name at birth was "Nina Lillian" which she later changed to Angela. According to the Bentley sketch her father was Albert Talmon Morgan, a Quaker, who had left Oberlin College in 1861 to join the Union Army where he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel. After the war he settled as a "carpetbagger" on a plantation in Mississippi where he met and married Carolyn Victoria Highgate (1860-1926), the daughter of a mulatto father and a white mother, and who was a teacher in the Freedmen's Bureau. His experiences in Mississippi during Reconstruction are described in his book Yazoo, Or On the Pickett Line of Freedom in the South (1884). From 1876 until 1885 the family resided in Washington, D.C. The Morgans then moved to Lawrence, Kansas where Col. Morgan engaged in business and in the practice of law. But he proved unsuccessful at both. In 1890 he left his family in Topeka to prospect for gold and silver in Colorado, returning to visit his family only occasionally. He died in Denver on April 15, 1922. After the departure of their father the Morgan sisters formed a quartet, and managed by their brother Albert who also sang baritone, earned their livelihood on the stage by giving musical performances as "The Morgan Sisters" and "The Angela Sisters". The group apparently performed until 1898 when the death of one of the sisters (Helen) and the marriage of the others ended the collaboration. Angela then became a journalist. A major break in her career which permitted her to escape from the drudgery of newspaper work and to devote herself entirely to creative writing occurred in 1915 when a prominent preacher (G. Campbell Morgan) whom she had been assigned to interview, read her poem "God's Man" from his pulpit in New York. This led to its publication in Collier's Weekly, and to the launching of her career as a free lance poet and author. Offered here is a nice 8x10 sepia photograph boldly signed on the front "Faithfully yours Angela Morgan." On the back she has and inscribed it to Rev. Cornelius Greenway, the legendary autograph collector. She adds "And sincere gratitude for your deep appreciation of my poems!". VG............75-100
