Miles. COL. Nicholas MILLER - Kentucky Pioneer from the
Elizabethtown area. Remembered as an Indian fighter. Sam.
Haycraft, the Ky. historian, gives the following account: "Dan
Vertrees was a stalwart young man of daring. He, with the late
Colonel Nicholas Miller and others, were pursuing a band of
Indians; Miller, then young, was tall, slenderly built, as
active as a cat, and as fleet as hind, and as brave as Julius
Caesar. This company coming upon the Indians, suddenly, a
desperate fight ensued. Vertrees was killed at the first fire.
A stout warrior seized a white man, wrestled his gun from him
and was about to cleve his head with an axe. Miller at that
moment, with a celerity of action which few men could equal,
and with a power that few possessed ..... snatched the white
man from the Indian as he would a chicken from a hawk, and,
with an equal rapid motion, killed the Indian. This turned the
tide, and the remaining Indians fled, leaving several dead on
the ground."In 1793 William McCIung was sworn and admitted to
the bar as attorney. William McClung, Esq., was appointed
Commonwealth's Attorney for this court. Commonwealth's
Attorneys were not then commissioned by the Governor, each
county appointed their own prosecuting attorney, and were paid
out of the county levy. VG.........400-600

7-3/4 x 10". The original was sent to the Secretary of
the Navy, Washington DC [Benjamin F. Tracy]. This "copy"
letter was sent to Henry
Lyon, who
became commander of the Nipsic. Dated about a month after
this famous naval incident (The Samoan Crisis ). This letter is of
high praise for Lieut. Commander Henry W. Lyon, saving
the Nipsic "...to his excellent service during the
Hurricane of March 16th and 17th, 1889, and since then
in saving valuable property from the wreck. During the
gale, he intelligently carried out my orders;
personally supervising the many plans to keep out
water, getting lines to the Vaudalia to prevent the
total destruction of the Trenton and many other duties
besides..." Norman Von Heidreich Farquhar (1840-1907) was
born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, attended the U.S.
Naval Academy during 1854-59. After graduation, he served with
the Africa Squadron until September 1861. Lieutenant Farquhar
spent most of the Civil War off the U.S. Atlantic coast and in
the West Indies, serving in the gunboats Mystic, Sonoma and
Mahaska and the cruisers Rhode Island and Santiago de Cuba. He
was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in mid-1865,
a few months after the fighting ended, and was on duty at the

GERMAN WORLD WAR II ARCHIVE - An interesting German archive of 15 documents
pertaining to the attempts by one Mrs. Terhaggen to have her
enlisted son return home to the family's weaving factory that
supplies clothes for German troops, of which the son had
become the boss following the father's death on Oct. 10, 1944.
She writes on Nov. 14, 1944, on letterhead of the family's
factory, "Carl Hesper Nacht", to Obergruppenführer Albert
Bormann requesting that her son, a naval officer, be returned
home. She states that hers is the last weaving shop open and
without her son there to run it, it will undoubtedly have to
close. She asks Bormann to rush the request. This appeal must
have been forwarded to a senior Kriegsmarine officer who
subsequently writes to Admiral KARL-JESCO VON PUTTKAMMER on
Dec. 1, 1944. The unidentified officer writes : "...The
comments submitted in the petition of the wife Terheggen I
first ordered to rush the 15.1.45...The request I give you,
Admiral, return with a copy of the reply to Mrs.
Terheggen...". Docketed and signed in pencil at bottom by
Puttkammer, also Bormann's ink
signature is near top of the letter..
Puttkammer (1900-1981) was naval adjutant to Hitler; present
at the 20 July Plot, he was injured and awarded the Wounded
Badge. He was sent to Berghof to destroy Hitler's papers but
was not present during his final days. Additional documents
include: an official letter from the Führer's office regarding
an elderly woman trying to donate funds "for the
reconstruction of Berlin", which are not accepted; another
document regarding a court case involving: "...continued
infidelity and continued corruption..." of one Richard Mahler,
a leader of public health in Berlin. As a result of this,
Mahler was removed from his post by Goebbels and given four
years in prison; another document discusses cases of fruit
sent to Hitler (which made him "very happy"); another
concerning empty boxes that need to be returned to a plant as
soon as railway barriers are lifted; and questionnaires, etc.
In lightly worn condition, overall very good and worthy of
proper translation. Includes another Bormann
signed memo, and possibly others that are initialed.
NOTE:
Albert Bormann
(1902-1989) served as an adjutant
to Adolf Hitler, and was the younger brother of Martin
Bormann. Hitler was fond of Bormann and found him to be
trustworthy. In 1938, Bormann was assigned to a small group of
adjutants who were not subordinate to Martin Bormann.
The relationship between Martin and Albert became so caustic
that Martin referred to him not even by name but as "the man
who holds the Führer's coat". Further in 1938, Bormann
became Chief of Main office I: Persönliche Angelegenheiten des
Führers (Personal Affairs of the Führer) of the Kanzlei des
Führers. In that job, Bormann handled much of Hitler's routine
correspondence. He became private secretary for Hitler.
Karl-Jesco Otto Robert von Puttkamer
(1900-1981) German rear admiral who was naval adjutant
to Nazi Germany's leader Adolf Hitler during World War
II. Puttkamer was injured on 20 July 1944 when the bomb
exploded during the July 20 Plot attempt to kill Hitler and
was awarded the Wound Badge (20 July 1944). On 20 April
1945, Hitler told his staff, "the situation during the last
few days has changed to such an extent that I am forced to
reduce my staff". Puttkamer was ordered by Hitler to leave the
Berlin Führerbunker. On 23 April, Puttkamer and several others
were flown by aircraft to the Obersalzberg. Puttkamer was
ordered to the Berghof to destroy Hitler's papers there.
Therefore, Puttkamer was not with Hitler during his final few
days in the Führerbunker. Following the German surrender on 8
May 1945, Puttkamer was held in captivity until May 1947. He
died aged 80 in Munich.

[ART] Sir
HUBERT von HERKOMER, (1849-1914,
painter, R.A., R.W.S.) SELF-PORTRAIT, original etching, head
and shoulders, with his children Siegfried and Elsa below
half-length as a vignette, signed ('HH') and dated '79 on the
plate, titled 'Published London April 1st 1880 by The British
and Foreign Artists Association', 'Entered according to act of
Congress in the year 1880 by Knoedler & Co in the office
of the Librarian of Congress at Washington', extremely fine
impression, 13-1/2 x 8 in. Herkomer regarded this as his
best etching. He described the circumstances of the production
of it when on a camping trip to Wales in 1879. 'As I knew the
painting of one landscape would not give me sufficient
occupation for so many weeks, I took with me all the
paraphernalia of the etcher - plates, grounds, dishes, acids,
and a small printing press (an invention of Mr Hamerton's).
This wretched little contrivance proved utterly inadequate for
my work. In order to get a decent impression we tightened the
rollers to their last gasp, and then we dragged the whole
machine around the tent in the vain attempt to turn the toy
handles. Still, it was under these circumstances that I did -
what I consider my best etching - a portrait of (the handy
model) myself, with my two children in the lower corner of the
plate.' Very good condition. In an auction
at Bonhams [London] [2005] another example of this
etching was estimated at £500 - 600 US$ 840 -
1,000. It realized $730.........700-900

40. Shusaku Arakawa - ORIGINAL signed & inscribed ink drawing in book about his art - PADIGLIONE D'ARTE CONTEMPORANEA, hardbound, 1984, containing 34 b/w illustrations, 10.5 x 10.75 in. Very good condition. We guarantee the authenticity of this drawing.
Shusaku Arakawa - Dadaist Conceptualist Shusaku Arakawa was born in Nagoya, Japan, on July 6, 1936. He studied medicine and mathematics at Tokyo University from 1954 to 1958, and art at the Musashino College of Art, Tokyo, before completing his degree he left Japan. In 1958 he began submitting paintings to the Yomiuri Independent exhibitions and in 1961 held his first solo exhibition at Mudo Gallery, Tokyo. In 1960, he started a neo-Dada group, programming Happenings, and later gaining recognition with a series of boxes. In 1962, he came to New York and created a new series, "Diagram," in which silhouettes of combs, footprints, tennis rackets, arrows and refrigerators were arranged on canvas. Gradually he replaced the silhouettes with words only. Throughout the 1960s he had a number of solo exhibitions at Dwan Gallery, New York and Los Angeles, at Galerie Schmela, Dsseldorf, and Galleria Schwartz, Milan. In 1966 he was given his first museum exhibition at the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands, and in 1970 represented Japan at the Venice Biennale. During the 1970s museums featured his work throughout Europe and the United States and in 1981 a large retrospective was organized by the Stdtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich. With his wife, the poet Madeline H. Gins, Arakawa has also published books that "parallel the preoccupations of his paintings," in particular The Mechanism of Meaning (1979). In 1991 a retrospective was organized by the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Arakawa and Gins increasingly concentrate on collaborative installation pieces and architectural design, such as the Utopian City of Reversible destiny seen at the Guggenheim Soho in 1997. Arakawa denies, like all Conceptualists and Pop Art neo-Dadaists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, the artist's hand in his paintings. Expressionistic or emotive marks on the canvas are few, serving only as a foil to the deadpan, depersonalized, mechanical style. Paintings such as "Out of distance/Out of texture" appear to be aimed at the intellect devoid of feeling for life, poetry or spirituality."...............450-650

43. Kentucky Pioneer
Document, 1811, written and signed by Ben Helm,
Hardin County [Elizabethtown] Kentucky. Legal matter
concerning: WilliamBush, the brother of Sarah, Abraham
Lincoln's step-mother. Approx. 6-1/2 x 5-1/8". Signed on the
verso by Robert Bleakley.Robert Bleakley, opened a store in
Elizabethtown with William Montgomery, another Irishman. Their
establishment is said to have been the first such operation in
the pioneer village that could ready be called a "store."
Montgomery was an Orangeman, who was engaged in the rebellion
In Ireland in 1798. He was arrested and confined in a prison
from which men were taken and executed daily He was released
from prison through the efforts of his aunt, who was married
to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland on the condition that he
would emigrate to America. Wm. Montgomery and Bleakley opened
adry goods store. In 1806 they hired the father of Abraham
Lincoln [Thomas] to take a flatboat down the Mississippi river
with their merchandise to be sold in New Orleans. They paid
Tom Lincoln 16 pounds gold and a credit of 13 pounds in gold.
Their store account books show Tom Lincoln buying "two twists
of tobacco & one pint of whisky." And thebooks also show
that in May 1806, Thomas went on a buying spree, purchasing
silk, linen, scarlet cloth, dozens of buttons, etc. Earlier
that year he had purchased an aristocratic beaver hat & a
pair of silk suspenders for $1.50. He was, at this time,
courting his future bride Nancy Hanks [Abe Lincoln's mother].
After the wedding he made his home in a cabin close to the
courthouse in Elizabethtown. He then purchased at their store,
knives, forks, spoons, thread, needles, silk & tobacco.
Carl Sandburg wrote about Bleakley and Lincoln.BEN HELM (b.
Fairfax county, Va., May 8, 1767; son of Capt. Thomas Helm,
apioneer settler of Kentucky, who moved from Virginia to the
Falls of Ohio, in the fall of 1779. In 1801-03 Ben Helm
erected the first brick house built there. He became a
surveyor; was state senator, 1796-1800; clerk of the Hardin
county courts, 1800-17; an officer with the rank of major in
the war of 1812; filled various other offices of honor and
trust in Kentucky: purchased the farm owned by Christopher
Bush, father of Mrs. Sarah (Bush) Johnston Lincoln,
step-mother of Abraham Lincoln, and was a partner in a general
store with Duff Green [later, American statesman], conducting
the business as Green & Helm. He died in Elizabethtown,
1858, nearly 91 years old.Apparently William Bush was somewhat
of a troublemaker in the E-town area. He was born in 1763, and
in 1828 he acquired the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had
lived, before they left for Indiana. His sister, Sarah, became
the step-mother of the future U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln.
See the article THAT ROGUE, WILLIAM BUSH, by Blaine V. Houmes,
the Iowa physician and collector of Lincolniana. This article
appears in The MANUSCRIPT, Summer 2002. William Bush acquired
land like his parents, and by 1817 had married and built an
attractive brick house [Elizabethtown area], a sign of sure
success. He served on jury duty with Thomas Lincoln, after of
Abraham and acquired the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns
had lived, before they left for Indiana∞, and later Illinois.
Although prosperous, he was frequently entangled in lawsuits.
His reputation was guarded and he did not enjoy the respect og
other members of the Bush family. Little is known of Lincoln’s
relationship with the Bush family. Lincoln claimed that his
family’s “removal (to Indiana) was partly on account of
slavery, but chiefly on account of the difficulty in land
titles in Kentucky.” Thomas Lincoln was known to be
anti-slavery, and as a young boy Abraham probably observed
slaves being taken in chains to Southern markets, on the road
beside his home. Carl Sandburg and other historians have not
dwlt on the cantankerous nature of the President’s uncle by
marriage,8 let alone the fact that there was a slave-trader in
the family. We wish to give credit to Blaine Houmes for much
of what appears in this description. See pictures of this
article here. Fine............400-600

46. [CARDINAL] Romualdo
Braschi-Onesti (1753-1817) Italian
Cardinal. He was the cardinal-nephew of Pius VI (1775–1799),
was the penultimate cardinal-nephew. Despite Pius VI's lineage
to a noble Cesena family, his only sister had married a man
from the poor Onesti family. Therefore, he commissioned a
genealogist to discover (and inflate) some trace of nobility
in the Onesti lineage, an endeavor which yielded only a
circuitous connection to Saint Romualdo. Nephew of Pius
VI, son of Marquis Honest di Cesena, was adopted, with his
brother Louis, who lacked family Braschi male succession.
Created Cardinal in 1781, was Grand prior of the order of
Malta, prefect of Propaganda, Secretary of small and one of
the promoters, in 1800, the election of Pius VII. Signature on

48. [ART] Walt
Kuhn (1877-1949) American painter and an
organizer of the famous Armory Show of 1913, which was
America\'s first large-scale introduction to European
Modernism. In 1925, Kuhn almost died from a duodenal ulcer.
Following an arduous recovery, he became an instructor at the
Art Students League of New York. In 1933, the aging artist
organized his first retrospective. During these years, he
began to question his earlier allegiance to European
Modernism. On a 1931 trip to Europe with Marie and W. Averell
Harriman, his staunchest supporters, he declined to join the
Harrimans on their visits to the studios of Picasso, Georges
Braque, and Fernand Léger. Yet neither did he want to align
himself with the anti-Modernist camp of Regionalists like
Thomas Hart Benton and politically-minded social realists. In
the art politics of the day, Kuhn was caught between two
extremes. By the 1940s, Kuhn’s behavior began to take on
unsound characteristics. He became increasingly irascible and
distant from old friends. When the Ringling Brothers Circus
was in town, he attended night after night. He also became
frustrated by the lack of attention his own work was receiving
and was particularly strident about the Museum of Modern
Art\'s support of abstraction and neglect of American art in
the postwar period. In 1948, he was institutionalized, and on
July 13, 1949, he died suddenly from a perforated ulcer.
Offered here are two letters he wrote on August 4,
1925, from Salzburg, Austria. Both letters are on a
single sheet, his retained copies, written and signed by
him. One one side he writes to the banking firm firm of
Morgan, Harjes & Co., saying that he will be travelling to
London in a few weeks, requests that his account be
transferred to Morgan in London. On the other side, same date,
he writes to the local water department in Maine. Says they
will be travelling in Europe for the summer, they have closed
their place in Ogunquit [Maine], disconnected the water pipes,
will use no water therefore no water bill to pay. The
picture showing here is NOT included.......300-400

50. Sir Everard
Home, 1st Baronet FRS (1756-1832 )
British surgeon. Home was born in Kingston-upon-Hull and
educated at Westminster School. He gained a schoalrship to
Trinity College, Cambridge, but decided instead to become a
pupil of his brother-in-law, John Hunter, at St George's
Hospital. Hunter had married his sister, the poet and
socialite Anne Home, in July 1771. He assisted Hunter in
many of his anatomical investigations, and in the autumn of
1776 he partly described Hunter's collection. There is also
considerable evidence that Home plagiarized Hunter's work,
sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly; he also
systematically destroyed his brother-in-law's papers in order
to hide evidence of this plagiarism. Having qualified at
Surgeons' Hall in 1778, Home was appointed assistant surgeon
at the naval hospital, Plymouth. In 1787 he appointed
assistant surgeon, later surgeon, at St George's Hospital. He
became Sergeant Surgeon to the King in 1808 and Surgeon at
Chelsea Hospital in 1821. He was made a baronet (of Well Manor
in the County of Southampton) in 1813. He was the first
to describe the fossil creature (later 'Ichthyosaur')
discovered near Lyme Regis by Joseph Anning and Mary Anning in
1812. Following John Hunter, he initially suggested it had
affinities with fish. Home also did some of the earliest
studies on the anatomy of platypus and noted that it was not
viviparous, theorizing that it was instead
ovoviviparous. Home published prolifically on human and
animal anatomy. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal
Society in 1787, gave their Croonian Lecture many times
between 1793 and 1829 and received their Copley Medal in
1807. ALS, Richmond, Feb. 5, no yr, 4pp, to

His father, George Carline, his mother, Anne, and brother Sydney, his sister Hilda (Mrs Stanley Spencer) and his wife, Nancy, were all painters. Carline in 1913 attended Percyval Tudor-Hart's Academie de Peinture, in Paris. After a short period teaching, Carline served in World War I and was appointed an Official War Artist. With his brother he became noted for war pictures from the air. He was elected LG in 1920, at which time the Carlines' Hampstead home became a centre for artists such as Henry Lamb, John Nash and Mark Gertler. During this period Carline was clearly influenced by Stanley Spencer, transforming everyday scenes into something monumental. Carline achieved this, however, without exaggerating form or gestures to the degree that Spencer did. Between 1924 and 1929 Carline taught at the Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford. He had his first solo show at Goupil Gallery in 1931. The mid-1930s saw Carline involved in Negro art, organising a show at Adams Gallery in 1935, and contributing the main text to Arts of West Africa, edited by Michael Sadler. During World War II Carline supervised camouflage of factories and airfields. He was involved in AIA, helping to found the Hampstead Artists' Council in 1944. In 1946-47 he was appointed as the first Art Counsellor to UNESCO, and from 1955 to 1974 was chief examiner in art for the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. His books include Pictures in the Post: the Story of the Picture Postcard, 1959; Draw They Must, 1968; and Stanley Spencer at War, 1978. In 1975 the D'Offay Gallery held a Richard Carline exhibition for which the artist wrote the foreword. Carline died in Hampstead and in 1983 Camden Arts Centre organised a memorial exhibition. The Imperial War Museum holds his work, including the outstanding and pioneering series of paintings, from World War I, based on observations made from aeroplanes. Offered here is a lengthy ALS, 1970, written to the artist, Dr. Frederick Solomon (1899-1980) German Expressionist artist who died in New Hampshire USA. Solomon won the Mowbray Prize [1944] in London; was listed in WHO'S WHO IN ART [1954 London edition]. He studied art with such famous German artist's as: Max Liebermann, Martin Brandenburg, Eugene Spiro & Willy Jaeckel [Masterclass]. Exhibitions: Berlin, Cologne, Capetown, Haifa, London [Royal Academy], U.S., and in 1958 had one-man show at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba. In 1956 several of his paintings were exhibited at the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio. The letter shows that Carline and Solomon were longtime friends. Fine condition. 70. [FRANCE] Paul Barillon d'Amoncourt, the
marquis de Branges (1630–1691) was the
French ambassador to England from 1677 to 1688. His
dispatches from England to Louis XIV have been useful to
historians of the period, though an expected bias may be
present. With the conquest of England by William of
Orange, Louis XIV's most implacable enemy, Barillon was
expelled from England and war soon commenced between the
two kingdoms. Both Charles II and James II treated him
with great courtesy: one historian refers to his "
rather pampered existence at Whitehall". Both
appeared to confide in him, although it is not always
clear whether they were sincere. Charles II, at
the outbreak of the Popish Plot, did tell Barillon
frankly that Titus Oates, the inventor of the Plot, was
a villain, but that it would be unwise to say so
publicly. Barillon was often a conduit for pleas for
clemency, but these were not always well received; the
King simply brushed aside his plea for the life of
William, Lord Russell, and explained that while Oliver
Plunkett was an innocent man it was not expedient to
spare him. Charles's remark to Barillon that his brother
James' s public conversion to Roman Catholicism had
weakened him is important evidence that Charles
postponed his own conversion until he was dying. The
marriage of the future Queen Anne to George of Denmark,
brother of France's ally, was a triumph for French
diplomacy, and it was probably Barillon who originally
proposed the marriage, although he did not play a major
role in subsequent negotiations, which were mainly
conducted by Lord Sunderland; like most people,
Barilllon found the groom entirely unimpressive.
As a counterweight, he intrigued with the Whig leaders,
notably Algernon Sidney, whose posthumous reputation was
greatly damaged by the discovery that Barillon had paid
him regular bribes. The Popish Plot, with the wave of
anti-Catholic and anti-French hysteria it produced, was
in itself unwelcome to Barillon, but he used it for
short term advantage in helping to bring down the Earl
of Danby, the main exponent of a Protestant, pro-Dutch,
anti-Catholic policy, by assisting in the publication of
letters, which taken out of context, suggested secret
intrigues between Danby and the French Court. After the
failure of the Exclusion Bill, Barillon records the King
telling him in strict confidence that he had been
tempted to let it pass. Even Barillon, an astute
diplomat, admitted to finding Charles unfathomable: "his
conduct so secret and impenetrable that even the most
skillful observers are misled". Only once does he
seem to have been guilty of a serious diplomatic
blunder: late in 1679 an indiscreet letter of his,
reporting a conversation where Charles II claimed to
have personally blocked a Franco-Dutch treaty, was
leaked in the Netherlands. It caused an uproar, and
Charles was so angry with Barillon that he forbade him
the Court. Sunderland, who had probably leaked the
letter, remarked complacently that "I do not question M.
Barillon finds himself embarrassed, but when anybody
will play such tricks, it is but just that it should
come home to him at last." His disgrace was
temporary, but afterwards he was far more careful what
he committed to paper. At other times his relations with
Sunderland were amicable enough, although Sunderland
sometimes treated him to his famous outbursts of
rudeness, and on one occasion Barillon told him that he
would not report his remarks if he could not control
himself. When it was rumoured in 1685 that the French
had given tacit support to Monmouth's Rebellion,
Sunderland told Barillon pointedly that he hoped this
was a misunderstanding, or else the English would wonder
if Louis had 'other plans they could not discern'.
Later he mocked Louis' vaunted desire for European
peace, saying brutally that the peace would last until
it was in someone's interest to break it. His privileged
position was confirmed in the last days of Charles II's
reign, when, alone among the diplomatic corps, he was
allowed to send a secret message to Louis XIV that the
King was dying. In the events leading to Charles'
deathbed reception into the Roman Catholic Church, he
played a role of some importance. While the King's
brother James was already convinced of his brother's
wish to convert, it was Barillon, prompted by Louise de
Kéroualle, who urged James to act at once. Together they
visited the dying King, and Barillon witnessed Charles'
statement that he wished to be received " with all his
heart." James II's biographer describes him as an
astute diplomat, with an ability to convey information
through subtle hints, but personally unattractive:
heavy, gross and boorish. Approx. 23 handwritten

(1895-1961) An outstanding twentieth century
painter, printmaker and illustrator, Marcel Vertes moved from
his native Hungary to Paris during the First World War. Living
and working in the famous Latin Quarter, Vertes quickly
established himself as one of the most important artists of
the Paris scene, thus continuing in the footsteps of Boutet,
Forain, Toulouse-Lautrec and others. The art of Marcel Vertes
was at its peak during the vibrant and somewhat wild decade of
the 1920’s. Concentrating upon scenes of Paris street life,
portrayals of women and depictions of circus and cabaret acts,
Vertes left a legacy of original lithographs and drawings that
superbly capture the spirit of 1920’s Paris. He won two
Academy Awards (Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design)
for his work on the 1952 film Moulin Rouge. Vertes is
also responsible for the original murals in the Café Carlyle
in the Carlyle Hotel in New York City. Offered here is

149. Edward Sheffield Bartholomew (1822 - 1858) was a noted American sculptor active in Italy. Bartholomew was born in Colchester, Connecticut. After apprenticeships as a bookbinder and dentist, his first employment was as a dentist in Hartford, but he soon abandoned it for painting and (after learning that he was color-blind) sculpture. In 1844 he studied at the National Academy of Design's antique class in New York City, from 1845-1848 directed the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, contracting a severe case of smallpox circa 1847, then studied for another year in the National Academy of Design and sailed for Europe. 156. George
Wharton Pepper (1867-1961)
American lawyer, law professor, and Republican politician from
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He represented Pennsylvania in the
United States Senate and founded the law firm of Pepper
Hamilton. Pepper, born to upper-class parents of Pennsylvania
Dutch ancestry, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in
1887 and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1889.
He was admitted to the bar in 1889. From 1892 to 1895, he edited
and published the University of Pennsylvania Law Review (then
called the American Law Register and Review) with his friend,
William Draper Lewis. In the early 1900s, a court appointed
Pepper receiver for the Bay State Gas Company, a bankrupt
Massachusetts utility. Pepper then sued a number of
nationally-known businessmen, including William Rockefeller,
Henry H. Rogers, and Thomas W. Lawson, for enriching themselves
at the expense of the utility. During the public debate over the
expansion of advertising in the 1920s, Senator Pepper argued for
a "nationwide code of regulation," described in a 1929 speech to
the Outdoor Advertising Association of America . He pointed out
that in preserving natural beauty, no national economic benefit
was lost&emdash;-real estate values would increase without
the addition of billboards . Pepper voiced what was then the
general public fear: that if billboards became mainstream,
advertising would become too obtrusive. Pepper prevailed upon
President Calvin Coolidge's to name fellow Pennsylvanian Owen
Josephus Roberts special counsel to investigate the Teapot Dome
scandal of Warren G. Harding's administration. Pepper was
briefly the oldest living (former) senator. TLS, 1937, 1p, to

Earle believed might end the war in Europe early. The German
ambassador and the head of the German secret service secretly
proposed to Earle that German troops could surround Hitler's
headquarters and turn Hitler over to the Allies as a war
criminal. German troops then would be repositioned to defend

168. Anne Sophie Swetchine (1782-1857) known as Madame Swetchine, was a Russian mystic, and author, born in Moscow, and famous for her salon in Paris. She spent her early years at the court of empress Catherine II, as her father was one of the empress's closest advisors. In 1799, she married General Nicolas Sergeyvitch Swetchine. Under the influence of Joseph de Maistre, she became a member of the Roman Catholic Church in 1815; she had also been under the influence of the Jesuits. Because of the law, which disallowed Russian nobles who converted from the orthodox religion to live in Russia, she was forced to leave Russia, and she decided upon Paris as her new home. In the following year she settled in Paris with her spouse where, until her death, she maintained a famous salon. From 1826 onward, she held her salon at number 71 Rue Saint Dominique in Paris. Her salon was considered remarkable for its high courtesy and intellectuality. She often received Russian exiles at her salon. It was also a centre of the French contrarevolutionary movement. Frequent guests was people of France's literary, political and ecclesiastical communities. With her "fervent and enlightened Catholicism", which took the form of a rational and intellectualized form of faith, she is described as an influence on the French Catholic community until her death in 1856. realism in filming a last shot of the reformatory going up in

195. Captain William Easby (1791-1854) Shipbuilder and Early Washington Entrepreneur. One of the first indications of his presence is his signature is on the WNY mechanics letter to President Thomas Jefferson, commending Jefferson on his election 1805. As a young intelligent and energetic shipwright he advanced rapidly to become a Master Boat Builder. Like other early Yard employees, Easby served as a member of the District of Columbia militia, during the War of 1812 where he saw active service as a private with Commodore Barney's command in August 1814. Easby was with Barney's unit when they futility tried to stop a large number of veteran British regulars at Bladensburg Md. Following the American defeat, the British advanced on the Capitol and Navy Yard was set ablaze to prevent the British capturing stored naval supplies and gun powder. Following the conflagration, Easby like other civilian employees was out of work for a year. As a married man with two children to support, Easby returned to Philadelphia where his family lived and presumably found work till the following year when he was once again able to resume his duties at the Yard. In 1824 President James Monroe made Easby a Captain of Riflemen of the Second Legion, First Brigade, of the Militia of the District of Columbia. Easby was ever after known by the title thus awarded him. William Easby's name is listed in the 1827 Directory of the City of Washington, his occupation: master boat builder at navy yard and his residence: "down w Es btw 9 and 10e." On March 24, 1828, William Easby added his name to that of one thousand citizens of the District of Columbia petitioning the Congress to gradually abolish slavery in the District of Columbia and to ban the further importation and sale of slaves within the District. Many of those who signed the memorial were slave holders. Yard employees like Master Caulker Robert Armistead, Naval Constructor William Doughty, Clerk Thomas Howard and Master Shipwright Thomas Lyndall all leased their human property to WNY. Many of these men saw no contradiction in owing enslaved workers and favoring gradual compensated emancipation. Their support though was contingent however on the provision that all newly emancipated individuals of African descent, immediately immigrate to Africa. Easby's exact position on slavery and emancipation is not known, however Easby had business dealing with black freeman Michael Shiner in 1848 when he bought land from Shiner. His last will contains no reference to slaves nor is there any evidence that Easby ever owned slaves or used enslaved workers in his businesses or household. Shortly after Andrew Jackson's election Easby left federal employment and set up his shipbuilding firm. He built a successful shipbuilding operation and became a noted ship designer and builder. Among the vessels launched at Easby's Wharf was the Sailing Ship Russia. Easby later built a series of Coast Guard Revenue Cutters such as the Cutter Forward in 1842. Another project which occupied Easby was a lime kiln and his experiments to convert coal particles into solid lumps which would be furnace ready. Easby was granted a patent on the process on August 29, 1848. Easby was an early member of the Washington Monument Association which solicited funding and support to raise a memorial to the nation's first president. His continuing involvement with science is reflected in his position as Treasurer of the National Institute, a precursor of the Smithsonian Institute. Manuscript Document Signed, 1834, 1p, 7-3/4 x 9-3/4". In this document Easby sells for $650 to John Easby of Philadelphia certain described property (7 beds, chairs, tables, looking glasses, carpets, piano forte, gilt edge china, knives & other kitchen utensils, silver tea spoons, 400 books, 40 prints and paintings, etc). 223. [ART] Stepan Dmitrievich Erzia (Nefyodov) (1876 - 1959) was a Mordvin sculptor who lived in Russia and Argentina. Erzia chose his pseudonym after the native ethnic group, the Erzya Mordvins. Stepan became an apprentice of various icon-painting studios. In 1893-1897 he lived in Kazan, previously at the joiner's shop, later he worked at P. A. Kovalinski's icon-painting studio in Kazan. That time Erzia decorated churches in the various cities and villages of the Volga area and attended Kazan Art School. In 1902-1906 he studied at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. In 1906-1914 he lived in Italy and France. He took part in the exhibitions in Venice and Milan in 1909, in Paris in 1912. In 1914 he returned to Russia and in 1918 he moved to Yekaterinburg where he created his monumental works of art. In 1921 he moved to Novorossiysk, then to Batumi. Living there, he created portraits of Lenin, Marx and Engels, many cultural workers of Georgia. In 1923 he lived in Baku, where he created in monumental genre. In 1926 the Soviet government made a decision to send Stepan Erzia abroad "to spread the knowledge of the Soviet art". He came to Paris again and his one-man shows received positive response in the Western press. In 1927-1950 he worked in Buenos Aires, creating portraits there of Lenin, Moses, Tolstoy, and Beethoven. In 1950 he returned to the Soviet Union. In 1957 he was decorated with the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. Stepan Erzya died in 1959 in Moscow and was buried in Saransk, the capital of Mordovia. 224. [SPAIN] Juan Antonio Llorente (1756-1823) Spanish historian. He studied at the University of Zaragoza, and, having been ordained priest, became vicar-general to the bishop of Calahorra in 1782. In 1785, he became commissary of the Holy Office (Inquisition) at Logroño and, in 1789, its general secretary at Madrid. In the crisis of 1808, Llorente identified himself with the Bonaparte regime and was engaged for a few years in superintending the execution of the decree for the suppression of the monastic orders, in examining the archives of the Spanish Inquisition and in arguing for the submission of the Spanish church to the Bonaparte monarch. His 1810 project for a division of Spain in prefectures and subprefectures (under the French revolutionary inspiration) was never brought into practice because of the war. On the return of King Ferdinand VII to Spain in 1814, he retreated to France, where he published his great work, Histoire critique de l'Inquisition espagnole (Paris, 1817-1818). Translated into English, German, Dutch and Italian, it attracted much attention in Europe and involved its author in considerable persecution. After the coup of Rafael de Riego (1820), he supported the new Liberal government. The discovery of his Carbonarian activities and the publication of his Portraits politiques des papes in 1822 culminated in a peremptory order to leave France. Both the personal character and the literary accuracy of Llorente have been assailed, but, although he was not an exact historian, there is no doubt that he made an honest use of documents relating to the Inquisition which are no longer extant. 235. WILLIAM WHITTY HALL (1810-1876) physician and pioneer editor of health magazines, was born in Paris, Kentucky. After graduating from Centre College, Danville, Kentucky, with the intention of becoming a Presbyterian missionary, he studied theology and medicine at Transylvania University, where he received an M.D. in 1836, the same year he was ordained to the ministry. Intending to support himself as a missionary through his medical practice, he began work in Louisiana. But he subsequently came to Texas, met Sam Houston near Nacogdoches, and rode with him to the first presidential inauguration in Texas. Hall preached in Houston and the surrounding area and served as chaplain in both houses of the Texas Congress. He helped collect funds to build a Presbyterian church in Houston and was active in organizing an ecclesiastical vigilance committee to prevent imposters from posing as ministers. In 1837 Hall left the Republic in time to attend the Synod of Kentucky, which convened in October. There he urged the Presbvterian Church to become involved in missionary work in Texas. The General Assembly of the church adopted his recommendation in 1838. Hall gradually abandoned preaching for the practice of medicine and went first to New Orleans, then to Cincinnati, where he married Hannah Matlock. In 1851 he established a consultation practice in New York City, where he married Magdalene Matilda Robertson. While in Cincinnati, he had published several books on consumption and other lung ailments. In New York in 1854 he began the publication of Hall's Joumal of Health. In 1875 he started another periodical, Hall's Medical Adviser. [FRANCE] Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse (1681), duc de Penthièvre (1697), (1711), (1678-1737), a legitimated prince of the blood royal, was the son of Louis XIV and of his mistress Françoise-Athénaïs, marquise de Montespan. At the age of five, he became grand admiral of France. In 1693, he became a chevalier des Ordres du roi (Order of the King) and, in 1704, a knight of the Toison d’or. Shortly before his death in 1715, Louis XIV added a codicil to his will stating that if all legitimate members of the House of Bourbon, both those descended from Louis and more distant kinsmen, died out, the throne of France could be inherited by the duc du Maine and the comte de Toulouse. The decision was reversed after the death of Louis XIV when Louis Alexandre's cousin, Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, as the new regent, had the Parlement de Paris void that portion of the will. 268. [MAINE] Ralph Owen Brewster (1888 - 1961) was an American politician from Maine. Brewster, a Republican, was solidly conservative, a close confidant of Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin and antagonist of Howard Hughes. Brewster came to national attention due to his opposition to the commercial interests of Howard Hughes , America's wealthiest man at the time. Brewster was chairman of a special Senate committee investigating defense procurement during World War II. He claimed concern that Hughes had received $40 million from the Defense Department without actually delivering the aircraft he had contracted to provide, but Brewster may have had an ulterior motive. Incidentally, Hughes stated that the H-4 Hercules cost far more, with the balance coming from his own funds. Hughes aggressively combated the inquirer, alleging corruption. Memoirs by Hughes right-hand man Noah Dietrich and syndicated newspaper columnist Jack Anderson each sketched Brewster as, in Dietrich's words, "an errand boy for Juan Trippe and Pan American World Airways," who pushed for legislation that would give Pan Am the single-carrier international air monopoly for the U.S. The Martin Scorsese movie The Aviator portrays Brewster (played by Alan Alda) similarly, as corrupt and in the pocket of Pan Am, the rival of Hughes' TWA . Hughes spread rumors about Brewster's close association with Pan Am, alleging that he received free flights and hospitality in return for legislation such as his bill to withdraw government approval for TWA flights across the Atlantic. CORRELL. Amos n' Andy, originally titled Sam n'
Henry, debuted on Chicago's WGN on January 12, 1926. The
show switched over to WMAQ on March 19, 1928. Although the
title characters were played by white men, the storyline
was about two Atlanta Black men who came to Chicago to
find their fortunes. They were members of the Mystic
Knights of the Sea Lodge instead of the Jewels of the
Crown. Everything else remained the same. Amos n' Andy
premiered on the NBC radio network on Thursday night,
August 19, 1929 at 11:00 P.M. EST. The show was broadcast
an unprecedented six days a week. It was so popular that
it was moved to 7:00 P.M. EST to reach a broader audience.
There were protests on the west coast because it would be
aired there at 4 P.M. so, for the first time in radio
history, NBC did a repeat broadcast for its west coast
affiliates. Amos n' Andy hit its peak of popularity in the
1930s, but the show remained on radio until 1958. Lightly
soiled at margins. Mounting remnants and copyright stamp
on verso (no show through). Overall, very good condition.
We have done a great deal of research on this photo,
trying to determine who actually signed, one of
both. We can say that the handwriting on this photo
matches those of the same period, whether on photos or
album pages. Since no one ever said otherwise, it is
assumed that Gosden signed Amos and Charles signed

Charles Townshend, Second Viscount, (born 1674, died 1738) a statesman of unsulliintegrity, was the eldest son of Horatio, the first Viscount. He succeeded to the Peerage in December 1687, being educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. When he took his seat in the House of Lords his sympathies leant to Toryism, but this predilection soon faded away, and in February 1701 it was rumoured among the courtiers that he would hold office of Privy Soal in the Whig Ministry which William the Third had in view. For some years after the accession of Queen Anne he remained without office, but on September 29th 1707 he was created Yeomen of the Guard, and in the same year he was summoned to the Privy Council, a distinction renewed by the queen's two successors to the throne. The command og the Yeomen remained in his hands until June 13th 1711, but its responsibilities did not prevent him from acting as joint plent- potentiary with the Duke of Marlborough in the peace negotiations with France which were carried on at Gertruydenburg, near Breda, o from serving as ambassador extraordinary at the Hague Congress (May 2, 1709 to March 26, 1711). Townshend was in high favour of George the First and on that king's arrival at the Hague in September 1714 he published the appointment of Charles as Secretary of State for the Southern Department, entrusting to his new minister the privilege of nominating his own colleague: Horace Walpole (??? Robert Walpole ), his brother-in-law and private secretary recommended Stanhope for the vacant post, and Stanhope was duly appointed. Townshend did not neglect to avail himself of the advantages afforded by his attendance on the king, and before he arrival of George the First in England he had obtained complete ascendency both over his mind and the dispositions of the advisors by whom his line of conduct was usually determined. The policy of the new ministers, both at home and abroad, lay in the promotion of peace. With this object they endeavoured to limit the charges against their predecessor Harley, Lord Oxford, to high crimes and misdemeanours. To gain this and they brought about, in 1716, an alliance between those ancient rivals in arms, France and England. In spite of their success their influence was gradually undermined by the intrigues of Lord Sunderland and by the discontent of the Hanoverian favourites, who deemed the pensions and the places which they had gained as insufficient reward for their exertions. In October, 1716 Stanhope accompanied the King on a journey to Hanover, and during this visit was seduced from his allegiance to his colleague by the wily Sunderland, who had ingratiated himself into royal favour. George the First was induced into believing that Townshend and Walpole were caballing with the prince of Wales, and were forming designs against the royal authority. Townshend was dismissed in December 1716 from his place of Secretary of State, and was afforded in lieu thereof the splendid banishment of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a gilded sinecure which he at first contemptuously declined, but finally condescended ultimately to accept on condition that he was not required to set foot on Irish soil. His latent spirit of hostility to this arrangement quickly developed into open antagonism, and in March 1717 he was dismissed from this position. At the close of May 1720, a partial reconciliation took place between the opposing Whig sections of Stanhope and Townshend. The Latter was readmitted into the Ministry as Lord President of the Council on 11th June 1720, and his devoted colleague, Sir Robert Walpole, became Paymaster General. When the South Sea Bubble burst, the fortunes of the Ministry shared in the misfortunes of the scheme which they had promoted. Stanhope, in a paroxysm of passion during a heated debate broke a blood vessel, and Sunderland, although acquitted of the charge of personal corruption, was forced to retire into private life. The withdrawal of these statesmen assigned to their rivals the chief positions in the state. Townshend became Secretary of State on the 10th February 1721, and Walpole gained the position of First Lord of the Treasury and Chancellor of the Exchequer. The death of George the First threatened a change of advisors, but the dismay of the new king's favourite, Spencer Compton, at being called upon to draw up the royal speech led to the old ministers of the Crown being retained in their places. What the attack on the opposition could not affect, the internal strife of the administration accomplished. Townshend was of a proud, impetuous nature, born more accustomed to rule than obey. His family had for many generations stood higher in the social life of Norfolk than Walpole's progenitors, and when he himself attained the distinction in politics his position as a member of the Upper House was greater than that enjoyed by his friend in the Commons. As the power of the Lower House increased, and as Walpole became more and more the object of attacks by the Tories, the pre-eminence of Townshend passed from him. So long, to use the witty remark of Sir Robert Walpole, as the firm of Townshend and Walpole was such, things went well with them, [Lady Dorothy Walpole 1686-1726] but when the positions were reversed jealousies arose between the partners. The growing alienation was hastened by the death in 1725 of the Secretary's wife, Walpole's sister. At the close of 1729 Townshend endeavoured to obtain the appointment of his old and attached friend, Lord Chesterfield, as his fellow secretary of state, and the failure of the attempt brought about a fierce scene between himself and Walpole. They broke into passionate words, seized one another by the coat collars, and would have come to blows had their friends not intervened. After the outbreak of passion further co-operation was impossible and Townshend had the good sense to recognise the position. He retired tp private life on 15th May 1730. The Chief domestic events of Townshend's ministry were the impeachment of Bishop Atterbury; the partial restoration of Lord Bolingbroke; and the troubles in Ireland over the granting to a man named Wood of a patent for coining pence. Its concluding act was the signing of the Treaty of Seville on November 9th 1729. Charles Townshend died of apoplexy on 21st June 1738, aged 64. Slow in forming, but resolute in adhering to, his opinion, and like so many many men of that stamp, he was impatient of contradiction. His manners have been styled "course, rustic, and seemingly brutal" but these defects were not visible in his domestic life. Never did minister leave office with cleaner hands. He did not add one acre to his estate, nor leave large fortunes to his younger children.............80-120
