52. The Right Reverend William Croswell Doane (1832-1913) was the 1st Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany in the United States. He was bishop from 1869 until his death in 1913. Doane served about 60 years in ordained ministry, a huge span for those times. As bishop, he managed the construction of the Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, the first Episcopal cathedral built for that purpose in the United States. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Doane is probably best known today for his Anglican hymn, "Ancient of Days".  As a student at Burlington College in New Jersey, he was one of three founding members of the "Delta" chapter of the college fraternity of Delta Psi (ΔΨ)), later known as St. Anthony Hall after the chapter transferred to the nearby University of Pennsylvania.  ALA, 1888, 1p, to William Rawle. 73. [THEATRE] HELEN BLYTHE  - American actress.  Dramatic instinct was precociously developed. At the age of five she was introduced to the public in children's roles by Clara Morris at Norwalk, Ohio, and six years later made her appearance in  Richard III.   She was born at Fairfield, Ohio, 1861, and had made quite a reputation when she secured her first regular engagement at the Cincinnati Grand Opera House. Her real name is Blye, but an early mistake in the play bills to Blythe was never changed. She made steady headway, and became a great favorite in all the principal cities of the United States and Canada. Her dramatic methods are of the newer school, and her real strength lies in those more human impersonations which the genius of the modern playwright and the favor of the public have given a prominent position on our stage. 78. [ART] Richard Black   (b. 1932)  highly regarded American printmaker who has made a significant contribution over the years to the arts in Iowa. For thirty years he was a professor of art at Drake University where he founded the Drake University Biennial Print Symposium. The symposium brought nationally known artists to the state to demonstrate and lecture on the art of printmaking. Black himself has been the subject of a one-person exhibition at the Des Moines Art Center and has been honored with the DRAKE AWARD for excellence in teaching and artistic achievement. Black's works are included in many museum collections and have been shown in invitational and competitive exhibitions all over the country.  As a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Black participates in a show every fall in London. Uncle of Abraham Lincoln

82.  Kentucky Pioneer document dated 1805, summons for Williamson Bruce to appear before the Judges of Hardin County [Elizabethtown] Kentucky. They are to answer William Bush plaintiff.  William Bush, brother of Sarah who was Abraham Lincoln's step-mother, therefore William Bush was Abe's uncle by marriage. This document was written and signed by the noted Kentucky pioneer, Ben Helm. Also signed by William Bush on the verso. BEN HELM (b. Fairfax county, Va., May 8, 1767; son of Capt. Thomas Helm, apioneer settler of Kentucky, who moved from Virginia to the Falls of Ohio, in the fall of 1779. In 1801-03 Ben Helm erected the first brick house built there. He became a surveyor; was state senator, 1796-1800; clerk of the Hardin county courts, 1800-17; an officer with the rank of major in the war of 1812; filled various other offices of honor and trust in Kentucky: purchased the farm owned by Christopher Bush, father of Mrs. Sarah (Bush) Johnston Lincoln, step-mother of Abraham Lincoln, and was a partner in a general store with Duff Green [later, American statesman], conducting the business as Green & Helm. He died in Elizabethtown, 1858, nearly 91 years old.Apparently William Bush was somewhat of a troublemaker in the E-town area. He was born in 1763, and in 1828 he acquired the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had lived, before they left for Indiana. His sister, Sarah, became the step-mother of the future U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln. See the article THAT ROGUE, WILLIAM BUSH, by Blaine V. Houmes, the Iowa physician and collector of Lincolniana. This article appears in The MANUSCRIPT, Summer 2002. William Bush acquired land like his parents, and by 1817 had married and built an attractive brick house [Elizabethtown area], a sign of sure success. He served on jury duty with Thomas Lincoln, after of Abraham and acquired the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had lived, before they left for Indiana∞, and later Illinois. Although prosperous, he was frequently entangled in lawsuits. His reputation was guarded and he did not enjoy the respect of other members of the Bush family. Little is known of Lincoln's relationship with the Bush family. Lincoln claimed that his family's removal (to Indiana) was partly on account of slavery, but chiefly on account of the difficulty in land titles in Kentucky. Thomas Lincoln was known to be anti-slavery, and as a young boy Abraham probably observed slaves being taken in chains to Southern markets, on the road beside his home. Carl Sandburg and other historians have not dwelt on the cantankerous nature of the President's uncle by marriage, let alone the fact that there was a slave-trader in the family. 83. [ART] John Frederick Lewis  RA (1804-1876) important  English painter. He specialized in Oriental and Mediterranean scenes and often worked in exquisitely detailed watercolour.  Lewis lived in Spain between 1832 and 1834. He lived in Cairo between 1841 and 1850, where he made numerous sketches that he turned into paintings even after his return to England in 1851. He lived in Walton-on-Thames until his death.  Lewis became an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1859 and a member (an RA) in 1865.   After being largely forgotten for decades, he became extremely fashionable, and expensive, from the 1970s and good works now fetch prices into the millions of dollars or pounds at auction.  ALS, Edinburgh, 1853, 4 pages,  4-1/2 x 7 in.  Last page shows tape remains along right edge o/w very fine.   An excellent content letter about an early painting that he did before the age of 18; it was exhibited "at the British Institution....".  Says he saw it many years ago but doesn't know what happened to it.  He would be curious to see it now and would like to purchase oit "...simply as a memento of past days..."   The title of the painting is mentioned on page one, looks something like "Deers ........?".  An interesting example of this noted artist..........300-400

104. [THEATRE] Francesco Dall'Ongaro [1808-1873] Italian writer, poet and dramatist. He was educated for the priesthood, but abandoned his orders, and taking to political journalism founded the Favilla at Trieste in the Liberal interest. In 1848 he enlisted under Garibaldi, and next year was a member of the assembly which proclaimed the republic in Rome. On the downfall of the republic he fled to Switzerland, then to Belgium and later to France, taking a prominent part in revolutionary journalism; it was not till 1860 that he returned to Italy, where he was appointed professor of dramatic literature at Florence. Subsequently he was transferred to Naples, where he died on the in 1873. His patriotic poems, Stornelli, composed in early life, had a great popular success; and he produced a number of plays, notably Fornaretto, Bianca Cappello, Fasma and Il Tesoro. His collected Fantasie drammatiche e liriche were published in his lifetime. Rare ALS, no year, 2pp, 5-1/4 x 8". Not translated. Fine condition...........75-100

After designing two key projects as a young architect, Les Halles in the centre of Paris and the building of the Préfecture in Cergy-Pontoise, he became one of the most sought-after architects in France, with major projects in Montpellier, Strasbourg and Saint-Nazaire. 107. [FRANCE] Pauline Marie Armande Craven née de La Ferronnays (1808-1891) French author. Mrs. Craven's family life was depicted in the Le Récit d'une Soeur as especially tender and intimate. She suffered several severe bereavements in the years following her marriage. The Cravens lived abroad until 1851. In the same year Keppel Richard Craven died. His son's diplomatic career appeared unsuccessful. He stood unsuccessfully for election to Parliament for Dublin in 1852 after which he retired to private life. The family went to live in Naples in 1853. Mrs. Craven then began to write the history of the family life of the la Ferronays between 1830 and 1836. Its focus was the love story of her brother Albert and his wife Alexandrine. This book, the Le Récit d'une Soeur (1866, Eng. trans. 1868), was enthusiastically received and was awarded a prize by the French Academy. Strained circumstances made it vital that Mrs. Craven earn money by writing. Anne Sivrin appeared in 1868, Fleurange in 1871, Le Mot d'énigme in 1874, Le Valbriant (Eng. trans., Lucia) in 1886. Among her miscellaneous works are La Sceur Natalie Narischkin (1876), Deux Incidents de la question catholique en Angleterre (1875), Lady Georgiana Fullerton, sa vie et ses ceuvres (1888). Mrs Cravens charming personality won her many friends. She was a frequent guest of Lord Palmerston, Lord Ellesmere and Lord Granville. Before his death in 1884, her husband translated her correspondence with Lord Palmerston and her correspondence with the Prince Consort into French. She died in Paris on April 1, 1891. Duval is remembered for research involving placental development in mice and rats, and was the first to identify trophoblast invasion in rodents. With Austrian-American gynecologist Walter Schiller (1887-1960), Schiller Duval bodies are named, which are structures found in endodermal sinus tumors. ALS, 1889, 1p, about 5 x 8". In 1882, she published La Vie Moderne, in the Journal of Black Cat and The Independent Magazine literary pages and his own poems.  It becomes the only active member of the literary circles of woman Hydropathes, the Zutistes , the "Hirsutes" and "Jemenfoutistes" who meet at Cabaret Chat Noir.  She accompanies on piano songs and poems that are declaims.  She participates in the evenings Goguette Black Cat . In 1890, she published, Lemerre his first volume of picturesque Rimes then, in 1892, Love walks, a collection of prose tales.  In 1894, she published a second volume of rhymes, Joys wandering, and in 1896, a novel, Folle his body at Harvard. Follow another novel, Juliette Cordelin, another collection of poems, Guitars distant Calendes sentimental (prose) and the force of desire (novel).  She will also publish numerous articles on literature, art, music and literary criticism.  Married to painter Georges Bellenger (1847-1918), best known for his lithographs - he was one of the most prolific illustrators Editions Flammarion and Marpon - October 1, 1885, she made ​​several trips to the United States .  Manuscript poem signed, 2pp, 7-1/4 x 10-3/4".  Extremely rare!. [RELIGION]  Pierre Simon de Dreux-Breze  (1811-1893) Priest since 1825 , Vicar General and Canon Emeritus of Paris,  he distinguished himself as a preacher,  and was appointed Bishop of Moulins  October 28, 1849, by the President of the Republic   Called to Rome by Pope Pius IX on 7 January 1850,  it was dedicated to Our Lady of Paris on 14 April and took possession of his see on 1 May.
Near Dom Prosper Gueranger, he established the Roman rite in his diocese a pastoral letter by the 21 November 1853 and was a promoter of the Gregorian chant.  [internet translation].   ALS, not dated, 3 full pages, 5-1/4 x 8-1/4".  On the verso of page 3 is an ALS by Xavier de Ravignan  (1795-1858) French Jesuit preacher and author. Educated in Paris, he resigned his army commission to study law. Auditor of the royal court. Deputy attorney-general by 1821. Entering a Sulpician monastery, and later joining the Society of Jesus, he was ordained in 1828, and after several years as professor and retreat preacher at Montrouge, he went to Notre Dame, where his logic, serenity, and zeal won souls by the hundreds. Superior of his brethren at Bordeaux from 1837 to 1842, and at Paris from 1848 to 1851. He preached throughout France and in Rome, Belgium, and London. His calm, eloquent De l'Existence et de l'Institut des Jesuites of 1844, vindicating the Society, sold 25,000 copies in one year. However, the Jesuits' strife continued until they were forced to disband for a time in France.  Despite painful controversy with his superiors and imputations from other quarters, he remained loyal to his order. In 1854 he brought out Clement XIII et Clement XIV, a dispassionate treatise, of no great literary merit, on the defender and the suppressor of the Jesuits. He steadfastly refused preferment, even the archbishopric of Paris, devoting himself to other works. He died a saintly death, and thousands followed the remains of the "Apostle of Paris" to his grave. VG..........200-300

123. [FRANCE] Jules-Martin Cambon (1845-1935) French diplomat.  He began his career as a lawyer in (1866), served in the Franco-Prussian War and entered the civil service in 1871. He was prefect of the départment of Nord (1882) and of the Rhône (1887–1891), and in 1891 became governor-general of Algeria, where he had served in a minor position in 1874.  He was nominated French ambassador at Washington D.C. in 1897, and in that capacity negotiated the preliminaries of peace on behalf of the Spanish government after the war with the United States. He was serving as the French ambassador to the United States during the War of 1898.He was an active participant in the peace negotiations between Spain and United States and a contributor to the final agreement, the Treaty of Paris of 1898. His role in those negotiations helped Spain and France to develop a strong political partnership.  He was transferred in 1902 to Madrid, and in 1907 to Berlin, where he served as French ambassador to Germany until the outbreak of World War I in 1914, and then as the head of the political section of the French foreign ministry during the war.  ALS, 1929, 2pp, 5-1/4 x 7".  Picture of him is not included here.  VG............100-150

He was nominated three times for Academy Awards (Ace in the Hole, Cat Ballou, and Bloodbrothers), but he may be best known for a work that never made it to the screen: his unproduced original script Harrow Alley.  Newman's radio writing included scripts for Escape, Suspense, and The Halls of Ivy as well as the first broadcast episode of Gunsmoke. He is not officially credited for his screenplays for The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape, having renounced credit after sharp disagreements with the director, John Sturges in both cases, over changes made during shooting. A Norwegian native, he later became a U.S. citizen, and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. His service in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II made use of his Arctic exploration expertise to help the Allies over Scandinavia and Northern Europe. 147. James Steranko (b.1938) American graphic artist, comic book writer-artist-historian, publisher and film production illustrator. His most famous comic-book work was with the 1960s superspy feature "Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." in Marvel Comics' Strange Tales and in the subsequent eponymous series. Steranko earned lasting acclaim for his innovations in sequential art during the Silver Age of comic books, particularly his infusion of surrealism, op art, and graphic design into the medium. His work has been published in many countries and his influence on the field has remained strong since his comics heyday. He was inducted into the Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2006. For the movie industry, Steranko has produced a number of posters for various films, and was a conceptual artist on Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), doing production designs for the film and designing the character of Indiana Jones. He also served in a similar capacity as project conceptualist on Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) and wrote the episode "The Ties That Bind" of the DC Comics animated TV series Justice League Unlimited. He has "amassed an enormous portfolio of more than sixty projects (which he called the "Theater of Concepts") designed to be seen in multimedia form, drew the comic-book adaptation of the 1981 film Outland, which was serialized in Heavy Metal magazine. The lighthearted spy movie If Looks Could Kill (1991) features Roger Rees as the villain, Augustus Steranko, and director Brad Bird has stated that Steranko's work was his main comic-book influence on Pixar's The Incredibles. ALS, or ANS, SIGNED "JS". 149.  Harold Giles Hoffman (1896-1954) was an American politician, a Republican who served as the 41st Governor of New Jersey, from 1935 to 1938.  He also served two terms representing New Jersey's 3rd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives, from 1927 to 1931. He is probably best known for being one of the most provably corrupt governors of that state. As governor, Hoffman secretly visited convicted Lindbergh kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann in his death row cell on the evening of October 16, 1935 with Anna Bading, a stenographer and fluent speaker of German. Hoffman urged the other members of the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals , then the state's highest court, to visit Hauptmann. Despite Governor Hoffman's doubt regarding Hauptmann's guilt, Hoffman was unable to convince the other members of the court to re-examine the case, and Hauptmann was executed on April 3, 1936. 152. [FRANCE] Jean-Barthélémy Hauréau (1812-1896) French historian and writer. Born in Paris, he was educated at the Louis-le-Grand and Bourbon colleges in his native city, and won high honours at his public examination. After graduating he became a journalist, and soon was a contributor to several democratic papers: La Tribune, Le National, Le Droit, and La Revue du Nord; at Le National, he was praised by Théophile Gautier as the "tribune" of romanticism. At the age of twenty he published a series of apologetic studies on the Montagnards &emdash; in later years, regretting his youthful enthusiasm, he attempted to destroy the studies. In 1838 he took the chief editorship of the Courrier de la Sarthe and was appointed librarian of the city of Le Mans , which position he retained until 1845, when he was dismissed on account of comments of his on the daring speech of the Mayor of le Mans to the Duke of Nemours. He returned to Paris and once more became one of the editors of Le National. At this time he seemed destined for a political career, and after the revolution of February 24, 1848 was elected to the National Assembly; but close contact with revolutionary men and ideas cooled his old ardour. Throughout his life he opposed innovation, not only in politics and religion, but also in literature. After the coup d'état he resigned his position as director of the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque Nationale , to which he had been appointed in 1848, and refused to accept an administrative post until after the fall of the empire. Having acted as director of the national printing press from 1870 to 1881, he retired, but in 1893 accepted the post of director of the Fondation Thiers. He was also a member of the council of improvement of the École des Chartes. From the time of his appointment to the Bibliothèque Nationale up to the last days of his life he was engaged in making abstracts of all the medieval Latin writings (many anonymous or of doubtful attribution) relating to philosophy, theology, grammar, Canon law, and poetry, carefully noting on cards the first words of each passage. After his death this index of incipits , arranged alphabetically, was presented to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, and a copy was placed in the manuscript department of the Bibliothèque Nationale. 153. [FRANCE] Hugh Robert-Jean-Charles de La Tour d'Auvergne-Lauraguais (1768-1851) French  cardinal.   He was ordained June 24, 1792 at the age of 23 years. Became vicar 'of Amiens, he was appointed Bishop of Arras  in April 29, 1802. Pope Gregory XVI created the cardinal at the consistory of 23 December 1839.  In 1840, he declined his appointment as Archbishop of Paris.  On 16 April 1846 he was appointed cardinal-priest of St. Agnes Outside the Walls . However, the death of Pope Gregory XVI he fails to reach Rome in time and can not take part in the conclave of 1846.  Letter Signed, do not see year, 1p, approx. 6-3/4 x 8-1/2".  Identified as "To Monseigneur about invitation after "la Ceremonie du Sacre" (most likely Napoleon I). 154. [FRANCE] Pierre-Antoine Lebrun (1785-1873)  French poet.   Lebrun was born in Paris. An Ode à la grande armée, mistaken at the time for the work of Écouchard Lebrun, attracted Napoleon's attention, and secured for the author a pension of 1200 francs. Lebrun's plays, once famous, are now forgotten. They are: Ulysse (1814), Marie Stuart (1820), which obtained a great success, and Le Cid d'Andalousie (1825).  Lebrun visited Greece in 1820, and on his return to Paris he published in 1822 an ode on the death of Napoleon, which cost him his pension. In 1825 he was the guest of Sir Walter Scott at Abbotsford. The coronation of Charles X in that year inspired the verses entitled La Vallée de Champrosay, which have, perhaps, done more to secure his fame than his more ambitious attempts.  In 1828 appeared his most important poem, Le Voyage en Grèce, and in the same year he was elected to the Academy. The revolution of 1830 opened up for him a public career; in 1831 he was made director of the Imprimerie Royale, and subsequently filled with distinction other public offices, becoming senator in 1853.  ALS, Paris, 1832, 2pp, approx. 5 x 7.5". 164.  (AMERICAN LITERATURE LOT)    Thomas Louis Berger (1924-) novelist. Probably best known for his picaresque novel Little Big Man and the subsequent film by Arthur Penn.  TLS, 2001.  Lucius Manlius Sargent (1786-1867) author, antiquarian, and temperance advocate.  At the Boston peace celebration on February 22, 1815 (following the War of 1812), an ode of his, "Wreaths for the Chieftain," was sung. He wrote constantly for the newspapers and became well known for his literary interests. He found a popular subject in temperance reform. From 1830 till the approach of the Civil War he spoke and wrote on this theme so frequently and vigorously that he became one of the most uncompromising and conspicuous leaders in the crusade against liquor. He wrote Three Temperance Tales (2 vols., 1848), twenty-one stories of a tract-like nature bearing such titles as "My Mother's Gold Ring", "I Am Afraid There Is A God", "Groggy Harbor", and "An Irish Heart", first published in separate issues between 1833 and 1843. 191. [ART] Henry William (H.W.) Burgess was a landscape painter based in London. He came from the Burgess family of British artists, the son of portraitist William (d. 1812) and grandson of Thomas (fl. 1766-1786), and his own son John-Bagnold (1830-1897) also became a painter. Between 1809 and 1844, Burgess exhibited a large number of works at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, Suffolk Street and the New Water-Colour Society in London. He also served as landscape painter to William IV beginning in 1826. Offered here is an original lithograph titled "Thorn Trees, in Bushy Park, Middlesex", image approx. 15.5 x 11" plus margins. This lithograph was published by the firm of Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850), the famous English draftsman, lithographer and printer. He worked mainly in London, although he had trained in Paris as a painter and travelled extensively in Europe making topographical drawings. In 1817, on a visit to Munich, he was introduced to lithography by the pioneering lithographer Alois Senefelder. The following year he produced Twenty-four Views of Italy, a set of images he had drawn and lithographed. Dissatisfied with the way his work had been printed, Hullmandel set up his own lithographic press. The quality of work he published by himself and other artists such as Giovanni Belzoni helped popularize the topographical lithograph among British artists. Wilmeth (1870-1959) was an official in the United States Department of the Treasury who was Director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing from 1917 to 1922.  In 1917, Wilmeth became Director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.  He was also mayor of Takoma Park, Maryland from 1920 to 1923.  In 1922, in a surprise move, President Warren G. Harding issued an executive order dismissing Wilmeth and 28 other top officials in the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.  They were suspected of improper duplication of bonds.  Wilmeth was later completely exonerated of all charges, and in 1924, he was offered the opportunity to return to the post of Director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing but Wilmeth refused.  Signed bank check, dated 1913. Blume, born in Smarhon, Russia (present-day Belarus], in a Jewish family, emigrated with his family to New York City in in 1912; the family settled in Brooklyn. He studied art at the Educational Alliance, the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and the Art Students League of New York, establishing his own studio by 1926. He trained with Raphael Soyer and Isaac Soyer, exhibited with Charles Daniel, and was patronized by the Rockefeller family. An admirer of Renaissance technique, Blume worked by drawing and making compositional cartoons before putting his work on canvas. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1932 and spent a year in Italy. His first major recognition came in 1934 with a first prize for South of Scranton at a Carnegie Institute International Exhibition. The painting was inspired by a trip across Pennsylvania in an old car that required frequent repair. Eternal City [1934-1937] was politically charged, portraying Benito Mussolini as a jack-in-the-box emerging from the Coliseum; as a one-man, one-painting exhibition, it excited considerable attention from critics and audiences. 236. Ivy Litvinov [1889-1977] English writer, wife of Soviet Foreign Affairs minister. Ivy Lowe, born in London in 1889 of the unlikely union of a Jewish intellectual and the daughter of an Indian army colonel, grew up to be a writer and a rebel. The man she met in 1914 and married two years later was the Bolshevik revolutionary, Maksim Litvinov (born Meyer Genokh Wallakh to Orthodox Jewish parents). He became one of the most important figures in the Soviet Union and was ultimately Stalin's Minister of Foreign Affairs and ambassador to Washington. Ivy spent most of her long life in Moscow. She never took to being the Commissar's wife, but devoted herself to literature. Her writing is almost without exception a heightened autobiography, the collection of short stories depicting her daily life and observations. The fact that she survived under Stalin is remarkable, although there was an unexplained year when she was virtually in exile in the Urals, separated from her husband and two children. The happiest time of her life was when Maxim was the ambassador to the United States, and she and America fell in love with one another. Her dynamic, bohemian personality entranced Americans and she was fêted by artists, film stars, writers and statesmen alike. It is perhaps appropriate that many of her stories were first published in the New Yorker. They were collected in 1971 under the title She Knew She Was Right. "She also translated into English her husband's speeches and party tracts and later such Russian classics as Pushkin, Turgenev, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, and Chekhov." "Her final years were spent adding to a disorderly pile of unpublished manuscripts, but never producing the volume of memoirs about high life in the Kremlin that was expected of her. 243. [FILM] Lucien Hubbard (1888-1971)  film producer and screenwriter. He is best known for producing Wings, for which he received the first Academy Award for Best Picture. Lucien produced and or wrote ninety-two films over the course of his career. He lived in the same house in Beverly Hills until the day he died; he was an avid polo player and would frequently ride out of the stables located, in those days, at the rear of his Hillcrest Road property, to Will Rogers' house in the Palisades; he also occasionally rode his horse to Paramount Studios where he had been elevated to president shortly after the Academy Award winning Wings which he produced, was released. This film helped director William A. Wellman's rise into major studio films.  Before coming to Los Angeles, he was night editor of The New York Times. He had written five screenplays on the side and decided one day to travel to Hollywood to see if he could sell any of them; he sold three and in 1923, his career was launched. A film he loved was entitled The Vanishing American and it was the first film to portray the Indian in a favorable light; he received an award from the Cherokee nation for this film. He discovered and mentored many talents over the life of his career and was known as a very generous man with a sharp eye for good writers.   TLS, on Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer letterhead, 1935, to John C. 250. [SPACE] CLYDE TOMBAUGH (1906-1997) American Astronomer. He was the final discoverer of planet PLUTO after many years of research. When he was 22 he had a home-made 9 inch reflector that he used to makde drawings of Saturn and Jupiter from. After sending his pictures to Lowell Observatory for critique, he was immediately offered a position as astronomical photographer. Later, his research gained him another position as researcher, and his goal was to find the infamous Planet X, which would later be Pluto. Finally, on March 12, 1930, Pluto was discovered. Afterwards, he continued to discover a comet, five open clusters, globular cluster, and a supercluster of galaxes stretching from Andromeda to Perseus - ANS dtd 3/23/1994 regretting he has no photographs...........50-75

Ickes was responsible for implementing much of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "New Deal" and is the father of Harold M. Ickes. 258. George Opdyke (1805 - 1880) was an entrepreneur and the Mayor of New York (1862 to 1863) during the American Civil War. He joined the Republican Party and its anti-slavery platform. He was a delegate to the Buffalo Free Soil Party convention in 1848, and served on its committee on resolutions. He was a candidate for U.S. Congress on the Free Soil ticket in New Jersey.  He was a member of the New York State Assembly (New York Co., 14th D.) in 1859, and was a delegate to the 1860 Republican National Convention where he played a role in the nomination of Abraham Lincoln.  As mayor, Opdyke recruited and equipped troops for the war and responded to draft riots. Her film career began in 1933 and the following year she introduced the melody of the song "Blue Moon" for the Clark Gable movie Manhattan Melodrama, only with different lyrics. Ross first achieved prominence appearing opposite Bing Crosby in the 1937 film Waikiki Wedding, in which she and Crosby sang "Blue Hawaii". In The Big Broadcast of 1938 she sang "Thanks for the Memory" with Bob Hope. She again teamed with Hope the following year to sing "Two Sleepy People" in the 1938 film Thanks for the Memory. Ross also introduced "The Lady's in Love with You" in the 1939 film Some Like It Hot featuring Bob Hope, which is not the 1959 comedy starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis, although both films share the same name. Her sole Broadway appearance was in the Rodgers and Hart musical Higher and Higher in 1940. Ross recorded four songs from the show including "It Never Entered My Mind". 277. Clarence Cook (1828-1900) American author and art critic. Between 1863 and 1869, Cook wrote a series of articles about American art for The New York Tribune. In 1869, he moved to France and was the Parisian correspondent for The New York Tribune until the onset of the Franco-Prussian War. Cook was known for his expertise in archeology and antiquities and was instrumental in the criticism of the collection of General di Cesnola. In the mid-1850s Cook began to read works by John Ruskin and associated with a group of American artists, writers, and architects who followed Ruskin's thinking. Through this group he became aware of the British Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In 1863, with Clarence King and John William Hill he helped to found the Society for the Advancement of Truth in Art, an American group, similar to the Pre-Raphaelites, who published a journal called The New Path. In 1877, articles on home furnishings that Cook had written for Scribner's Monthly were published as a book entitled The House Beautiful. 292. [THEATRE} Madge Kennedy [1891-1987] silent film and stage actress. Kennedy first started out on Broadway with the show, Little Miss Brown. This was a farce in three acts presented at the 48th Street Theater in August 1912. Critics found Kennedy's performance most pleasing, writing, "Miss Kennedy's youth, good looks, and marked sense of fun helped her to make a decidedly favorable impression last night." After making movies for three years she returned to the New York stage in November 1920. Kennedy played in Cornered, staged at the Astor Theatre. Produced by Henry Savage, the play was taken from the writing of Dodson Mitchell. Kennedy performed a dual role. She acted the character of a widow in the comedy Beware of Widows which was produced by the Maxine Elliott Theatre in December 1925. A reviewer for The New York Times remarked about Kennedy's physical beauty as well as her skill as a comedian. She returned to Broadway in her later years, performing in August 1965 with Ruth Gordon, in A Very Rich Woman. That was her first stage appearance in 33 years. ALS, 1981, 1p. He was a peripheral member of an "Our Gang" rip-off in the Mickey McGuire comedy shorts, portrayed the infant-turned-pig in Alice in Wonderland (1932), did a turn in blackface as a "shrunken" Eddie Cantor in Roman Scandals (1933) and frequently popped up as a lasciviously leering baby in the risqué musical highlights of Busby Berkeley's Warner Bros. films. One of Barty's most celebrated cinema moments occurred in 1937's Nothing Sacred, in which, playing a small boy, he pops up out of nowhere to bite Fredric March in the leg.TV audiences began to connect his name with his face in the 1950s when Barty was featured on various variety series hosted by bandleader Spike Jones. He is notable for his encyclopedic 21-volume work, Life Histories of North American Birds, published 1919-1968 and completed posthumously. Using his own experiences, the published literature, and contributions from hundreds of others, he put together by far the most comprehensive repository of knowledge about the biology of the birds of North America. 321. Alexander Schindler (1925-2000) Rabbi and the leading figure of American Reform Judaism during the 1970s and 1980s. Born in Germany , he came to America with his sister at age 12; his mother later followed. He was one of the last European-born leaders of American Reform Jewry. He served as president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (since renamed the Union for Reform Judaism) from 1973 to 1996. His best-known, and most-controversial, pronouncements were his call for Jews to accept Patrilineal Descent (recognizing as Jewish, children of Jewish fathers) and "outreach" to non-Jews. He intended this to include general proselytizing to non-Jews, but in practice this applied to non-Jews married to Jews. He served as chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Signed page "The American Jewish Experience. 323. [FILM] Lina Basquette (1907-1994) American actress noted as much for her more than 75 years in entertainment beginning in the silent film era, as her tumultuous personal life and nine marriages. In 1925, Basquette began an affair with Sam Warner of Warner Brothers and the couple married on July 4, 1925. She was a mother at 19, and a widow at 20. After appearing in The Godless Girl, Basquette soon became a star in future DeMille films. By 1930, Basquette was broke and spent a good amount of her time partying with fellow actresses Jean Harlow, Clara Bow and Carole Lombard. 328. (Chaplain to Queen Victoria) JBD - the D stands for Durham (Joseph Barber Lightfoot) (1828-1889) was an English theologian and Bishop of Durham, usually known as J.B. Lightfoot. In 1857 he became tutor and his fame as a scholar grew. He was made Hulsean professor in 1861, and shortly afterwards chaplain to the Prince Consort and honorary chaplain in ordinary to Queen Victoria. In 1866 he was Whitehall preacher, and in 1871 he became canon of St Paul's Cathedral. In 1879 Lightfoot was consecrated bishop of Durham in succession to Charles Baring . He was as successful in this position as he had been when professor of theology, and he soon surrounded himself with a band of scholarly young men. His father was commissary-general in the American Revolution; one of the chief officers of the Bank of North America [1st bank in the Union], and rendered greatly in raising money to finance the War of 1812. Stephen, author of the letter offered here, began as a note-clerk in the Bank of the United States, but resigned and soon afterward attacked the bank in a series of vindictive articles signed "BRUTUS." He then fought at the battle of New Orleans. Afterward he established "The Columbian Observer," a Democratic paper in the interests of Andrew Jackson, also resuming the letters of "Brutus," whose authorship was thus acknowledged. 335. JOHN FIEDLER (1925- ) American Actor -did his first professional work in his native Wisconsin. Fiedler's many Broadway appearances included the 1960 play A Raisin in the Sun, in which he was the only Caucasian in a virtually all-black cast. His first film role was as the supplicative Juror No. 2 in Twelve Angry Men (1957). Fiedler's stock in trade was the meek-looking soul who compensated for his demeanor with a nasty temper or sadistic streak. In this capacity, he was often seen as vindictive school principals, obstreperous civil servants or combative psychiatric patients (vide TV's The Bob Newhart Show). Incredibly prolific in films and on television, John Fiedler's best-known role was Vinnie, Oscar Madison's card-playing crony in both the stage and screen versions of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple. Neff, and later was involved with the Oregon land fraud scandal, for which he was indicted and convicted while a sitting U.S. Senator, one of only eleven sitting U.S. Senators ever indicted, and one of only five ever convicted. Hoyt  Jr. was born in Wilkes-Barre and graduated from Yale University in 1878 and the law school of the University of Pennsylvania in 1881. After a career spent in private practice as a lawyer in Pennsylvania, starting in Pittsburgh and then in banking he became an assistant attorney general in 1897 and then, in 1903, was appointed Solicitor General by Theodore Roosevelt. The Menninger Clinic, conceived with the idea of collecting many specialists in one center, was founded in Topeka in 1919 by Karl and his father, Charles Frederick (1862-1953); in 1925 they were joined by William. The Menninger Foundation, established for research, training, and public education in psychiatry, came into existence in 1941 and soon became a U.S. psychiatric and psychoanalytic center. At the close of World War II, he was instrumental in founding the Winter Veterans Administration Hospital, Topeka, which functioned as a mental hospital and as the center of the largest psychiatric training program in the world. He is best remembered for his novel Gunnar: A Tale of Norse Life, generally considered to have been the first novel by a Norwegian immigrant in America. In 1873 he entered the atelier of Jean-Léon Gérôme in the École des Beaux Arts at Paris, subsequently joining the classes of Carolus-Duran, with whom he remained until 1877. Returning to New York, he became a member of the Society of American Artists in 1878 and of the National Academy of Design in 1890. His pictures of New England types, and illustrations of John Keats, brought him into prominence. Subsequently he turned his attention to decoration, and executed panels and medallions for the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, a panel for the Essex County Court House in Newark, New Jersey as well as numerous panels for private residences and stained glass windows for various churches, including St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church, Newark. He was an instructor in the schools of Cooper Union , New York, during 1882 to 1885, and in the school of the National Academy of Design from 1889 to 1892. Low, who is known to a wider circle as the friend of R. L. Stevenson, published some reminiscences, A Chronicle of Friendships, 1873-1900 (1908). A mural by him is located in the Howard M. Metzenbaum U.S. Courthouse. Original auto-lithograph, plate signed, 12 x 8 flush. Autolithography means an original image made directly on the stone or plate. This is from a portfolio done for the American Artists' War Emergency Fund, one of the numerous war activities of the National Arts Club of New York, its object being to aid American Artist Soldiers or their dependents. [ART] Charles Meryon (1821-1868) French artist, who worked almost entirely in etching, as he suffered from color-blindness.  He is generally recognised as the most significant etcher of 19th century France. He also suffered from mental illness, dying in an asylum. His most famous work is a series of views of Paris. Offered here "Le Ministère de la Marine" (The Admiralty, Paris), photogravure 1926 of his etching [1865].  These superb photogravures, there were 20 printed in 1926, are often sold as etchings. You see them all the time offered at around $400 to $800 each. The sellers, obviously are not aware of what they are offering. The original 1865 etching retailed at $1500. 488. [ART] John Kay (1742- 1826) Scottish caricaturist and engraver. He was born near Dalkeith, where his father was a mason. At thirteen he was apprenticed to a barber, whom he served for six years. He then went to Edinburgh , where in 1771 he obtained the freedom of the city by joining the corporation of barber-surgeons. In 1785, induced by the favour which greeted certain attempts of his to etch in aquafortis, he took down his barber's pole and opened a small print shop in Parliament Square. There he continued to flourish, painting miniatures, and publishing at short intervals his sketches and caricatures of local celebrities and oddities, who abounded at that period in Edinburgh society. Kay's portraits were collected by Hugh Paton and published under the title A series of original portraits and caricature etchings by the late John Kay, with biographical sketches and illustrative anecdotes (Edinburgh, 2 vols. 4to, 1838; 8vo ed., 4 vols., 1842; new 4to ed., with additional plates, 2 vols., 1877), forming a unique record of the social life and popular habits of Edinburgh at its most interesting epoch. Original etching, image size approx. 3 x 2" plus clean margins. 489. David Lawrence (1888-1973) conservative newspaperman and former student of Woodrow Wilson at Princeton University. In 1916, he became the Washington correspondent of the New York Evening Post. After his reelection as U.S. President in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson fired Irish-American White House secretary (chief of staff) Joseph Patrick Tumulty in 1916 to placate anti-Catholic sentiment, particularly from his wife and his advisor Colonel Edward M. House, after which David Lawrence successfully interceded on his behalf to remain. During the presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, David Lawrence criticised 'The New Deal' in his 1932 book Beyond the New Deal, in which his observation of economic activity led him to distinguish between free enterprise and corporatism, writing that "Theoretically, corporations are creations of the state." In 1926, Lawrence founded United States Daily, a weekly newspaper devoted to covering government, and seven years later shut it down to start United States News for an audience of community leaders, business people and politicians. In 1948, United States News merged with Lawrence's two-year-old weekly magazine, World Report to form the news magazine U.S. News & World Report. At the time of Lawrence's 1973 death, the magazine had a circulation of two million. On April 22, 1970, David Lawrence was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard Nixon. 509. [AUTHORS] ALBERT EDWARD WIGGAM - author of "THE NEW DECALOGUE OF SCIENCE." Short ALS, 1930, written on 6 x 4 card [lined side]. Age toned. Many lay popularizers of eugenics also appealed to religious traditions to promote their agenda. The most notable, it seems, was Albert Edward Wiggam, who traveled the lecture circuit promoting eugenics as "the final program for the complete Christianization of mankind." Wiggam even rewrote the Ten Commandments, in which "The Duty of Eugenics" replaced "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." The "Duty of Scientific Research" supplanted the proscription against making graven images, while the "Duty of Preferential Reproduction" replaced "Thou shalt not kill / Will Durant - Signed w/ sentiment sheet of his stationary. 510. Charles Erskine Scott Wood (1852-1944) author, civil libertarian, soldier, and attorney. He is best known as the author of the 1927 satirical bestseller, Heavenly Discourse. Following his service he became a prominent attorney in Portland, Oregon, where he often defended labor unions and "radicals" including birth control activist Margaret Sanger. Like many Cleveland Democrats, including his long time friend Mark Twain, Wood joined the American Anti-Imperialist League. 513. [FRANCE] Marie-Louise Becomes a Regent - offered here is Bulletin Des Lois No. 530, signed in type by Napoleon and Marie-Louise, 8pp, 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 in. Empress Marie Louise of France [1791-1847] was the second wife of Napoleon I. On 20 March 1811, Marie Louise (as she was known in France) gave birth to a son, Napoléon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte, styled King of Rome and later Duke of Reichstadt. Marie Louise acted as Regent of France from April to December 1812 during the Russian campaign and again from April 1813 to January 1814 during her husband's absence in the German campaign. After Napoléon was forced to abdicate his throne in April 1814, he was exiled to the island of Elba. Marie Louise returned to Austria, never to see her husband again. VG............80-120

516. [FRANCE]  FUNERAL EULOGY FOR NAPOLEON'S GENERAL BARON DELORT, delivered "By a high /and old officer before the French Parliament", unsigned. Author is unknown. Approx. 8.5 x 13 in.  Baron Jacques-Antoine-Adrien Delort (16 November 1773 – 28 March 1846) was a French general and deputy. A National Guardsman at the age of 16 in 1789, he died a Lieutenant General, aide-de-camp to the King and a Peer of France. Major of the 9th Dragoon Regiment, his conduct at Austerlitz gave him command of the 24th Dragoons, at the head of which he covered himself with glory in Spain at Molins del Rey, Valls, Vic, and Saguntum. As a general of brigade in 1811, he held provisional command of the cavalry of the Army of Aragon through 1813. He beat Joseph O'Donnell at Castalla and charged the pass at Ordal. Recalled to France, Delort charged again at Montereau then, as a general of division, he commanded the 14th Division of Reserve Cavalry at Waterloo. DELORT is one of the names inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe on Column 36..........100-200

518. [THEATRE] GERALD SAVORY [1909-1996]  English playwright and screenwriter specialising in comedies. His earliest work in the film industry was as a dialogue writer for director Alfred Hitchcock's Young and Innocent (1937).  He spent some time in the United States in the 1940s writing for film and television and became an American citizen.  From 1964 to 1965 he was writer, producer and production manager for Granada Television, producing five episodes of   ITV Play of the Week; adapting Saki, J.B. Priestley, Noël Coward and Tennessee Williams for television. He then joined the BBC first as then Head of Serials, then Head of Plays. He notably produced five episodes of the thoroughly panned Churchill's People (1975–76) and six of the eight episodes of Love in a Cold Climate for Thames Television in 1980.  TLS, San Francisco, c. 1930s, 1p, 8vo. 519. David Derek Stacton (1923-1968)  American novelist, historian and poet. TLS, no date, 1p, to Mr. Silkin, probably Jon Silkin (1930-1997) the British poet. Stacton was born in San Francisco. In author profiles, however, he claimed to have been born April 25, 1925 in Minden, Nevada (several of his books are set in Nevada). Stacton attended Stanford University from 1941–43. He served in the Civilian Public Service as a conscientious objector, and wrote a letter as “David Stacton” decrying the compliant American masses to Dwight Macdonald’s Politics in 1945. He lived in Europe from 1951–1954, 1960–1962, and 1964–1965. Most of his books as David Stacton were originally published in England. Stacton wrote under the pseudonyms Carse Boyd, Bud Clifton, David Dereksen and David West. He also ghosted Living Religions Of The World a 1956 work accredited to Frederic Spiegelberg.  VG........50-75

He was elected a Republican and later reelected a Liberal Republican to the United States House of Representatives in 1868, serving from 1869 to 1873. 524. [FILM]  Layte Bowden - Pan-American Airlines stewardess who kept company with Peter Lawford for the two years he and his ex-wife, Pat Kennedy, lived at opposite ends of the country. She was a former beauty queen, a one-time receptionist and secretary to then-Sen. George Smathers (D-Fla.) who graced Roll Call’s pages in 1960 as part of a double header baseball-themed shot, went on to join the jet set — literally.  After leaving the Hill in 1962, she, whom Life Magazine once featured in an article about “pretty girls” in Washington, joined the ranks of the Pucci-clad Pan Am stewardesses. “We were treated like movie stars on Pan Am,” she said. In her role at the airline, she also flew on White House press charters as chief purser, accompanying Presidents John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon on official trips.  She was with JFK in Berlin when he gave his famous “Ich bein ein Berliner” speech and in Dallas the day he was shot. “I was on Air Force One when the word came in” that he had died, she said. “I fainted in the aisle and somebody got brandy and poured it down me.” Before she traded in her swinging-single gal status to marry Butler Aviation CEO Paul Dopp in 1971, the Floridian said she also dated a dizzying array of Congressmen, movie stars, and other high-ranking officials, including then-Rep. John Brademas (D-Ind.), Warren Beatty and Kennedy brother-in-law and Rat Packer Peter Lawford. She had a small role in the Lawford-produced film “Billie,” starring Patty Duke. In the mid-1960s, Dopp and CBS News Anchor Dan Rather began collaboration on a book based on their experiences traveling with presidents but never completed it because she “was so busy having a good time.”  Rare ALS, 1966, 1p, to Milt Ebbins, Peter Lawford's agent and business partner.........75-100

525. [LINCOLN] LEONARD W. VOLK (1828-1895) American sculptor. Most famous for making a life mask of American President Abraham Lincoln. In 1857, he settled in Chicago, where he helped to establish the Academy of Design and was for eight years its head. In 1860 he made a life mask of Lincoln, of whom only one other was ever made (by Clark Mills in 1865). In the early part of spring in 1860, during Abraham Lincoln's visit to Chicago, Volk asked him to sit for a bust. When Lincoln agreed, the artist decided to start by doing a life mask. Lincoln found the process of letting wet plaster dry on his face, followed by a skin-stretching removal process, "anything but agreeable." But he endured it with good humor, and when he saw the final bust, he was quite pleased, declaring it "the animal himself." Volk later used the life mask and bust of 1860 as the basis for other editions, including a full-length statue of Lincoln. Signed 1893 bank check. VG.................100-200

He performed in the first production of the Royal English Opera (now the Palace Theater), playing in the première of the opera Ivanhoe. Davies was noted for frequently singing with his eyes closed. SIGNED CARD, 1922. [4] Howard Crosby (1826-1891) American preacher and teacher. From 1870 to 1881 Crosby was chancellor of New York University. He was one of the American revisers of the English version of the New Testament. Crosby took a prominent part in politics. He urged to excise reform and opposed total abstinence. He was one of the founders and the first president of the New York Society for the Prevention of Crime, and pleaded for better management of Indian affairs and international copyright. Curtis (1850-1933) was a significant American publisher. Curtis was born in Portland, Maine, and entered the publishing business there with a weekly newspaper. He founded the Philadelphia-based Curtis Publishing Company, which published the Ladies' Home Journal and the Saturday Evening Post, as well as several other magazines and newspapers. For a time he own the Public Ledger, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the New York Evening Post. He was also known for his philanthropy to hospitals, museums, and schools. He obtained a pipe organ manufactured by the Austin Organ Company which had been displayed at the Philadelphia Sesquicentennial Exposition of 1926 and donated it to the University of Pennsylvania. It was built into Irvine Auditorium when the building was constructed and is known to this day as the Curtis Organ. It is one of the largest pipe organs in the world. SIGNATURE on card. VG.
