SIGNED CARD, DATED 1874. [3] [CABINET] William DeWitt Mitchell [1874-1955] U.S. Attorney General for the entirety of Herbert Hoover's Presidency. Born in Winona, Minnesota, he received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Minnesota. After he was admitted to the Minnesota bar he began practicing law in St. Paul. Mitchell served as an infantry officer during the Spanish-American War and World War I. On June 4, 1925, he was appointed Solicitor General of the United States. President Hoover appointed him Attorney General of the United States on March 4, 1929, and he held that office until March 4, 1933. Mitchell then settled in New York City where he practiced law. He was named chairman of the Committee on Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, and chief counsel of the joint congressional committee investigating the attack on Pearl Harbor. He died in 1955, in Syosset, New York. signed 3-3/4 X 2-1/4 IN. card. [4] Samuel John "Lamorna" Birch, RA, RWS (1869 - 1955) was an artist in oils and watercolours. At the suggestion of fellow artist Stanhope Forbes, Birch adopted the soubriquet "Lamorna" to distinguish himself from Lionel Birch, an artist who was also working in the area at that time. Lamorna Birch was born in Egremont in Cheshire, England. He was self-taught as an artist, other than for a brief period of study at the Académie Colarossi in Paris during 1895. He is thought of as a painter of northern England, but his most important period was when he settled in Lamorna, Cornwall in 1902, and many of his most famous pictures date from this time and the beautiful Lamorna Cove is usually their subject matter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1892. He held his first one man exhibition at the Fine Art Society in 1906. He is said to have produced more than 20,000 pictures. The exhibition Shades of British Impressionism Lamorna Birch and his Circle was shown at Warrington Museum & Art Gallery in the Mezzanine in October 2004. This details his links with Henry Scott Tuke and Thomas Cooper Gotch and many others who settled in the artists' colony in the 1880s and 1890s. "These painters helped to change the face of British art. Their emphasis on colour and light, truth and social realism brought about a revolution in British art." says the catalogue for the show. 48. [WORLD WAR II]  Hans Baur (1897-1993) was Adolf Hitler's pilot during his political campaigns of the 1920s and 1930s. He later became Hitler's personal pilot and leader of the Reichsregierung squadron.  Captured by the Soviets at the end of World War II in Europe, he endured ten years of imprisonment in the USSR before being released on 10 October 1955 to the French, who then imprisoned him until 1957. 56. [FRANCE] Printed DECRET De La Convention Nationale, Feb. 5, 1794, 3-pages, about 7-3/4 x 8-1/2. This is from the period know as The Reign of Terror on the topic of Slavery. On first page it names General Pichegru(e) in Chief of Northern Army. Jean-Charles Pichegru (1761 - 1804) French general and political figure of the French Revolution and Revolutionary Wars. He briefly served in the American Revolutionary War. In December 1793 Hoche was arrested, probably owing to his colleague's denounciations, and Pichegru became commander-in-chief of the army of the Rhine-and-Moselle, then he was summoned to succeed Jourdan in the army of the North in February 1794, subsequently fighting three major campaigns of one year (see: French Revolutionary Wars: Campaigns of 1794). The forces of the Kingdom of Great Britain, the Dutch Republic and Habsburg Austria held a strong position along the Sambre to the North Sea. He planned a coup d'état known as the Coup of 18 Fructidor, but was arrested, and with fourteen others deported to Cayenne, French Guiana, in 1797. He and seven others escaped and fled to Paramaribo. The gouverneur De Friderici allowed them to get on board on a ship to the United States. Then he went to London, serving on General Aleksandr Rimsky-Korsakov's staff in the campaign of 1799. He went to Paris in August 1803 with Georges Cadoudal to head a Royalist uprising against the First Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte . Betrayed by a friend, he was arrested on 28 February 1804, and was later found strangled in prison, but it could also have been a suicide. The Reign of Terror (September 5, 1793 to July 28, 1794), also known simply as The Terror (French: la Terreur), was a period of violence that occurred after the onset of the French Revolution, incited by conflict between rival political factions, the Girondins and the Jacobins, and marked by mass executions of "enemies of the revolution." The guillotine (called the "National Razor") became the symbol of the revolutionary cause, strengthened by a string of executions, including King Louis XVI, and Marie Antoinette. Other than a damp stain along bottom edge this is in excellent condition. Rare as such!............100-150

59. [ART] Sir Hubert von Herkomer CVO (1849-1914)  British painter of  German descent, and also a pioneering film-director and composer. Though a very successful portraitist, especially of men, he is mainly remembered for his earlier works that took a realistic approach to the conditions of life of the poor. Hard Times, showing the family of a travelling day-labourer at the side of a road, is probably his best known work.  Original etching, title "The Poacher's Fate", plate signed, image approx. 14 x 10-1/4" plus margins. 61.  [FILM HISTORY] Bill Asher (1921-2012) American television and film producer, film director, and screenwriter. He was one of the most prolific early television directors, producing or directing over two dozen series.  With television in its infancy, Asher introduced the sitcom Our Miss Brooks, which was adapted from a radio show. He began directing I Love Lucy by 1952. In 1964, he produced and directed Bewitched, which starred his then-wife Elizabeth Montgomery. As a result of his early success, Asher was considered an "early wunderkind of TV-land," and is  credited in one magazine article for 'inventing' the sitcom. 62. [CARDINAL] Louis Jacques Maurice de Bonald (1787- 1870) French cardinal (1841). Born at Millau, he was the son of the philosopher Louis Gabriel Ambroise de Bonald. He was condemned by the council of state for a pastoral letter attacking Dupin the elder's Manuel de droit ecclsiastique . In 1848 he held a memorial service for those who fell gloriously in defence of civil and religious liberty. In 1851 he nevertheless advocated in the senate the maintenance of the temporal power of the Pope by force of arms. ALS, no date, 1p, 7-1/2 x 5-3/4 in., signed at the beginning and at the end. 63. [FRANCE] Elisabeth de Mac Mahon (1834-1900) was a first lady of France in 1873-1879. She was married to President Patrice de Mac-Mahon, Duke of Magenta.  She married Patrice de Mac-Mahon, Duke of Magenta, in 1854. Her spouse became president in 1873. As first lady, Elisabeth de Mac Mahon established and participated in representation, decorated the Presidential Palace, hosted balls were she mixed the old and new aristocracy, dressed in the latest fashion and became the president in the French Red Cross, were she started a charity project in making baby clothing for the poor.  Elisabeth de Mac Mahon is known to have exerted influence upon the affairs of state during the presidency of Mac-Mahon. Her opinion about various political ministers and officials were respected, and she supported the claims of the count of Chambord on the throne of France. She played a part in the 16 May 1877 crisis. Uncle of Abraham Lincoln

64.  Kentucky Pioneer document dated 1805, summons for Williamson Bruce to appear before the Judges of Hardin County [Elizabethtown] Kentucky. They are to answer William Bush plaintiff.  William Bush, brother of Sarah who was Abraham Lincoln's step-mother, therefore William Bush was Abe's uncle by marriage. This document was written and signed by the noted Kentucky pioneer, Ben Helm. Also signed by William Bush on the verso. BEN HELM (b. Fairfax county, Va., May 8, 1767; son of Capt. Thomas Helm, apioneer settler of Kentucky, who moved from Virginia to the Falls of Ohio, in the fall of 1779. In 1801-03 Ben Helm erected the first brick house built there. He became a surveyor; was state senator, 1796-1800; clerk of the Hardin county courts, 1800-17; an officer with the rank of major in the war of 1812; filled various other offices of honor and trust in Kentucky: purchased the farm owned by Christopher Bush, father of Mrs. Sarah (Bush) Johnston Lincoln, step-mother of Abraham Lincoln, and was a partner in a general store with Duff Green [later, American statesman], conducting the business as Green & Helm. He died in Elizabethtown, 1858, nearly 91 years old.Apparently William Bush was somewhat of a troublemaker in the E-town area. He was born in 1763, and in 1828 he acquired the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had lived, before they left for Indiana. His sister, Sarah, became the step-mother of the future U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln. See the article THAT ROGUE, WILLIAM BUSH, by Blaine V. Houmes, the Iowa physician and collector of Lincolniana. This article appears in The MANUSCRIPT, Summer 2002. William Bush acquired land like his parents, and by 1817 had married and built an attractive brick house [Elizabethtown area], a sign of sure success. He served on jury duty with Thomas Lincoln, after of Abraham and acquired the Knob Creek farm where the Lincolns had lived, before they left for Indiana∞, and later Illinois. Although prosperous, he was frequently entangled in lawsuits. His reputation was guarded and he did not enjoy the respect of other members of the Bush family. Little is known of Lincoln's relationship with the Bush family. Lincoln claimed that his family's removal (to Indiana) was partly on account of slavery, but chiefly on account of the difficulty in land titles in Kentucky. Thomas Lincoln was known to be anti-slavery, and as a young boy Abraham probably observed slaves being taken in chains to Southern markets, on the road beside his home. Carl Sandburg and other historians have not dwelt on the cantankerous nature of the President's uncle by marriage, let alone the fact that there was a slave-trader in the family. 68. [ART] Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) Original copper etching plate, title is  Negligee, c. 1920, 6 x 8 in. Of great rarity;  listed as number 39 in the Kennedy Galleries Walt Kuhn Checklist, made for an exhibit of his prints in 1967; it is cited as - no more than 6 impressions are known to exist.  Walt Kuhn was born in Brooklyn, and after a period of study art in Europe, he returned to the US to work as a cartoonist; illustrator, and developing artist. Aware of the great surge of modernist artistic activity in Europe, he joined with others to encourage Arthur B. Davies to get behind the idea of bringing a great European modernist art show to the US, and traveled with Davies to Europe to select art for the occasion (which became the 1913 Armory Show).  Negligee was probably done c. 1920 when Kuhn, Davies, and a few others in the US were experimenting with modernism as they developed their printmaking skills.  Kuhn successfully continued printmaking and painting in a modernist mode for the next 30 or so years.  The second scan showing below is of one of the rare prints pulled from this plate and signed by Kuhn.  The picture was borrowed and not offered for sale here.  You are bidding on the original plate only. ...............2500-3500

69. [ART]  Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) American painter and an organizer of the famous Armory Show of 1913, which was America's first large-scale introduction to European Modernism. Rare b/w print pulled directly from the original block. The block was made for a 1932 Kuhn family Christmas card. During the 1930s up until around 1940, the Kuhn family sent out cards printed from the blocks that were hand-colored by Walt Kuhn and Brenda [daughter]. It is unknown how much watercoloring that each did on all those cards. In later years, Brenda had photo-mechanical reproductions made, which she herself hand-colored and sent out. One of those hand-colored [by Brenda] reproductions of this 1932 print is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute. Over the years we've noticed that these Christmas cards have been sold as original watercolors. To be more specific - those Christmas cards could technically be described as watercolors although since it is known how much of the coloring was done by Walt himself it seems a little misleading to call those prints watercolors by Walt Kuhn. 70.  [ART]  The Story of the Armory Show  by Walt Kuhn, 1938.   Written and published by the artist who served as the Executive Secretary of the historic Armory Show of 1913, this 28 page pamphlet is in sharp and crisp condition, staple-bound in a bright unfaded orange paper cover. It tells the story of the exhibition from the insider's perspective, as well as a thoughtful retrospective analysis of how the show impacted American culture. An alphabetical list of the 300 artists who exhibited is useful for the scholar.  Accompanied with a 1965 bank check signed by Brenda Kuhn, the daughter of Walt Kuhn. VG. Staple-bound Wrappers. 71. [FRANCE] Victor Margueritte  (1866-1942) and his brother Paul Margueritte  (1860-1918) were French novelists, both born in Algeria, were the sons of General Jean Auguste Margueritte (1823 – 1870), who after an honorable career in Algeria was mortally wounded in the great cavalry charge at Sedan and died in Belgium on 6 September 1870. An account of his life was published by Paul Margueritte as Mon père (1884; enlarged ed., 1897). The names of the two brothers are generally associated, on account of their collaboration.  Victor Margueritte wrote several theatrical "charades" and collaborated with his brother Paul on at least one pantomime: La Peur.  His novel La Garçonne (1922) was considered so shocking it caused the author to lose his Légion d'honneur.   Offered here are 4 ALSs, one being on a postcard dated 1908. 72. [US NAVAL] Ellsworth Davis [1892-1946] American naval officer. He served on the U.S.S. Florida as a signal officer, official uniform inspector and flag lieutenant. During the U.S. occupation of Vera Cruz, Mexico on April 1914, Davis led a company onshore and overtook the town's postal service building. In addition to his service on the U.S.S. Florida, Davis served in the Mediterranean and off of the U.S. Atlantic Coast on the Brooklyn and the Fairfax. He was commanding officer of the USS Fairfax from 1934 to 1936. The Fairfax was a Wickes-class destroyer in the United States Navy during the World War I, later transferred to the Royal Navy as HMS Richmond (G88), as a Town class destroyer. The Fairfax took part in the Presidential Review taken by Franklin D. Roosevelt in San Diego in March 1933, and then sailed for the East coast, where she continued her reserve training duty. She also patrolled in Cuban waters, and in the summers of 1935, 1937, 1938, 1939, and 1940 sailed out of Annapolis training midshipmen of the Naval Academy. Between October 1935 and March 1937, she served with the Special Service Squadron out of Coco Solo and Balboa, Canal Zone, operating primarily on the Atlantic side of the Canal Zone. Offered here are 16 naval documents from 1919, six are signed by Ellsworth Davis.  One is  signed in type   by Franklin D. 74. [FRANCE] Xavier de Ravignan  (1795-1858) French Jesuit preacher and author. Educated in Paris, he resigned his army commission to study law. Auditor of the royal court. Deputy attorney-general by 1821.  Entering a Sulpician monastery, and later joining the Society of Jesus, he was ordained in 1828, and after several years as professor and retreat preacher at Montrouge, he went to Notre Dame, where his logic, serenity, and zeal won souls by the hundreds. Superior of his brethren at Bordeaux from 1837 to 1842, and at Paris from 1848 to 1851. He preached throughout France and in Rome, Belgium, and London. His calm, eloquent De l'Existence et de l'Institut des Jesuites of 1844, vindicating the Society, sold 25,000 copies in one year. However, the Jesuits' strife continued until they were forced to disband for a time in France.  Despite painful controversy with his superiors and imputations from other quarters, he remained loyal to his order. In 1854 he brought out Clement XIII et Clement XIV, a dispassionate treatise, of no great literary merit, on the defender and the suppressor of the Jesuits. He steadfastly refused preferment, even the archbishopric of Paris, devoting himself to other works. As a mathematician, he was known for his founding work in the areas of measure theory and probability.  Along with René-Louis Baire and Henri Lebesgue, Émile Borel was among the pioneers of measure theory and its application to probability theory. [FRANCE] Aime Giron  (1836-1907) French poet, writer, lawyer.  Aimé Giron began his literary career by publishing poems which appeared in the Revue de Paris, while continuing his legal career in his hometown, where he was secretary of the Academic society. In 1863 he published The Christmas Sabot (with illustrations by Léopold Flameng) who met a great success and was translated into several languages.  He then published the poetry collection The Strange Loves, and Three girls in 1864 and Mysterious new in 1866.  In 1870 he abandoned as a lawyer to defend the invaded territory. He moved to Bois-Colombes and becomes a contributor to Figaro, the Gauls and France Illustrated.  In 1873 he published a new collection of poems Les Cordes de Fer who obtained a warm welcome. He was one of the most prolific writers of his time, finding his inspiration in history and legends of the Velay. He described the most beautiful sites, he has told the captions so that gave rise to the desire to know the Haute-Loire, with warm enthusiasm that gives the love of native soil.  He was distinguished on numerous occasions and in particular by the Academy of Floral Games and the French Academy. It is decorated in July 1899 by the Spanish Queen Regent of the Order of Charles III on behalf of King Alfonso XIII, in return for pro-Spanish articles he published during the Spanish-American War in 1898.  Aimé Giron is the brother of the painter Léon Giron and the father of the Egyptologist Christmas Giron (Giron-loved Christmas).  A street in the Puy-en-Velay bears his name. Text by Riva Castleman Technics and Creativity Gemini GEL, 1971, 10.5 x 8.5 in. stiff wrappers in plastic clamshell box. 108 pp. 364 mostly thumbnail illustrations (20 full size in color), bibliography, index of artists. A Catalogue raisonne (to early 1971), published in a boxed edition of 22,500, with its problematic Jasper Johns "Target," an offset lithograph with applique paintbrush and three watercolor disks, in addition to the print , which is glued to the inside front cover of the box). Box also contains the catalog, a sheet of protective foam. The foam sheet is normally discolored and usually has three circular offprints from the watercolor disks. According to Richard S. Field ("Jasper Johns Prints 1970-1977"), the image was derived from a pencil drawing and collage of 1960 in the Sonnabend collection. A hand-pulled edition of 50 copies and six artists proofs was printed by Kenneth Tyler at Gemini in 1971. The offset edition was produced by Graphic Press, Los Angeles. Johns's participation in this enterprise was, at best, limited to the Gemini printing, which was hand-signed and numbered. The signature on the MoMA target was mechanically reproduced [the one offered here]. If it appears to have been signed in ink or pencil, forgery is indicated. The white clamshell box is spotted but intact. The other main factor involving this multiple is the condition of the offset target lithograph. As is often the case a former owner has wetted the watercolor blocks and started to paint the target but has only painted a small part in yellow. The brush is often missing as is missing here. 83. [FRANCE] Alexandre Moreau de Jonnes  (1778-1870) French adventurer , military and official  in charge of General Statistics of France until 1851, when Alfred Legoyt succeeded him. At the age of thirteen  he was drafted by Jean-Lambert Tallien in the National Guard to serve in the minimal section keeping the King Louis XVI imprisoned in the Tuileries.   His section was controlled by the Marquis de La Fayette.  In his post, he is witness to the conspiracy of the Knights of the dagger and the day of August 10, 1791 during which held "the bloodiest battle of all those delivered in a public place during the Revolution."  In September 1791 , he returned to Rennes to resume his studies, but he was again called in garrison and his battalion was sent to the department 's Ille-et-Vilaine , in the fight against insurgents in Morbihan. It is a civil war, made ambushes, ambush, of treachery and killings. He participated in the battles of Hede and Vannes.  After these hard campaigns, Alexander is assigned as a gunner on a Navy ship, brig of war, Papillon , including the captain, a former officer of the Royal Navy, is greatly appreciated. At the age of sixteen, he is vested with functions Coxswain . The mission of the ship is to browse the ports of the Levant , to provide instructions to the consuls of the Republic of France. The mission takes place without any problems until the stop of Toulon, where they fall in the fighting between royalists and republicans . The captain did not want to take part, preferring to scuttle his ship. Alexandre was posted to the walls and in the custody of the magazine.  When the city fell to the royalists, a part of the navy engaged the British. The city is killing before being occupied by the British, then she is besieged by new French troops which stands Captain Napoleon Bonaparte , which then controls the guns. Instead resumed and the British withdrew, Alexander and a few soldiers tried unsuccessfully to prevent the fire from the arsenal and the city. [FRANCE]  Louise Crozat de Thiers Salbigothon Augustine, often named Louise Crozat de Thiers, (1733-1813).   She was the daughter of Louis Antoine Crozat and Augustine Marie Louise de Laval (1712-1776). Diderot reported his conversations in his interview with the philosopher Marshal of *** . His older sister Marie Antoinette Louise Crozat de Thiers (1731-1809) married Joachim Casimir de Bethune (1724-1769), governor of Arras.  Louise Crozat de Thiers became the second wife of François-Victor de Broglie (1718-1804) , 11 April 1752 . The title of Duchess opened the doors of the Court where it is presented in May of the same year. It is ladies lady companion of the younger 1754 to 1767 and arranged accommodation in Versailles.  Long "Kitchen" note dated 1763, 1p., signed by Baron de Thiers and his chief Fraichot. He subsequently moved to Saratoga Springs, New York, and then to Washington, District of Columbia, where he was clerk in the office of the solicitor of the treasury. In 1850 he removed to New York, where he advanced slowly to the front rank of his profession. In 1861 he was elected judge of the superior court, and in 1867 was reelected by a heavy majority. On the death of Chief Justice Robertson, Judge Barbour was unanimously chosen to preside in his place. 90. [FRANCE] Jean Soanen (1647–1740)  French Oratorian and bishop of Senez. He was a convinced Jansenist.  In opposition to the papal bull Unigenitus, he with Charles-Joachim Colbert, bishop of Montpellier, Pierre de la Broue who was bishop of Mirepoix, and Pierre de Langle who was bishop of Boulogne, appealed against it in 1717 to a general council.  This group and their followers were known as Appellants; the council was though entirely hypothetical as an idea.  Later, he sent out a pastoral letter to his congregation, urging the reading of Pasquier Quesnel. Pierre Guérin de Tencin, the archbishop of Embrun, then in 1727 had him exiled from his diocese. But Jean Soanen of Senez, a small mountain diocese in Provence, issued in 1726 a Pastoral instruction to his diocese, in which, at the age of 80, he reviewed his whole position in the controversy. He regretted that he had ever signed the Formulary of 1665, withdrew his adhesion to the Bull "Vineam Domini Sabaoth", blamed himself for prohibiting, against his real convictions, the moral Reflexions, and promised never to accept the Unigenitus. Soanen was deprived of his see by the Provincial Synoid of Embrun, which on carious canonical grounds he refused to recognize, and was banished to the abbey of Chaise Dieu in Auvergne, where he remained imprisoned till his death in 1740, at the age of 95.  Autograph Document Signed, unsure if dated, different later handwriting below, approx. 6-1/4 x 4-1/4".  Accompanied by 3 small pages of handwritten notes from  circa 1880. [FRANCE]  François-Marie-Benjamin Richard (1819-1908) Archbishop of Paris, French prelate, was born at Nantes, Loire-Atlantique.  Educated at the seminary of St Sulpice he became successively vicar-general of Nantes, bishop of Belley, and in 1875 coadjutor of Paris. In 1886 the death of Archbishop Guibert was followed by Mgr. Richard's appointment to the see of Paris, and in 1889 he received a cardinal's hat.  In January 1900 the trial of the Assumptionist Fathers resulted in the dissolution of their society as an illegal association. The next day an official visit of the archbishop to the Fathers was noted by the government as an act of a political character, and Mgr. Richard was officially censured. His attitude was in general exceedingly moderate, he had no share in the extremist policy of the Ultramontanes, and throughout the struggle over the law of Associations and the law of Separations he maintained his reasonable temper.  He presided in September 1906 over an assembly of bishops and archbishops at his palace in the rue de Grenelle, a few days after the papal encyclical forbidding French Catholics to form associations for public worship, but it was then too late for conciliation. In December he gave up the archiepiscopal palace to the government authorities. He was then an old man of nearly ninety, and his eviction evoked great sympathy. 95. [PIONEER KENTUCKY]  a 1811 court document, a summons for Richard Mather and mary, his wife, to appear before the Hardin Co. Judges to answer Samuel Percefull in a plea of trespass, asult and battery, damage one thousand dollars. The document written and signed by Ben Helm, who also signs again on the verso. Also signed twice on the verso by Robert Bleakley.  Approx. 7-5/8 x 6-3/8 in.  Mather, original owner of Nolin River farm, sold it to Vance, who sold it to Bush, who sold it to Lincoln. Vance did not complete payment, and obligation was assumed in turn by Bush and then Tom Lincoln, father of Abraham Lincoln.  ROBERT BLEAKLEY - about 1801 Bleakley and Wm. Montgomery, two very interesting young Irishmen, came to Elizabethtown and opened a dry goods store wÎith a stock of goods, and soon became very popular. The store was opened in a log house at the corner of the Public Square.  He was engaged in the rebellion in Ireland in 1798. He evaded Government officers by concealing himself in a vessel and thus made his escape to the United States. Bleakley remained some years after Montgomery left town, and acted as sheriff for several years, and then settled on a farm and died about 1850, leaving a large family.  There is something romantic and interesting in the history of these two men. Born on the same island, engaged in the same rebellion, both compelled to leave to save their lives; emigrating to the same country, finding employment in the same establishment in Baltimore, partners in merchandising in Elizabethtown, marrying sisters, and then living and dying on adjacent farms.  It was in their general store that Tom Lincoln [Abe Lincoln's father] purchased many items when he was courting Nancy Hanks [mother of the future president].  BEN HELM (b. As a teenager in the 1880s he befriended and followed the actor Maurice Barrymore around London when Barrymore, his wife, and their three children visited England in 1884. Faversham idolised Barrymore and tried to imitate him when he began his stage career. Faversham was much admired in such plays such as Brother Officers, Julius Caesar, The Squaw Man, and Othello. He played Romeo to Maude Adams's Juliet. As he aged Faversham continued to take on classic roles and contemporary parts. 113. [MUSIC]  Theo Loevendier (1930 - ) Dutch composer and clarinet player. Loevendie studied composition and clarinet at the Conservatoire of Amsterdam. Initially he concentrated on jazz music. As off 1968 he also wrote concert music, among which operas, concertos and chamber music. Several of his compositions won prizes. Starting 1970 Loevendie taught composition at several Dutch conservatoires. Among his many students were Svitlana Azarova, Matthias Kadar, Vanessa Lann, Peter van Onna, Robin de Raaff, Victor Varela, Sinta Wullur and Evrim Demirel. As a performer, he participated in the ensembles Consort, Brevisand the Theo Loevendie Quintet. In 2004, he founded a new group: The "Ziggurat Ensemble" - as he puts it himself: his dream-ensemble. It consists of a mix of western and non-western instruments: Er-hu, Viola da Gamba, Qanun, Voice, Duduk, Bass, Pan Pipes and Percussion. Loevendie is writing practically all the music for this young and enthusiastic team and in the relatively short time of its existence has celebrated many successes with it. Through this group he became aware of the British Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In 1863, with Clarence King and John William Hill he helped to found the Society for the Advancement of Truth in Art, an American group, similar to the Pre-Raphaelites, who published a journal called The New Path.  In 1869 Cook wrote A Description of the New York Central Park. As a writer and historian, his most important work during his lifetime was his Economia politica del medio evo (Turin, 1839), which enjoyed great popularity at the time, but is now of little value. 128. [FRANCE] (Leon) Maxime Collignon  (1849-1917) Archaeologist and art historian of ancient Greek sculpture. He taught archaeology at Bordeaux beginning in 1877.   In 1907 while inspecting art objects in a storage vault of a provincial museum in Auxerre, France, he discovered one of the most important intact archaic Greek free-standing sculptures known today. Subsequently dubbed the "Lady of Auxerre," no explanation of how the sculpture got to Auxerre has ever been determined, but Collignon brought the piece to the Louvre where it is one of the museum's masterworks. Collignon, together with his mentor, Parrot, introduced archaeology as a discipline in French universities. Fine ALS, 1910, 1p, 5-1/4 x 7 in. Fine condition. 129. [FRANCE] Jules Tannery (1848-1910) French mathematician. Tannery discovered a surface of the fourth order of which all the geodesic lines are algebraic. He was not an inventor, however, but essentially a critic and methodologist. He once remarked, "Mathematicians are so used to their symbols and have so much fun playing with them, that it is sometimes necessary to take their toys away from them in order to oblige them to think." He notably influenced Pierre Duhem, Paul Painlevé, Jules Drach, and Émile Borel to take up science.  His efforts were mainly directed to the study of the mathematical foundations and of the philosophical ideas implied in mathematical thinking. 130. [FRANCE] Juliette Adam (1836-1936)  French author and feminist. She established a salon which was frequented by Gambetta and the other republican leaders against the conservative reaction of the 1870s. In the same interest, she founded the Nouvelle Revue in 1879, which she edited for eight years, and retained influence its administration until 1899.   She published writings by Paul Bourget, Pierre Loti, and Guy de Maupassant as well as Octave Mirbeau's novel Le Calvaire.  She became involved in the Avant-Courrière (Forerunner) association founded in 1893 by Jeanne Schmahl, which called for the right of women to be witnesses in public and private acts, and for the right of married women to take the product of their labor and dispose of it freely.  Adam wrote the notes on foreign politics, and was unremitting in her attacks on Bismarck and in her advocacy of a policy of Revanchism.  She is generally credited with the authorship of papers on various European capitals signed "Paul Vasili," which were, in reality, the work of various writers. The most famous of her numerous novels is Païenne (1883). 131. [FRANCE] Ludovic Vitet (1802 - 1873)  French dramatist and politician.  He was born in Paris. He was educated at the École Normale. His politics were liberal, and he was a member of the society "Aide-toi, le ciel t'aidera." On the triumph of liberal principles in 1830 Guizot created an office especially for Vitet, who became inspector-general of historical monuments. In 1834 he entered the Chamber of Deputies, and two years later was made a member of the Council of State. He was consistent in his monarchist principles, and abstained from taking any part in politics during the second empire. The disasters of 1870-71 reawakened Vitet's interest in public affairs, and he published in the Revue des deux mondes his optimistic "Lettres sur le siège de Paris."  ALS, 1869, 1p, 5-1/4 x 8 in., Signed Vitet. He was a passionate supporter first of Napoleon and later of the Bourbons, and an impressive force in the courtroom. He was a Deputy from 1822 to 1824.  In 1813 he published his first work, la Gaule poétique, a two-volume study of the history of France in terms of its poetry, speeches and beaux-arts. [FRANCE]  Madeleine Brès (1842-1921)  was the first French woman to obtain a medical degree.  In France, to obtain a medical degree was quite a complicated affair.  She first had to obtain the consent of her husband, as at the time French law judged married women to be the legal responsibility of their husbands.  She finally obtained the right to study the medicine course at the faculty.  The dean's decision was met with opposition from the university and medical community. The doctor Henri Montanier wrote in 1868 in the Hospitals Gazette "to make a woman a doctor, it is necessary to make her lose her sensitivity, her timidity, her modesty, harden her to the sight of the most horrible and frightening things. When the woman arrives at that, I ask myself, what remains of the woman? A being who is no longer either a young girl nor a woman; neither a wife, nor a mother." It is difficult to be more eloquent in closing, with the help of spurious arguments, the doors of medicine to women.  Despite his personal endorsement, the Dean Würtz took this application to the Minister of Education, Victor Duruy, who approved the acceptance of Brès, but pre-emptively brought the matter to the Council of Ministers. The Empress Eugénie who, referring to the law passed on 10 March 1803 proclaiming the freedom of the job, advocated for Madeleine Brès to be accepted. Finally, after deliberation by the Council of Ministers, Brès was accepted to enroll to study medicine. [MUSIC] Edwin George Monk  (1819-1900)   English church organist and composer,  who was Organist and Master of Choristers at York Minster for a quarter of a century, and was previously associated with St Columba's and Radley Colleges. In 1859 E.G. Monk succeeded Thomas Simpson Camidge as organist at York Minster, and it was here that the long collaboration between himself and Singleton (who, after an interval living back in Ireland, had gone to York) resulted in the jointly-edited collection The Anglican Hymn-Book – which contained nearly thirty original hymns.   E.G. Monk was one of the first twenty-one members of the Royal College of Organists.   Especially well-known amongst some forty hymn tunes is Monk's Angel Voices, composed in 1861 for Francis Pott's hymn of that name, written for the opening of an organ in Wingates Church, Lancashire.  Another of his tunes is Hopkins, associated with the hymn When from the East the wise men came.  ALS, York, 7 Dec. 1865, 1p, approx. 4-1/4 x 7 in. [FRANCE] Jean-Baptiste Billot (1828-1907) French general and politician.  In 1882 he was minister for war in the second ministry of Charles de Freycinet (1882), the ministry of Charles Duclerc (1882–83) and that of Jules Méline (1896–98). During his time as minister he saw the Dreyfus affair and in 1882 appointed Georges Ernest Boulanger director of infantry at the war office.  He was implicated by Émile Zola of conspiracy to frame Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer, for espionage in an open letter J'accuse. In it Zola accuses General Billot of having held in his hands absolute proof of Dreyfus's innocence and covering it up. He was nominated three times for Academy Awards (Ace in the Hole, Cat Ballou, and Bloodbrothers), but he may be best known for a work that never made it to the screen: his unproduced original script Harrow Alley.  Newman's radio writing included scripts for Escape, Suspense, and The Halls of Ivy as well as the first broadcast episode of Gunsmoke. He is not officially credited for his screenplays for The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape, having renounced credit after sharp disagreements with the director, John Sturges in both cases, over changes made during shooting. 143. [CIVIL WAR] Edward McPherson (1830-1895) Pennsylvania newspaper editor and politician who served 2 terms as a United States Congressman. As a director of the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association, he effected efforts to protect and mark portions of the Gettysburg Battlefield. McPherson organized Company K of the First Pennsylvania Reserves at the beginning of the Civil War, and was defeated in the 1862 reelection when his House of Representatives district (Adams, Franklin, Fulton, Bedford, and Juniata counties) was expanded to include opposing Radical Republicans in Somerset County. President Abraham Lincoln appointed McPherson as Deputy Commissioner of Revenue in 1863. After the Battle of Gettysburg, McPherson became an officer of the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association with an office on the corner of Baltimore and Middle streets and after Congressman Morehead nominated him, Thaddeus Stevens had him appointed as Clerk of the House of Representatives (December 8, 1863-December 5, 1875). McPherson presided over the Republican National Convention in 1876, and President Hayes appointed him as Director of the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing (1877-8). Bold signature..........40-60

When the diplomatic mission of Alexander Troyanovsky was completed, Umansky acted as chargé d'affaires of the embassy, when on 11 May 1939, Umansky was appointed by Joseph Stalin as Ambassador of the Soviet Union to the United States and he presented his Letters of Credence to U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt on 6 June 1939, becoming, at the time, the youngest Ambassador in Washington, D.C. TLS, 1943, as newly appointed Ambassador to Mexico. 192.  [ART] Richard Black is a highly regarded printmaker who has made a significant contribution over the years to the arts in Iowa. For thirty years he was a professor of art at Drake University where he founded the Drake University Biennial Print Symposium. The symposium brought nationally known artists to the state to demonstrate and lecture on the art of printmaking. Black himself has been the subject of a one-person exhibition at the Des Moines Art Center and has been honored with the DRAKE AWARD for excellence in teaching and artistic achievement. Black's works are included in many museum collections and have been shown in invitational and competitive exhibitions all over the country. Using the intaglio process, Black creates prints that have a collage-like feeling. Tightly rendered textures and color patches are layered and structured to create overall pattern. The work appears to be abstract, but when closely examined recognizable forms sometimes emerge. These images are enigmatic and are woven into the intricacy of the print, there for the viewer to decipher. 194. [FRANCE] Gaston Calmette (1858-1914) French journalist. In January 1914 Calmette, who had been editor of the newspaper Le Figaro since 1902, launched a campaign against Minister of Finance Joseph Caillaux, who had introduced progressive taxation and was known for his pacifist stance towards Germany during the Second Moroccan Crisis in 1911. During this campaign, which was orchestrated by Louis Barthou and Raymond Poincaré, Le Figaro published several letters from the Minister's private correspondence. Caillaux's second wife Henriette , fearing that the newspaper would also make public a love letter that showed how he was already having a relationship with her during his first marriage, entered Calmette's office on 16 March 1914 and shot him four times. Calmette died instantly. Caillaux had to resign his post the next day, but during a spectacular trial later that year his wife was acquitted. MARCEL PROUST dedicated Swann's Way, the first volume of his novel In Search of Lost Time, to Calmette 'as a testimony of deep and affectionate recognition'. [FRANCE] Louis-Antoine-Augustin Pavy  (1805-1866) was the second bishop of Algiers, from 25 February 1846 to 16 November 1866.  He erected, July 11, 1846, the hatch Staouëli an abbey and inaugurated on May 9, 1850, the first chapel of Notre-Dame de Santa Cruz in Oran. He started the construction of the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa in 1858.  He is also known for a famous sermon in the cathedral of Algiers during the Lent of 1853, on the relationship between Islam and Jesus Christ.  Two ALS, 1851 and 1853, both 1-page. 199. [FRANCE] Felix Dupanloup  (1802-1878) French ecclesiastic.  In 1825 he was ordained priest, and was appointed vicar of the Madeleine at Paris. For a time he was tutor to the Orléans princes. He became the founder of the celebrated academy at St Hyacinthe, and received a letter from Gregory XVI eulogizing his work there, and calling him Apostolus juventutis.  He was elected to the Académie française in 1854, occupying the thirty-eighth chair, becoming leader of the Academy’s "religious party", in which capacity he opposed the election of agnostic intellectuals. His imposing height, his noble features, his brilliant eloquence, as well as his renown for zeal and charity, made him a prominent feature in French life for many years. Crowds of persons attended his addresses, on whom his energy, command of language, powerful voice and impassioned gestures made a profound impression. When made bishop of Orléans in 1849, he pronounced a fervid panegyric on Joan of Arc, which attracted attention in England as well as France. Joan of Arc would later be canonized, due partly to Dupanloup's efforts. Before this, he had been sent by Archbishop Aifre to Rome, and had been appointed Roman prelate and protonotary apostolic.  For thirty years he remained a notable figure in France, doing his utmost to arouse his countrymen from religious indifference. He was a distinguished educationist who fought for the retention of the Latin classics in the schools and instituted the celebrated catechetical method of St Sulpice. He was the brother of actor James Cagney, and began his career in the film industry as an assistant producer at Warners as part of his brother's contract. Later he went on to head William Cagney Productions, a studio designed to promote James' career and give him more artistic opportunities. During the 1930s, William tried his hand at acting, and in 1950, played James's brother in "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye." Offered here is a typed Agreement with Samuel Goldwyn Productions concerning use of facilities for the filming of "A Lion Is In The Streets.'' Starting in 1895 Guest wrote a column in the Detroit Free Press, and his verse and sketches of a simple, colloquial quality won him a wide audience. The verse, "Home," beginning "It takes a heap o' livin' in a house t' make it home," was one of his earliest successes. She was the first woman to be elected to both the U.S. House and the Senate, and the first woman from Maine to serve in either. She was also the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for the U.S. Presidency at a major party's convention (1964 Republican Convention, won by Barry Goldwater). Smith was an early opponent of Senator Joseph McCarthy. On June 1, 1950, she gave her Declaration of Conscience speech on the floor of the Senate, earning McCarthy's permanent ire and the epithet "Moscow Maggie" from his staff. 213. Henry Martyn Hoyt, Jr. (1856- 1910) served as Solicitor General of the United States from 1903 to 1909. His father, also named Henry Martyn Hoyt, served as governor of Pennsylvania from 1879 to 1883. Hoyt  Jr. was born in Wilkes-Barre and graduated from Yale University in 1878 and the law school of the University of Pennsylvania in 1881. After a career spent in private practice as a lawyer in Pennsylvania, starting in Pittsburgh and then in banking he became an assistant attorney general in 1897 and then, in 1903, was appointed Solicitor General by Theodore Roosevelt. 217. [BRITAIN] Robert Brudenell, 6th Earl of Cardigan (1760-1837) succeeded to his title on 24 February 1811, following the death of his uncle James Brudenell, 5th Earl of Cardigan. Robert Brudenell was a keen cricketer who made eight known appearances in major cricket matches between 1790 and 1793. He was an early member of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), for whose team he played most of his matches [1]. Georg Bednorz, researchers at IBM Zurich laboratory, discovered that ceramics from a class of materials called perovskite were superconductors at a temperature of about 35 Kelvin. This event sparked great excitement in the world of physics and the discovery of the first of the superconducting ceramics won the 2 men a Nobel Prize the following year. 278. Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) American physicist, great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin, was born at Philadelphia. After graduating at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1825, he acted as assistant professor there for some time, and as a lieutenant in the corps of engineers he was engaged for a short time in the erection of coastal fortifications. He occupied the post of professor of natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1828 to 1841 and again from 1842 to 1843. He spent the years 1836 to 1838 in Europe on behalf of the trustees of what, in 1848, was to become Girard College. Abroad, he examined European systems of education and, on his return, published a very valuable report. In 1843, on the death of Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler, he was appointed superintendent of the United States coast survey. He succeeded in impressing the United States Congress with a sense of the great value of this work and by means of the liberal aid it granted, he carried out a singularly comprehensive plan with great ability and most satisfactory results. By a skillful division of labour, and by the erection of numerous observing stations, the mapping out of the whole coast was completed. 279. [ART] André Berne-Joffroy (1915-2007) Former Director of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Iimportant art critic in France. He was responsible for many of the important Paris exhibitions of modern art during the 1950-1980 era. He is also credited with the rediscovery of the Italian artist Michelangelo Caravaggio [1571-1610], who had a formative influence on the Baroque school of painting. Infamous while he lived, Caravaggio was forgotten almost immediately after his death, and it was only in the 20th century that his importance to the development of Western art was rediscovered. Despite this, his influence on the new Baroque style that eventually emerged from the ruins of Mannerism, was profound. 281. [RELIGION] Marie-Dominique-Auguste Sibour (1792-1857) French Catholic Archbishop of Paris. He held in 1849 a provincial council in Paris, and in 1850 a diocesan synod. In 1853 he officiated at the marriage of Napoleon III, who had named him senator the previous year. He also aimed at introducing the Roman Rite in Paris and was progressing favorably in this direction, when he was assassinated by an interdicted priest named Jean-Louis Verger, who openly admitted to the crime. He introduced histopathology and parasitology to the clinic, and originated the term biopsy for tissue samples. He was the first to describe the chronic skin changes of sarcoidosis, and gave it the name lupus pernio. He founded the medical journal Annales de dermatologie et de syphiligraphie with Pierre Adolphe Adrien Doyon . He attempted to balance the differences between the French and Viennese approaches to dermatological medicine, and in 1881 with Doyon, translated Moritz Kaposi's famous book on skin diseases (Pathologie und Therapie der Hautkrankheiten in Vorlesungen für praktische Ärzte und Studirende) from German into French (Leçons sur les maladies de la peau). 306. Sir Edward Thornton [1817-1906] English diplomat, son of Sir Edward Thornton [1766-1852] of the same occupation. He was born in London and was educated at King's College London, and at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He entered the diplomatic service as attaché to the mission at Turin in 1842, filled the same position in Mexico in 1845, and was made Secretary of Legation in that Capital in 1853. During 1848 he did much to forward the conclusion of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1852 he was appointed Secretary of Legation at Buenos Aires; chargé d'affaires to Uruguay (1854); Minister to the Argentine Republic in 1859, to Brazil in 1865, and from 1867 to 1881 to the United States. He was knighted in 1870; in 1871 was a member of the commission on the Alabama Claims, and was appointed Privy Councilor; and in 1873 was arbitrator in the commission on the Mexican and United States Claims. He was appointed Ambassador at St. Petersburg in 1881, Ambassador at Constantinople in 1884, and retired to private life in 1887. It was because of him that the Triple Alliance War (Argentina, Brasil and Uruguay against Paraguay) took place. From 1922 to 1939, Chase was a director of the New York-based Labor Bureau, Inc., an organization that furnished research, accounting, and other professional services to labor unions and cooperatives and published a newsletter.Chase and Frederick John Schlink were the founders of Consumers' Research. Schlink established Consumers' Research, Inc. They published the famous book Your Money's Worth(1927), a controversial exposé of the advertising and pricing practices used by manufacturers of consumer products. This work was widely distributed through the Book-of-the-Month Club In 1929, two months after the Wall Street crash, the organization began to publish its findings both as consumer pamphlets and in a regular bulletin that compared and assigned ratings to consumer products. These reports were eventually published in the Handbook of Buying. By 1930, membership in Consumers' Research, Inc. had reached twelve thousand.. 342. [NJ] Harold (Giles Hoffman) (1896-1954) Republican who served as the 41st Governor of New Jersey, from 1935 to 1938. He also served two terms representing New Jersey's 3rd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives, from 1927 to 1931. He is probably best known for being one of the most corrupt Governors of that State. As governor, Hoffman secretly visited convicted Lindbergh kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann in his death row cell on the evening of October 16, 1935 with Anna Bading, a stenographer and fluent speaker of German. Hoffman urged the other members of the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals , then the state's highest court, to visit Hauptmann. Despite Governor Hoffman's doubt regarding Hauptmann's guilt, Hoffman was unable to convince the other members of the Court to re-examine the case, and Hauptmann was executed on April 3, 1936. On March 18, 1954, Governor Robert B. Meyner uncovered a significant embezzlement scheme perpetrated by Hoffman, and suspended him from his position of Employment Security Division Director. Three months later, in June 1954, Hoffman died in a New York City hotel room of a heart attack. 355. Francis A. March (1825- 1911) American polymath, academic, philologist, and lexicographer. He is considered the principal founder of modern comparative linguistics in Anglo-Saxon. March applied the methods of studying the Latin and Greek classics towards the study of English literature, and led the way for the first scientific study of the English language. He graduated from Amherst College in 1845, and received a M.A. degree from Amherst in 1848. After studying law and teaching for three years, he became instructor at Lafayette College. March occupied the chair of English language and comparative philology at Lafayette College, in Easton, Pennsylvania, from 1857 to 1907. It was the first post of its kind. March was one of the first professors to advocate and teach English in colleges and universities. In addition to English, March also taught French, German, Greek, Latin, botany, "mental philosophy", political economy, the Constitution, and law. He also served as president of the American Philological Association (1873-1874; 1895-1896), the Spelling Reform Association (after 1876), and the Modern Language Association (1891-1893). Born in Fleury-les-Aubrais in Loiret, France, Carré studied at l'école Saint-Joseph and the collège Sainte-Croix de Neuilly before entering the Dominican order in 1926 and being ordained a priest in 1933. Not long thereafter, he was to edit, from 1936 until 1939, the Revue des Jeunes. Under the German Occupation, following the capitulation of the French government to the Nazis during the Second World War, Carré aided those persecuted by the Vichy government, regardless of their religion or ethnicity; for this, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur and the Croix de guerre. Both before and after the war, he preached many sermons and participated in conferences in France and abroad (especially in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, and Belgium). He preached the Lenten sermons many times at Notre Dame de Paris, and in 1964, Paul VI called him to present spiritual exercises at the Vatican. He was elected to the French Academy on 26 June 1975, replacing Jean Cardinal Daniélou, a post he held until his death on 15 January 2004 at Ancourt, in France. Hunter was known for producing what were considered "light" films starring actresses including Doris Day, Debbie Reynolds, and Julie Andrews. He was also known for melodramas such as Imitation of Life with Lana Turner and Airport. In the early 1970s, after flopping with the 1973 version of Lost Horizon, he worked for Paramount Pictures on a string of television movies. 433. Benjamin  Altman (1840–1913) American businessman who in 1865  founded B. Altman & Co., opening a store on Third Avenue and 10th Street in NYC. In 1906, he moved the business to Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. Benjamin Altman died without heirs. Shortly before the death, he founded the Altman Foundation. Until 1985, it owned B. In 1873 he entered the atelier of Jean-Léon Gérôme in the École des Beaux Arts at Paris, subsequently joining the classes of Carolus-Duran, with whom he remained until 1877. Returning to New York, he became a member of the Society of American Artists in 1878 and of the National Academy of Design in 1890. His pictures of New England types, and illustrations of John Keats, brought him into prominence. Subsequently he turned his attention to decoration, and executed panels and medallions for the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, a panel for the Essex County Court House in Newark, New Jersey as well as numerous panels for private residences and stained glass windows for various churches, including St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church, Newark. He was an instructor in the schools of Cooper Union , New York, during 1882 to 1885, and in the school of the National Academy of Design from 1889 to 1892. Low, who is known to a wider circle as the friend of R. L. Stevenson, published some reminiscences, A Chronicle of Friendships, 1873-1900 (1908). A mural by him is located in the Howard M. Metzenbaum U.S. Courthouse. Original auto-lithograph, plate signed, 12 x 8 flush. Autolithography means an original image made directly on the stone or plate. This is from a portfolio done for the American Artists' War Emergency Fund, one of the numerous war activities of the National Arts Club of New York, its object being to aid American Artist Soldiers or their dependents. [RELIGION]  Pierre Simon de Dreux-Breze  (1811-1893) Priest since 1825 , Vicar General and Canon Emeritus of Paris,  he distinguished himself as a preacher,  and was appointed Bishop of Moulins  October 28, 1849, by the President of the Republic   Called to Rome by Pope Pius IX on 7 January 1850,  it was dedicated to Our Lady of Paris on 14 April and took possession of his see on 1 May.
Near Dom Prosper Gueranger, he established the Roman rite in his diocese a pastoral letter by the 21 November 1853 and was a promoter of the Gregorian chant.  [internet translation].   ALS, not dated, 3 full pages, 5-1/4 x 8-1/4".  On the verso of page 3 is an ALS by Xavier de Ravignan  (1795-1858) French Jesuit preacher and author. Educated in Paris, he resigned his army commission to study law. Auditor of the royal court. Deputy attorney-general by 1821. Entering a Sulpician monastery, and later joining the Society of Jesus, he was ordained in 1828, and after several years as professor and retreat preacher at Montrouge, he went to Notre Dame, where his logic, serenity, and zeal won souls by the hundreds. Superior of his brethren at Bordeaux from 1837 to 1842, and at Paris from 1848 to 1851. He preached throughout France and in Rome, Belgium, and London. His calm, eloquent De l'Existence et de l'Institut des Jesuites of 1844, vindicating the Society, sold 25,000 copies in one year. However, the Jesuits' strife continued until they were forced to disband for a time in France.  Despite painful controversy with his superiors and imputations from other quarters, he remained loyal to his order. In 1854 he brought out Clement XIII et Clement XIV, a dispassionate treatise, of no great literary merit, on the defender and the suppressor of the Jesuits. He steadfastly refused preferment, even the archbishopric of Paris, devoting himself to other works. He died a saintly death, and thousands followed the remains of the "Apostle of Paris" to his grave. VG..........200-300

He also suffered from mental illness, dying in an asylum. His most famous work is a series of views of Paris. Offered here "Le Ministère de la Marine" (The Admiralty, Paris), photogravure 1926 of his etching [1865].  These superb photogravures, there were 20 printed in 1926, are often sold as etchings. You see them all the time offered at around $400 to $800 each. The sellers, obviously are not aware of what they are offering. The original 1865 etching retailed at $1500. 489. David Lawrence (1888-1973) conservative newspaperman and former student of Woodrow Wilson at Princeton University. In 1916, he became the Washington correspondent of the New York Evening Post. After his reelection as U.S. President in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson fired Irish-American White House secretary (chief of staff) Joseph Patrick Tumulty in 1916 to placate anti-Catholic sentiment, particularly from his wife and his advisor Colonel Edward M. House, after which David Lawrence successfully interceded on his behalf to remain. During the presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, David Lawrence criticised 'The New Deal' in his 1932 book Beyond the New Deal, in which his observation of economic activity led him to distinguish between free enterprise and corporatism, writing that "Theoretically, corporations are creations of the state." In 1926, Lawrence founded United States Daily, a weekly newspaper devoted to covering government, and seven years later shut it down to start United States News for an audience of community leaders, business people and politicians. In 1948, United States News merged with Lawrence's two-year-old weekly magazine, World Report to form the news magazine U.S. News & World Report. At the time of Lawrence's 1973 death, the magazine had a circulation of two million. On April 22, 1970, David Lawrence was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard Nixon.
