9. [ART]
WALT
KUHN
(1877-1949), American
painter. After
studying in many
European countries, he
helped organize the
famous Armory Show
(International
Exhibition of Modern
Art, New York City,
1913). He is noted
chiefly for his
vigorous studies of
circus performers,
chorines, and trapeze
athletes. His Blue
Clown (1931, Whitney
Museum, New York City)
is the most popular
example of his work.
He also did a number
of brilliant still
lifes, as well as
designs for musical
reviews. Kuhn helped
introduce the
techniques and
theories of modern art
to the American public
and to many American
artists. Offered here
are twenty-seven
handwritten
letters-
twenty-five [25]
letters are from
1943, one is
1940 & the last is
1948, the year before
Walt died. Most are
two pages on 8 x 11
in. sheets. The
majority of the
letters were written
from Ogunquit,
Maine where the Kuhn's
owned a home with a
studio. At the end of
1948 he had a nervous
breakdown. In some of
his letters he starts
to wonder about his
mental abilities.
Walts' letters run the
gamut of
town gossip to art
gossip mentioning
names of artists who
summered in Ogunquit,
war activity near
Ogunquit off Boone
Island, descriptions
of the areas where he
paints, his feelings
about tourists, how
his painting is going,
his art patrons and
dealers. A Colliers
article about Walts'
paintings is mentioned
in a few letters and a
copy of the article
goes with the group.
One letter is
answering a question
from a Chicago woman
about a version of the
1913 Armory Show held
there. The only

25. [FILM] Norma Zarky (1917-1977)
was a prominent lawyer in Los Angeles, active in the fight
for abortion rights and other civil rights. She then worked
for a number of lawyers, including Joseph L. Rauh, Jr., a
prominent civil rights lawyer, and for Arthur Goldberg. She
co-authored a number of briefs with Rauh on civil rights
cases during the 1950s. In 1954, during the McCarthy Era,
the Department of Justice sought to fire Hilbert Zarky from
his position with the Department, based primarily on Norma’s
very brief involvement with Communism when she was an
undergraduate in the mid-1930s, along with such “crimes” as
their belonging to a liberal book club and being at meetings
attended by “suspect” individuals. After she and her husband
filed numerous declarations from friends and prominent
individuals regarding their loyalty to the United States, he
was reinstated to his position. In 1961 joined
the law firm of Mitchell, Silberberg and Knupp,
becoming the firm’s first woman partner in 1968. At
Mitchell, Silberberg and Knupp, she practiced primarily in
the field of entertainment law. Zarky was the first woman to
serve as President of the Beverly Hills Bar Association and
was a founding member of Women in Film. She was
influential in establishing Public Counsel, which is
now “the largest pro bono public interest law firm in the
world.” She also was active in the Constitutional
Rights Foundation. She was also a founder of
California Women Lawyers. Zarky was particularly active in
the fight for legalized abortion. She was “one of the two
leading California attorneys” strategizing the legal
battles. She authored the ACLU’s amicus brief in People v.
Belous, in which the California Supreme Court upheld a
woman’s right to abortion. She then wrote an amicus
brief on behalf of the American Association of University
Women in Roe v. Wade, the case that established the right to
abortion on a nationwide basis. In 1979, Women in Film
established The Norma Zarky Humanitarian Award, which “is
presented to individuals who, like Ms. Zarky herself, have
demonstrated enlightened support for the advancement of
equal opportunity for all and devotion to the improvement of
the human condition.” Lengthy TLS, 1965, 1p, to Milt
Ebbins, Chrislaw productions, about Bill Asher, mentioning
the film JOHNNY COOL and The Patty Duke Show.
Bill Asher (1921-2012) was one of the most
prolific early television directors, producing or directing
over two dozen series. With television in its infancy, Asher
introduced the sitcom Our Miss Brooks, which was adapted
from a radio show. He began directing I Love Lucy by 1952.
In 1964, he produced and directed Bewitched, which starred
his then-wife Elizabeth Montgomery. As a result of his early
success, Asher was considered an "early wunderkind of
TV-land," and is credited in one magazine article for
'inventing' the sitcom. Included here is a carbon copy
of another letter plus a copy of a contract with William
Asher. VG..........75-100

31. [FRANCE] Nicolas Le Camus de Mezieres (1721-1789) French architect and theoretician. He was born and died in Paris. He published several works on architectural and related subjects, including Architecture of Expression, and The Theatre of Desire at the End of the Ancien Régime; Or, The Analogy of Fiction with Architectural Innovation. Le Camus developed a theory of architecture in which the character of a building should express its destination or the social status of its client. Unlike previous character theories in architecture, Le Camus's theory was based on an explicit analogy between architecture and theatre. His architectural mode of expression followed a temporal progression similar to the dramatic unfolding of a play, and gradations in ornamentation throughout the interior of a building resembled a succession of stage sets in a theatrical performance. 37. [KENTUCKY] SAML. PATTON (b. 1757)
was a sergeant in the American revolution; served under
General Anthony Wayne [1776-78] in Penn. Regiment and fought
at Battle of Brandywine. Document Signed, Hardin Co.,
Kentuckym 1805, 1p, 11-1/2 x 12-1/4 in. Difficult to see
but also signed Wm. Bush [below Patton signature] although we
believe that Patton signed for both. Never the
less, William Bush is mentioned along with Patton.
WILLIAM BUSH [born 1763] the eldest son of Christopher and
Hannah Bush, built a large 2-story house on his farm located
near what is today known as the Tunnel Hill Road, off present
Bardstown Road; it still stands, with the Bush family burial
ground nearby, where over 70 members of the Bush family are
buried. His sister, Sarah, married Thomas Lincoln after the
death of Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He grew up and worked at various
jobs and acquired land like his parents. In 1794 he married
Elizabeth Rhodes. Kentucky became a state in 1792, but the
legal problems of William Bush began much earlier. Although
prosperous, he was frequently entangled in lawsuits. His
reputation was guarded and he did not enjoy the respect
accorded other members of the Bush family. Bush didn’t
hesitate to charge others - and was accused himself of
criminal trespass. Thomas Lincoln was known to be
anti-slavery, and as a young boy Abraham probably observed
slaves being taken in chains to Southern markets, on the road
beside his home. In October of 1798, William Bush filed suit
against J. McCreey for uncollected debt after the delivery of
four slaves sold to him by Bush. History books have not dwelt
on the cantankerous nature of the President’s uncle by
marriage, William Bush, let alone the fact that there
was a slave-trader in the family. Excellent

42. [ACADEMY AWARDS] John W. Boyle
(1891-1959) also credited as John Boyle was an American
cinematographer whose career spanned from the silent era
through the 1950s. Over his career he would photograph more
than 150 films, including features, shorts and documentaries.
He would also work on several British films over the course of
his career. Born in Memphis, Tennessee he would enter the film
industry in 1915, when he shot three films, Greater Love Hath
No Man, Her Great Match, and My Madonna. In 1917 he would
photograph the silent classic, Cleopatra, starring Theda Bara.
The film is on the American Film Institute's "Ten Most Wanted"
list of lost American classics. J. Gordon Edwards helmed
the film, and the two would work together on 22 other films
over the following twelve years, including such classics as
Salomé and When a Woman Sins, both again starring Bara, and
The Queen of Sheba, starring Betty Blythe. During his
long career, he would film over 70 feature films, both in the
United States and Great Britain, several documentaries (one of
which, Sweden, Land of the Vikings (1934), he would also
produce). Beginning in 1928, Boyle would also begin to
work on film shorts, many of which would be produced by Mack
Sennett through 1933. Boyle would serve as the president
of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) from
1928-29. Offered

45. [ART] Henry Scott Tuke RA RWS (1858-1929)
English visual artist; primarily a painter, but also a
photographer. His most notable work was in the Impressionist
style, and he is probably best known for his paintings of nude
boys and young men. Tuke became an established artist and was
elected to full membership of the Royal Academy in 1914. Tuke
suffered a heart attack in 1928 and died in March, 1929. Towards
the end of his life Tuke knew that his work was no longer
fashionable. In his will he left generous amounts of money to
some of the men who, as boys, had been his models. Today he is
remembered mainly for his oil paintings of young men, but in
addition to his achievements as a figurative painter, he was an
established maritime artist and produced as many portraits of
sailing ships as he did human figures. ALS, 1908, 1p, 7

the Civil War, he took part in the New Orleans campaign,
before commanding the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron,
covering the coastlines and inland waters of Virginia and
North Carolina, and finally the Mississippi River Squadron. As
a cousin of Robert E. Lee, his refusal to join the
Confederates demonstrated the extent to which the war had
divided families. Lee married the daughter of Francis P.
Blair, Sr., and their house in Washington is now the

55. Original 1797 engraved portrait of
James Nalton (1600?–1662) the English Presbyterian minister,
known as "the weeping prophet". Nalton was born about
1600, the son of a London minister. In 1642 Nalton
signed a petition addressed to Lord Dunsmore respecting the
appointment of a master to Rugby grammar school. It was
rejected, and apparently caused him to leave Rugby. He
subsequently acted as chaplain to Colonel Grantham's regiment;
and then about 1644 he was appointed incumbent of St.
Leonard's, Foster Lane, London. There he remained, with a
short interval, until his death. On 29 April 1646 he preached
before the House of Commons at St. Margaret's, Westminster, on
The Delay of Reformation provoking God's further Indignation
(London, 1646), his fellow preacher on this occasion being
John Owen. He was called the "weeping prophet" because "his
seriousness often expressed itself by tears". In
1651 Nalton was indirectly concerned in Christopher Love's
plot, and had to take refuge in Holland. For a short period
one of the ministers of the English Church at Rotterdam; but
he returned to England by permission at the end of six months,
and resumed his work at St. Leonard's until he was ejected in
1662. He died in December of that year, and was buried on 1
January 1663. His funeral sermon, entitled Rich Treasure in
Earthen Vessels, was preached by Thomas Horton. Nalton was the
first signatory of the preface to Jeremiah Burroughes's
Saint's Treasury, 1654, and himself published separate
sermons. Twenty of these, with a eulogistic preface and a
portrait engraved by John Chantrey, were issued by Matthew
Poole, London, 1677. The engraved portrait dated 1797 offered
here appears to be the same portrait done in 1677 by Chantrey,
possibly pulled from the same plate??? Image is about 3-1/4 x

[ART] Walt Kuhn
(1877-1949) American painter and an organizer of the famous
Armory Show of 1913, which was America's first large-scale
introduction to European Modernism. Rare b/w print pulled
directly from the original block. The block was made for a
1935 Kuhn family Christmas card. During the 1930s up until
around 1940, the Kuhn family sent out cards printed from the
blocks that were hand-colored by Walt Kuhn and Brenda
[daughter]. It is unknown how much watercoloring that each did
on all those cards. In later years, Brenda had photo-mechanical
reproductions made, which she herself hand-colored and sent out.
One of those hand-colored [by Brenda] reproductions of this 1932
print is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian
Institute. Over the years we've noticed that these Christmas
cards have been sold as original watercolors. To be more
specific - those Christmas cards could technically be described
as watercolors although since it is known how much of the
coloring was done by Walt himself it seems a little misleading
to call those prints watercolors by Walt Kuhn. The black &
white print offered here was pulled about 10 years ago by Merv
from the original block which we own. To be sure Merv will be
pulling more prints in the future. Image approx. 5-1/4 x 7-1/2

61. [COLONIAL] Nathaniel Folsom
(1726-1790) American merchant and statesman. He was a
delegate for New Hampshire in the Continental Congress in 1774
and 1777 to 1780, as well as the Major General of the New
Hampshire Militia. Folsom was born into a large family
in Exeter, New Hampshire. His ancestors were among Exeter's
earliest settlers, having arrived with the Gilman family, to
whom they were related, from Hingham, Massachusetts, where
both families settled for a time before moving on to New
Hampshire. When Folsom's father died, in January
1740, the thirteen-year-old went to work for a merchant. He
invested in timber and opened a saw-mill. Then in 1761, he
went into business with some distant cousins, Joseph and
Josiah Gilman. They became Folsom, Gilman & Gilman and
opened a general store, built ships, and carried on an
import/export business. The firm operated in Exeter and
Portsmouth. Though the partners went their separate ways in
1768, Folsom continued in foreign commerce, timber, and lumber
operations for the rest of his life. Folsom joined the
militia as did most young men. During the French and Indian
War he was Captain of a company in the New Hampshire
Provincial Regiment during the Crown Point expedition led by
Sir William Johnson in 1755. At the Battle of Lake George, his
company, supported by artillery from Massachusetts surprised
and captured Baron Dieskau, the French commander-in-chief.
Besides capturing the Baron, they dispersed the French troops,
took the French baggage train and seized a critical mass of
supplies, with the loss of only six men. Folsom went on to
become a colonel in the militia. His formal commission was
revoked by Governor Wentworth after the raid on Fort William
and Mary in December 1774. Disregarding this, Colonel Folsom
marched his regiment to Portsmouth, and escorted the captured
cannons safely back to Durham. On May 29, 1775, the
Provincial Congress named him a Brigadier General in command
of New Hampshire's forces. This created some confusion, as the
Massachusetts provisional government had named John Stark to
the same position. At the time, Colonel Stark was the senior
commander of the New Hampshire men who had marched to the
Siege of Boston. The confusion was resolved in June, when the
Continental Congress named John Sullivan General of those New
Hampshire forces in service with the Continental Army. Folsom
was the senior officer for militia forces within the state. He
was later named a Major General, and continued recruiting,
training, and supply efforts throughout the war. Folsom
had served several years as moderator of the town meetings at
Exeter. When a revolutionary Assembly, the Provincial
Congress, first met on July 21, 1774, he was a delegate. The
Provincial Congress, in turn named him their delegate to the
first Continental Congress that met in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. In 1775, Folsom continued his service in
the provincial congress, as he would do until 1783. He became
a close political ally of Meshech Weare and Josiah Bartlett,
as he was named to the New Hampshire Committee of Safety. In
January 1776, he also became a justice in the Rockingham
County court of common pleas. In 1777 and 1779 he was also
returned to his old post as a delegate to the Continental
Congress. In 1783 he became the chief judge in the
common pleas court. That same year he went to, and presided
over, the state's constitutional convention. When a
constitution was adopted, as president of the convention, he
wrote a cover letter, then forwarded it to the towns for
ratification. Ironically, one problem addressed by the
constitution was to limit the number of offices held by one
man. Folsom resigned from the Assembly, and as head of the
militia, and from the Governor's Council. Offered

66. [THEATRE] HELEN BLYTHE - American actress. Dramatic instinct was precociously developed. At the age of five she was introduced to the public in children's roles by Clara Morris at Norwalk, Ohio, and six years later made her appearance in Richard III. She was born at Fairfield, Ohio, 1861, and had made quite a reputation when she secured her first regular engagement at the Cincinnati Grand Opera House. Her real name is Blye, but an early mistake in the play bills to Blythe was never changed. She made steady headway, and became a great favorite in all the principal cities of the United States and Canada. Her dramatic methods are of the newer school, and her real strength lies in those more human impersonations which the genius of the modern playwright and the favor of the public have given a prominent position on our stage. Her husband is Joseph F. Brien. They were married in 1880. Unsigned cabinet photograph, 4-1/4 x 6-1/2 in. Pin hole at top & bottom edge............50-75

78. An 1801
Kentucky Pioneer document from Elizabethtown, Hardin
County, Kentucky. promisory note signed by several
prominent pioneers. Signed on the front by Charles Helm
and George Helm. Charles
HELM [1777- 1831 [?] - a merchant,
politician, soldier. He served for many years in the
state legislature and was said to be the most popular
man in Hardin County. During the War of 1812, he was in
Col. Aaron Hart’s company, a mounted force, each man
furnishing his own horse, gun, ammunition, & rations
for himself & horse. He served for a number of years
in the Kentucky State Senate and House of
Representatives. GEO. HELM
(1774-1822) signs on the verso. In 1798 he was appointed
sheriff of Hardin County; was in the State Legislature
1813, 1814 and 1816. Resigned temporarily in 1814 to
serve on the staff of General John Thomas, who commanded
the Kentucky troops at the Battle of New Orleans. His
son became Governor of Kentucky. Geo. Helm was involved
briefly in the following incident. In Elizabethtown the
first execution took slave April 2, 1796. Jacob, a
slave, killed his master John Crow in Dec. 1795. He fled
to Vienna, but was captured and returned to
Elizabethtown. Tried by a special court, he was
condemned to be hanged. When Jacob was arrested he said,
"I killed Crow, but you prove it." He pleaded guilty
though, and was sentenced to be hung. The court not
agreeing on the value of the negro, a jury was impaneled
who fixed his value at 80 pounds. Confined in an old log
jail, he made a desperate dash when the door was opened
to feed him. George Helm, being in sight, and being then
a stout young man, pursued the prisoner about 400 yards,
crossing Valley Creek & ascending a hill, caught
& brought Jacob back. The execution was witnessed by
a large crowd. The Sheriff having a distaste for the
hangman's office [by consent of Jacob] procured the
services of a black man to tie the noose and drive the
cart from under. For years after the matter was spoken
as "The time Jacob was hung." SIGNED ON THE VERSO BY Squire Larue, James Crutcher,
Ben Helm, & Michael Campbell.
In 1813 Hardin County had the unique distinction of
having two future presidents of the United States living
within its borders: Abraham Lincoln, a boy of four
years, and James Buchanan, then a young man of 22 years.
Buchanan, in 1796, became part owner with James Dickey,
of 3610 acres of land in Hardin County, purchased for
one dollar per acre from Michael Campbell.SQUIRE LaRUE
[1785-1861] the only son of John LaRue, for whom LaRue
County was named. He was a Lincoln neighbor who’s son
was born the day before Abraham Lincoln. His mother,
Mary Brooks LaRue Enlow, was present at the birth of
Squire LaRue’s son, and she was very close to the
Lincolns. Legend tells us that she walked the short
distance to the Lincoln cabin and was
“Granny-mother” at the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Squire
LaRue served in the General Assembly of Kentucky and was
also County Judge of Hardin County. MAJOR JAS. CRUTCHER -
Pioneer. Came to Kentucky from Virginia with his father
& family, arriving at the Falls of the Ohio in early
1780s, and later moved to Bardstown. In 1796, he moved
to Elizabethtown and became one of the earliest
merchants there. Served terms in the legislature and
came close to being elected lieutenant governor. He was
at the battle of New Orleans as aide to General Thomas,
commander of the Kentucky troops. He was involved in the
flatboat business and it was said that after delivering
a cargo by flatboat to New Orleans, Crutcher would walk
back to Kentucky. On these trips he carried his money in
a close fitting deer skin vest which he wore under his
shirt. BEN HELM (1767-1858)
known as "Kitchen Knife Whetted on a Brick." He was a
surveyor, state senator, clerk of Hardin Co. courts;
major in War of 1812; purchased the farm owned by
Christopher Bush, father of Mrs. Sallie [Bush] Johnston
Lincoln, step-mother of Abraham Lincoln. He was a
partner, in the general store business, with Duff Green
[later statesman] in the early frontier days of
Kentucky. It is likely that young Abe Lincoln visited
his store often in his early youth.

(1779-1848), usually addressed as Lord Melbourne, was
a British Whig statesman who served as Home Secretary

He is best known for his intense and successful
mentoring of Queen Victoria, at ages 18–21, in the
ways of politics. Historians conclude that Melbourne
does not rank high as a prime minister, for there were
no great foreign wars or domestic issues to handle, he
lacked major achievements, and he enunciated no grand
principles. "But he was kind, honest, and not
self-seeking." Melbourne was dismissed by the
King William IV in 1834, the last British Prime

173. [MUSIC- THEATRE] Gertrude "Gertie" Millar (later Countess of Dudley) (1879-1952) English actress and singer of the early 20th century, known for her performances in Edwardian musical comedies. Beginning her career at age 13, Millar was a prominent star of musical comedies for two decades. She married composer Lionel Monckton, who composed many of her shows and songs that she made famous. After Monckton died in 1924, Millar married the 2nd Earl of Dudley. As a child, Millar performed in London pantomimes, beginning with Babes in the Wood at the St. James Theatre in Manchester, at the age of 13. She started out as a singer and dancer in the music halls of Yorkshire. Later, she moved to London where she was soon earning good notices and better pay appearing in variety show bills. By 1897, she was playing the role of Phyllis Crosby in A Game of Cards at Shodfriars Hall, Boston, England. Next she toured in The New Barmaid in the role of Dora; in The Silver Lining; and as Sadie Pinkhose, the "other woman", in The Lady Detective. In 1899, she played Dandini in Cinderella at the Grand Theatre, Fulham. In the new century, she starred in a series of hit musical comedies produced by George Edwardes. In 1900, she played Isabel Blythe in the touring production of The Messenger Boy. Edwardes's next show was The Toreador in 1901 at the Gaiety Theatre in London. Lionel Monckton, one of the show's composers, had seen Millar in The Messenger Boy and requested that she be given the role of the bridesmaid Cora in the new musical, singing "Keep Off the Grass". She made the song popular and earned a second song, "Captivating Cora", and a third, "I'm not a simple little girl". These hits, and her featured role in A Country Girl (1902), established Millar in London. The Gaiety Theatre closed for renovations in 1902, and the last show at the old theatre was The Linkman; or, Gaiety Memories. Millar starred as Morgiana. She married Monckton in 1902, and he continued to write hit songs for her in subsequent shows. Millar became one of the most photographed women of the Edwardian period. She had top billing as the Hon. Violet Anstruther in The Orchid, the show that opened the new Gaiety (1903; introducing the songs "Little Mary", "Liza Ann", and "Come with me to the zoo"). She starred as Rosalie in The Spring Chicken (1905; singing "Alice sit by the fire" and "The Delights of London") and as Lally in The New Aladdin (1906). She next starred as Mitzi in The Girls of Gottenberg (1907; singing the duet "Two Little Sausages", with Edmund Payne, and the Wagnerian parody "Rhinegold"). Soon afterwards, Edwardes cast her as Franzi at the Hicks Theatre in the English-language production of Ein Walzertraum (A Waltz Dream, 1908) by Oscar Straus. Although Millar was able to sell the light musical comedy songs composed for her at the Gaiety, Oscar Straus's music was too demanding for her small voice, and she was sent to New York to star in the Broadway production of The Girls of Gottenberg. After she returned to London, some of Millar's biggest successes were still in front of her. They included the title role of the hit Gaiety musical, Our Miss Gibbs (1909), with Millar introducing the songs "Moonstruck", "Yorkshire", and "Our farm", all written for her by Monckton. Monckton and Millar then moved to Edwardes' newest theatre, the Adelphi, where she played the title role, Prudence Pym, in another international hit, The Quaker Girl (1910). In this, she popularised the songs "The Quaker Girl", "The Little Grey Bonnet", and "Tony from America". After this, she returned to continental operetta, playing Lady Babby in Edwardes's English language version of Franz Lehár's Zigeunerliebe (Gipsy Love, 1912) at Daly's Theatre . In this role, the musical demands were light and the show was a moderate success. She returned to the Adelphi to play Nancy Joyce in The Dancing Mistress (1912), and back at Daly's she played Kitty Kent in The Marriage Market (1913). This was followed by the role of Nan in a major revival of A Country Girl (1914). She also played Sallie Denbigh in The House of Bondage, a 1914 film. SIGNED postcard size photograph from the play "The Girls of Gottenberg", dated 1908. Approx. 3-1/8 x 5-1/4". VG.........50-75

183. [ART] Richard Carline (1896-1980 ) Painter, writer and administrator, Carline was born in Oxford. His father, George Carline, his mother, Anne, and brother Sydney, his sister Hilda (Mrs Stanley Spencer) and his wife, Nancy, were all painters. Carline in 1913 attended Percyval Tudor-Hart's Academie de Peinture, in Paris. After a short period teaching, Carline served in World War I and was appointed an Official War Artist. With his brother he became noted for war pictures from the air. He was elected LG in 1920, at which time the Carlines' Hampstead home became a centre for artists such as Henry Lamb, John Nash and Mark Gertler. During this period Carline was clearly influenced by Stanley Spencer, transforming everyday scenes into something monumental. Carline achieved this, however, without exaggerating form or gestures to the degree that Spencer did. Between 1924 and 1929 Carline taught at the Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford. He had his first solo show at Goupil Gallery in 1931. The mid-1930s saw Carline involved in Negro art, organising a show at Adams Gallery in 1935, and contributing the main text to Arts of West Africa, edited by Michael Sadler. During World War II Carline supervised camouflage of factories and airfields. He was involved in AIA, helping to found the Hampstead Artists' Council in 1944. In 1946-47 he was appointed as the first Art Counsellor to UNESCO, and from 1955 to 1974 was chief examiner in art for the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. His books include Pictures in the Post: the Story of the Picture Postcard, 1959; Draw They Must, 1968; and Stanley Spencer at War, 1978. In 1975 the D'Offay Gallery held a Richard Carline exhibition for which the artist wrote the foreword. Carline died in Hampstead and in 1983 Camden Arts Centre organised a memorial exhibition. The Imperial War Museum holds his work, including the outstanding and pioneering series of paintings, from World War I, based on observations made from aeroplanes. Offered here is a lengthy ALS, 1970, written to the artist, Dr. Frederick Solomon (1899-1980) German Expressionist artist who died in New Hampshire USA. Solomon won the Mowbray Prize [1944] in London; was listed in WHO'S WHO IN ART [1954 London edition]. He studied art with such famous German artist's as: Max Liebermann, Martin Brandenburg, Eugene Spiro & Willy Jaeckel [Masterclass]. Exhibitions: Berlin, Cologne, Capetown, Haifa, London [Royal Academy], U.S., and in 1958 had one-man show at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba. In 1956 several of his paintings were exhibited at the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio. The letter shows that Carline and Solomon were longtime friends. Fine condition. by 1871. He was a Liberal politician who sat in the House of
Commons from 1885 to 1900 as the MP for Whitechapel, a poor
district of the East End of London. In 1907, Montagu was raised
to the peerage as Baron Swaythling. She grew up in a pious
Orthodox Jewish home, in an ethos of privilege and philanthropy,
devoted to helping the poor and advancing Jewish institutions.
Her eldest brother, Louis, was also a financier and political
activist, founding the League of British Jews to lobby against
the creation of the state of Israel. In 1893 she founded

Judaism in the UK and helped found the World Union for

Montagu served for a brief stint (1955–1959) in her 80s as

following are from the papers of the American physicist
Louis W. McKeehan (1887-1975) Director of the Physics
Laboratories Yale. He took leave of his teaching position
to help out with the war effort. He was the driving force
behind the creation of the torpedo called Fido. Capt.
Louis McKeehan, head of the Mine Warfare Branch of the
Bureau of Ordnance. Scientists at the Naval Torpedo
Station at Newport, Rhode Island had been considering
acoustic homing torpedoes for fifteen years but insisted
that torpedoes made too much noise themselves to be able
to home on any external noise source and until McKeehan
came along to challenge them they seemed to have a point.
But McKeehan was not a career naval officer. He was a
reserve officer, on active duty for the duration, whose
peacetime job was director of the physics laboratories at
Yale University. Unimpressed by the received wisdom of
Navy engineers, McKeehan turned to HUSL and BTL where his
idea for an acoustic homing torpedo quickly bore fruit.
With support and funding from the NDRC, HUSL and BTL
proved Newport wrong and only seventeen months after the
beginning of the project Fido had entered service and made
his first kill. After the war, the scientists at Bell Labs
who had worked on Fido returned to telephone work, Captain
McKeehan returned to Yale, and Harvard - like some other
universities - anxious to shed the military connection as
soon as possible took back its buildings and ended its
classified work. Louis McKeehan was, among other things,
author of Yale Science: The First Hundred Years, 1701-1801
(New York: H. Schuman, 1947). Offered here are several
pieces. Includes: 1940 letter to his wife Grace [scan 1];
a 1932 Naval Reserve Fitness document signed by McKeehan
[scan 2]; an interesting 1940 document pencil signed by
McKeehan [scan 3]; plus 5 other pieces, all showing

[BUSINESS ARCHIVE] Approx. 78 letters, mostly TLSs,
1907-1908, from Dudley Watson Moor [b. 1836 - ?], mostly
to Edward W. Heath of Waterville, Maine. Contents -
business matters. Harvard University holds some of
Moor's business papers - here is how they are described:
"This collection also contains the business papers of
Dudley Watson Moor (1836-1900) and Edward W. Heath,
whose connection to the Smith family is unclear. Moor
and Heath apparently dealt in real estate in Maine in
the late 19th and early 20th century. They also appear
to have been involved in the corporate business of the
Somerset and Kennebec Company, which seems to have been
a cardboard and box-making factory. There are also
papers related to the operation of the Kennebec Fibre
Company, a paper mill on the Kennebec River. The
collection also includes family papers of the Heath
family, dealing with the estate of Edward's father,
Wyman Heath, and with Francis E. Heath, Edward's brother
and a commanding officer of the 19th Maine Infantry
during the Civil War." We know from the letters offered
here that Harvard's year of death for Moor [1900] is not
correct, and that he lived at least until 1908. Mostly
good to VG..........100-150

EBBINS (1912-2008) talent
manager of jazz greats and a Kennedy administration and
Rat Pack insider, composer. Ebbins started his
career in the early 1930s as a trumpet player and
bandleader. He left his career as bandleader and became
a talent manager, rising to become one of Hollywood’s
top personal managers, guiding the careers of Count
Basie, Sarah Vaughn, Billy Eckstine and singer Vic
Damone. Because of Ebbins’ musical background and his
adeptness at arranging scores, he had a knack for
picking hit songs for his clients. He also represented
actresses Elizabeth Montgomery and Patty Duke, comedian
Mort Sahl and actor Peter Lawford, who Ebbins managed
for 35 years. Ebbins’ partnership with Lawford — who was
married to President Kennedy’s sister, Patricia— brought
him into close association with The Rat Pack and the
Kennedy Clan. Ebbins produced many of his clients’
film and television projects and was partnered in a
company with Lawford that produced TV series, “The Patty
Duke Show.” He associate produced the 1950s TV series’
“The Thin Man” starring Lawford and Phyllis Kirk. He
also produced two films starring Rat Packers Lawford and
Sammy Davis Jr. — “Salt and Pepper” (1968) and “One More
Time” (1970). He helped set up the original Rat Packer
film, “Ocean’s Eleven” and subsequently “Sergeants 3.”
He was also involved in the production of “The Longest
Day.” Ebbins helped produce JFK’s 1961 Inaugural
Ball and the subsequent 1962 JFK Anniversary Gala. In
May of 1962, Ebbins escorted a very late Marilyn Monroe
to Madison Square Garden where she famously — and
breathlessly — sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President.” He
was also the man that Lawford called after speaking to
Monroe the night of her death in August of 1962. Ebbins
was one of the few allowed inside the White House after
the JFK assassination. As the link between Washington
and Hollywood, Ebbins helped Kennedy family patriarch
and former ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy navigate through
the movie business, not only keeping him apprised of his
son-in-law’s career moves but at one point advising him
against purchasing United Artists’ movie studio. At the
time of his death, Ebbins was working with his friend,
actor Bill Paxton, on an HBO project about the Kennedy
assassination. Offered here, from the Ebbins
Estate, is a signed contract AGREEMENT BETWEEN
Ebbins and the American Society of Composers,
Authors & Publishers, dated Oct. 6, 1965. Ebbins
has signed in ink on page 3, the other signature is
printed. VG.............60-80

258. [OPERA] John M. Wieting M.D. (1817-1888) physician and medical lecturer. He is perhaps best known for his Wieting Opera House, considered a "world class" cultural institution. Originally, a building called Wieting Hall, which was a lecture hall, was built at 100 West Water Street at the corner of South Salina Street in 1852 and was lost to fire in 1856. The building was rebuilt and reopened in 1870 as the Wieting Opera House and had a seating capacity of 1,017. The first opera that took place in the house, however, did not occur until 1886 when the American Opera Company made a brief appearance. In fact, opera was never intended as the main venue in the theater. At that time, towns throughout America had opera houses where operas were seldom or never performed. The "opera house" designation simply provided a respectable cover for places that presented a variety of popular entertainments. Oftentimes they were called "museums." ALS, Bromfield House, 1854, 1p. One of America's Earliest Western Singing Groups
365. [MUSIC] The Sons of the Pioneers are one of America's earliest Western singing groups whose classic recordings set a new standard for performers of Western music. Known for the high quality of their vocal performances, musicianship, and songwriting, they produced finely-crafted and innovative recordings that have inspired many Western music performers and remained popular through the years. Since 1933, through many changes in membership, the Sons of the Pioneers have remained one of the longest-surviving country music vocal groups in history. Between 1935 and 1984, the Sons of the Pioneers appeared in 87 films, several movie shorts, and a television series. In 1937, the Sons Of The Pioneers signed a deal with Columbia Pictures to appear in a number of movies. In 1938, Leonard Slye was offered a contract as an actor with rival Republic Pictures. Part of that deal required him to officially leave the group. Leonard Slye changed his name to Roy Rogers, and went on to achieve major success as a singing cowboy in the movies. Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers still remained close throughout the coming years. When their contract with Columbia Pictures ended, they signed a new contract with Republic Pictures to be with Roy. They were soon appearing as highly popular supporting players in many of Roy Rogers' movies. Rare Signed vintage vintage 8x10 photograph. SIGNED on the front by Pat Brady & Hugh Farr. document from Hardin Co., Ky, dated 1811,
signed by several noted Kentucky pioneers
including: Charles
HELM [1777-1821 or
1831 [?] - a merchant, politician,
soldier. He served for many years in the
state legislature and was said to be the
most popular man in Hardin County. During
the War of 1812, he was in Col. Aaron
Hart’s company, a mounted force, each man
furnishing his own horse, gun, ammunition,
& rations for himself & horse. BEN HELM
(1767-1858) moved to Kentucky from
Virginia in 1779. His father built one of
three forts that became Elizabethtown. He
purchased the farm owned by Christopher
Bush, father of Sarah, who became Abraham
Lincoln’s step-mother.
Robert
Bleakley, opened a store in Elizabethtown
with William Montgomery, another Irishman. Their establishment
is said to have been the first such operation in the pioneer
village that could ready be called a "store." Montgomery was an
Orangeman, who was engaged in the rebellion In Ireland in 1798.
He was arrested and confined in a prison from which men were
taken and executed daily He was released from prison through the
efforts of his aunt, who was married to the Lord Lieutenant of
Ireland on the condition that he would emigrate to America. Wm.
Montgomery and Bleakley opened adry goods store. In 1806 they
hired the father of Abraham Lincoln [Thomas] to take a flatboat
down the Mississippi river with their merchandise to be sold in
New Orleans. They paid Tom Lincoln 16 pounds gold and a credit
of 13 pounds in gold. Their store account books show Tom Lincoln
buying "two twists of tobacco & one pint of whisky." And
thebooks also show that in May 1806, Thomas went on a buying
spree, purchasing silk, linen, scarlet cloth, dozens of buttons,
etc. Earlier that year he had purchased an aristocratic beaver
hat & a pair of silk suspenders for $1.50. He was, at this
time, courting his future bride Nancy Hanks [Abe Lincoln's
mother]. After the wedding he made his home in a cabin close to
the courthouse in Elizabethtown. He then purchased at their
store, knives, forks, spoons, thread, needles, silk &
tobacco. Carl Sandburg wrote about Bleakley and Lincoln.
William P. DUVAL
(1784-1854) Interesting Kentucky pioneer who became Gov. of
Florida. Born in Virginia he was inclined to be somewhat wild in
his youth. While young he decided to go to Kentucky and
told his father, who remarked, “If I give you a Negro you will
sell him the first chance and spend the money you get for him;
if I give you a horse you will bet him off at the first horse
race you see, and if I give you a pocket full of money you will
bet it off or give it away. You love a gun and would not part
with that.” With a light heart he left home telling his family
he wouldn’t come back until he was a member of Congress÷. So he
walked to Kentucky. He arrived at Bardstown, Ky. and studied
law, fell in love and married the daughter of Col. Andrew Hynes.
Col. Hynes was the founder of Elizabethtown, which was named
after his wife. Having sown his wild oats he began to practice
law in Elizabethtown. As there were no lawyers there, he was
appointed County Attorney of Hardin County. In 1812 he ran for
congress and was so popular that no one opposed him. He served
in congress, 1813-14. On his first trip to Washington he visited
his relatives in Virginia for the first time since leaving, thus
verifying his promise not to return until he was a congressman.
In 1822 he was appointed Gov. of Florida by President Monroe,
and re-appointed by Presidents' Adams and Jackson.

395. [VERMONT] Benj.
Swan (1762-1839) an
interesting Vermont person. Known as Major
Ben Swan, was born in Worcester, Mass. At
Worcester and in Boston, Benjamin received
a most thorough mercantile education in
the house of Messrs. Samuel & Stephen
Salisbury, a firm whose standing and
credit for a series of years gave them the
highest reputation in the commercial
community, both in Europe and America. Mr.
Swan was for some time in a mercantile
house in Montreal, where he became quite
thoroughly versed in the French language,
then more generally spoken in Canada. In
1791 he began business in Woodstock,
Vermont, in connection with the Chandlers.
In the general theory and the various
details of the business of a merchant he
was probably the best-educated man in
Vermont. His unvarying rectitude in all
his affairs won for him the confidence of
every one, while his cheerful manners and
the good-humor with which he enlivened his
various business transactions made him a
favorite with all classes of the
community. After Mr. Swan retired from
mercantile pursuits, he sustained a
variety of offices and trusts. For many
years he was the principal officiating
magistrate in Woodstock, and in the
numerous trials of cases which came before
him the parties rarely, if ever, resorted
to a jury. He was the first postmaster in
this town [Woodstock]. In 1796, on the
resignation of General Morris of the
office of county clerk, Mr. Swan was
appointed to that place, and from that
time to his death, a period of forty-three
years, retained the position of clerk of
the Supreme and County Courts. In the year
1800 he was appointed by the legislature
treasurer of the State, and thenceforward,
for thirty-two years, the freemen of
Vermont honored themselves and reflected
honor upon him by electing him annually to
that office, and generally without
opposition. For a large portion of the
time during which he served as treasurer,
while banks were still scarce, and poor at
that, he acted as a kind of general
banker, to whom all classes of people
resorted who were wishing to borrow, for
an emergency, a moderate sum of money. The
following is an instance among many that
might be mentioned. When Zadock Thompson
was ready to have his first Gazetteer
printed, he needed money to run the paper.
This was to be made at Wells River. His
father said he would go to Benjamin Swan
and see if he could raise the money from
him. When he mentioned the matter to Major
Swan, and asked if he could do the favor,
the major answered, " Yes, yes, hum-m-m,"
and sat down and wrote to the paper-maker
thus: "Mr. Thompson wishes to buy
fifty dollars' worth of paper for his
Gazetteer, for which he shall be good.
"Benjamin Swan." Many of the loans,
however, which Mr. Swan made in his
function of general banker, proved
detrimental to bis pocket, if not to his
peace of mind. After his death there was
found on the upper shelf of the bookcase
in his office a long row of files of
notes, embracing many thousand dollars in
value, all outlawed, or otherwise wholly
worthless; notes taken for sums of money
lent to people in needy circumstances
living in the neighborhood, to young men
going West, and to various classes of
people who called on this patient and
forbearing man for help out of some
difficulty. From this fact it would appear
that the words of Scripture, "from him
that would borrow of thee, turn not thou
away," Mr. Swan regarded more in the light
of a rule to live by than as merely a
piece of fine sentiment. No man was ever
more highly esteemed by the people of this
State of Vermont than Major Benjamin Swan,
and no man was ever more deserving of such
esteem. Yet, notwithstanding the regard in
which he was held, and the universal
deference paid to him, in his deportment
and in his heart he was a man of great
modesty and humility. This was in keeping
with the kind and benevolent spirit he
exercised towards all classes of people
with whom he came in contact, whether in
business affairs or in the private walks
of life. Offered here is a State of

was an American soldier and politician, born at Pemaquid,

under Benedict Arnold in the unfortunate expedition to Canada
in that year. He was appointed in May 1777 as captain in Henry
Jackson's 16th Massachusetts Regiment, with which he
participated in the Battle of Monmouth. In 1779 he became
aide-de-camp to Baron Steuben, whom he greatly aided in
introducing his system of discipline in the Continental Army.
Later he accompanied Steuben to Virginia, and was present at
the surrender of Cornwallis. North was appointed as a

At the suggestion of fellow artist Stanhope Forbes, Birch adopted the soubriquet "Lamorna" to distinguish himself from Lionel Birch, an artist who was also working in the area at that time. Lamorna Birch was born in Egremont in Cheshire, England. He was self-taught as an artist, other than for a brief period of study at the Académie Colarossi in Paris during 1895. He is thought of as a painter of northern England, but his most important period was when he settled in Lamorna, Cornwall in 1902, and many of his most famous pictures date from this time and the beautiful Lamorna Cove is usually their subject matter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1892. He held his first one man exhibition at the Fine Art Society in 1906. He is said to have produced more than 20,000 pictures. The exhibition Shades of British Impressionism Lamorna Birch and his Circle was shown at Warrington Museum & Art Gallery in the Mezzanine in October 2004. This details his links with Henry Scott Tuke and Thomas Cooper Gotch and many others who settled in the artists' colony in the 1880s and 1890s. "These painters helped to change the face of British art. Their emphasis on colour and light, truth and social realism brought about a revolution in British art." says the catalogue for the show. 418. (ART) (JASPER JOHNS) original multiple. New York. Museum of Modern Art. Text by Riva Castleman Technics and Creativity Gemini GEL, 1971, 10.5 x 8.5 in. stiff wrappers in plastic clamshell box. 108 pp. 364 mostly thumbnail illustrations (20 full size in color), bibliography, index of artists. A Catalogue raisonne (to early 1971), published in a boxed edition of 22,500, with its problematic Jasper Johns "Target," an offset lithograph with applique paintbrush and three watercolor disks, in addition to the print , which is glued to the inside front cover of the box). Box also contains the catalog, a sheet of protective foam. The foam sheet is normally discolored and usually has three circular offprints from the watercolor disks. According to Richard S. Field ("Jasper Johns Prints 1970-1977"), the image was derived from a pencil drawing and collage of 1960 in the Sonnabend collection. A hand-pulled edition of 50 copies and six artists proofs was printed by Kenneth Tyler at Gemini in 1971. The offset edition was produced by Graphic Press, Los Angeles. Johns's participation in this enterprise was, at best, limited to the Gemini printing, which was hand-signed and numbered. The signature on the MoMA target was mechanically reproduced [the one offered here]. If it appears to have been signed in ink or pencil, forgery is indicated. The white clamshell box is spotted but intact. The other main factor involving this multiple is the condition of the offset target lithograph. As is often the case a former owner has wetted the watercolor blocks and started to paint the target but has only painted a small part in yellow. The brush is often missing as is missing here.
