69. [ART] Leonard Volk (1828-1895) American sculptor. Most famous for
making a life mask of American President Abraham Lincoln. In the
early part of spring in 1860, during Abraham Lincoln's visit to
Chicago, Volk asked him to sit for a bust. When Lincoln agreed,
the artist decided to start by doing a life mask. Lincoln found
the process of letting wet plaster dry on his face, followed by
a skin-stretching removal process, "anything but agreeable." But
he endured it with good humor, and when he saw the final bust,
he was quite pleased, declaring it "the animal himself." Volk
later used the life mask and bust of 1860 as the basis for other
editions, including a full-length statue of Lincoln. In 1848 he
opened a studio at St Louis, Missouri, and in 1855 was sent by
his wife's cousin, politician Stephen A. Douglas, to Rome to
study. Returning to America in 1857, he settled in Chicago,
where he helped to establish an Academy of Design and was for
eight years its head. Among his principal works: the Douglas
monument at Chicago, Illinois; AND statues of Abraham Lincoln
and Stephen A. Douglas in the Illinois State Capitol at
Springfield, Illinois. Offered

[ART] Scott Leighton
(1849-1898) Although American artist Nicholas Winfield
Scott Leighton is best known for his paintings of horses, horse
racing and barnyard scenes, Scott Leighton was also an
accomplished landscape artist. At the age of 17, Scott
Leighton moved to Portland, Maine, and received his early
artistic training under Harrison Bird Brown (1831-1915).
In 1880, Leighton moved to Boston to set up a studio of his
own. He continued to be involved with horses and their
trainers and produced many lithographs for Currier and
Ives. Some of his paintings that were reproduced in prints
included: On the Road, In the Stable, Three Veterans, and The
Fearnaught Stallions. The artist exhibited his work at the
Boston Art Club, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the
National Academy of Design. Leighton’s talent and skill as
an artist was so great, he was often complimented as the
“Landseer of the United States.” This was a direct
reference to British artist Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, RA
(1802-1873), an acclaimed nineteenth-century artist who
specialized in animal paintings. Unfortunately, Leighton
met with a sad and tragic end. According to a New York Times
article published on January 4, 1898:“Scott Leighton, the
well-known artist, was committed to the McLean Insane Asylum
to-day…Mr. Leighton’s condition was certified to by Dr. George
F. Jelly, the expert on mental diseases.” The article
continues to relate the event by stating: “Mr. Leighton’s
delusion is that he is possessed of millions, and wants to build
a great theatre. He also planned a big banquet for Sunday
night, at which all his friends were to be present…As the time
for dinner approached…Mr. Leighton put on his dress suit and
paraded up and down the corridor of the Revere House awaiting
the arrival of his guests. Then he fell to singing negro
songs. The hotel rang with the notes of his powerful
voice, which years ago was trained for choir singing. To
Dr. Jelly, who examined him, [Leighton] said: “If I go to the
McLean Asylum for treatment, Doctor, will it hurt my business or
reputation when I leave it?” “Not in the least,” replied Dr.
Jelly. “All right, I’ll go”’ the artist answered at once.”
Scott Leighton passed away on the morning of January 18, 1898
from complications of pneumonia. CLIP SIGNATURE, approx.

playwright born in French Saint-Gobain ( Picardie ),
France. Luce Lancival was a brilliant student at
Louis-le-Grand College and was appointed professor of
rhetoric at the college of Navarre at age 22 ( 1786 ).
The following year he left teaching and took

In the French Revolution, he broke his vows and turned
to theater. To 1797 , he was in charge of the
French literature during Prytanée former Collège
Louis-le-Grand . He remained a professor of rhetoric at
the imperial school at the time of reorganization of the
University. He was then called to the chair of Latin
poetry at the Sorbonne . In 1805 , he wrote his
poem in six cantos Achilles in Skyros,
his best known work. In the theater, Luce Lancival
won his greatest success shortly before his death, with
his tragedy 'of Hector , shown in 1809 at the
Comédie-French . On a subject taken from the Iliad , the
piece caused a sensation by nature judged by the very
contemporary faithful to the spirit of ancient Greece.
Napoleon rewarded the author assigning him a pension of
6,000 French francs. His love of life, pushed to
debauchery, was famous in his time. He must have lost a
leg, probably because of diabetes, and carry a wooden
leg. Despite this disability and poor health, he gave
himself with great dedication to the teaching of
literature and was an outstanding teacher. Rare

[AMERICANA] Dr. Henry
Wise Farley (1795-1839) Few
people today would recognize his name, but during the
1830s and long after his death in 1839, he was without
doubt the most learned man ever to call Liberty,
Texas home. The 1837 public notice regarding the
sale of town lots in Liberty suggests he may
have actually been the first mayor of Liberty.
Research done by Joyce Calhoon showed he had served as
our first county judge during the 1835-1836 period of
the Texas Revolution. The facts of his life are
interesting enough. He was born on December 5, 1795 in
Ipswich, Massachusetts. His middle name is an old and
distinguished one in Essex County, dating back to a
prominent clergyman named the Rev. John Wise. His
father, Jabez, was distinguished in the American
Revolution. One of his kinsmen, General Michael
Farley, was a major figure in the histories of the
American Revolution in New England. When he was
in his late teens, Henry, went off to the Harvard
Medical College. The late Camilla Davis Trammell wrote
of him: "When Henry Wise Farley finished at Harvard
Medical College in 1814, he practiced in his home town
of Ipswich, Massachusetts. Then came 'the year without
sun' followed by two crop failures, and Henry decided
to leave that land of hunger. Farley's two brothers
had previously gone to the West Indies, but they both
lost their lives there. He decided to go to New
Orleans instead. However, behind New Orleans' outward
glitter and joie de vivre, he discovered shocking
slavery and sanitation problems. As one observer
wrote, 'New Orleans is a dreadful place in the eyes of
the New England man. They keep Sunday as we in Boston
keep the Fourth of July.' Yellow fever was often
followed by cholera. Debauchery and bribery were as
rampant as he had heard they were in the West
Indies. "Dr. Farley decided to move westward. He
found employment on the Berwick plantation, where he
treated slaves and owners alike. There were also
French refugees in the area from the destruction of
Champ d'Asile, across the Sabine River in Texas, and
he treated them. They spoke highly of that land to the
west in Texas. In 1824, the gentle young doctor
courted and married Catherine, the eldest daughter of
Ann [Berwick] and Christopher O'Brien, Jr." A
few years later, with their two young sons, the
Farleys moved to the village called Atascosito, the
forerunner to the Town of Liberty. Dr. Farley became
active in the Revolution, serving with the Texan Army
in the capacity of a surgeon. Soon thereafter, he
appears in 1837 records as both the mayor of the Town
of Liberty and as Justice of the Peace for the same
area. In late 1839, as he juggled numerous
business responsibilities, Dr. Farley was compelled by
necessity to travel back to New Orleans to purchase
medical instruments and supplies. He postponed his
visit as long as possible, trying to wait out a yellow
fever raging through the Crescent City, but finally
booked passage on the schooner Columbia at Liberty and
headed that way. We will turn again to Mrs. Trammell's
well-chosen words: "The day he arrived, as he walked
through the German section of New Orleans, some
ruffians beset him and stole his purse [what we might
call a wallet]. Bruised and disheveled, he was still
able to buy most of his supplies on credit, and he
returned to the dock. A captain told him that his
schooner, the Alexander of Macedon, wa about to sail,
and he booked passage." While waiting a couple of days
for the schooner to depart, Dr. Farley wrote his wife
Catherine on November 19, 1839: "I am tired, dirty,
ragged, lonely and low-spirited but not sick. Kiss our
sweet treasures a thousand times each for me. You will
see me shortly after you receive this." He never
made it home again. Dr. Farley fell ill with the
yellow fever the second day out of New Orleans. He
died on the schooner named for Alexander of Macedon.
The crew quickly buried him in the Gulf waters. So
ends the story of Dr. Henry Wise Farley. No marker
here bears his name. Once an indispensable and
brilliant man in life, he is sadly forgotten 177 years
later. But you and I now know his story. Offerd
here is a folded stampless letter, Dutch Settlement,
La., 1834, one+ pages, to his brother Capt.
Thomas Farley, who is at New Orleans. Mentions
that his wife is still in very bad health; he
and the children are well; mentions New Orleans
several times. Excellent

106. [ART] Karl Kasten (1916-2010) American artist who studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, and who is perhaps considered the most important art teacher of the 20th century in America. Kasten was a painter-printmaker-educator from the San Francisco Bay Area. Kasten was also an editorial cartoonist and Arts Editor for The Daily Californian newspaper. His cartoons regularly featured reflections on the New Deal and the conflicts in Europe. By coincidence the success of Berkeley's Golden Bears also marked an interesting chapter in Kasten's artistic adventure. As part of the Rally Committee, Kasten designed and directed the card stunts for the 1938 Rose Bowl against Alabama's Crimson Tide. The card sequence depicted Berkeley's Campanile covered over by a surging red tide. As the tide receded, a bear appeared in a rowboat and rowed across the tide. Cal won, 13-0. Kasten describes the stunts as, "The greatest work of art I ever did." He went on to complete his B.A and M.A at UC Berkeley. Following his graduation he taught briefly at the California School of Fine Arts but the attack on Pearl Harbor led him to wartime service. On D-Day he was promoted to Captain and put in charge of the Intelligence unit of the Battalion. Kastens' memories of the war are dark and he recalls bluntly, "My job was to kill people," and "I was pretty miserable inside." In the early '50s Kasten experimented with Cubism and non-objective painting but after studying at the Hans Hofmann School in Provincetown, Mass in '51 he turned to Abstract Expressionism. Hoffman's modern art philosophy stressed "pictorial structure, spatial illusion, and color relationships." In her biography of the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism Susan Landauer noted Kasten as the artist who came closest to these tenets. Of that period Kasten said, "It was a great period to work in. Just letting things flow and seeing what happens... I think I got more color into painting during that time than most guys." n addition to his wide record of painting exhibitions, Karl Kasten is known worldwide as a master printer. In 1950, he established the Printmaking program and a course in Materials and Techniques at UC Berkeley. Kasten exhibited in the São Paulo Bicentennial and World Print III Traveling Show, as well as the M. H. de Young Museum and California Palace of the Legion of Honor, the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. His works are in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Oakland Art Museum; San Jose Museum of Art; New York Public Library; Museum of Modern Art, New York City; M. H. de Young Memorial Museum; Achenback Collection; Musee des Beaux Arts, Rennes; Auckland City Museum, New Zealand; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. 108. Richard
Taylor (1744-1829) was an officer in
the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. He
was the father of Zachary Taylor, the 12th President of the
United States. Born in Orange County, Virginia, in 1769 he
explored the Ohio River and Mississippi River with his older
brother, Hancock Taylor, travelling from Pittsburgh to New
Orleans. When the American Revolution began, Taylor became a
2nd lieutenant in the Virginia Continental forces on
February 12, 1775, and fought in the battles of White
Plains, Trenton, Brandywine, and Monmouth. He was discharged
as a lieutenant colonel on September 12, 1781. After
the war, Taylor became an Original Member of the Virginia
Society of the Cincinnati. Taylor married Sarah Dabney
Strother in 1779. They lived first at his plantation, "Hare
Forest". However, he had acquired 8,000 acres
throughout Kentucky, and with the return of peace in 1783,
he started clearing the land to move his family there. They
did so in 1785, and by 1790 he had built his home
"Springfield", known today as the Zachary Taylor
House. Taylor was also involved with the Valley Forge
Campaign. In the Fall of 1777 Thomas Shoemaker's Gwynedd
township house was first plundered by Washington's army,
then occupied by Taylor and other officers who kept the
foragers away. The troops commandeered livestock and hay for
the army. The troops did not even leave a milk cow for the
family with small children and when they bought a new one it
was taken too. However, this was stopped by Capt.Richard
Taylor, Capt. William Cunningham and Capt. Francis Taylor
(all from Virginia and part of Greene's Corp). They had the
prime offender arrested on 24 October 1777, and made him run
the gauntlet after which the families in the neighborhood
were no longer bothered. Richard Taylor told Thomas
Shoemaker, he had "been in nine battles and would be in
ninety-nine more before the British gained the day."
During the Northwest Indian War, Taylor served as a
volunteer in the Kentucky militia under Major John Adair. He
was injured in a disastrous 1792 battle with Indians under
Little Turtle near Fort St. Clair, site of the present
Eaton, Ohio. By 1800, Taylor had enlarged "Springfield" to
700 acres by 1800. He remained active for the
remainder of his life in Kentucky politics. He donated
60 acres for the creation of Taylorsville, Kentucky, which
was named in his honor. Offered here is a 1819
document in which Richard Taylor sells property at
Frankfort, Ky. to Robert Brenham for $3100. This
document is signed by Richard Taylor & we believe
Margaret M. Taylor [not Mary Ann Taylor, which the clerk
writes below]. The basic document is written on both sides
of a 7-3/4 x 9-3/4 in. sheet, with a second sheet containing
6 lines in the clerk's hand. Look like Richard Taylor has
also signed for Margaret M. Taylor. Some separation at
fold lines. Extremely Rare!!!!!......................500-800

109. Roger
C. Sullivan (1861-1920), was a member of the
Cook County Democratic Organization during the early
twentieth century. Sullivan dominated the Illinois
Democratic Party for two decades and was a national figure
during the age when urban Democratic organizations reached
the height of their power and prestige. Sullivan became
controversial when he became effectively the chief operating
officer of the Ogden Gas Company and the Cosmopolitan
Electric Company, about a year after the franchises of which
were approved by the city council on 25 February 1895. There
is no evidence that Sullivan in any way originated the idea
for two companies, and he probably became first involved by
convincing his political partner, Mayor John P. Hopkins not
to veto the ordinances. The amount he made was reported by
the New York Times to be $8,000,000, but the exact amount
has been the subject of much speculation. However, by
the standards of the time, there was nothing illegal about
the franchise. Indeed, it involved many of the city's
leading men, including the brother-in-law of Governor John
P. Altgeld, who became a shareholder. Sullivan wealth was
also derived from a number of independent business
investments. The most notable of these was the Sawyer
Biscuit Company, a corporation he organized with his
brothers and others about 1900. This became one of the
nation's leading manufacturers of cookies, crackers, and
pastries. It eventually became part of Keebler. Roger C.
Sullivan was never indicted for anything, nor even accused
of any criminal activity even by his most vehement
opponents. The historian Forrest McDonald in his work on
Samuel Insull has conceded that Sullivan introduced a new
approach to municipal politics by forgoing raids on the
public till, and confining himself and his associates
profits from city contracts and jobs, all within the
boundaries of the law. TLS, 1914, laid to album

20th-century ballerina and the founder of the Suzanne
Farrell Ballet at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Signed,
inscribed 10x8 in. photo. Photographer is Steven
Carras, a noted ballet photographer who danced for 14 years
with the New York City Ballet, the company's co-founders
George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein took early serious
note of Caras' natural talent in photography. Quick to
recognize his affinity with the camera, New York City Ballet
granted him privileged access to photograph all aspects of
their activities, readily making use of the vibrant
photographs he immediately began to produce. Forced to
choose between the two, he would dance his last performance
with the New York City Ballet in 1983, devoting his time
thereafter exclusively to photography.
Clearly his decision has paid off. Today Steven Caras is an
internationally acclaimed photographer and published author
who has amassed a thirty-five year body of work considered
to be one of the most valuable photographic archives in the
history of dance. Fine..................75-100

156. [INVENTOR] The Reverend Robert Willis (1800-1875) English academic. He was the first Cambridge professor to win widespread recognition as a mechanical engineer, and first set the scientific study of vowels on a respectable foundation, but now best remembered for his extensive architectural writings, including a 4-volume treatise on the architecture of the University of Cambridge. Willis's theory of vowel production assumed a close correspondence between vowel production and the production of musical notes using an organ: the lung acted as a bellows, the vocal folds acted as the reed, and the mouth cavity acted as the organ pipe. Different vowels corresponded to mouth cavities(/organ pipes) of different lengths, which were independent of the properties or vibrations of the vocal folds(/reed). Willis's 1830 paper On vowel sounds, and on reed-organ pipes is usually given as the reference for this theory, and is often contrasted with Wheatstone's "harmonic" theory of vowel production.Russell devotes two chapters to the discussion of these two theories in his 1928 book on The Vowel , and Willis and Wheatstone figure prominently in the discussion of vowel theories given by Chiba and Kajiyama in their 1941 book of the same name. In 1856 Trench became Dean of Westminster Abbey, a

Archbishop of Dublin. Arthur Penrhyn Stanley had been
first choice, but was rejected by the Irish Church , and,
according to Bishop Wilberforce's correspondence, Trench's
appointment was favoured neither by the prime minister nor
the lord-lieutenant. It was, moreover, unpopular in
Ireland, and a blow to English literature; yet it turned
out to be fortunate. Trench could not prevent the
disestablishment of the Irish Church, though he resisted
with dignity. But, when the disestablished communion had
to be reconstituted under the greatest difficulties, it
was important that the occupant of his position should be

175. [LINCOLN]
LEONARD W. VOLK (1828-1895)
American sculptor. Most famous for making a life mask of
American President Abraham Lincoln. In 1857, he settled in
Chicago, where he helped to establish the Academy of Design and
was for eight years its head. In 1860 he made a life mask of
Lincoln, of whom only one other was ever made (by Clark Mills in
1865). In the early part of spring in 1860, during Abraham
Lincoln\'s visit to Chicago, Volk asked him to sit for a bust.
When Lincoln agreed, the artist decided to start by doing a life
mask. Lincoln found the process of letting wet plaster dry on
his face, followed by a skin-stretching removal process,
\"anything but agreeable.\" But he endured it with good humor,
and when he saw the final bust, he was quite pleased, declaring
it \"the animal himself.\" Volk later used the life mask and
bust of 1860 as the basis for other editions, including a
full-length statue of Lincoln.OFFERED HERE: Signed 1893 National

223. [MAINE] William
Allen Hayes (1783-1851) Noted Maine judge
and lawyer, born in North Yarmouth, Hayes had attended
Dartmouth, where he was said to have ridden on horseback from
Maine with all his possessions in his saddlebags. He graduated
with honors in 1805. He then studied with Dudley Hubbard as well
as with lawyers Ezekiel Whitman and Artemas Ward of Charlestown,
Massachusetts, and was admitted to the Middlesex, Massachusetts,
Bar in 1809. Hayes opened an office in South Berwick village
above the Parks Store with local attorney Charles Northend
Cogswell. At the time, the center of South Berwick was in
transition, shifting in location from near the Salmon Falls
River to its present site along Main and Portland Streets, the
route that was part of a developing stagecoach turnpike between
Boston and Portland. Of the Hayes and Cogswell law firm, the
History of York County said, “It proved a most successful
partnership, both being of high intellectual endowments and
large business capacity. It is said that for many years more
business was done in their office than in any other in the
county.” Cogswell died in 1846. Hayes was judge of probate
from 1828 to 1847, and served as president of the South Berwick
Bank and of the York County Bar for more than 25 years. In 1841
he became an investor in South Berwick's first railroad line,
the Great Falls and South Berwick Branch Railroad Company, and
he owned shares in the woolen mill at Great Works. He was also a
leader of the First Parish Church. Judge Hayes is believed
to have acquired considerable property in the interior of the
town. He “had the instincts of an English country squire,” later
wrote Sarah Orne Jewett, “and lived like one on his great
estate, bringing up his handsome sons and daughters to be ladies
and gentlemen, to walk and to speak as ladies and gentlemen
should, and to be self-respecting and respectful of others.” In
the 20th century, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts acquired
mahogany chairs from Hayes House that were perhaps made by
Langley Boardman of Portsmouth or by a South Berwick craftsman.
The museum's research found the Hayes family furnished their
south sitting room with “a Franklin stove, a piano, two card
tables, a variety of seating furniture, plants, and portraits of
Mrs. Hayes and the Judge.” Portraits of Judge Hayes and his wife
are thought perhaps to have been painted by the New England
artist Joseph Greenleaf Cole (1806 - 1858). In 1811 Hayes
married Susan Lord (c. 1790-1870), the only daughter of merchant
and ship-owner Gen. John Lord. The couple and their children
were among those greeting General Lafayette on his 1825 visit to
the Frost Tavern on Main Street. “The citizens were introduced
to the General in the parlor of the Hotel,” recalled Sophia
Hayes Goodwin years later. “My father acted as master of
ceremonies and I remember my pride in his easy address. I
remember my father wore a claret colored frock coat – which
displayed his remarkably handsome person to great advantage. But
I was half ashamed when he brought up my sister Hetta and myself
and introduced us as his children, though I was partially
assured when the General complimented him upon having so
interesting a family.” In 1960 Berwick Academy became a
private boarding school, and in 1966 it bought the Hayes House.
The Judson Dunaway Foundation provided a $50,000 grant to
convert it to a dormitory known as Dunaway. In 1974 the academy
became a country day school and the house a headmaster's
residence. Today the Hayes House is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. Offered here is a

226. [WALLY
WALLGREN] Abian A. Wallgren [1891-1948] better
known as "Wally" Wallgren, worked as a cartoonist for the
Philadelphia Public Ledger and Washington Post before World War
I, creating strips like 'Inbad the Sailor' and 'Tired Timothy'.
So who was he? A Marine, for starters. An American soldier in
the AEF during WW1, Abian "Wally" Wallgren drew comics for
"Stars and Stripes." The Stars and Stripes, published
exclusively in France during its seventeen-month run, used a
layout typical of American newspapers of the day, with wide
columns, "all-cap" headlines, and lots of illustrations. The
editorial staff assigned to the newspaper was composed mostly of
enlisted men, including several career journalists. Second
Lieutenant Guy T. Viskniskki from the Wheeler Newspaper
Syndicate, New York Times drama critic Alexander Woollcott,
bibliophile John Winterich, and cartoonist Abian "Wally"
Wallgren of the Washington Post were among those who contributed
their experience and skill. Besides expressing editorial
opinion, cartoons entertained the troops, offering them humorous
stories and images that satirized everyday life in the military.
Many of these spoofs, written in 1918 and 1919, remain relevant
today. The most popular among the soldiers were Private Abian
A."Wally" Wallgren's cartoons and irreverent "Helpful Hints,"
which poked fun at army conventions from food to uniforms to
rank. When a new issue of The Stars and Stripes arrived, the
soldiers scanned it first for the cartoons by "Wally" Wallgren.
OFFERED HERE are 57 letters (1943-47) from Harold E. Homrig to
Wally Wallgren, plus one bank check signed by Wallgren. Most of
the letters are from 1946 and all are about Homrig working on a
project concerning the exhibition of Wally's cartoons at
military sites. Many of the letters have brief handwriting by

He is probably best known for being one of the most corrupt Governors of that State. As governor, Hoffman secretly visited convicted Lindbergh kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann in his death row cell on the evening of October 16, 1935 with Anna Bading, a stenographer and fluent speaker of German. Hoffman urged the other members of the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals , then the state's highest court, to visit Hauptmann. Despite Governor Hoffman's doubt regarding Hauptmann's guilt, Hoffman was unable to convince the other members of the Court to re-examine the case, and Hauptmann was executed on April 3, 1936. On March 18, 1954, Governor Robert B. Meyner uncovered a significant embezzlement scheme perpetrated by Hoffman, and suspended him from his position of Employment Security Division Director. Three months later, in June 1954, Hoffman died in a New York City hotel room of a heart attack. At the suggestion of fellow artist Stanhope Forbes, Birch adopted the soubriquet "Lamorna" to distinguish himself from Lionel Birch, an artist who was also working in the area at that time. Lamorna Birch was born in Egremont in Cheshire, England. He was self-taught as an artist, other than for a brief period of study at the Académie Colarossi in Paris during 1895. He is thought of as a painter of northern England, but his most important period was when he settled in Lamorna, Cornwall in 1902, and many of his most famous pictures date from this time and the beautiful Lamorna Cove is usually their subject matter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1892. He held his first one man exhibition at the Fine Art Society in 1906. He is said to have produced more than 20,000 pictures. The exhibition Shades of British Impressionism Lamorna Birch and his Circle was shown at Warrington Museum & Art Gallery in the Mezzanine in October 2004. This details his links with Henry Scott Tuke and Thomas Cooper Gotch and many others who settled in the artists' colony in the 1880s and 1890s. "These painters helped to change the face of British art. Their emphasis on colour and light, truth and social realism brought about a revolution in British art." says the catalogue for the show. 418. (ART) (JASPER JOHNS) original multiple. New York. Museum of Modern Art. Text by Riva Castleman Technics and Creativity Gemini GEL, 1971, 10.5 x 8.5 in. stiff wrappers in plastic clamshell box. 108 pp. 364 mostly thumbnail illustrations (20 full size in color), bibliography, index of artists. A Catalogue raisonne (to early 1971), published in a boxed edition of 22,500, with its problematic Jasper Johns "Target," an offset lithograph with applique paintbrush and three watercolor disks, in addition to the print , which is glued to the inside front cover of the box). Box also contains the catalog, a sheet of protective foam. The foam sheet is normally discolored and usually has three circular offprints from the watercolor disks. According to Richard S. Field ("Jasper Johns Prints 1970-1977"), the image was derived from a pencil drawing and collage of 1960 in the Sonnabend collection. A hand-pulled edition of 50 copies and six artists proofs was printed by Kenneth Tyler at Gemini in 1971. The offset edition was produced by Graphic Press, Los Angeles. Johns's participation in this enterprise was, at best, limited to the Gemini printing, which was hand-signed and numbered. The signature on the MoMA target was mechanically reproduced [the one offered here]. If it appears to have been signed in ink or pencil, forgery is indicated. The white clamshell box is spotted but intact. The other main factor involving this multiple is the condition of the offset target lithograph. As is often the case a former owner has wetted the watercolor blocks and started to paint the target but has only painted a small part in yellow. The brush is often missing as is missing here. VG condition.............300-400

590. [MAINE] Ralph Owen Brewster (1888 - 1961) was an American politician from Maine. Brewster, a Republican, was solidly conservative, a close confidant of Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin and antagonist of Howard Hughes. Brewster came to national attention due to his opposition to the commercial interests of Howard Hughes , America's wealthiest man at the time. Brewster was chairman of a special Senate committee investigating defense procurement during World War II. He claimed concern that Hughes had received $40 million from the Defense Department without actually delivering the aircraft he had contracted to provide, but Brewster may have had an ulterior motive. Incidentally, Hughes stated that the H-4 Hercules cost far more, with the balance coming from his own funds. Hughes aggressively combated the inquirer, alleging corruption. Memoirs by Hughes right-hand man Noah Dietrich and syndicated newspaper columnist Jack Anderson each sketched Brewster as, in Dietrich's words, "an errand boy for Juan Trippe and Pan American World Airways," who pushed for legislation that would give Pan Am the single-carrier international air monopoly for the U.S. The Martin Scorsese movie The Aviator portrays Brewster (played by Alan Alda) similarly, as corrupt and in the pocket of Pan Am, the rival of Hughes' TWA . Hughes spread rumors about Brewster's close association with Pan Am, alleging that he received free flights and hospitality in return for legislation such as his bill to withdraw government approval for TWA flights across the Atlantic. 600. Colonel John Purviance [1743-1823] At the commencement of the
Revolutionary war, he volunteered and was appointed Lieutenant
in the army. He behaved himself valiantly during the war, and
was gradually promoted to the office of Colonel. He fought
bravely for the liberty of his country, and rejoiced to see the
Colony free. He returned a thankful heart to the bosom of his
family, and lived happily there until the fall of 1791. He moved
with his family to Sumner County, Tennessee. The country there
was almost a wilderness. In the spring of 1792, his second son,
John Purviance, while in the field at work, was shot, scalped,
he was so near the house, that his wife could hear the Indian
yells, and she would have run to her husband in the midst of
them, had she not have been prevented by the interposition of
her friends. They had been married but a few months. Col. John
Purviance being alarmed at these savage cruelties, left the
place and moved to Caneridge, Bourbon County, Kentucky, where
the inhabitants were less exposed to Indian attacks. Clip signature dated 1781.........50-75

[ART] Sir Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914)
British painter of German descent, and also a pioneering
film-director and composer. Though a very successful
portraitist, especially of men, he is mainly remembered for his
earlier works that took a realistic approach to the conditions
of life of the poor. Hard Times, showing the family of a
travelling day-labourer at the side of a road, is probably his
best known work. He exhibited a
very large number of memorable portraits, figure subjects and
landscapes, in oil and watercolour; he achieved marked success
as a worker in enamel, as an etcher, mezzotint engraver and
illustrative draughtsman; and he exercised wide influence upon
art education by means of the Herkomer School (Incorporated), at
Bushey, which he founded in 1883 and directed without payment
until 1904, when he retired. Despite being a prominent
member of Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Watercolour Society and
the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, as well as being on
familiar terms with the royal family, Herkomer was never totally
accepted by the British establishment: He was ultimately a
victim of the deteriorating relationship between Great Britain
and Germany, where he shuttled in between, spending most of his
summers in Bavaria. Herkomer was also a pioneering
filmmaker. He established a studio in Lululaund and directed
some seven historical costume dramas, designed to be shown
accompanied by his own music. None of them seem to have
survived. ORIGINAL ETCHING, titled: "WORDS OF COMFORT",
approx. 10 x 7 plus margins. A few stains in the margins
but very good in image and close areas........100-150
811. [ART] Edmund H. Garrett (1853-11929) A well known nineteenth century American painter, etcher and illustrator, studied art at the Academie Julien in Paris under Jean Paul Laurens, Boulanger and Lefebvre. After residing in France for a period of about five years he returned to America and established a successful studio in Boston. During the last two decades of the nineteenth century, Edmund Garrett's paintings and etchings were widely exhibited throughout the United States and in France at the Paris Salon. Garrett's first original prints were in the medium of wood engraving. Under the advice of Robert Swain Gifford (1840-1905), he created his first etching in 1879. Specializing in both architectural views and landscapes, Edmund Henry Garrett's ensuing etchings dealt mainly with areas around Boston. Near Mattakeesett is typical of his fine handling of perspective, light and shade and other pictorial qualities. Original etching, unsigned, "Near Mattakeesett", image approx. 4-7/8 x 8-3/4 plus margins. One light foxing spot well away from image. Appears to have been suntoned [evenly] at some time because the image and margin area well outside of plate mark is a little darker. Perhaps this was matted at some time.............100-150

twenty six years as the Instructor of Art at the Philadelphia
School of Design for Women. Offered here is an original

827. [ART] Sir
HUBERT von HERKOMER, (1849-1914,
painter, R.A., R.W.S.) SELF-PORTRAIT, original etching, head and
shoulders, with his children Siegfried and Elsa below
half-length as a vignette, signed ('HH') and dated '79 on the
plate, titled 'Published London April 1st 1880 by The British
and Foreign Artists Association', 'Entered according to act of
Congress in the year 1880 by Knoedler & Co in the office of
the Librarian of Congress at Washington', extremely fine
impression, 13-1/2 x 8 in. Herkomer regarded this as his
best etching. He described the circumstances of the production
of it when on a camping trip to Wales in 1879. 'As I knew the
painting of one landscape would not give me sufficient
occupation for so many weeks, I took with me all the
paraphernalia of the etcher - plates, grounds, dishes, acids,
and a small printing press (an invention of Mr Hamerton's). This
wretched little contrivance proved utterly inadequate for my
work. In order to get a decent impression we tightened the
rollers to their last gasp, and then we dragged the whole
machine around the tent in the vain attempt to turn the toy
handles. Still, it was under these circumstances that I did -
what I consider my best etching - a portrait of (the handy
model) myself, with my two children in the lower corner of the
plate.' Very good condition. In an auction at
Bonhams [London] [2005] another example of this etching
was estimated at £500 - 600 US$ 840 - 1,000. It
realized $730.........700-900

829. [ART] A major drawing by Albert Sterner. A large study done for his lithograph called Wilderness, done in 1923. ALBERT STERNER (1863-1946) American artist. STERNER'S influence is seen in the works of both Rockwell Kent and George Bellows; he introduced each of them to the technique of lithography and put them in touch with the master printer/artist Bolton Brown. In 1915, Sterner rallied a group of printmakers together to raise the general quality of American prints. The founders of the Painter-Gravers of America included, along with Sterner, Childe Hassam, Bellows, & George Elmer Brown. He became a member of the National Academy, won a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition of 1900; gold medal at Munich in 1905, a bronze at Buffalo Exposition in 1901, and Carnegie Prize in 1941. He was President of Soc. of Illustrators, 1907-09. This was one of Sterner's larger works, also seems imbued with symbolism. It would be fair to intyerpret it as an experiment, using the theme Adam and Eve. The scene is literally that of "The Fall," as suggested by the abyss between the towering cliffs. Though Eve (?) is looking skyward, she is not, apparently, seeking help from the Lord; her gaze is directed toward the upper right to the Garden of Eden (?) from which she and Adam have been expelled. As Sterner said, he was fond of "symbolic goings-on." Here, vigorous crayon strokes and the radiant light on the female's body combine to produce a work of great strength. This is how Harry A. Broadd described Sterner's lithograh in his article ALBERT STERNER: Printmaker with Ideas, which appeared in Print Review 14, Pratt Graphic Center 1982. The drawing offered here, a working study for his lithograph, is not signed, and approx. 18 x 13 in. plus margins. Provenance: the Albert Sterner Estate. VG...............1200-1800

See above831. [ART] Original etching by Gaston-Louis Rodriguez, after a painting by Publio De Tommasi, titled GOLDEN DREAMS. The following is printed on the tissue guard: "This is a painter's picture, to which any one of a half dozen titles might be tacked, from the somewhat worn "Dolce far Niente" upwards. The artist has simply posed his model, this dark-haired, smiling Italian beauty, in a convenient dishabille, in a picturesque attitude, with an appropriate arrangement of flowers, draperies, etc., and painted her as a very superior article of studio bric-a-brac. The title of this no-subject comes afterwards, and can be most anything you please. The justification of the work lies, of course, in the artistic rendering of an excellent bit of color and texture, and the etcher gives us his word, in this very good translation, that the painter has done justice to his theme." The image is approx. 7-3/4 x 11-3/4" plus margins. Only faults at outer edges, well away from image area.............100-150

[ART] Clinton King
(1901-1979) American artist, born in Fort Worth, Texas and
received his formal education at the University of Texas and
Princeton. He studied painting from Randall Davey and Robert
Reid and gained early recognition in Texas at the Annual Texas
Artists Exhibitions. He is generally associated with the
regional art of Texas and the Santa Fe Art Colony of New Mexico
until 1940. After 1940 and in to the 1960s, he exhibited often
in Chicago, New York and Paris. King painted genre scenes,
landscapes, portraits and still life. His early modernist
portraits and genre were often compared to Diego Rivera. King
was a modernist, and a Renaissance man of the art world, whose
styles included Realism, Impressionism, and Abstract
Expressionism at various periods in his 40 years of artistic
activity. During his lifetime, King's paintings won many prizes
and are held in many public collections, including: the Library
of Congress; National Collection of Fine Art; New York Public
Library; Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe; Philadelphia Museum of
Fine Art; and the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris. Offered
